Learn about hyenas through hearing their unique vocal expressions today! Spotted hyenas are well known for their strange vocalizations, which sound much like the hee-hee sound of human laughter! With these sound clips you'll hear the characteristic hyena giggle as well as other hyena vocalizations used to communicate with fellow clan members. While hyenas tend to appear more like wild dogs, these animals are actually part of the feline family. These distant cat-cousins can be fierce hunters or scavengers on the African savanna. While you may think that any animal that laughs would be good-natured and social, think again! Hyenas don't tend to be very friendly creatures and their laugh is not a sign of joy or amusement like human laughter. Hyenas actually laugh when they are distressed, such as when they are being chased. Adults and kids alike can learn about hyena communication with these high quality sounds!
