Sky Map is a hand-held planetarium for your Android device. Use it to identify stars, planets, nebulae and more.

Originally developed as Google Sky Map, it has now been donated and open sourced.

Make sure you haven't switched into manual mode. Does your phone have a compass? If not, Sky Map cannot tell your orientation. Look it up here: http://www.gsmarena.com/

Try calibrating your compass by moving it in a figure of 8 motion or as described here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1EPbAapaeI.

Are there any magnets or metal nearby that might interfere with the compass? Try switching off "magnetic correction" (in settings) and see if that is more accurate.

In Android 6 the way permissions work has changed. You need to enable the location permission setting for Sky Map as described here:

https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/6270602?p=app_permissons_m

Try adjusting the sensor speed and damping (in settings). We have a better solution coming soon!

Google Play Reviews

  1. Jack Dooney-avatar

The app works fine except for one MAJOR flaw. The map, in automatic mode is exactly 180 degrees off. And it's not a compass issue because the compass app my phone comes with is spot on (checked with a map and sighting off landmarks). It's still handy to use, if I'm at home because I know which way the backyard faces and can put it on manual. But if I'm out in the wild it's not much help.

  2. Martin Sherman-avatar

Great to see the sky. I can even point it up when it's cloudy to still 'see' the sky. The screen can be pointed past the horizon which is great for following the planets and the path if the main constellations. The main problem is my own ignorance, but the app might improve my knowledge as well as other users.

  3. Vishal Desour-avatar

Used to be great, however since I've moved to Australia, when I launch the app, the app continuously shakes. It's really frustrating as you can't see anything and furthermore, it's not calibrated properly and is showing the sun where there is no sun. Very annoying. I used to use this app a lot for star gazing and finding planets. It's a real shame as I'm in a part of the world where star gazing is so good.

  4. Final HIT-avatar

Is your map 100% accurate? Cause I downloaded it to find out what this bright star is in the sky. It's brighter then the North Star.. assuming it's Venus atm.. but it's location is not lining up perfectly... But it's the closest body. It's off by like 3 inches to five maybe from the view on screen.

I was absolutely thrilled to discover that Sky Map is still available in the Play Store even if it has seemingly been orphaned by Google. Literally, a review of this over ten years ago (as far as I can remember) was one of the primary reasons I got an Android device! I miss that device as much as I missed this app until I reinstalled it. 🌌

  6. Ishan Singh-avatar

The best tool of any stargazer.... I've had this app for years and absolutely love it. Pick a star in the sky, any star, point your phone towards it and the app tells you it's name, you can identify stars, planets, constellations, etc with great ease. You can also enter the name of the celestial body you want to see and the app will guide you towards it. It has several cool features including time travel which has made me fall in love with it. Highly recommended for stargazers!

I have tried this app in three separate devices and its been a dead loss in the most recent two. Its best & most effective performance was in an older Samsung android Galaxy Ace (would be, having an astronomy link) My newest mobile, the display just "dances" around, won't stay still to read anything. If you want a decent application for stargazing, then I guess you have to take on one with in-app purchases instead. 2/5 was me being generous, bearing more on its usefulness on a much older phone.

  8. Lin Dsay-avatar

I only recently downloaded and started using this app, thinking it would be fun to have a look at the night sky while walking my dog. It was more than I hoped for. It's really easy to use, accurately matches what I can see in the sky, I love that I can search for an object, and it's encouraged me to learn more about astronomy. It's also brought back some good childhood memories of learning about constellations in the planetarium. I definitely recommend this app, and I can't believe it's free.

  9. Francis A-avatar

Downloaded it to identify a planet and it worked immediately. Simple, easy, and intuitive interface. Just point your phone to the sky and all is revealed. Had me stargazing for a solid hour! Really wonderful app!

  10. Albert Piscene-avatar

I used to love this app, but recently I have been unable to use it as it keeps on saying that my phone needs to be calibrated, and no matter what I do, I can't calibrate it, or get the app to register any movement at all. No matter what direction I point, nothing changes.

Great app for sky gazing. Just hold the phone towards sky like shooting any landscape. You will locate planets, stars , constellation . ,Holds very less memory , accurate and easy to use. Even Ready to pay for such app.

  12. Heather Fuller-avatar

I really like how this shows you what you are looking at. They are drawings but they show the stars, their names. Planets with names. Every direction you turn it shows the galaxy in that direction. It changes as the earth and planets move. It's really cool.

Stops working too much, but when it does work I like that you can choose what you want to see as far as planets stars constellations etc. Maybe make it a little more user friendly and maybe make an option to turn off seeing what's on the other side of the planet

  14. Angie Brown-avatar

App is fine, I find it a bit challenging to calibrate the compass so I dont fully trust where the map is. Not a big deal though. It would be cool if it had a feature when you tapped on a star/planet/constellation, that it would provide some info on it

This app would be something special, if it was close to accurate. Even after calibrating it, it can get NEWS correct, but the placement of constellations is always off. I thought the app just needed to be updated, but there isn't any updates. Maybe that's why.🤨

  16. E. Foote-avatar

Posted a negative review this morning that the map was suddenly frozen. Then later I found the solution in an old review. Go into the app's settings and disable the gyroscope. Voila! Working again. Thank you Ms. Jacobs whoever you are!

  17. Matthew Steven-avatar

This app is cool, but I actually prefer using it through a search engine, because it has a lot more options online. This app needs to be updated quite a bit to match the online version.

  18. Dan McLane-avatar

I downloaded this app a long time ago and never got around to using it. I was wondering if it was worth keeping, so I tried it just now and it's really cool. Works great on my Pixel 3 XL. I've seen comments that say it doesn't work well on some recent phones, but I would contact the developers if that's the case rather than lowering your rating. This is true of so many reviews. You can contact developers rather than venting in your review. I know, I know. Sometimes you just have to vent.

  19. Josef H.-avatar

It was nice, when it lasted... This app no longer works properly. It freezes on launch and has other problems. It's been obviously abandoned by the developers. Luckily, there are better alternatives, such as SkyView.

  20. Autumn Trulson-avatar

I love it. When you are wondering about that nights sky and just open the app and hold your phone towards the sky and see everything you want to know . There are other cool features too. And it's all free with no adds that pop up on my phone ever.

  21. Gopal Krishna-avatar

Superb ! What else can I say about it 😀👍 . It helps me find different planets, stars, constellation etc. Very useful for us and also children because some children like me love to see different constellation etc. Ops! I forgot to tell you that I am using my Papa's phone.

  22. Annie Y-avatar

I'm literally pointing my phone at Venus facing west, but the app is telling me that it's Spica and the Moon next to it. The moon is currently in the east. I'm so baffled because this app used to work.

  23. Imran Asghar-avatar

This app is amazing. Been using it for years. The best use of a mobile phone. Literally puts the universe at your fingertips. Good for beginners and advanced users alike. Perfect 👌

Hey what happened bud? At first it's perfect. But now it's not showing the exact location of anything. Instead, it showing the opposite. Please fix this bug. I really love this app.

  25. Dave Palmer-avatar

This is a pretty nice program but the latitude/longitude grid is not labeled. That makes this app pretty useless for setting up a telescope with an equatorial mount.

  26. Jase Mesker-avatar

No explanation for the symbols used and the menu disappears frustratingly fast. EDIT: i just found a text description in "Help" i assume the icons listed are in the same order... not sure its just text and doesnt show the icons.

The GPS is off. I put the map right at the constellation Orion and it said there was something else there. I found Orion on the map about twenty feet away from where it is in the sky. Please fix this and I will reinstall.

  28. Kathryn Wilson-avatar

Can not see what the stars are called because the image "wobbles" on the screen. Even when I had my phone on a flat surface. Had to turn off as it was making ne feel sick.

  29. Acedia GioVoi-avatar

Used to be brilliant, but started drifting. Not just my phone, I've tested it on other apps. Other people seem to be saying the same. Hopefully it can be fixed asap!

  30. Michael R-avatar

Doesn't work, for the same reason as all the others - it won't auto track despite admitting my compass accuracy is high.

    2019-12-23T01:39:43.988Z

Interesting app... Major problem is the compass is never accurate. The app will tell you if the internal compass needs calibration. This never works, even at high accuracy, it still is off by 90 degrees, give or take. There should be an actual manual calibration option. Not some silly flip-your-phone-for-twenty-minutes-for-no-measurable-improvement method.

  32. Anvar Valeyev-avatar

Why is compass being off by about 10 degrees it's still an issue for like 5 years already? Is it really hard to fix? Had this app on 3 different phones over 4-5 years and the compass is still off by few degrees

  33. Diggsfan14-avatar

It's great but if your phone doesn't have the stuff you need, like a compass on your phone. So if you don't have you can still scroll around the sky with your finger.

  34. Midnight Mist-avatar

DO NOT DOWNLOAD! BROKEN APP!! I've tried downloading on old AND brand new devices; I've found: THIS APP IS BROKEN! Sad... it was once the best I'd ever used. Time to find one that's not broken and is far better!

  35. Tank R.-avatar

I have used this app many times on many devices, and recommend it when people ask about stargazing apps. Unfortunately, this app does not support auto-rotation on the Moto E4. The Moto E4 does not contain a gyroscope device, instead it relies on data from a 3-axis magnetometer and a 3-axis accelerometer to infer rotation in a given direction. Im not sure if this computed rotation value is accessable in code, but a small code update should fix the issue.

  36. fran dalton-avatar

Doesn't work anymore. Stuck on sagittarius. Compass recalibrated to high. Still stuck. Phone restarted. Still stuck. Tried everything.... Used to be very good. Pity really. Gonna miss it.

  37. Ad B-avatar

Absolutely brilliantly Superb. Works as advertised and then some. Spcly the time travel sub feature absolutely rocks. IF u or ur kids are studying or simply fascinated by the dynamic positioning of heavenly bodies then... This app needs to be installed on ur device.. Like yesterday. This Google sky map app is the ONLY APP to get a 5 star rating from me. Of the 500+ I've tried over the past 10 years, not a single app has every got 5 stars nor met my needs and wants, let alone exceed it.

  38. Karolyn Duncan-avatar

Fantastic - clear to see and super easy to use. Don't even hesitate - just download this app and you'll see what I mean!

  39. JATIN BEHAL-avatar

Easy to use and calibration is good. My 6 years old daughter likes this app as it is easy to use.

  40. Liam Stuckey-avatar

Initially was a brilliant app, now it just shakes about when pointing in one direction, this app has clearly been abandoned by the developers which is a shame.

  41. Tej Sridhara-avatar

Good app. But the direction refresh is too fast. I cant read any names because everything moves too fast.

  42. Menan S-avatar

Excellent free application. Superb design. Highly recommend. Lots of Thanks to the developer.

  43. Carmen Hafley-avatar

I've used this app for a long time. Instant info of the sky you're looking at. I like how you can focus in on just stars, planets, systems, or everything! Also has a search and shows you where the starts or planets you're looking for are located at that time. Best one I've found.

  44. Bobbie Jean-avatar

Really good app. Almost easy enough for someone who don't have a lot of experience with smart phones while childish play is not a factor using it . Great setup and visuals too

  45. Lizbeth Espino-avatar

It's sad. It never worked properly ans now it stopped working completely for some reason.

  46. Gary Musgrove-avatar

Nice graphics but unfortunately will not calibrate, allowed access to gps, tried manual, tried re calibration, even tried figure 8 several times. Note 8

  47. Bill Stephens-avatar

Was a great app. Now it shakes like a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, and is unreadable on my LG K10 phone.

  48. revathi s-avatar

Brilliant App and the time travel is top notch ..!! All you need to do is have some quarantine time and galaxy love . Totally Worth it. 🙏

  49. Santiago Czop-avatar

Awesome app! Everything works as intended. I would like to suggest the addition of an option to add a new object on space. Since the amount is limited, it would be nice to have the ability to load the coordinates, name and type of an object and have it displayed. Keep it up! Great work.

This App is fun, just turn on your app, frame the phone like your going to take a picture of the sky and the stars will line up with the names showing, can show just stars or add planets etc.great fun for camping if you have kids with you.(Need a clear sky to view, but it gives idea where stars are if the sky is cloudy.)

  51. J W-avatar

Not accurate. Even tho i clearly see where the moon is for example, skymap was pointing me in totally opposite direction. My accuracy was high and even tried to calibrate anyways, still same result...

I like it tho know it's my dream if I see any star I think I want to know which star is a plants,a star or etc I try to find a app which help to complete my wish I got 3 days then I found sky map and it complete my wish thank you

  53. Nicola Heap-avatar

Great app when it works. I first started using sky map about 5 years ago and it was fantastic. These days the accuracy is more miss than hit and often will show the same stars etc regardless of the direction it is pointed. Reinstalling fixes the problem for a while.

The app is a great app but my problem is that my phone doesn't move around because its on manual, when I put it on automatic it is stuck and that annoys me a lot i tried and tried to fix this but it won't work! it only works on my mom's phone,I don't understand why automatic doesn't work so I only rated 2,sorry!

  56. Ma Al-avatar

Great ap that shows you exactly what is in the sky. Easy to use and navigate. Use it regularly and share it all the time.

  57. Lee r. Kromer-avatar

I saw five stars in the Sky Map. It turns out they were created by Google. They were programming me to rate Sky Map five stars, and I agree - updated: Apr 25th 2020 😷🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠

  58. Bree Jameson-avatar

Feature suggestions: 1) click on a constellation and get a summary of associated mythology. 2) click on planets and get most recent scientific updates. 3) get notifications about events such as upcoming meteor showers, eclipses, etc. 4) click on space station and connect to live feeds/news. 5) online store to buy telescopes, laser pointers, etc. 6) online community/forum to discuss astronomy/space.

  59. Ratul Bhowmik-avatar

Great functions. But UI can be better to enhance the overall UX and usability. That's why one star.

  60. Danni Ginkova-avatar

I think this is the best app if you want to see the constellations around you. I have compared it to others on the store and this one is most accurate.

  61. Dave-avatar

Very inaccurate. Objects show as being below the horizon when they are clearly visible.

  65. Conor Ryan-avatar

It would be terrific if it worked properly but for some reason I can't calibrate it properly which makes it very frustrating to use.

  66. Vic Simon-avatar

Great app....but why are comets not listed. We obviously have it in the sky, i tried its scientific name and its common name with no such luck of identifying it

  67. Jo Smith-avatar

When I open my app it said the sun was about to set in one hour it was noon the sun should have been straight up in the sky. On the app it wasn't it was almost to the Western horizon. And I studied astronomy in school, this app is Bogus and fraudulent.

  68. Paul Dowsett-avatar

Great app. Is there any chance you could add the giant asteroid, 1998 OR2, which is passing close by the earth soon?

  69. Andy Rondeau-avatar

Was not what I expected. Kinda disappointed. Won't show details of the stars, nebula, planets nothing. It will take you back and forth through time. Thought that was pretty cool. But absolutely no info or detailed visuals.i feel really really really let down. Never again

  71. Jude Missall-avatar

The app itself seems to have had some care in its creation, but unfortunately, at least for me, I noticed severe sensitivity issues when using the location. While this can be superseded by the hand motion, it doesn't excuse that a major aspect failed critically for me after multiple tries. I hadn't even been able to test the accuracy of the app due to this, let alone, enjoy it.

  72. Amanda Harris-avatar

Have to figure it out on manual mode. I couldn't calibrate it to the actual position of the moon relative to my position. I was trying to see what a bright planet was that i could see and had to switch it to manual mode and guess what I was seeing. Super inaccurate.

Calibration is always off w/ this app. Btw: to calibrate your phone compass, Open google maps & click blue dot ( Your Current Location ) Then click calibrate compass at bottom....

  76. Gurdeep Singh-avatar

This is an awesome app for universe enthusiastic peoples, But this app has lot of scope of improving like details Distance, size, temperature etc information should be mentioned of stars and planets which should be available on a click.

  77. Chris Stewart-avatar

I like it, I just wish it had a tour mode or something for when I'm out with my scope

  78. Taz Tanz-avatar

It has the sun rising in the west and setting in the east. I've tried calibrating, GPS Location, and manually put in my physical location and it makes no difference. North, South, East and West are correct on the map but the sky is 180° from where one can see actual planets, stars and constellations. Even tried to reload the app. Has the same outcome. It used to work at one time... maybe I woke up in an alternate Earth and galaxy!!!

Automatic doesn't work so it's not very useful. Otherwise it would be great.

  90. M Stick-avatar

Not sure what the problems are for the latest reviews...I tried it last night and everything was great. Night mode, check the calibration, etc. The only thing I think is missing is the ability to adjust the magnitude -- for the stars that you might want to view. FYI my cheap Samsung (J3?) phone is about 6 mo. young. Oh, and has anyone read the ULA before clicking "agree" ?? It's pretty funny: Ex: "If the object you pointed to turns out to be a UFO, and you and your kid are abducted, it's not our fault". And then the bit about the time-space continuum -- go read it! So far, I'm loving it. I'll be heading to Stowe, VT for a few days, so I'll try it with dark-skies there! Oh, did I mention it's a tiny download (compared to some!), AND no ads?

  91. Bash Wolf-avatar

Tried on numerous devices. Galaxy s9. S6, Motorola, iPhone etc. Literallyshows correct scene for 5 seconds then just goes full restart and slowly spins one random direction, south becomes north, etc. This app worked like 7 years ago for a year or so. And has never. Ever. Worked again. I've tried other accounts, and devices. Very disappointed.

  92. Bad Sector-avatar

Really bad accuracy. Works when you first run the app then fails right after. Looking at Mars the other night, and looked at another part of the sky and doing this totally borks the app. Now it doesn't know what it's doing. Uninstalled, reinstalled, compass calibrated...same story. Too bad it doesn't work. By the way, had a friend try it out next to me on his phone and it didn't work on his phone either and did the same thing .. So it's not the devices fault. How this app has such high ratings is beyond me especially when it doesn't work.

It doesn't work right at all. It was perfect 9 years ago. What do you expect from something that's free.

Low functional options, poor visualization, don't like it at all, former versions seems better.

The compass has become unreliable in the past 2 or 3 months. It used to be spot on, now it's a joke.

It's so clear, educational and exciting to see the night sky using Sky Map.

Compass won't calibrate any better than "unreliable." Found out the starmap was facing east while I was facing west. You guys got some work to do.

It's has not been very accurate with 2 different phones that I've used this app on.

used to be my favorite app bit for some reason recently the calibration is totally off. my phone shows high accuracy and I have no issues with any other apps but everything is way off now. it's great to have all the constellations but when things aren't lined up it's kind of pointless. very disappointed with whatever it is they did to lose their accuracy.

I absolutely loved this app. But lately it's been getting buggy. I shake move my phone to restart compass. It it moves on its own now:( plus fix the bug
