Signal’s advanced privacy-preserving technology is always enabled, so you can focus on sharing the moments that matter with the people who matter to you.

• Say anything – State-of-the-art end-to-end encryption (powered by the open source Signal Protocol™) keeps your conversations secure. Privacy isn’t an optional mode — it’s just the way that Signal works. Every message, every call, every time.

• Go fast – Messages are delivered quickly and reliably, even on slow networks. Signal is optimized to operate in the most constrained environment possible.

• Feel free – Signal is a completely independent 501c3 nonprofit. Development is supported by users like you. No advertisements. No trackers. No kidding.

requires following permissions on your android device.

approximate location (network-based)
Allows the app to get your approximate location. This location is derived by location services using network location sources such as cell towers and Wi-Fi. These location services must be turned on and available to your device for the app to use them. Apps may use this to determine approximately where you are.

precise location (GPS and network-based)
Allows the app to get your precise location using the Global Positioning System (GPS) or network location sources such as cell towers and Wi-Fi. These location services must be turned on and available to your device for the app to use them. Apps may use this to determine where you are, and may consume additional battery power.

view network connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.

view Wi-Fi connections
Allows the app to view information about Wi-Fi networking, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and name of connected Wi-Fi devices.

create accounts and set passwords
Allows the app to use the account authenticator capabilities of the AccountManager, including creating accounts and getting and setting their passwords.

pair with Bluetooth devices
Allows the app to view the configuration of the Bluetooth on the phone, and to make and accept connections with paired devices.

send sticky broadcast
Allows the app to send sticky broadcasts, which remain after the broadcast ends. Excessive use may make the phone slow or unstable by causing it to use too much memory.

send WAP-PUSH-received broadcast
Allows the app to broadcast a notification that a WAP PUSH message has been received. Malicious apps may use this to forge MMS message receipt or to silently replace the content of any webpage with malicious variants.

directly call phone numbers
Allows the app to call phone numbers without your intervention. This may result in unexpected charges or calls. Note that this doesn't allow the app to call emergency numbers. Malicious apps may cost you money by making calls without your confirmation.

take pictures and videos
Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation.

change network connectivity
Allows the app to change the state of network connectivity.

connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
Allows the app to connect to and disconnect from Wi-Fi access points and to make changes to device configuration for Wi-Fi networks.

Allows the app to disable the keylock and any associated password security. For example, the phone disables the keylock when receiving an incoming phone call, then re-enables the keylock when the call is finished.

Allows access to the list of accounts in the Accounts Service.

find accounts on the device
Allows the app to get the list of accounts known by the phone. This may include any accounts created by applications you have installed.

full network access
Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet.

change your audio settings
Allows the app to modify global audio settings such as volume and which speaker is used for output.

read calendar events plus confidential information
Allows the app to read all calendar events stored on your phone, including those of friends or co-workers. This may allow the app to share or save your calendar data, regardless of confidentiality or sensitivity.

read your contacts
Allows the app to read data about your contacts stored on your phone, including the frequency with which you've called, emailed, or communicated in other ways with specific individuals. This permission allows apps to save your contact data, and malicious apps may share contact data without your knowledge.

read the contents of your SD card
Allows the app to read the contents of your SD card.

read phone state
Allows read only access to phone state, including the phone number of the device, current cellular network information, the status of any ongoing calls, and a list of any PhoneAccounts registered on the device.

read your own contact card
Allows the app to read personal profile information stored on your device, such as your name and contact information. This means the app can identify you and may send your profile information to others.

read your text messages (SMS or MMS)
Allows the app to read SMS messages stored on your phone or SIM card. This allows the app to read all SMS messages, regardless of content or confidentiality.

read sync settings
Allows the app to read the sync settings for an account. For example, this can determine whether the People app is synced with an account.

run at startup
Allows the app to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the phone and allow the app to slow down the overall phone by always running.

receive text messages (MMS)

Allows the app to prevent the phone from going to sleep.

add or modify calendar events and send email to guests without owners' knowledge

Being able to name SMS/MMS Groups would be clutch! Please add when you have the time. Makes following conversations much easier. Aside from that, this is the most obvious messaging app to use if you respect yourself, privacy, your friends, and your friends privacy. The quality of encryption and integrity of Signal's team is a work of great passion and protection for what needs to be protected and preserved.

app I've always had a problem with the notifications occasionally not working--someone might message me and I'll never get a notification of any kind. It seems to be worse when I haven't opened the app in a while, so when I'm expecting messages I need to just have it open all the time, which is silly. Just recently, the entire app crashed when I went to check on missed messages. Nothing worked besides reinstalling, which lost all my conversations.

review I really like this app except for one bug, but it is a big bug. Half the time Signal seems to have a lot of trouble with group messaging. The message won't download and instead will show up as an undownloaded message in the person's individual thread instead of the group thread. This is a huge problem. But I love the security, and everything else about the app is great. Please fix this or I'll be forced to stop using it.

apk New2Signal. First observations: 1) Camera remains active during call when on other screens/pages (Android), but on IOS, the camera pauses when on another screen/page. This is opposite to norms. There are no settings for Android to change this. 2) Settings/options are very limited. 3) To return to video call, I need to go via the notifications. It is not clear where my call is on the Signal home screen. This is my testing alt messengers. I don't think I'll be here for long. We'll see.

desktop Definitely like it. As an originator of the signal protocol you know they know it. It looks and functions like my messaging service so I am able to swap over without feeling like I have a new app or worse, new social media account. Just install, grant permissions, verify your number and, replace the app on your home screen. Would appreciate a dedicated dialer icon. Its bit extra/doesn't default to Signal to make a call as it is.

download Mandatory pin is annoying, and you cannot diaable. If you don't enter a pin, the reminder to input a pin takes up half your screen. Once you enter pin, it will remind you constantly to enter a pin. Devs, remove the pin. Big security risk now as is now stored in their cloud. Needs to go back to local only. Another huge problem with Signal is you cannot install it on a standalone device that doesn't have a sim card, unless you link it to some other device with a sim, which doesn't suit anyone.

stock Overall signal is a pretty good messenger, it's fast it works well, it's secure. One thing lacking for signal is that the desktop versions do not have all the same features that the mobile versions have. For example you cannot take a backup from your computer, it would be nice if you could sync all your messages to your computer and then have the backup taken there, then you don't really have to rely on cloud storage so much, or hoping that the device that's holding the backup is not destroyed.

mod apk I love this app it has most essential features of a secure messenger but it lacks one crucial feature i.e it is super slow, messages are either not delivered in realtime or delivered very late, sometimes after few hours. It fails me when i need it the most. Due to this glitch and irritation most of contacts again migrated to whatsapp. So in a nutshell nobody loves a slow, laggy, glitchy experience even if it is superior from security and privacy point of view. Signal team please take a note.

mac So far this app is ok. I have no way to test the encryption. If someone sends a VCard from an iPhone it freezes the app. A few messages aren't sent now and then. Edit: After a few months, I like it even less. Many unsent and unrecieved messages, especially in group chats. I can almost never send pictures. Often my unsent message alerts don't register, so I don't know that my message didn't go through.

for pc So far it's ok. I love what it is. Had to uninstall and reinstall. It won't accept pictures coming in as mms from other text apps like Google which is tough. I know the developers will step it up. I'd switched from Samsung's app to Google messaging, then to this. I love how smooth and fluid Google is. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, but I need to get the mms messages in being sent.

This message app works way better than the default one that came with the phone. I began to have difficulties with the default message app that came with my phone. After a few months the default message app started to not send all messages, or the messages took too long to load.. forcing me to have to reset my phone just to get the messages to appear. Signal PM saved me from the trouble of having to go through that again. Thanks Signal.

Works great so far. I am able to message friends in other countries with ease. The app is fast. I would like to have the option to select a later time for my text to send. Sometimes it is hard to remember what time it is where my friends are and I dont want to send them a message late at night their time. Thanks

Easy to use. Very secure. Free to use. Increasing number of features over time. Relatively few users, say, compared with WhatsApp and that's a bit of a problem but I'm convinced that Signal is the app to use if you want true communication security without Mark Z looking over your shoulder.

Had to get new phone & can't seem to figure out settings in conjunction with the standard Message app that comes with phone. Can't get "set as default" Messaging app or SMS to work out. Not tech savvy, but once I get it to function in coordination with other Message app, I really like it. Frustrated til then.

Unlike with WhatsApp, the desktop version of this app can be used without we having to run the mobile version also. This makes for convenience. What I don’t like about the desktop version of this app are 1) sometimes, messages sent using it are not reflected on my phone; 2) in the event some of those messages are reflected on my phone, they are not presented in chronological order. For example, a message sent at, say, 10 a.m. is shown on my phone as well as on my contact’s phone after the messages I have sent later at, say, 12 noon, 1.00 p.m., and 2.00 p.m. on the same day. On this score, Telegram functions better. REVISED REVIEW TODAY 12 Oct 2020 The problems mentioned in my first review are no more. Signal is now my messaging app of choice, and those closest to me have all migrated to it..

Bloody good iv'e been using it for about 6 years now . cant say enough about its privacy features . It's end to end encryptyion with as little to no interference at its finest . Absolutely wonderful for the business community or anyone requiring, clear and private communications services ,with utter control of thier data , at all times . its also open source . literally can't say enough . Massive thank you to the developers and contributors to this evolving entity this has become .

The whole reason we started using this for work was because it's supposed to be encrypted and it has the "disappearing" messages option for anything confidential that is discussed. Yeah, that doesn't work. I still have to go in manually and delete all of the texts. Not very useful.

3 major issues: 1) If recipient isn't online they won't receive signal secure message until online. You aren't notified whether it's received or not without checking (why not notify sender after eg 10 min?). If unreceived, you need to send again as SMS. 2) The app doesn't run in background. My sister sent me lots of messages over a week. I wasn't notified till she SMSd me. I had to load the app to receive them. Pointless! 3) It fails to import my SMS messages from Google Messages (Huawei p30).

Used to be good, turned to garbage. The last straw is mandatory profile names. The app is locked to a single device/phone number so forcing profiles is senseless. I realize they are encrypted in the Amazon (spy) cloud but who cares. I want to sms/message people by phone number or vice-versa; requiring a profile name & forcing me to use "a" or "anonymous" as suggested by their documentation is rediculous and unnecessary. Also, calls barely work anymore but I type more than 500 chars to explain..

I've been using signal for over a year and have it set as my default messenger. Over the last couple months, and wuth increasing regularity, none of my new messages will show unless I open the app. Also - calls and messages aren't sending or being received either at all or on time (example - as I'm sendinng a message, one will come through from their end timestamped for an hour earlier). Friends are having the same problem.

Mark as read sometimes fails across devices/with some people, not sure why. Can't save gifs in note to self to forward to someone else later and the GIFs are annoying to have to load & scroll through. Can't transfer from 1Linux laptop to my new Linux laptop, really sucks to lose all messages 😔 otherwise happy about it even though it requires a phone to set up( & wants a few permissions...) Will continue to select Signal as Amazon Smile for donations in the hope it improves.

most slow file /image / video sending app I have ever seen, plz try to make it faster when I am sending any kind of file, most of the time it's unable to grab network speed every time when I update this app, I think it should be solved, but same thing remains, not only on my device/ my network operator, it's happens everyone's device which I saw. may be my language is not perfect, but I hope the developing team will understand what I meant to say

Mediocre at best. If this is the best alternative to Whatsapp for secure messaging and the alternative to Pulse for SMS, then no thanks. Hangs, bombs, App stops working, and lacks the many nice SMS managing features of Pulse. Uninstall. Go back to Pulse for SMS and keep looking for a WhatsApp alternative for secure data messaging.

  24. Marcel-avatar

I switched to signal for standard messages. Last year I decided to go back to the default SMS app. You have to consider, that if you don't have deep knowledge about converting tools and command line commands you will loos all messages when you will go back to standard SMS apps.

The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is due to a recent bug I've been experiencing. When I'm in a group chat and also have a separate chat with someone who's also in the group chat, I receive double notifications. For example, if friend A sends a message in the group chat, I receive a notification for the group chat and then another notification for the separate chat with friend A. It's a really annoying problem and I hope it's fixed in the next update.

I LOVE I CAN SET EVERYBODY TO A DIFFERENT COLOR. I LOVE THE IMPORT FEATURE FROM DEFAULT SMS APP. I love that it has you confirm your display name in setup. There are only two flaws: not enough people use it, and attaching pictures is awkward compared to default/stock messaging apps. It only adds 1 second, maybe 1.5 to sending a picture. Stock messaging assumes you want to add one of your most recently accessed pictures, and this doesn't. That's not enough for me to stop using the app.

Serious bug. I broke my phone and and later got it fixed. So i installed signal again and everything worked fine except that I can't re-join a group. Group members tried to get me back into the group but they say that I'm already in the group. The same problem is happening to other group members who lost their phones. Please fix. Thx

Marginal overall performance. System latency can be as long as several hours for a message to be delivered. They're also seems to be an issue with group replies. This used to be a great application but it's performance has declined during the last year. Never had these issues with my default messaging application

Unusable with multiple devices. If you don't open the app on one device for a while it want's to load all messages that were sent meanwhile from top down and it can take hours just so I can read a recent text from someone? And sometimes even that doesn't work, it just starts spamming "Bad encrypted message" for every message. Extremely buggy and unreliable.

For certain contacts, messages are marked as sent but never delivered, sometimes for hours until I send another message. I had several messages sent to one of these contacts last night and they were only marked sent until I messaged them this morning, at which point all of the messages were marked delivered. I see this has been an ongoing issues since 2017 according to github. This unreliability makes using signal as my primary messenger difficult, although I would like to use it exclusively.

I read an article about Signal Private Messenger on a Tech website several years ago. I immediately installed it in ny phone to give it a try. Then I asked a security conscious friend to install Signal. Since then Signal has become the default messaging app on any phone I own. The only disappointment has been that so few people I know use Signal. I prefer security, first and foremost. I was thrilled when disappearing messages was added to Signal Private Messenger. Thank you for a great app!

I've been using Signal for some time now. At the moment I cannot send any attachment since the last upgrade. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Also, previously larger attachments took forever to upload and send or simply failed. A very large active conversation also caused the inability to reply on messages. Is there no QA before releasing new versions? This is very frustrating.

Huge fan of the privacy and encryption that Signal brings to the everyday user. Very recently, I stopped getting notifications for messages sent from other Signal users until I open the app, where they then come pouring in. It makes it very annoying when trying to use it as my default messenger.

I wish more people knew about this messaging app. It's awesome. In addition to end-to-end encryption, the parent co. is an NGO so user privacy will always be a priority over (undue) profit (at the expense of individual privacy). Can't say enough good things about it.

Works very well. Imported my texts from my non-encrytped messaging app with no problem. Only issue so far is going back to edit longer texts as I can't seem to open a large enough dialogue box to view the entire text at once and scrolling is something of a pain in the neck.

I had signal for almost 2 years now. It was very perfect and efficient except it was killing my data plan then suddenly it started to crash a lot , a lot of msgs wouldn't be sent. Now any media msg can not be sent and any reply can not be sent .. not only that it also wouldn't send normal text msgs .. I tried to uninstall and reinstall cause i used to love it but the problem still exists.. Please update or fix the problems. Thanks

Really gotta hand it to them, great app. I wish it had an auto reply function, but I don't think that works without compromising some sort of security through the app. 10/10 for me, wish the desktop version was nicer but I can't complain.

This is a great app as far as security is concerned . But it does need some refinements Princess many times you don't hear it ring , as well is the fact that if you get another incoming call it knocks your signal call out.

Done w Signal. A week ago 4 + years of texts and images disappeared, poof. Tried link to "developers" and didn't hear anything back. Same thing happened to my brother a month ago. If I can't depend on it, it is worthless. I guess you get what you pay for. Later.

The app works great most of the timw but when I enter a voice call (haven't tried video yet) then it goes SUPER SLOW AND IRRESPONSIVE. I can't use any of the UI without it taking 10 seconds to respond for any taps on the screen. It is AWFUL

It would be nice if Signal had an option to not have to hold that microphone button, while recording a message. Plus, it would be nice to be able to decide if you want to send your recording or not. Love Signal. The flexibility for sending media is great and generally the app works well. Lately I'm seeing some glitches causing messages to get stuck with certain people. It may be a problem with the read receipt function and notifications. Read receipts aren't updating properly and notifications sometimes display over the open chat window. Also, I used to be able to set a separate PIN for signal without a lock on phone, but now I have to have a lock on my phone to lock signal at all.

Lots of things that are not super intuitive. I keep this app because I know it's the best for privacy. But the app is not that well made. Sending a photo is a nightmare, always glitchy and the path is paved with obstacle. Another thing, sending gifs is super important for me in a conversation, but they're not easy to reach, plus they're suuuuper small in the thread. There is still lots of work to do. But overall, still the most private and that's what matters.

Signal store data on servers. defeating the whole point of private messaging if there's a backup for government to access. Meta-data / phone registration = no encryption. And now signal messages don't come through properly... Signal, WhatsApp, imessage... = no encryption. It's all a fallacy. Android/i-phone are designed to work around encryption rendering private messaging redundant. Modern phones allow access to our GPS, messages, camera... Want privacy? DON'T USE A SMARTPHONE

This is definitely my preferred messaging app regardless of current flaws. That being said, it can be buggy at times. Updates fix one problem and create another. The latest one is getting notified twice for messages even if I've already replied to them after the first. Also, the old theme was much nicer looking and more compact than the current theme with no option to use the old one. I absolutely love the end-to-end encryption and being able to lock the app automatically, so it's all worth it.

The Signal app permissions are everything your father* warned you about. If it was possible to compromise the app, your phone is someone else's. I already have three apps like this, Facebook, Messenger, and Whatsapp, and that's solely because of family. I love the idea of Signal, opensource secure anonymous messaging, but how secure is an app when it has enough permissions to own your entire smartphone if it is compromised? I know it could be worse... but it could be a great deal better.

Been using the app for a while now, and have been generally happy with it, until a couple of days ago when my messages weren't sending and my phone was struggling to connect to LTE. After troubleshooting my data, I realized the problem was with the signal app itself. I'm not sure why it had an effect on my data, but after installing and reinstalling everything is working fine now. However, it did delete all of my messages. This is a very very good and secure application for messenger service. But there is no option to delete messages from everyone. This feature may be the uppermost problem for Signal users. I've only used a couple different messenger apps outside of the native ones that came pre-installed on phones I've had,, and I gotta say that Signal is among the best I've tried. Very nice functionally. The only thing I really miss about my old app is theme customization. I liked being able to choose backgrounds of text windows and individuals' texts, fonts, size and color. I like the new emoji look. They're larger and look almost animated. Another great feature is the ability to delete sent texts! We've all sent texts to the wrong person or sent something we immediately regretted😬 Now we can snatch those regrets, hopefully, before they're read.🤐 Overall a nice app.

It's just very easy to use, very powerful, and I wish everyone would use encryption and private networks to keep our data, conversations, as well as who we contact when and how often private. It's just the American way, all those programs or there we have all been warned exist, and probably a ton of others none of us every will hear about. Only thing I don't like about this app is not receiving incoming messages when the app itself is closed. In other words, you have be operating inside the app to receive messages in real time. if you don't, you will receive messages way later than when they sent. You only see those messages once you open the app again. This for me is a problem.

  114. Subridio-avatar

Excellent app, both mobile and desktop. The only thing I would like is for the desktop app to support easier selection and deletion of a subset of messages rather than just individually or by deleting entire conversations. I know that not particularly relevant to this forum but worth mentioning as most will use both. Overall much better in my view than WhatsApp for the independent ownership and hitherto better reputation of Signal for privacy and security.

Just stopped working. There was no update, nothing new on the phone. Just suddenly opened to a blank screen, with only the menu, new conversation, and camera buttons, and wouldn't respond to anything. Some of my conversations apparently started getting repeatedly spammed with the last message I sent. Clearing cache, or restarting the phone didn't help. Only reinstalling fixed the problem.

Good. One issue is you can't delete a thread unless every person unjoins it, and so if anyone in the thread isn't around anymore, the threads stay open forever. Also, would love if there was a search button at the top, because it is hard as hell reading through hundreds of messages trying to find one. Thanks.

Very well-thought-out design and reliable functionality, but still a bit 'rough around the edges'. Sometimes when I send a link to someone, then close the app then go back in, it has re-inserted the link into the fresh text field as if I was going to send it again. Odd.

The only messenging app worth using. *All* others either have backdoors that leak your messages, don't even try to encrypt, spy on you, embed ads, or cost money to use. Signal is free (as in freedom), private, and secure. It's funded by donations and endowments. However, I do not use it to send SMS/MMS since it was not able to import MMS messages from the Google app on my phone. While the new pin does allow opt-out, using a password vault (like KeePassDX) allows you to use a complex pin easily.

Signal is the way to go with an android phone for SMS/MMS needs. full disclosure: signal to signal comms are fully encrypted, so I'd like to see their base grow! my positive rating for signal, however, is absent of special interest, it does exactly what I want. it's ux focuses on the message not the platform, as it should be.

Highly recommended to replace Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger. However, the group chat feature is lacking some important functionality, as there are no chat admins who could remove participants. Also note that the Disappearing Messages functionality should be set in advance (and must be set in every chat), as the setting only applies to the messages sent afterwards. If you don’t use Disappearing Messages, deleting a message deletes it only from your own chat history.

Unfortunately Signal still lacks some features from modern messenger apps, like visualizing whether a contact is online, and seamless synchronization of chat messages and chat deletions among several devices. Also, many times the encryption "loses sync" and a flooding of error messages appear, what is really annoying. Considering that nowadays there are better apps which also offer data encryption, Signal is losing its competitive edge, unfortunately.

Excellent app. The double, even triple security redundancy levels are excellent. Only thing that I wish was optional, is the invite option requirement. Hard to get a business, i.e., bank to help make any messages sent encrypted and that little extra Signal help. Not a complaint just a suggestive wish.
