Stereogram uses Google Cardboard to present vivid 3D images from history.

Powered by the NYPL Stereogranimator (http://stereo.nypl.org), Stereogram allows you to:

-Search over 40,000 historical stereographs by voice

-Browse popular images from Stereogranimator.

-Curate your own list of favorite stereographs.

-View 3D images of your own

Stereogram requires a special housing for your smartphone, made to the "Google Cardboard" spec: http://cardboard.google.com , such as the DODOcase.

Other 3D/VR viewers such as the Durovis Dive, etc may be supported.

The Nexus 5 is the ideal phone for this app, or any 1080p smartphone that is compatible with Google Cardboard. The experience with other handsets may vary.

It's really cool. The microphone access is for the voice-search interface. The only thing I don't like is that it currently cannot view standard, wide scanned images of stereographs that you've loaded on your phone itself. It currently seems to only work with a JPS file, or two seperate images for right and left. Maybe the developer could add support for wide, single-image jpeg files?

Pretty good. My favorite feature is the small size (~5MB). I don't really want anything fancy. The other apps I looked at were over 10x that size. It does still have a sideways drift problem (which can be somewhat counteracted by quickly moving your head a few times in the other direction). IMHO, the apparent distance of the descriptive text at the bottom (nice feature BTW), needs to be adjusted. It seems much closer than the photograph scene. Reading it with one eye closed helps. I was disappointed that the search function only found three images for "Louisiana Purchase Exposition", and only two of those showed up when I searched for "1904 World's Fair". I know that the Library of Congress has hundreds of stereographs of the Fair. But maybe they're not set up to be found easily (e.g., wrong extension).

The scans seem ok. This is a pretty good app for historical eta holmes viewer images and it has some great conversions for the google cardbord. The controls are ead7 and it tins off eadily ehen your done. I like lt a lot.

The photos are amazing--a real trip back in time. I'll bet the photographers could never have imagined their works would be available in a tool like this, but it is a perfect way to use them. Only problem is that some of the images seem to be out of "registration" so it's hard to get the full 3D effect. Is there any way to be able to "nudge" the images a bit so they get back into registration?

I must salute the effort that went into making this app. It contains over 40,000 pictures, though some are repeated. I have collected stereo-opticon cards for several years and have appreciated them in an old time viewer. Seeing them like this is easier and equally enjoyable. It is easy to move back and forth in this app, though sometimes I don't know where I am in a sequence. Thank you for your efforts. This truly makes the cardboard VR viewer a useful item.

This idea is amazing and I love it! But I want to use it to view stereograms of St. Anthony Falls in Minnesota during the late 1800's and the search doesn't work. I know there are tons of these stereograms in the NYC library system because I can find them on their website but this app fails to pull them up for me to view.

I'm a stereo freak. My favorite ones are Diableries. This app is easy for me because I'm cheating. Na na na boo boo! I'm using Brian May's invention called The OWL. You can learn about it on the London Stereoscopic Society social media pages or Brian May's social media pages. I can usually free view slides, but not on this app. I noticed a review someone needed help getting slides. You can buy slides, or you can go on social media and collect slides. Just observe copyright laws. Brian May is about to release a Queen in 3D book. I found a history book of the railroads done in stereos at a museum. I'm pretty sure I'm the first person to buy one seeing how happy he was. Best way to make it relevant is to show them these cameras are used now by film makers. It's how they make the 3D version.🙂 Sorry about the length. I couldn't find a way to reply.

This is awesome! There is a drift problem for sure, but still amazing to see these historical photos and people, and the neat stereo/3d effects they tried, even in the 1800s. You can even save favorites, share, and all that.

I don't know if it's an issue with my holding the viewer or the application. All I know is that just with sitting and looking at images one after the other the view moves to the right constantly.

Very cool concept. Great options. Love viewing these photos through my cardboard. The only thing I noticed is that I found myself constantly rotating in order to keep the main screen on front of me.
