Perenjak adalah nama segolongan burung kecil yang lincah dan banyak berkicau. Dahulu, kelompok burung ini dimasukkan ke dalam satu suku (familia) yakni Sylviidae, namun belakangan ini --menurut taksonomi Sibley-Ahlquist yang berdasarkan analisis DNA-- suku tersebut dipecah kekerabatannya menjadi Sylviidae (part) dan Cisticolidae.

Perenjak disebut dengan nama-nama umum di pelbagai daerah, seperti prenjak (Jawa), ciblek (Jawa), cinenen (Sunda), cici atau kecici (Betawi), murai (Melayu), dan lain-lain.

Burung ini umumnya berukuran kecil, ramping dan berekor panjang. Panjang tubuh, diukur dari ujung paruh hingga ujung ekor, kebanyakan antara 10-15 cm; meski ada pula yang lebih dari 25 cm. Kebanyakan berwarna kekuningan, hijau zaitun, atau kecoklatan di punggung, dengan warna keputihan atau kekuningan di perut.

Bersuara nyaring dan resik, perenjak seringkali berbunyi tiba-tiba dan berisik. Beberapa jenis berbunyi keras untuk menandai kehadirannya, sambil bertengger pada ujung tonggak, ujung ranting, tiang, kawat listrik atau tempat-tempat menonjol lainnya.
