دعا در قرآن و روایات به عنوان یکی از راه‌های ارتباط با خدا مورد تاکید قرار گرفته و برترین عبادت‌ها شمرده شده است. در آیه ۶۰ سوره غافر خداوند مردم را به دعا کردن امر می‌کند و نوید اجابت می‌دهد. در این آیه دعا نوعی عبادت محسوب شده و ترک ‌کننده آن را از سر بزرگی‌ طلبی بیم دوزخ و عذابی خوارکننده داده است. 

نیایش یا دعا شکلی از رفتار دینی است که هدف از آن ، جستن ارتباط با موجودیتی است که فردِ نیایشگر او را به‌عنوان آفریدگار خود یا موجودی روحانی در نظر می‌گیرد. فرد نیایشگر در دعاهای خود معمولاً خواسته‌ای را از مخاطبِ نیایش خود طلب می‌کند یا از مخاطبِ دعا سپاسگزاری می‌کند. دعاها معمولاً با بیان کردن واژه‌هایی به‌صورت شفاهی یا تداعی آن واژه‌ها در ذهن انجام می‌گیرد و در برخی ادیان شکل رایج‌تر آن به‌صورت نیایش‌ سرایی است.

دعای توسل نام چند دعا است؛ اما یک دعا با همین نام ، شهرتی بیشتر دارد که منبع آن، کتاب بحارالانوار است. مجلسی می‌گوید: دعای توسل را در یکی از نسخه‌های قدیمی که تألیف یکی از اصحابمان می‌باشد یافتم و در آن کتاب این گونه آمده بود: « دعای توسل را محمد بن بابویه از ائمه(ع) روایت کرده و من آن را برای هر چیز خواندم، فوراً اجابت شد». شیعیان ایران دعای توسل را شب‌های چهارشنبه، در مکان‌های مذهبی و به صورت جمعی می‌خوانند. 

دعای توسل از آموزه‌های اعتقادی شیعه و اکثریت مسلمانان است به معنای تمسک به شخصی یا چیزی که نزد خداوند، مقام و ارزش والا دارد، برای تقرب به او و برآورده شدن حاجت‌ها. توسل با آموزه شفاعت پیوند نزدیکی دارد و این دو آموزه معمولاً همراه یکدیگر ذکر می‌شوند.
