They aren't required to be in a horizontal or vertical line, but can also be zigzagged, all you need to do is be adjacent to one another making swipes diagonally possible.

Be sure to combine as many as possible because the larger the group of water animals you cross out, the higher the score. If a combination is greater you may also create a special sea creature that can remove swathes of fish in swift action. Too little of a combination and your score is penalized, so keep each sweep three of the same, at least, to make sure the count keeps rising.

Once you've met the score for the level, you'll be presented with a star score that shows you how well you've done. You can always resume to the last level you reached to try again.
