requires following permissions on your android device.

approximate location (network-based)
Allows the app to get your approximate location. This location is derived by location services using network location sources such as cell towers and Wi-Fi. These location services must be turned on and available to your device for the app to use them. Apps may use this to determine approximately where you are.

precise location (GPS and network-based)
Allows the app to get your precise location using the Global Positioning System (GPS) or network location sources such as cell towers and Wi-Fi. These location services must be turned on and available to your device for the app to use them. Apps may use this to determine where you are, and may consume additional battery power.

view network connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.

view Wi-Fi connections
Allows the app to view information about Wi-Fi networking, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and name of connected Wi-Fi devices.

create accounts and set passwords
Allows the app to use the account authenticator capabilities of the AccountManager, including creating accounts and getting and setting their passwords.

pair with Bluetooth devices
Allows the app to view the configuration of the Bluetooth on the phone, and to make and accept connections with paired devices.

access Bluetooth settings
Allows the app to configure the local Bluetooth phone, and to discover and pair with remote devices.

directly call phone numbers
Allows the app to call phone numbers without your intervention. This may result in unexpected charges or calls. Note that this doesn't allow the app to call emergency numbers. Malicious apps may cost you money by making calls without your confirmation.

take pictures and videos
Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation.

change network connectivity
Allows the app to change the state of network connectivity.

allow Wi-Fi Multicast reception
Allows the app to receive packets sent to all devices on a Wi-Fi network using multicast addresses, not just your phone. It uses more power than the non-multicast mode.

Allows the app to connect to and disconnect from Wi-Fi access points and to make changes to device configuration for Wi-Fi networks.

Allows access to the list of accounts in the Accounts Service.

find accounts on the device
Allows the app to get the list of accounts known by the phone. This may include any accounts created by applications you have installed.

full network access
Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet.

change your audio settings
Allows the app to modify global audio settings such as volume and which speaker is used for output.

read your contacts
Allows the app to read data about your contacts stored on your phone, including the frequency with which you've called, emailed, or communicated in other ways with specific individuals. This permission allows apps to save your contact data, and malicious apps may share contact data without your knowledge.

read the contents of your SD card
Allows the app to read the contents of your SD card.

read phone state
Allows read only access to phone state, including the phone number of the device, current cellular network information, the status of any ongoing calls, and a list of any PhoneAccounts registered on the device.

Allows the app to read SMS messages stored on your phone or SIM card. This allows the app to read all SMS messages, regardless of content or confidentiality.

run at startup
Allows the app to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the phone and allow the app to slow down the overall phone by always running.

receive text messages (MMS)
Allows the app to receive and process MMS messages. This means the app could monitor or delete messages sent to your device without showing them to you.

receive text messages (SMS)
Allows the app to receive and process SMS messages. This means the app could monitor or delete messages sent to your device without showing them to you.

record audio

Later - much better than before (below). More intuitive, less prone to hop away searching at the first or second letter. I find myself using the app almost daily on my phone, occasionally even at home where most of my Echo devices live. The user interface is still a little off-kilter for me - I frequently find myself sending music to the wrong device because that choice doesn't come up first (I have quite a few Echo devices). But other than that, it's excellent.

  2. guest-avatar

Good app once you learn your way around it and get to know certain tricks. I'd recommend you google Alexa tips and tricks and read a few articles to gain confidence and speed in using this app. I have the Echo Dot and a few smart plugs and TVs in my house that I've automated using Alexa. The Routines option is especially nice! What I like the most is that it works well with Apple Music. It's a little slow to respond at times though and that's why the 4-star rating.

Android is difficult to make compatible. I'm experienced in Android OS and general phone technology. Either it's not working, not taking me through the correct steps, or the "Help/Troubleshooting" process is flawed. Very useful and convenient for certain things. Very frustrating for others. Great app, but needs some work for the layman.

  4. guest-avatar

Not very useful. Music selections are a joke. When using Amazon Music - titles show as 'Unknown' on Recently Played list. If using Spotify, the play/stop bar at bottom doesn't show up so can't pause music if you are interrupted or want to take a telephone call. Volume controls and EQ settings are whimsical at best - good luck getting them to work and then to get the EQ settings to stay fixed. Other times Alexa just decides to go on strike and simply won't respond - unplug it. An expensive toy.

At times it does not do what I want but only sometimes. I love this app. I can control my sons alarm from the comforts of my own room. We have yet to try all the games. Wish they had more free music choices. My son loves music but cannot listen to his favorite songs unless I pay and I do not have the money to. My dogs go crazy when we say "Alexa play a kitty noise." So funny to watch their reaction. Please send us a coupon for a newer version of Alexa mine was stolen. Email me please Amazon.

  6. guest-avatar

Never consistent. Had light named shade. Had same name for year, suddenly Alexa cannot recognize. This type of example happens all the time. Will work fine then will not recognize a light or routine after couple months. Frustrating because what is the point of buying alexa products when they don't work half the time. All the 4 and 5 star reviews are most likely from new users. Love to see their rating after year of use.

Works well for tons of daily activities, shopping lists, reminders, alarms, in house intercom and phone calls. As well as turning devices on and off. Only limited by your own creativity. Update 3/20/20 Continued improvements have helped to make adding more devices faster and easier. Our initial set-up had 5 devices online. Our new networks daily average is 23 to 25 at any one time. So the ability to manage devices across platforms is valuable

  8. guest-avatar

I would give the app 5 stars if the developers had not tried to tweak it. When I first started to use the app in Dec. last year it worked really well, displaying a track list of the album playing. Then came an update. The track list would still show but only for a few seconds, after which it disappeared leaving a blank screen. I complained about this to Amazon and have been told it is being investigated. I eagerly awaited the next update. This has just been issued but has not changed the fault.

  9. guest-avatar

Very useful App. Turn on lights before i get home.i can walk through the house and tell her to turn on lights per room. Its makes life a little easier. Its like having a personal assistant with you. Set a timer, start a grocery list, ask her to check the weather... endless possibilities. I wish Amazon would put a feature to change her accent!

  10. guest-avatar

It works when it wants to. Sometimes it doesn't even pick up the Bluetooth plugs. It did it once and never again. The drop in feature stopped working. All it does is just load and load forever. Fix this. It used to be helpful. What happened? I can't even drop in using my echo buds. What a joke.

  11. guest-avatar

I like the Alexa app. It's relatively easy to use. It was a little frustrating to use until I got used to it over time. Now, I can navigate through the app with ease and do what I need quickly. I assume it's easier to use now because of added features, updates, and continual improvement of the app. I am, however, still not totally satisfied with Alexa's ability to comprehend the commands and questions I ask it (or her). If anything, I believe that comprehension is the area that needs improvemen.

  12. guest-avatar

The app is responsive and fun. My only gripe is with one of my pieces of hardware. I was so pleased with my first one, that I wanted to add a second one. I saw the option to buy a refurbished one exactly like my first generation echo device, and trusting Amazon, I went ahead and bought it. the only trouble is it won't stay connected to the internet no matter where I place it . Amazon refused even after several failed attempts with customer service to replace. So I just lose. Bezos owes me one!!!

  13. guest-avatar

Buggy and lethargic I'm a huge fan of Alexa devices, owning 8 different devices. Overall, the benefits of the interconnectivity of all compatible devices is great, but it requires the Alexa app to make it all come together. And this app takes forever to load! After opening, it seems to take a full 60 seconds or more to load everything (presumably in the background) in order to be fully functional. It really sucks

  14. guest-avatar

Alexa right on your phone need I say more. I love it. I left my Keys in my car and I had to use my front door long story but nobody could hear me knocking or ringing the doorbell so I hopped on my phone used my app to talk to my Alexa speaker in the house and it worked somebody came to my rescue and open the door.. awesome Set announcements set reminders. Right from your phone instead of talking to a speaker

  15. guest-avatar

Always lags and sometimes freezes. The Alexa experience is enjoyable but the app does not add anything for me as it lags too much on my phone. Also the speech recognition language is not configurable, my phone is in English and I'm French, I have no other choice than change my whole config language to allow Alexa to understand me.
