There aren't too many horror movies that are nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, and even fewer actually win Oscars like the Best Adapted Screenplay Award. Similarly, there are few horror movies that film critics and fans still talk about with reverence decades after their release.
The 1973 landmark picture, "The Exorcist," is an anomaly. For the horror genre, or any genre, it was extremely well-made and influential, thanks in large part to its disturbingly realistic feel. Like his previous film, "The French Connection," director William Friedkin made excellent use of real life locations to tell a compelling story. Here is Georgetown, many of those locations are still here, including Georgetown University, The Tombs bar and, of course, the legendary "Exorcist Steps." Taking a tour through these Georgetown landmarks is a way to see the stories behind “The Exorcist” come to life here in the heart of Washington, D.C.
