دعا کلمه‌ای عربی به معنای مایل ساختن چیزی به سوی خود با صدا و کلام است و جمع آن ادعیه است.

دعا در قرآن و روایات به عنوان یکی از راه‌های ارتباط با خدا مورد تاکید قرار گرفته و برترین عبادت‌ها شمرده شده است. در آیه ۶۰ سوره غافر خداوند مردم را به دعا کردن امر می‌کند و نوید اجابت می‌دهد. در این آیه دعا نوعی عبادت محسوب شده و ترک ‌کننده آن را از سر بزرگی‌ طلبی بیم دوزخ و عذابی خوارکننده داده است. 

نیایش یا دعا شکلی از رفتار دینی است که هدف از آن ، جستن ارتباط با موجودیتی است که فردِ نیایشگر او را به‌عنوان آفریدگار خود یا موجودی روحانی در نظر می‌گیرد. فرد نیایشگر در دعاهای خود معمولاً خواسته‌ای را از مخاطبِ نیایش خود طلب می‌کند یا از مخاطبِ دعا سپاسگزاری می‌کند. دعاها معمولاً با بیان کردن واژه‌هایی به‌صورت شفاهی یا تداعی آن واژه‌ها در ذهن انجام می‌گیرد و در برخی ادیان شکل رایج‌تر آن به‌صورت نیایش‌ سرایی است. 

برای دعا آداب و شرایطی از جمله خواندن خدا با اسماء الحسنی ، طلب از پروردگار از سر بیم و امید و از روی تضرع و خشوع ، شروع دعا با بسمله و حمد و صلوات ، ذکر شده است. دعا به زمان و مکان خاصی محدود نشده ولی بعضی از زمان‌ها و برخی از مکان‌ها برای دعا کردن مناسب‌تر معرفی شده است.

دعای سمات

دعای سمات معروف به دعاى شبوّر [دعاى عطا و بخشش ] است، كه خواندن آن در ساعت آخر روز جمعه مستحب است و پوشيده نماند كه دعای سمات از دعاهاى مشهور است و بيشتر علماى گذشته بر خواندن اين دعا مواظبت مینمودند.

سمات جمع «سِمَه» به معنی علامت و نشانه است. گفته‌اند که چون نشانه‌های استجابت در دعای سمات بسیار است، به این نام نامیده شده است.

دعای سمات را شیخ طوسی در مصباح المتهجد،ابن طاووس در جمال الاسبوع،کفعمی در البلد الامینو مصباح،مجلسی در بحارالانوار و زاد المعاد با سندهای معتبر از محمد بن عثمان عمری (از نواب خاص امام زمان (عج)) با واسطه از امام صادق(ع) و ایشان از پدرشان امام محمد باقر(ع) نقل شده است.

خواندن دعای سمات در آخرین ساعات روز جمعه و شب‌های شنبه مستحب است و نیز هرکه در وقت رفتن به جایی یا طلب حاجتی و یا روی آوردن به دشمنی که از او بیمناک است یا زمامداری که از او هراسان است دعای سمات را بخواند حاجت او برآورده می‌شود و از شر دشمن محفوظ می‌ماند و هر کس نتواند دعای سمات را بخواند این دعا را بنویسد و بر بازوی خود ببندد یا در بغل بگذارد‌‌‌، همان تأثیر را دارد. شیعیان دعای سمات را در ساعات پایانی روز جمعه به صورت جمع در مکان‌های مذهبی، یا به صورت فردی می‌خوانند.
