The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) as the national public health institute publishes the Corona-Warn-App on behalf of the German Federal Government for Germany. The app serves as a digital complement to distancing, hygiene and wearing masks. It uses Bluetooth technology and the Apple/Google Exposure Notification APIs. The app is designed to help break infection chains by informing you if you were recently close to someone who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. However, at no time does it collect any personal information. Who you are and where you are remain secret - and your privacy is well-protected.

Whenever you leave the house, activate the exposure logging feature - it is the heart of the App. When enabled, smartphones exchange encrypted random IDs with other devices using Bluetooth.

The random IDs only provide information about the duration and distance of an encounter. No one is able to identify the person behind these IDs. The Corona-Warn-App does not collect any information about the location of the encounter or that of its users.

Based on maximum coronavirus incubation times, the random IDs your device collects are stored in an exposure log for 14 days and then deleted. If a person is diagnosed with COVID-19 and chooses to share his/her own device’s random IDs, all persons previously encountered will then be notified anonymously.

No one will know when, where or with whom the exposure event took place. The infected person remains anonymous.

In addition to the exposure notifications, affected users will receive clear recommendations for action. Important: Information about the notified persons is not accessible at any time.

The Corona-Warn-App is designed to be your daily companion, without knowing your identity. Data protection is 100%-guaranteed throughout the app’s entire service life and for all functions.

• No registration: No email address and no name need to be submitted.
• No conclusions about identities: When you meet another person using the app, your smartphones only exchange random IDs.
• Decentralized storage: Data is stored only on the smartphone itself and deleted after 14 days.
• No third-party access: Neither the person reporting a proven COVID-19 infection, nor those who have been notified can be traced – not by the Federal Government, the Robert Koch Institute, any other user, nor by Google.

This app is not intended for any use outside of Germany. Corona-Warn-App is the main COVID-19 app for Germany, where it is interconnected with the national health care system. Despite of the above, Corona-Warn-App is also available in this country. It is provided for anyone living, working, vacationing, or visiting Germany regularly or for an extended period of time.

The Corona-Warn-App's Terms of Use apply: By installing and using the app, you agree to the Terms of Use.

Now for the second time the app reports an error everytime I try to open it and stops running. First time only way to solve it was a full re-install. (Had waited out, for Google updates if they would solve the issue, but didn't) All data was lost. Just 3 weeks later, it happens again. Makes the App pretty much useless. I was happy to support the cause (despite the to low adoption rate) but if it doesn't even work, why should I bother installing it a third time?

  2. Clemens Poser-avatar

It seems to work, but I have yet to get a single notification. I just checked in after 2 weeks and it tells me that I was exposed to covid 8 days ago. Where was the push notification?? Edit, in response the RKIs response: I apparently have "increased risk" because I have been exposed. And I did not get a push notification. I stumbled upon it while randomly checking in.

I logged my second Covid-Test, and then I decided to enter my first one to see how it worked (because I did not use the app the first time) so when I tried to take a look again to the second Covid-Test to see my results... Now it is impossible because it mentions that "the code has already been used" and I cannot log in. I called to service and they mentioned that now I need to wait only doctor's results... So bad. I need urgently the result, and not until the doctor's availability

  4. Murat Mazlumoglu-avatar

I had registered a test in the app. We were told the result will be available in the app as soon as the result is known. And this would be the fastest I can learn. It has been 6 days and still it shows 'my test result is not available'. After calling out we learnt that my test was negative and was known since about 2 days. Because of this all family was at home in quarantine the whole week. Kids couldn't go to school at all. So who would take any responsibility for all those inconveniences?

Sadly I am experiencing an error which makes the app unuseable for me: "CAUSE: 3 something went wrong" It says that the app is working fine, however the app cannot update the risk status. A number (maybe error number) is shown: (39508). I can click on details, which will show me some further information or bug reporting, but wont help me. Please contact if you need more info, I would like to help solving this problem to be able use the app properly. Thx! Edit: Thx for the quick reply!:)

A very good idea that is very poorly executed. It has been 5 days since I found out about my negative test results from a phone call. The app still says that my test results aren't ready. No wonder the infections of Covid-19 are on the rise when the ones responsible for informing people about the results aren't taking this seriously. Imagine how many people went out of quarantine whilst waiting for the in app results that were positive and infected other people.

  7. Silvia Schrötter-avatar

It often says the tracking is not working, although all settings are as told. I got tested for covid and after not having any feedback on the app I called the doctor who told me it was negative. The app still says no results available yet, I got the results from my doctor a week ago!

  8. Xavi Ros-avatar

    Xavi Ros

I recently got a message saying that I had had a low risk encounter. I personally find this information should not even be displayed. At the end of the day if risk is low and I am not supposed to do anything it only increases panic at least for some users. Agree on the battery consumption. Specially when I was on holidays.

  9. Alex Smith-avatar

App worked well for a few weeks, but I just noticed it hadn't been logging my contact data for the last 2 weeks. When I opened the app it immediately crashed. Had to reinstall as no other fix seemed to solve constant and immediate crashes, but contact history is now gone.

  10. Rahul-avatar

Terrible app! After my test 24 hour later I scan the QR code and the results was not showing. 3 days later the app showing error that, the scan code is invalid. I call you hotline number and they give answer that I have to call Gesundheit Amt and I will get answer from there. I miss my University classes. I don't understand why do they have hotline if answer is not related from app. Application has not so strong UX/UI frames , just basic information and chance for strong exposure.

  11. Matthew Correia-avatar

The app seems fine so far (no real interactions with it yet), but it would be nice if it could also serve (or at least link to) reliable local infection numbers and trends. Currently this information must be sought separately, though it also informs lifestyle decisions.

  12. Andreas-avatar

Well designed app, but causes roughly 10-20% higher battery consumption, which should be considered when planning longer apps. Privacy wise I'm very happy. It's literally the ONLY app that tells you every week, that tracking is active. (-1 star for impact on battery life tho.)

  13. Riccardo Berutti-avatar

Since last couple of weeks I have high battery drain (which shows as Google services which manage the Bluetooth low power) and continuous glitches on the Bluetooth audio. For testing I disabled while at home the exposure logging and both problems disappeared. This is happening only since recently!

Still having problems with the test results section being stuck on "Data being retrieved." Saw this is an existing issue on GitHub, so hope it will be resolved soon. Glad RKI/Germany is using digital contact tracing to help fight COVID-19.

The app is okay. The only suggestions I have are: 1. to make it possible to check in to venues by using the app and 2. to show the symptoms of covid19 (clearly explained) in the app. That's something that the NHS app did better.

  16. Alessandra Velozo-avatar

Useless. I deleted by mistake my test before I could see the results and now the App doesn't let me to use my QR-Code again because "it is used". The number for Tech Support also doesn't work

  21. Tim Borg-avatar

I was interested how such a solid app gets a rating of 3.0 in total. It seems that the reason is it's wide spread, so some userers of old hardware try to use it and find errors and bugs which have been patched already on newer ones. Either this or just Layer 8 problems - So all in all, download, give it the permissions it needs and it does what it's supposed to do, don't worry about it :)

  22. Liam Trimble-avatar

    Liam Trimble

Does what it's supposed to do. More information about when and where the exposure was. At least when and that way I could narrow it down to where I was in order to properly notify friends and family and take other prevention methods. Otherwise a great app and everyone needs to download it. I didn't notice any battery issues..... I guess this is due to having a newer device with upgraded bluetooth, it's almost worth people upgrading devices and this app will save lives.

Usually worked well until early this week. It is now giving me an error and the app is crashing right after opening. Please fix this bug! Edit: no error code is shown. When I click the app tile to open it, the app starts and closes right after (I see the main screen for a fraction of a second).

    Oliver Schoett

The "Data Privacy Information" contains a link to "more information about the exposure logging functionality on Android smartphones" that can neither be clicked nor copied. Hence on a mobile device, one cannot read this information with reasonable effort. After the app is installed, it notifies that to get exposure notifications, one has to "turn on location". I have read elsewhere that this is probably benign. But this should be explained clearly in the app, because it is inconsistent at first sight with the communicated privacy guarantees.

Clean and simple app. The source code is available on GitHub. The app only exchanges random strings for proximal detection, no other data (like location or user IDs) is ever used! The exposure logging feature requires Bluetooth 4.0 and recent Google Play services. These are very reasonable requirements.

You need to give the user the possibility to receive more details on the risk exposure and on the status. For instance in the case of low or high risk, what was the average distance from infected person? What was the duration of contact? What is the risk score? I get it that you want to make it clear and simple for people to use and understand but you also need to give us the opportunity to be informed. High risk and low risk are rather meaningless without a proper measure

I would like to see more options to control notifications. When I get home I usually turn off Bluetooth and GPS and when I go out I turn them on again. Since I have the app, I get two notifications every time I get home reminding me that the app needs them to work. However, at home I don't need the service to run. So please let me disable those notifications while letting me allow warnings about changes in my estimated risk level.

This app is one big step towards (a new) normality. Lightweight, transparent, straightforward. Fake reports are prevented by the need of providing a TAN which is only generated if you have a valid test. I want to clear up two things: • the code for this app is open source on Github. This is as transparent as it can get. • no, Bluetooth is NOT draining your battery. Nor is it exposing your personal data. I encourage everyone to install this app. This is a team effort. And everyone is part of it.

On the surface ok. However keeps crashing, just disappears. Checking the faq I see that if it's installed, there's a background logger that keeps going. No real confidence in this as I can't check it. Also the options I have on the phone don't match the faq, so again not sure if it's working or not. I had to manually set to autostart in phone restart. Not reassuring. So probably OK, but not able to verify Update: Kein Fehlercode. It's running. Then stops in background. Will continue by email

Nice app, very simple and easy to use. The only thing that is in the back of my mind is how many people around me have this app installed. I'm on 6 days showing low risk but have I actually passed one person that also has the app? I just can't see this being fully utilised unfortunately which is a real shame. Update: in response to your comment: Hmm your response doesn't correspond to my review 🤔

I've had this app all of 5 minutes so far and it seems simple and straightforward. Happy with the privacy policy. Not happy that it requires access to my phone's camera (and can't see a reason why!) and while it says in the permissions section that I can deactivate that under settings after , I can't find a way to do that. I don't like any apps accessing my camera and would appreciate advice on deactivating this access. I would like to keep the app, but I won't if I can't deactivate that access.

The terms are written so that everyone can understand them easily, which is reassuring and makes it easier to trust this will not be misused for other purposes. Unfortunately it gives no information on when and where an exposure has taken place. For instance, the app currently tells me I have a low risk, but also 1 exposure. I have no way of knowing how long or short that exposure was in order to react accordingly. Did I talk to this person or just pass them on the street?

After a few days the app stopped working. Several error messages appeared including 'cause: 3' and 'cause: 9002'. Tried to troubleshoot it by checking the google services version, deleting the cache, reinstalling the app etc etc. All in vain. Edit: The old issues were fixed, but since a week it says: 'Exposure logging is not possible', without any further error messages or information ... Edit3: I've a huawei. the faq says that this is a likely cause for all the troubles. Deinstalled the app.

It is a clever and necessary app. Unfortunately, after 14 day of use I've got the "Cause: 3 Something went wrong" message appear on my screen everytime I launch the app. The error reads further "Error when communicating with Google API (10)". I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app and also restarting my phone, but the error continues to appear. What to do?

  50. Melanie Thoma-avatar

Overall does the app is well made, but some things on the user experience: It is confusing to write 13/14 day active. Maybe a total counter of active days would be better? Secondly a counter of exchanged IDs would be very good, that the user would see that it is working properly. Another point is the accessibility. In older phones the app does not work and half of my family is not able to use it, but would like to use it. Maybe there is a backup technology which can be used?

  51. Marzia Neri-avatar

At the beginning it was not updating daily as stated but now it does. It would be great to know on which time span we had a increase risk to follow guidelines at work and to inform people around us. (I don't know if the Information is given) It should be possible to take screenshots of the error messages. They could cover all private data and be captured.

20200710: restarting the mobile helps: i can do ONE update of the list. so, every day a restart is needed to keep the list up-to-date. the day counter is affected by this (?): i am stuck on day 13. -> 3 stars 20200717: still not able to receive the list from the server. app tells me not enough memory free, i have 1gb free.. no fixes in 3weeks now. uninstall

Works great, but... It really should expose some information about what it does. You can't really be sure if it really works and knowing that my device had Bluetooth issues now and then, it would be better to see its working by some statistics or a simple counter (tokens collected). Plus side is that it really doesn't affect battery at all. No difference to before installation.

  54. Carsten Brinkschulte-avatar

    Carsten Brinkschulte

Solid user interface and good explanation of the data privacy concept. Surprisingly well done, I was expecting it to be more cumbersome. Edit: It would be good if we could see how many tokens the app has collected in the last 14 days. This would make the app more attractive to open and raise the confidence in that it actually works. Also interesting metric would be to know how many users have been warned by the app. This has been released to the public (I believe 300 notifications so far). Unfortunately, I cannot find the Android system settings which apparently shows the number of contacts collected. Either its not available easily or I just cant find it. Anyway - I think it would be great if the app could show this information rather than asking the user to search for information in the settings. I think this info is something that most users would like to see as it would give them a sense of protection and contribution to everybody's safety.

The app is generally implemented very well. In my case it stopped working after a few weeks though and I only found out by accident when I opened it and it showed an error message. Multiple updates have been unable to solve the problem and the app continues to display the "risk unknown" status. My suggestion, aside from the obvious fix "Error when communicating with Google API(10)", would be to show a notification or such if the status remains at unknown for multiple days.

I like the app, but I understand how it works. Reading through the comments I believe this app really needs a metric that shows to the user that the app really works. For example it could display the number of tokens it collected in real time. This way people can at least see wether the app works when they meet friends who installed the app too, and also it would help against rumors that this app needs location services. Also it might be that there really is a bug. No way to know for sure atm.

So far so good, the app is surprisingly easy with minimal clutter and coherent design and layout. Concept is very simple and requires very little user intervention. Battery's consumption is ideal, however, phone's battery may take a hit due to the mandatory activation of Bluetooth as a means of communication. Bravo and thanks for the time and effort creating this App!

After using a couple of days, it gave me an error that the risk could not be calculated even though exposure logging had been active 24/7 via Bluetooth. Gave me an error that I should activate Exposure logging. When I tapped on it, it brought me to the Exposure logging screen where it mentioned it was already active. Couldn't do anything about it except reinstall. Now the day counter is 0 again. So, I guess I will never know about the risk in the first week I used it. Developers should fix this.

Works flawlessly for me. I am impressed with the interface. I didn't think that a government funded app could be this user friendly. Let alone from the German government. In typical German fashion the app greets you with a long and detailed article. Nothing gets broken down to basics for you, which I find a little too much. Most people are morons, and you should design an app around that, then provide more info, if the user is interested.

As an Android software tester, I have to say I'm very impressed with how well-designed this app is - including the fact that it's also available in English! And the English text throughout the app is impeccable. The English privacy policy is also impressive for its use of simple language - no "lawyer-speak". The rest of the app is well-designed, easy to navigate and use. Good job!

  62. Ouissal Benameur-avatar

    Ouissal Benameur

The design, simplicity, availability of this app in English and the fact that it is open source are the main reasons why I am giving it 5 stars. Great job! However, it would have been better if the user could see with how many devices did the app exchange IDs because having a "no exposure until now" notification while you have actually interacted with a lot of people but none of them happen to use the app will give a false sense of security and make people be less likely to take precautions.

  63. Isabel Voigt-avatar

The layout is clean and simple, exactly how it should be. Very happy with it so far! Had the 'exposure logging is not active' problems mentioned in the comments a few days ago, but was able to fix it by updating the app (but battery saver mode can also be a cause). Also must have GPS on all the time, because Bluetooth and GPS interfaces are coupled on some phones. But it doesn't use the GPS data and I can simple turn off GPS access for all other apps. Haven't noticed impact on battery life.

  64. James Kuijpers-avatar

    James Kuijpers

The app is easy to use. You start it up and that's it, exposure logging can be turned off (for instance for when you're home and not receiving guests) but then you have to remember to turn it on again when you go outside. So, I just leave it on. I don't notice any difference on my battery. It really seems to be very energy efficient. I do hope they allow people with playstore accounts registered outside of Germany to install the app too. The more people install this the more effective it is.

  65. Michael Leiber-avatar

    Michael Leiber

Does what it is supposed to do. Not more, not less. Update. The UI would benefit from some improvements - When you open the app the first time for a few seconds it shows 'risk unknown' until it switches to the respective risk display. I would suggest you don't show unknown as an interim state - this is confusing,. Show something that indicates that the app is gathering the status and only show unknown when it is not able to do so. - On the low risk screen the status '14 of 14 days active' is a funky way of showing that you have covered the last 14 days. I would rephrase this to something more meaningful.

  66. Patrick Teichmann-avatar

So far there is nothing to complain about. There are several articles, videos and shows that praise the transparency and the privacy of this app (open source). And since even the CCC has virtually no concern regarding the app or it's technology, nobody should be worried about their personal information or their battery performance. You only have to activate Bluetooth, when you go outside/meet people, afaik. The more people use it, the more it helps in warning or even protecting your loved ones.

  67. Abhijeet Mishra-avatar

    Abhijeet Mishra

For the first version this is a well made app. Those who complain about Bluetooth need to know that the app needs Bluetooth to talk to other devices when you go outside. Those who complain about no risk alerts so far need to know that if not many people have installed it on the very first day in your proximity. In terms of privacy this is as transparent as they come. Instead of throwing fancy words around feel free to contribute to the open source code on github. Words are always cheap.

Hi, the app does not seem to work any original chinese xiaomi phone. It's the Mi 9cc pro in my case. Error 17. Google services are installed and up to date. The problem which i see is that this entire system does not really make sense if not as many people as possible are able to use it reliably. So what i mean is, this app should support also entirely foreign phones without any restrictions. No one can be expected to buy a local phone for that purpose only.

Very simple and straightforward to use. The app guides you through all the necessary steps you need to take to enable logging. There is no information about my risk level yet but that is to be expected as I only just activated exposure logging. It even warns you when Bluetooth or Location is turned off. Feature Request: I wish I could see how many people I have been in contact with each day according to the app. That way each user is able to verify the functionality of the app for themselves.

The apps worked fine the first few days, I guess. It has been "13 out of 14 days active" since weeks although it updates daily. Not sure if this is intentionally or there was some error, because the apps says the data is supposed to be deleted after 14 days. So after 14 days it will restart for another 14 days or....?

My exposure logging is switched to active, but at the same time the app tells me about exposure logging not being possible.m and that I should turn on my exposure logging. The last update was from June 16th (writing in the early hours of June 20th) I also cannot make a screenshot for a bug report, therefore this is my bug report. Any suggestions?

The app & its code look good at first glance. However, I immediately see a point that should be improved upon: there should be a simplified explanation of what the app does when launching it for the first time. Currently, there appears to be only a very long text that contains all information. I suspect few people will read this to the end and it might even scare off potential users. This could be done better.

Easy to install and zero maintenence. The location vs GPS permission mess is an unfortunate Android disadvantage but if you are really bothered by it, you can find out easily enough how to fix the settings. Android gives you a lot of options for individual permissions but like having many features in a car you still need to take a moment to check which button does what. Anyway, the app runs smoothly with minimal impact on my battery and it feels good to be part of the solution for the crisis.

Looks great at first glance. It easily installs on a one plus 2 running lineage 15.1 (Android 8.1). There are two downturns. The privacy statement in the beginning is very long. On the other hand this together with it being open source shows the high transperancy. Furthermore it needs location service to be active to work correctly. Though it not uses location itself the API is based on needs the Bluetooth part of the location services. Hopefully it will be a great help.

It worked literally for 24 hours. Now it tells me that exposure logging is not possible, even though it's active. I've turned it off and on again and still nothing changes. It's June 22nd and the last time it logged information was June 17th. What possible use could this app have, if the logging only works for a day or two and then it just completely stops working. My Bluetooth and location have been on throughout the entire time. The app is basically rendered useless.

App worked fine for a day or two but is now showing 'exposure logging is not possible". There is a button labelled 'activate exposure logging', when I press this I come to a screen which shows me that exposure logging' is already activated. Turning logging off and back on again gives no improvement. Using Redmi Note 7 with latest updates. Later: removed and reinstalled. App worked fine for two days, then the exact same problem reappeared. Latest: After update five days ago the app is working ok

I wish I could see, with how many phones data was exchanged. Bcs after some sleep time, my phone goes into power saving mode (e.g. not using mobile internet). Dont know if this could also affect Bluetooth usage. So there should be a counter "data exchanges today / last 7 days / last 14 days / overall"

It stopped working once it reached 14 days... before that it was Ok, afterwards I just got several error messages. Works as well in Belgium. Still not clear to me whether the labs in Belgium are also connected to the registration system? Also all other European countries should be connected otherwise I see that in case of an infection abroad (vacation period) the infected person can not notify the others through the QR code from the labs?! An overview of all connected labs or general the countries can be added to the app. Please think on European level and not on national level, this won't be sufficient!

I've had the app for almost three weeks, but the first page has been saying "13 of 14 days active" for the last few days. Doesn't work for me, and it's really hard to figure out what the problem is. I think the restrictions involving play store country etc are .. too restrictive. Stopping the Pandemic at every person which uses this app! Incredibly strong in privacy: does not even ask your name or age or if you are a human at all. Only transmits data after you tell it that you have been tested for the virus with positive result. Which means for most people, it will never transmit any data. Nobody even knows if you are using the app or not!

I am surprised how good government software can become if they are focused and have the user always in mind. Also having it open source and keeping the public informed is a great example on how we should develop this type of software. I hope there will be more health apps made in Germany which are build for the user. Just paying for an expensive Hotline is a kind of downside, but that's not the problem of the app.

Simple and straight forward. Technology is explained well. Permissions are clear and explained as well. . . . One little problem though regarding ux: the last screen after allowing exposure logging suggest to the user that you can or should go back. While it's actually the default app screen (if exposure logging is enabled). I guess this could be done better in later iterations.

Let's outsmart this thing! Would it make sense to extend the recording period to 28 days to expand the amount of people that can be informed, since testing and reporting and classical contact tracing can still take a few days? Maybe with a new warning level.

The app seems really easy to use and well designed for technophobes like me. However since I installed it just under a week ago I've experienced multiple UI system crashes - one of which wasn't resolvable without factory reseting my device. Initially I was happy to soon have a usable Corona warn app, but now I am worried. The reason: It needs location services enabled, this was not communicated in advance, until today I was thinking it would only need Bluetooth. I know that it does not use GPS, so it should be OK with battery consumption. But other apps will use the enabled location service to collect location data this is not acceptable. I am sure Google is at fault here not the developers. Still I will use it for now.

Many people in Germany who don't have a German phone contract (e.g. Americans with American phones), are reporting that they cannot even find or download the Germany version of the app. The developer should have dealt with this kind of "geoblocking", because the virus doesn't care about your passport or phone contract.

The app is lacking the basic feature to transparently showing what it does (recording BT contacts). I would have expected it to show some information / statistics of the number of BT contacts, duration and their proximities over the last 2 weeks. The criteria for tracking potential relevant contacts are not transparently shown. It feels like it is just running secretly in the background shielding as much info as possible from the user. It does not create much trust which is a key for the app.

Well designed app, good information. However: I am not very happy that it requires location services. I do not want to share my location all the time. That's why I deactivate it. Even if I would be ok with sharing the location to the RKI , other apps access location as well, where I do not want to share my location all the time. iOS does not require active location service (as far as I know), so I would be happy if the same would be possible with android.

Could have been designed to be more privacy protecting.. like downloading the "infected list" from p2p or public mirrors and not contacting a central server for pulling "info pages" this is not required for the operation of the app. Furthermore 20 million € is totally absurd, it could have been done for ~500k€ in a shorter timeframe by startups or even less.. Desceptive marketing. The app is widely marketed as secure and non gps tracing. Yet, you have to enable gps to use the app wich forces your smartphone to collect gps data for google.
