It is consuming loads of battery by running in the background even when not needed. It does not connect well with the AVR. It is unable to switch on the system unless the app has been used to switch it off. That is a serious flaw. So, if you use remote to switch off, then the app does not respond. The app needs to be reloaded multiple times to detect the device. That's is very bad. Ease of use is very bad. We have to use multiple apps. Like HEOS for music. Juggling apps is difficult.

  2. Neil Turley-avatar

    Neil Turley

This has to be the worst, most counter-intuitive app I have ever had the misfortune to use. I've got it to work (ahem) but have gone round in circles for two hours trying to fathom out how to use it. Perhaps today's 3-year olds may have some success here but if, like me, you are over 60 then please stay sane and don't go anywhere near it. I'll keep trying as I'm that sorry of person but I don't hold out much hope. Very, very disappointed Denon as I expected so much more ........

  3. Jason Cottrell-avatar

    Jason Cottrell

Nevermind the fact that Denon is being douchebags and only enabling EARC on certain models even though there are so many more that are capable, the app itself is a disaster. It's slow, the layout is clunky and eversince the last update it just shows my receiver as off. I've reset my phone, receiver even cleared the apps data, nothing works. It seems my receiver bit refuses to accept that it's being used. Might be ditching this brand

  4. Dante-avatar

This app is a joke anymore. The most recent update is so buggy it will kill your battery in an hour flat if you forget to force kill the app. It doesn't even automatically close so unless you mash the back button and force close it, it runs in the background and drains your battery very quickly. Why don't you guys just shop out the app development to someone else? Your hardware is great. Your software stinks.

  5. Ronen Givon-avatar

    Ronen Givon

The application is extremely slow to connect to the AVR. It gulps the battery and doesn't have an exit button that would gracefully stop draining it. Keeping the application alive does not minimize the time it is ready to send commands to the AVR so one would benefit from killing it once you managed to set what you wanted to set on the AVR. Overall, the application needs a rewrite (Android 10) and quick. A Remote Control should work with more control

  6. Cameron Smith-avatar

    Cameron Smith

It works most of the time. Sometimes I'll have to close and restart to get it to connect. Coming from a Yamaha receiver that had an excellent app that even had a good widget, this leaves much to be desired. I used to rarely touch my Yamaha remote but I need to keep my Denon remote close now because this app is soooooo slow. I don't even care about the widget. Please just make it run well.

  7. KILLER SOUND-avatar

Poor app! Sort it out Denon. Such a big brand should do a lot better, considering your customers spend £1000's on your products. Very slow to respond or connect. Drains battery power like nothing else and glitches often with the wrong information showing. Do you think i want to spend £20 on the calibration app now? (Have you seen the reviews?)

  8. Al Velasco-avatar

    Al Velasco

This App is used in conjunction with my Denon AVR-X1400H (owned for a couple of years), each update I thought was great, but I have had my share of problems with it especially after each update. Turns out that my router settings was causing the problem. Don't give up on this App, it's more user friendly than the remote control.

  9. Jason Hershfield-avatar

    Jason Hershfield

Slow and buggy. Eats battery super fast. Why is Heos a separate app and why are the built in Heos controls so limited? Network AVR with a buggy app? Umm.... Houston... We have a problem. And I have a soon to be big metal box that will be collecting dust in the garage.

  10. Michael Schuerman-avatar

    Michael Schuerman

Love this app when it works, but it fails so often, it's a coin toss as to whether or not it will work. That makes it all but worthless. Spend alot of money on this "smart receiver". Should've kept my old one. Unbelievable

  11. Yuri Y-avatar

    Yuri Y

Unbelievably terrible app for such a quality brand. App draws some SERIOUS battery in background. No idea why. 15% in 2 hrs. Freezes constantly. Very glitchy. Extremely slow to respond to any input. Wish I never bought Denon thinking their HEOS and remote app is a quality product like their hardware used to be.

  12. Steven Long-avatar

    Steven Long

Terrible app for an expensive piece of equipment. Very slow. Poor response. Unclear menus. Has to use extra apps to do basic functions. Places notification of running in back ground 1) don't display useless info 2) why does this have to run in background 3) doesn't help the app in any way, still takes a long time to run

  13. Matthew Lowry-avatar

    Matthew Lowry

When it works, it's great. But waay too many bugs for a full 5 stars. Freezes, has to be restarted frequently, drains battery life. Come on guys.

  14. Drum DeLorean-avatar

    Drum DeLorean

This app is great! I have the avrs 750h and it works really good. I love the eq that I can use on each speaker. It sounds brilliant and more detailed than it was before! Not sure why the rating on this app is so low.

  15. David Diehl-avatar

    David Diehl

Good app and great to have when you've misplaced your remote. Nice layout and easy-to-use! (Now, if I don't misplace my phone, I'm all set! 😂😂)

  16. Chris Campbell-avatar

    Chris Campbell

It's very slow and clunky. Sometimes doesn't recognize the amp on the network at all. Interface is incredibly slow and does weird things like cut out the sound when you click to change the setting.

  17. Shelby Highsmith-avatar

    Shelby Highsmith

Doesn't detect my brand new AVR-S750H at all. I try to add manually and it says I can't do that from the app, see product manual. Manual doesn't say anything. No setup option in menu on device. Total false advertising on Denon's part. Garbage.

  18. Garrett Graves-avatar

    Garrett Graves

It works, but it is very slow and absolutely CRUSHES battery life. 30% usage over the last 6 hours while running in background.

  19. Arthur Udler-avatar

    Arthur Udler

It does not work! No more Denons for me. It is incredibly complex to control your DVR without some sort of app.

  20. Christopher Looi-avatar

    Christopher Looi

App worked after initial WiFi setup but then AVR will get router access error after a while. Constantly need to perform network reset on the AVR to make it work again. Not good.

  21. Adrian Radu-avatar

Just i get " services running in background" but when i try to open the app, just loading... before upgrade worked well, now .. only one star for wasting my time.

  22. Myron Hobizal-avatar

    Myron Hobizal

Very slow with my new 2020 Denon receiver. Sometimes the app doesn't even find my receiver on the network. Also the background service drains phone battery significantly. This is unacceptable.

  23. Heather England-avatar

    Heather England

Buggy and clumsy to navigate. As much as I paid for the receiver I would have expected a much better app to use with it.

  24. ran yedidya-avatar

Old design, not so user friendly, stays open and dry battery until forced to stop. You guys need to work on it and bring it to the next level.

  25. Drezzle Bop-avatar

    Drezzle Bop

No longer connects to my AVR-S720W. Worked when I first bought the receiver; update broke it. Tried to report using in app Help but device list is empty. Sent email, no response. Latest update didn't fix.

  26. Rob Cooper-avatar

    Rob Cooper

Works sometimes. Often cannot find receiver. When it does work it's usually very slow. Could be more user friendly.

  27. Jennifer Woodruff-avatar

If I could give it zero I would. Mind numbingly slow or consistently crashes. Denon sucks. Dont waste your time or money. Worst POS ever. However, if you like being frustrated, this equipment and app is PERFECT for you.

  28. Jonathan Avalos-avatar

Super glitchy its always glitching it doesn't turn on all my surround speakers and then sometimes it does. I'm tired of it honestly I feel like getting rid of my equipment.

  29. Pär Gustafsson-avatar

Slow and clunky with sync issues that often requires an app restart. Expected a lot more from a high-end manufacturer as Denon.

  30. Chris Chiang-avatar

  51. Jason Li-avatar

    Jason Li

It automatically detected my S750H with no fuss and I'm able to do everything I can do with my remote, including volume control from the volume buttons on my phone. However, it's very slow and absolutely destroys my battery if I leave it on in the background so I always manually kill the app every time I'm done tweaking anything. Denon really needs to update the app and get this up to date with modern standards.

  52. Ryan Blakeslee-avatar

    Ryan Blakeslee

Oops, I hope you didn't forget to kill the app before walking away from your charger. 48% battery usage in 4 hours. Which works out to 500mah per hour. Nice job guys. A remote control app that doesn't go to sleep ever unless you force it into deep sleep via the powersettings and then if you do the app closes completely the moment that you switch tasks.

I installed it to my Samsung Note 10+ yestrrday morning , most of the time my phone usually still has 50% battery left at night. When I got home I saw my phone has 5% left, went to check battery usage, surprisingly this App drained 49% of my battery for 8 hours running in background even i want at home.

  55. Ian Jordan-avatar

    Ian Jordan

Do not leave this running in the background. Will chew up your battery in a few hours.

  56. Mick-avatar

It works, but is really really sluggish, frustratingly slow. You spend most of your time in the app waiting for that bloody circle to go. There's no reason for it, as if I connect direct to the web UI that is snappy, with no waiting. Only problem with the Web UI is there is no volume or level control. There is a third party app similarly named which is also quite snappy. If he can do it then.....come on Denon catch up please.

  57. Jeff Williamson-avatar

    Jeff Williamson

Don't waste your time, app can't ever seem to find the receiver to connect to and destroys your phone battery unless you force close it every time.

  58. Sean Irwin-avatar

    Sean Irwin

The app used to work well. I occasionally had connection issues, but these would be resolved by connecting again. The app has always been a drain on the battery. But now since the latest update this month, I can no longer connect to my X4400H. So currently the app is unusable. Please fix this, as I enjoyed using the app. I am using a Samsung S20 Ultra.

  59. Steve Murray-avatar

    Steve Murray

Works fine for my amp, but kills my battery if I leave it in background. There is no logical reason for it to do anything in background, so it's a big issue with the code.

  60. Bojan Nikocevic-avatar

    Bojan Nikocevic

This is so bad app that it is unbelievable. As it is from 2010. It can't be slower. One would think this app is from a Chinese manufacturer. Denon should be ashamed for having such a bad app

  62. Rolf van der Kwaak-avatar

Power and battery consuming app. 10 minutes active and 45% of battery in 12 hours. Android v10 When is there an update of this app coming? 20200905 post updated. And wow!! 1 star app score. Really denon unworthy quality. Please do something about this.

  63. A Google user-avatar

Current version is a good app. Very informative about current status and useful for some settings. But as for controlling the unit every day, I would rather reach for the remote control as it is so much quicker and easier to use than a mobile app. This is not unique to this app or device either, likewise for any device controller app. Apps are best when searching for media to play.

  64. Samantha Glenn-avatar

    Samantha Glenn

Always worked slow and hard to pull up when you need it. Now it either never finds our device or crashes when you try to choose it. Can only use the receiver manually now, this app is useless.

  65. Chandler Dollins-avatar

    Chandler Dollins

Drains battery while operating in the background after closing the app. You can change this under device health settings on your android device to help, however having that enabled means if you truly use this app as a remove then you will have a poor user experience changing system volume while watching a movie utilizing your AVR. Then general GUI/ easy of use isn't too bad once you go through all the options a few times.

  66. Joel Simkins-avatar

    Joel Simkins

Garbage. The app consumes so much energy that my Galaxy Note 9 keeps alerting me that this is a problem and recommends that I shut it down... Even if app isn't in use. Streaming my own music across my network works badly, because the app depends on DLNA, and there isn't enough space here to explain why DLNA is awful. But it is.

  67. Lee Kibble-avatar

Galaxy S9+, message appears on my phone to warn me that this app is draining my battery! Add the 'status' front panel button to the app. You can't do that from the remote. Using with X3700H

Will there ever be a version of this which doesn't drain battery when I'm not using it? Could it not detect that I have stopped using it and simply turn off? This app seems to use more battery when I'm not using it, how is that possible!? Apart from that, it works most of the time but after a while will suddenly switch to my main speakers... Why?

  70. Stephen Bissett-avatar

I left a rant on here and gave 1 star after the app simply failed to find my new receiver. I was livid. Since then I discovered the problem: check the receiver and phone are on the same named wifi network frequency as each other (mine splits into 2.5/5 etc). Denon should remind you to do this and I only know having had a problem with Sonos previously. Anyway, app is good.Just found how to turn off the Audacity multi Eq without having to redo setup, which is very useful.

Functional, but absolutely killing my battery. Multiple times I have checked Android's battery stats and found this app to be using more than 50% of the CPU cycles. Also getting messages about an app overloading the system (CPU) and when checked it shows this app is at over 20% of system load.

  73. MrMalvado78-avatar

This app is pure garbage and an embarrassment for a company like Denon. I'm not sure what's worse though their crappy app or their lack of a response/fix. It's obvious by reading through the comments that this has been going on for years, and that's just completely unacceptable. Hire some damn developers and rebuild it from the ground up...It's not like you're a small business with very limited resources. Yamaha's AV Controller blows Denon's out of the water, big time.

The app works but runs in the back ground and drains your battery at a unbelievable rate. Must admit, Denon's Android app has been working pretty flawlessly for some time now. Compared to competitors apps, this one is supported beyond average life of most av receivers, smart av devices in general. It's navigation is decent and works very well. Had it's issues in the past but Denon's willing to keep it alive. Much appreciated.I will definitely be loyal to a company that's loyal to it's customers.

App no longer works. I select my system and it closes the app. I've reset, erased all data, and installed the app again but still doesn't work. Used to work great but hasn't for about a week. Unable to find a resolution for this issue.

App works well enough usually but it has a bad UI and runs in the background wasting battery for hours until you remember to force close it. Needs serious updating.

  83. AW Heaton-avatar

    AW Heaton

Not user friendly at all. Lacks ability to actually do very much due to very limited feature controls, and the one feature that I do appreciate (the ability to adjust subwoofer db) annoyingly briefly cuts out ALL audio across all speakers. Drains mobile device battery.

Unfortunately this app is the worst part about owning a Denon AVR. I really like all of the other features, but this app is slow and unreliable. I often have to force close and reopen the app just to change the HDMI input.

This app is pretty unreliable. Sometimes it loads. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you can use it, sometimes you can't. When it does load and is responsive, it's great. Unfortunately that only happens about 25% of the time.

Seriously needs looking at battery drain on your app. Had to manually ensure its closed and no background use taken over 20% of my battery in 3 hours with only 1 minute of actual use. The app itself is OK do get connection issues every now and again.

Used it simply to change one setting. 3 hours later I noticed by phone battery was almost gone. It turns out this app used over 31% of my battery. It connects well but my God the battery drain is horrific.

Since the last receiver update the receiver can't be found in the app. However when I open a webbrowser and type in the local ip of the receiver it is visible and accessible in my local network. The receiver can't be found in the HEOS app either.

Communication is not healthy with the receiver. Especially after the last update, even turning it on and off is a challenge. In general no to Denon

Does what it claims but at a cost: it eats battery juice like no other app that I use. Yesterday it alone used 26% of my battery while I only used it for 1min according to the battery usage analytics in android.

I have been using this app for a week now and as yet have not experienced any issues as described in other reviews. The only fault I can find is that you can not power up the receiver from the app, but must first power on without the remote. Once the amp is on, the app finds the device every time. This is a little annoying as with my previous receiver avr x2000, you were able to power on in the app. Using this app alongside the Heos app, they both work seamlessly once you get used to the menus.

  139. Cristian Jecu-avatar

    Cristian Jecu

It is too slow to start. Sometimes it doesn't even find the AVR, that has a static IP and on the same wifi it connected last. If I really need the denon remote functions, it is faster to search for the real remote in the room. If I only need to se the volume it is faster to open the remote app of the sound source like the TV or PC. So most of the time I use this app, I see the loading screen... maybe Denon should be able to do a better app.

The app works... most of the time... but it's very slow to load and remains open draining my battery in 2-3 hours if I don't force close it. Reminds me of the old days when apps poorly managed resources.

Worked great for set up and adjusting the first time I used it. Like other reviews said. I can't even use it anymore. App finds my AVR but then locks up and crashes.. EVERY SINGLE TIME. It's not a glitch, it's a fatal flaw. I love the app and receiver when it works. I hope Denon will respond and fix it.

Eats battery! Features not much better than web interface. Using with AVR-X4500H. Even when not in use, the app seems to drink power and overheat phone. Android keeps prompting me to close it. Interface is just a skin on the web interface to the device, so it adds little in the way of functions. Just pin the web page and you will have a better experience! Nice amp, shame about the software. Uninstalled.

  144. Simon Buttler-avatar

Started to not work properly. After 2 months of having a denon av receiver with 'dumb' speakers it no longer detects the actual av receiver? I moved from a 5.1 sonos and its amazing how rubbish this app / set up is from denon, i guess they need to invest more into software. Also, volume control does not work in the heos app, i have to switch to this (now not working) app to change volume! Amateur hour.

  145. Nicolai Klausen-avatar

    Nicolai Klausen

The only positive thing about this app, is that it starts (if you have not closed it while waiting...). It is so slow, that it's not possible to know if any of your selections have been received. It's so bad, that you will end up doing a self denial of service, as you will repeat your selections over and over again which will result in unpredictable action and often lockdown the app.

  146. Stephen Bennett-avatar

    Stephen Bennett

Disappointing! Such fantastic amps, yet such an appalling app. Drained 43% of my battery while doing nothing. Exceptionally sluggish when actually using it. Come on Denon, you're supposed to be offering premium products - not rubbish like this!

  147. Duncan Stokes-avatar

    Duncan Stokes

Phone reports this app as using excessive cpu, and it drains my battery like mad. On top of that it usually struggles to connect to the reciever taking around 30 seconds or so every time you open it. And yes you have to kill it inbetween use's otherwise it drains the phone in the background ! Expected more to be honest.

  148. Cy Moehl-avatar

    Cy Moehl

I can't believe the lack of quality from Denon in this app. Won't find the receiver and the "Cannot find my AVR" page can't even supply a list of models in the required dropdown field so good luck getting help that way. And heaven forbid you don't actively kill the app... If you don't, it'll drain your battery at an astonishing rate.
