PROS: Excellent location accuracy without undue battery impact. The MQTT based communication between family members' devices is a model for how apps should be designed and implemented, when it works. CONS: Fails to report location events reliably. The app user interface is missing some critical features and the JSON API is a bit cumbersome. Overall, this app would be awesome if as much effort were put into the Android version as appears to be given to iOS.

I've been using this for my family for a while now. It works great. Devs are very helpful and responsive via github. There are some nuances to how the reporting actually happens, and it's all clearly described in the documentation. Some reviewers complain that the location is wrong, but it's just how the Android significant changes API works. These people need to read the documentation!! It's all configurable, and you can push updates out to clients which is great.

The new UI is confusing on whether it's in a mode of reporting or not. There is a single button that toggles from "pause icon", "play icon", "play icon with pause on side?" and "stop icon". The only thing I know is they relate to reporting but I don't know how. I can find documentation either describing what this new UI button is. Please help us out with some updated documentation or some text on the button or something.

I understand the attraction of "sparse", but there is a fine line between that and "absent" when it comes to documentation. The app has for some hours now been reporting my location as being several hundred metres away from where I actually am, and does not seem inclined to refresh itself. There are some buttons at the top of the screen which look like "play", "stop" and "fast forward", but quite what they do is a mystery which the documention does not cast any light on (unless the information under the iOS section is intended to be relevant). The only way I've been able to get it to work is to place it in a mode which simultaneously drains my battery and consumes my finite stock of monthly webhook requests. Returning (reluctantly) to google.

Incredibly cool app! Once you get through the configuration (a bit complex but worth the effort and very customizable) it serves as a great, security-focussed alternative to other closed-source location sharing apps/systems from Google/Apple/etc. I highly recommend using Owntracks Recorder and Mosquitto MQTT broker as the backend for this app. If you don't need full MQTT, Recorder's HTTP endpoint works really well on Android. Happy tracking!

Seems to be broken atm. Keeps getting a notification that just says "Error" on my home screen. The notification cannot be dismissed or removed with a swipe. Very annoying, also can't add region by current location, as the locate button is missing. Instead I can type in long/lat. Will update review as soon as the app is working again.

Terribly difficult to setup (ever started an mqqt server?), but once up and running, it's perfect! Free, opensource, private.

Only get socket error on client , disconnecting. When attempting to connect to mqtt broker that comes with home assistant. Awful UI, and worse documentation.

it does not detect any of my beacon (while other devices/bt scanning do) and it's very frustrating that screenshots on their support website do not match the app.

OwnTracks is awesome. I have it integrated with Home Assistant and run automations based on if I'm home or not.
