San Juan de la Cruz(Fontiveros, Ávila, España, 1542 - 1591), fue un religioso y poeta místico. Fue reformador de la Orden de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo y cofundador de la Orden de los Carmelitas Descalzos con santa Teresa de Jesús.

Junto con santa Teresa de Jesús, se considera a san Juan de la Cruz la cumbre de la mística cristiana. Poetas de extracción diversa como Rubén Darío, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Paul Valéry y T. S. Eliot consideraron los poemas de Juan de la Cruz no solo como la cumbre de la mística española, sino de la poesía en esta lengua. El proceso de canonización se inició en 1627 y finalizó en 1630. El 24 de agosto de 1926, Pío XI lo proclama Doctor de la Iglesia Universal.

San Juan de la Cruz ofrece una originalidad en el misticismo consistente en el concepto de noche oscura espiritual. Desde los inicios la vida retirada eremítica, los buscadores renunciaban a los bienes y placeres mundanos sometiéndose a ayunos y asperezas, con el objeto de vaciar sus deseos del mundo y llenarlo de bienes más elevados. San Juan de la Cruz aclara que esta es solamente la primera etapa, ya que tras ella viene la citada noche espiritual, en que el buscador, ya desapegado de los consuelos y placeres mundanos, perderá también el apoyo de su paz, de sus suavidades interiores, entrando en la más "espantable" noche a la que sí sigue la perfecta contemplación.
