App ChangeLog

  • The 1986 class of the Navy's elite flight school, Top Gun, is known for producing skilled fighter pilots like Maverick and Iceman. But there was another famous graduate that year: Lawrence van der Pimple, who left the Navy with full honors and a couple of Purple Hearts. Rather than become a commercial pilot, he traded in his flight wings to became the first American to ride a Segway cross-country. While that story isn't entirely factual, this app update will in fact fix a couple nasty bugs.

  1. Felisha Bredek-avatar

Haven't used it yet... not many stuff listed... but; there's enough to keep a little busy on a road trip. Just wish everything would pop up. Like restaurants, activities, tourist traps etc. All at the same time. Instead of clicking separately. Otherwise cool!

  2. Don Keller-avatar

Works so well. Easy to build/modify/model trips. I find it better than my Garmin to plan trips. Negative: it is just about impossible to read the mileage and distance between stops in the list mode due to a super light grey color- and I see no reason why to make it so light- Styling?

  3. jeff zorn-avatar

Been using this app for years, it has taken me to some really cool sites. Missile silos, a huge treehouse, big empty pits in the middle of nowhere. Great info, cool offbeat spots.

  4. Weston Pruneda-avatar

I used to live this app. I've used it for many years to track and plan trips but I'm not paying $30 to use it properly. I'm sure there's another app to replace it. I'll lose a lot of trip I had saved but not worth it

  5. Chris C-avatar

I really like the ability to plan and save trips on a desktop and be able to pull them up on your mobile device. Where the program really fails is trying to use the app on a tablet. Between the search bars, icons, and other useless or obtrusive info on the screen, starting with vertical inches on a tablet screen, you are left with a narrow 1.5" band across the screen for the map itself. Also, it seemed to be so busy trying to load ads in the background that it was difficult to scroll the map. There appears to be a beta feature for turn-by-turn navigation but I couldn't get it to work correctly.

  6. Aaron Dashiell-avatar

Great concept and interface, but missing a lot of attractions and free version is very limited. Membership is WAY too expensive

Plus seems to be the way to go, pay for it. If its long road trips or new places close by this app seems to have what you need.

No route options, doesn't have option to plan stops for gas. **You can find gas stops, but only if you type gas into the search bar. There is not an icon for it like there is for everything else. Then, when you DO search for fueling stops, you get your gas stations as well as a bunch of restaurants and grocery stores that DON'T HAVE GAS STATIONS. This app did NOT make planning my trip ANY easier than google maps did. Useless waste of space on my phone! Removed app

  9. Sal Jacquez-avatar

Have used this app for a few years. Enjoy it as a useful tool to find activities/attractions. Really like it. Recently found out that if i share a trip with someone, if i am logged into my account when they open the shared link, they have complete access to my profile and my other saved trips. They can modify/delete my personal info. and trips. This does not occur if i am logged out. Major privacy issue.

  10. Eusevio Matias-avatar

Seems useful. Unfortunately, everything keeps resetting when I spend any extended period of time on the time or close it. I have to sign in again everytime I open the app. My trips don't save. I cant add another stop to my trips. I regret spending money on this app. Hopefully the technical issues are sorted out.

  11. Ben Parker-avatar

Clunky, round trips don't work, can't add more than a few stops without paying 30 bucks.

  12. Michael Czarny-avatar

Meh - Register in but did not buy the full $30 / yr app. The " introductory app only allows for 5 way points. Did not read my home setting correctly, difficult to reroute. Save your money and stay with Google maps until they have the ability to save your personal route. I still find I'm using the Microsoft streets and tips (dated)

  13. Jack Nissen-avatar

completley useless app. I wanted to use it for an actual roadtrip but it only shows you ONE route? what If I want to avoid tolls? not cross the border? both things I actually needed and it forces you to choose only 1 route. cant take any other routes. ridiculous and useless. google maps can do what this app does and more.

  14. Kelly Downey-avatar

Horrible app. The directions are confusing and change if close the app and reopen. Takes you through small towns with lots of stop lights. Also I am not able to search for gas stations while using the app.

  15. Jill B-avatar

It came in very handy on our road trip! I would have preferred route options to choose alternate routes, but as for searching nearby and finding anything along the route it was awesome!

  16. Melanie D-avatar

We are using Roadtrippers plus while we are planning a 6500 mile road trip. Its really helpful for planning the sequence of stops. Not all of our hotels or stops are default choices but we can enter the address, date of stay, hours open, and any other notes.

  17. Will Parsons-avatar

It doesnt seem to plan the most efficiant trip by default. But i love being able to see all the possible stops along the way!

  18. Tra F-avatar

Best roadtripping app going. Tons of unique and interesting stops most travel sites ignore.

  19. East weast-avatar

I am amazed by this app it was so hard to find an app that actually shows most of the good places to go in an area, this is gonna be so helpful on my move across the country I can't believe it's not rated higher, definitely recommend

We use this app to plan amazing road trips! We have had such fun exploring new places.

  29. Chad Holz-avatar

Love this app for planning our road trips. Well worth the $30, keep up the good work! Only thing I'd like to see is RV safe navigation based on height, width, and weight. Other apps cater towards Class A RV resort types. It's a shame for people to down rate this because they just want it free...

Does what I need. I would recommend it. I really like its map functionality, search capabilities, the waypoint details layout, waypoint user reviews. I haven't found another app yet that does this well. I need a way to change waypoint numbers while on the map. The reroute function is a joke, had to update manually. There is no budgeting setup, would be great to add a cost to a waypoint. There is no duration for a waypoint only a set day. Need a better way to set lodging # of nights.

  31. James Molloy-avatar

Missing Hotels.. Long road trip and I had to add just the addresses for 3 of the 7 hotels because they would not show up, but show up instantly on google maps.. sorry I paid for the premium version:(

We used this app for our trip from Missouri to Myrtle Beach. It was perfect as it was our first family road trip. I spent a few months planning adding some stops here and there we seem some amazing things and some strange things. Read reviews on the places and add your pictures and reviews it will help others. We will definitely be using the app again for our next trip!

  33. S.G. Robinson-avatar

Bait and switch. None of the features on this app are free. None. Not even a map.

  34. Ellie Ogden-avatar

Terrible. It gives limited options. It's difficult to navigate effectively. It does not let me map out information the way I want to. I even paid for the subscription in the hope that it would be more functional, but this app is useless.

  35. Colin Engstrom-avatar

I used to love this app. Made some great trips using it. But... Now you are required to pay $23 a year to plan more then 6 stops also it is now quite hard to save trips for later.

Very poor. Reset password link doesnt even direct you to change. Very poor design.

  37. Mark Dullanty-avatar

Moving with kids this is amazing, scratch that I'm not paying $30 for this app A one month subscription or a three month subscription would make a lot more sense.

  38. PJ Finster-avatar

Extremely overpriced for what it does. Should be $5, not 30. UI needs a lot of polishing.

  39. Becky Unknown-avatar

This app won't even let me start an account, it says invalid username, password or email. How do I know what is invalid? Too many variables to keep trying

  40. Ye Aung Kyaw-avatar

Sucks i want to add more than one destination or to go to destination one way and take another way home.

  44. Jason Kramer-avatar

Good app to plan a trip worth the yearly fee to get unlimited. Best road trip app I have found. Do all my vacations by car.

  45. Katie Murphy-avatar

  50. Donald Coello-avatar

Very helpful with info on destination I didn't know of . Thanks for the help

  51. TKP-avatar

I'm not going to give this one star because I was so frustrated using it I uninstalled after 15 minutes. There are 4-5 possible routes on the simple ~300km trip I put in, not only did this pick the worst possible route, it didn't give the option to pick an alternate route. When I added another stop to do this manually, it completely ignored it. On top of that there was an illegal turn right off the bat at the end of my street, so I can't imagine how many more there would have been. $30 a year?

  52. Jill Moser-avatar

So far I love it! Great idea for an app

  53. Tim Holmes-avatar

It's a cool idea, but it's frustrating. I tell it what I'm interested in along my route which is historic stuff. It still shows me hotels even though I didn't select them they overpopulate the map. Even more frustrating is that it won't let me click places of interest. When I try it shows it for a second then jumps to another one that I didn't select. I can't view the ones I want.

  54. Chealsy Lowery-avatar

I used this app a few years ago to plan my trip to Vegas. I intended to use it again only to discover it's $29.95 if I want to add more than a handful of stops. Seriously? Maybe add a per trip cost or a monthly cost but, $30 to plan a single trip 🙄 I immediately uninstalled it. They seriously need to rethink their charges. Most people don't need a years subscription. The average person takes one trip per year. Someone in their company seriously misjudged their client base.

I'm a veteran road warrior and i love this app! Its great for getting ideas for our family roadtrips. I love that i can choose what kind of attractions or accommodations to search for along my route. The only downside is that the app seems to freeze up frequently. Closing and reopening it always corrects the issue.... but thats kind of annoying

  57. Aszha Ayers-avatar

Horrible app! They'll lock you in for $7.95/month for a lifetime! Automatically renews and you can't delete your account yourself! You have to contact them! Yet you can only email them no phone contact! Worse app i ever downloaded!

  58. Rachel Smith-avatar

While this app has always been buggy and prone to crashing, it was an easy way to edit and plan any upcoming trips. Now they have limited the number of points you can save to something ridiculously few, it's not worth the time and effort to use. There are better, and freer apps available.

Just purchased the app for 29.99/year Before tax. So i figured wow this must be a decent app for that price(or it should be). Right now I would like a refund due to the main reason I am going to use this app is to plan my road trip at the beginning of February. My issues are that when I'm clicking on the map view on interesting places it doesn't actually select the place I want. It jumps around all over the screen and I can't seem to find a solution. I've emailed support for now we will see.

  60. Farm Lenses-avatar

I enabled GPS, entered Tucson as a destination, and Roadtrippers gave me a picture of the US with a fat line between the Bay Area and Tucson. I hit Guides to see if there were more insights, and they offered guides for playing tourist in Big Sur, which isn't along the way. The "Tutorial" is 5 screen shots. How'd it get more than 1 star?

  61. Jesse Friedman-avatar

Lots of ads, no helpful suggestions of places to see, no more helpful than a map, and it sends emails DAILY

  62. belinda Pratt-avatar

It used to be a really cool website. It was easy, fun, and free. I find the app difficult to use compared to how the site USED to be. The link to change your password doesn't even take you to reset it, it just goes back to home page.

Its not really a planner for roadtrips. It more of if you are on a trip at this moment you can find things a long the route. Which google maps already does. I would be nice if you could plan a road trip in advance and safe your hotel stays and gas stations and food and historical stops. Could be better.

  64. Melissa Wells-avatar

Not very user friendly, can't figure out how to zoom out. All it does is move the user icon around then tells me to zoom out. It also doesn't show me anything to do in the area. I lived in the greater Seattle area and it never showed the 'Twin Peaks' trip but it pops up as 'local' now that I am in central Oregon......don't know about you but I don't consider that local. Waste of space on my phone. Pity because I was looking forward to utilizing this app for our RV road trip across the U.S.

  65. A Google user-avatar

I used to love, love, love this app! I planned our move to Alaska weeks ago. It was awesome! Now we found out we need to greatly alter our route. I started a new trip to duplicate stuff we could still do, leave out stuff on the part we couldn't, and add new things and found out they got greedy recently and I can only add 5 things. Soooo mad!!! We are not going to travel again for the next 3 years so I refuse to pay 30 bucks for a year of plus for ONE trip!!! 😡😡😡

  66. Mik Scheper-avatar

I hate the way you can't context shift between this and other apps—if you need to go to another app to look up a date or name, you have to start all over again. You also can't modify planned trips easily, and the search results are mediocre—I'm usually looking for hiking trails along road trips, and many results don't actually have hiking trails, and half the time that's only apparent when you get there. I hope this app and site improve eventually, or that something better comes along.

  67. Joe LaRosa-avatar

The app itself is great, but they reduced the number of supported waypoints to 5 unless you want to pay them $30/yr for a "plus" subscription. The rest of the value-added features of "plus" look decent, but for those of us who only wanted to map out waypoints while planning an itinerary there isn't much reason to spend $30/yr on this when you can get most of the way there for free using the "your places" function on Google Maps. I would have been more inclined to purchase the "plus" subscription if the waypoint limit hadn't been put in place.

  68. Sarah Maxwell-avatar

This is the only app I found that helps you map your road trip and then lets you zoom in along the route and check out hotels, restaurants, attractions, scenery, etc., to add to your trip. Unfortunately, you have to pay to add more than 7 stops. I would have totally paid the $ for the year if I went on more road trips. But I will only be using it for my one epic road trip this summer! Highly recommend this app.

  69. Jennifer Gerde-avatar

I used this app many times in the past and loved it. Now I'm deleting it because of having to pay for more than 5 waypoints! If it was 2.99 sure, I'd buy. But 29.99? Nope.

i have loved this app for years. now i am about to travel across country for 4 days and just putting in the hotels and restaurants per day is more than 7 stops. I was trying to change my hotel on an existing trip & it wouldn't let me because it's over the 7. i may use it as a guide, but I don't have $30 to shell out on yet another app's "premium" version. so it looks like I'll use it to check for cool places to visit, but not much more. So disappointing. Not sure i can recommend it from now on.

  71. A Google user-avatar

Sadly--This used to be a decent route planning app because you could add endless way points (unlike Google maps). It mostly just needed better location recognition in the search feature. So I held onto it for years waiting for better updates. Now it's so packed full of everything other than route planning tools, laggy and crashing, and generally non functional, I don't find it usable any longer. Maybe I'll load up the 2017 version...

  72. John White-avatar

This app would've been a 5 if not for all the changes made. They updated a couple weeks ago which caused the app to crash numerous times. Saw there was an update thought great they will have that fixed only to find a new even bigger issue. The free version now only allows for 5 stops between destinations used to be 35. So they want you to pay for a yearly subscription which doesn't offer enough in my opinion. At this point why offer a free version there isn't enough differentiation.

  73. Diana Mian-avatar

Glad I got it. Using it to see sights around Monterey. Love that it gives me the options to choose what we want to see. Thank you Roadtrippers for this great app😎. We are on retirement and got to see so many things that were free.

  74. Simon Testoni-avatar

This was my most favourite and loved app for my holidays. I've spent hours in here creating holidays, researching places and shared these trips amongst friends for them to view. The decision to charge $30 per year to access the previous features is a shock and I'm actually really annoyed by it. $30 for lifetime maybe, but definitely not per year. I'll patiently wait for a competitor to provide value and in the mean time I'll use Google maps. Sorry guys.

  75. LaKesha Raynor-avatar

This is the best app I have found now that my husband and I are really able to travel. We have went on several road trips using the app and I literally wouldn't go on one without it. We recently invited someone to go on a trip with us and it was great to be able to share the itinerary with him. The only thing feature I would like to see added is how to add a destination that's not in their map database like off the beaten path, mom and pop restaurants and locations.

  76. A Google user-avatar

I USE to love this app, one of my favorites! now with the new update you can only add five destinations, add if you think you can delete one and add a different dont be fooled. if you used it you loose it. this app is now useless unless your willing to spend $30 a YEAR! I could understand paying for this app because it's very useful, but never for that price! maybe a one time rate of $20. very disappointed!

  77. A Google user-avatar

I used to love this app, it let you actually plan out roadtrips when Google Maps limited you to 10 destinations. Now they updated it and you can only put six stops in unless you pay $30 a year. No thank you, not interested in spending more money to do something you used to let us do for free. MAYBE I would pay $2 or $3 for the app if it was ad free and let me put in as many stops as I wanted and download for offline use, and gave me full access through a web browser also, but I'm not subscribing for $30/year for it.

This app has been KEY in helping me plan my 3 month road trip around the west coast. I dont know how I would have done it without this app. It has all sorts of features that let you add notes to your destinations, explore recommended areas in every state, and easy planning. It even calculates gas costs and miles travelled! My only problem with it has been that it tends to lag quite a bit and the software sometimes re-arranges some of your destinations. Hasnt bothered me too much however!

Been having some problem with the app crashing lately but have used it in the past and love it when it works !! Will hang around and hope the developers fix the issue

I like how I can see what along the way to save for the future trip coming up soon.

I've really enjoyed this app but will not be using it after the switch to limiting your waypoints on the free version. The fee is too high for me to reasonably pay for an app so I'll find other alternatives. 2 stars because prior to the update making it undesirable it was great for finding cool places to stop at, though the locations were at times incorrect or not updated.

I've been using this app off and on for a few months to plan a major road trip this summer. I re-downloaded it and discovered the new stop limit on the free account. While I can certainly understand limiting some features seven is so small as to be useless. I can still access the trip I was working on as it currently is but I will be recreating it somewhere else

Nothing different than any other low quality planner. It wants to dictate the route to your destination instead allowing you to choose your route and providing pertinent information for that route. To test, I entered Grand Island Nebraska to Denver Colorado and came up with the I-80 route only. I had a desired route to be either US 34 or US 36. I also want to be able to plan routes based on speed limits as I don't always want to drive 75-80 MPH, I want to be able plan a route on slower routes.

Used to love this site/app but I no longer use it since they added the Plus upgrade. I understand they need to generate revenue in order to maintain their site but I think they removed too many features from the free version. There's still ads on the site so they are making money that way, too. Personally I'm fine going back to Google maps for planning trips.

I used this app for a roadtrip last year and I loved it. I used other resources to look into places to go as well, but I logged it all on third app to keep track of everything. I'd started to plan this year's trip before the payment option started. Now this app is nearly useless to me. I'd be happy to pay a smaller amount because it is a useful concept. But $30 seems like a bit much... it's not like it actually plans the trip for you.

We used Roadtrippers for a 17-day Roadtrip last summer, and we were so amazed at how helpful it was. We found great restaurants, quirky places to visit, and some life changing activities on the app. I would give it 5 stars, but some of the info was a bit outdated (but it gave us info to search on our own) and I'm a bit bummed that the free option doesn't give as much (but I completely understand.) All that being said, I love this program /app and will continue to use it and brag about it!

This was a fantastic free app that worked well and was a real help on a trip to Australia. HOWEVER the cash grab that has been introduced is ridiculous. 29.99 a year for a service that used to be free and ad funded. Free users now limited to a very limited 7 stops compleatly destroys the app in an attempt to force them to buy plus. Real shame and I will stop using this service until this is removed.

From good to terrible. Constant fatal crashes (12 today on latest update); hangs indefinitely when adding or deleting waypoints; half the time won't load waypoint icons on the map, so you have no idea what you're looking at; used to add new waypoints in the most logical and expedient order based on your trip, now just shoves new waypoints at the start of the trip so you have to manually work out the order. This used to be a decent app and the desktop version is great. Please fix it.

Great option for planning out trips.

it saddens me to only give this app 2 Stars. we have been using this app in planning a 3 week long trip for our family of 7 for nearly a year. we have had to change our plans and when I go into the app I can no longer update things the way I need to they have changed it to only have seven stops. this was a great app that I would have given 5 Stars to if not for this change. I will be looking for an app that is not going to take advantage of its customers.

Changed their model and now they charge! I have been using roadtrippers for over 6 years and have been a huge fan. Today, I was planning my forst trip in the last year only to discover what was once free is now a whopping $30 /year!

Literally everything you need all in one. You can set your destinations and see the route and what other stops you'd like to make along the way or discover a new place you'd like to see. Shows hotels and food and attractions with reviews and photos. Shows distance approx. cost of gas based on your cars mileage. Only thing that I would change is being able to change roads easier to avoid say a closure or adjust to a differ t route without adding a new destination to guide you there. But it's easy enough to work around as is. Great app!

I feel a little sad giving this a 2 star rating cause it really isnt a bad app, but after this recent change where they put a limit on waypoints I'm inclined to think differently. I mean, how is $30 a year reasonable by anyones standard? This app has taken me through many great roadtrips BEFORE the new update. Unfotuantely, i will now only be using it for research purposes and I'll be looking into a different road trip app.

Better than Google Trips because it does routing between destinations. But very expensive. And when you get into the sightseeing info in Europe, it is REALLY lacking. I almost paid for the darn thing, but fortunately discovered how little city info was available. Back to Google Trips. Would love to find a good planning and routing app, but so far each has major failings.

Great amount of features. I've used numerous apps to plan our RV trips, but this is the most detailed yet, allowing you to plan days out, as well as search for very specific interests. The only two things preventing a 5-star review are some bugs (URL links for places lock up the app), and not being able to set days/ rest periods like an itinerary or calendar. Solid app overall.

When I downloaded the app I could put in about 60 locations and although it wasn't perfect it was pretty good. I'm planning a 2yr trip and 150 places isn't remotely going to cover it, even if I were willing to pay $29 each year just so I can plan a trip for three years away. That's $150 spent on this app, and I'd still have to have multiple trips so that I can put in 3000+ waypoints. Other than that, it quite often doesn't have half the places I want to go to. Good app otherwise.

Use to be a pretty decent app. It at times could be finicky about things when used on a cell phone. But I traveled to 15 states and saw lots of great things because of it. Now I am planning a new trip and it wants to charge me for more than 7 stops. It's hard to browse options and plan if you can only put in 7. I will not be buying the full version. Disappointing 😔

So far impossible. Not an intuitive app at all. It has potential. It should be simple to change your route from one highway to another, but it was virtually impossible on either the iPad or on an Android phone. I only managed to reroute it to the desired Highway by making a stop sort of near the intersections of those highways and even then it was taking me off on these weird little curved routes that actually added more miles than I wanted. Come on you got to do better than this.

Used many years ago and seems like very little improvements. Was looking forward to an update. Unfortunately multiple inaccuracies from known locations. Unsure were they are pulling data from, but have multiple issues with in accurate locations on map. Very limited trip planning for what the asking price is. No time based fields, can't update descriptions when manual add. Unable to enter GPS coordinates. Gives suggested search in other countries not along route. Will be requesting refund.

What a frustrating experience this app is. forgot your password? We'll email you a link that just opens the mobile app to some random spot. No prompt to reset. Its slow and painful. It feels like mobile is an afterthought. There are two options to sign in through an app.1) Facebook - yuck. And 2) Togo ID - dont worry no one has ever heard of it, you arent alone.
