لاحت من بعيد أكواخٌ صغيرة لكنّها متقاربة مصفوفة بانتظام في مجاميع يفصل بينها ممرّات أرضها مغطاة بزهور صغيرة صفراء. تناهى إلى سمعه صوت أنثوي ناعم، كان يناديه ويكرر كلمة غريبة لم يدرك كنهها!

زمرةٌ من الخيول كانت تركض في تناسقٍ بديعٍ، على إيقاع واحد، أصوات حوافرهم وهي تقدح الأرض يتناغم مع ضربات قلوبهم المتلاحقة، كانت قوائمهم تصطف على التوازي بشكل أنيق وهم يتسابقون، وقد وحّدوا سرعتهم وكأنّهم نسيج واحد، خفّ المطر شيئًا فشيئًا حتى صار كدمع العين هتونًا رقيقًا، وانبثق قوس المطر يزيِّن صفحة السماء ويصافح خط الأفق من بعيد. صهل فرس منهم فعلت جلجلة رفاقه بأصوات صافية مُسْتَدقة، ثُمّ تقدّمهم فلاحقوه ضبحًا حتى وصلوا أخيرًا لبستان واسع أخضر مدهام. لو كنت خيلًا لأجفلت منهم، ولو كنت من البشر لأجفلت منهم أيضًا، فتلك الأصوات التي تعالت عندما هدأ كريرُ صدورهم لم تكن أصوات خيول أبدًا، بل كانت من أصوات البشر!

استدار وأطلق العنان لساقيه , كان يركض وهو يكاد يُسابق الريح التى تلفح وجهه , يكاد يخرج من إهابه من شدة السرعة , والأفكار تتناطح فى رأسه كالبروق المتوالية , من شدة المفاجأة لم ينتبه لركضه نحو هاوية سحيقة بالمنطقة الجبلية التى خرج من الغابة مسرعًا تجاهها عندما رآهم يُطاردونه , لو لحقوا به سيقتلونه , ولو قفز سيموت ! شُل عقله عن التفكير , سيتوقف ويُدافع عن نفسه , وسيحاول الهرب من تلك القرية الظالم أهلها , توقف رغمًا عنه فانزلقت ساقاه بسبب ثقل جسده وهوى ساقطًا بسرعة شديدة , وهو يصرخ نحو سفح الجبل , أغمض عينيه , واستسلم لمصيره وقلبه يخفق بشدة.
