It times correctly from the start of a contraction to the start of the next contraction. It has the start stop button at the bottom which is where it is easiest to press when holding the phone with 1 hand, and trust me you don't have 2 hands when you need to time contractions. Also, nicely let's you set the number of previous contractions to create the avg contraction time based on, which is nice when you stop timing for a couple of hours and start back up again.
