The SharkSmart app provides key information and resources to users to help further reduce the small risk of shark bite in NSW waterways. Features and resources include:
My Risk:
It provides a range of interactive features and resources including a fundamental risk assessment profile that allocates a user into a ‘risky’ or ‘safer’ behaviour rating using factors understood to affect shark bite risk. Risk rating escalates higher or lower subject to the input of the user (e.g. swimming at sunrise or dawn would increase the risk). The risk level can be reduced by adjusting risky behaviour but never eliminated (unless the user doesn’t go in the water)
Maps:
This feature shows where the user is in relation to the general location of beaches in the Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program, alternative saltwater swimming locations, alerts about shark-related incidents and news and real-time information from NSW’s VR4G shark listening stations.
Species:
This feature presents images of dangerous and non-dangerous sharks and other marine animals that sting and bite for information and education purposes.
Social Media:
The app offers integrated social media channels hosted by the NSW Department of Primary Industries including Facebook, NSW SharkSmart Twitter and YouTube. There’s also a link to the Department’s SharkSmart webpage so users can be up-to-date with the latest information provided by the department.
Information:
Details about the NSW Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program are provided.
Other Safety Programs:
The NSW Government hosts, supports and/or promotes a range of other water safety programs. Links to key programs are provided so user can get the most out of NSW beautiful waterways while staying safer.

Easy to use, simple and clear info

Unintuitive, difficult. Cannot even add favourite beaches as the app seems to be incapable of doing so. Alerts come in, how I don't know! Frustrating. Needs a lot of work. Well, after contacting the developers and hoping for some improvement, I downloaded and installed it again today 20 Jan 2020. Nothing has improved. Uninstalled it again.

I was hoping the app had been fixed by now considering the importance of this info. All previous reviews remain accurate, app regularly crashes, when you click on the sighting in your area you get the whole list of shark sightings across a huge coastline, not just the one you click on. And it won't save my favourite places. Please use our taxpayer money to fund a real app designer to fix this. Great idea, poor delivery. Uninstalled. Trying Dorsal.

This app has one of the worst user interfaces I have ever seen. Demanding that the user go to Android setting to turn on location, instead of requesting it directly like other apps? Typical of what you would expect from a government app. They really need to shake up how they build things, this definately was not UI tested, but likely built in a rush (or alternatively, with a massive Gantt chart and inflexible requirements). On top of that, the map for me took over a minute to display.

The app has potential, but it's not really addressing user needs. I would suggest that you include coloured pins that indicate shark activity, (ie red/amber/blue), and also list "last detection", if any. Should also report actual shark attacks even if it's outside of supervised beaches. Reporting that a beach is not going to be patrolled is not really helpful, and should be less prominent. Surfers want to know last patrol and the most recent sitings. The app should also request location and start on my location. If not near a beach, just set a default location as it does now.

Does not save location, favourite beaches does not work, aerial detection icon completely wrong. Nice idea but useless. As a Surf Lufesaving Patrol Captain, I was hoping that the app would be useful to us. Awaiting for a proper apo developer to work on this, but as it's a government department, I'm not holding my breath.

Can't save beaches. Same bug as reported in other comments. Interface lacking. Could be super handy if fixed.

  8. Joe Palmer-avatar

Useless app. Cannot save favourite beach so get useless alerts which are not sorted from the latest alerts at the top. Useless to know a shark was in the area a month ago. This app was a waste of taxpayers money and could do more harm than good because vital up to date information may not reach the user.

Can't save favourite beaches so I continued to get all of the alerts. Eventually had to turn off notifications because there were so many but when I check my local area the sightings that had been coming through when notifications were on didn't show up so basically this app is now useless to me.

Useful app. The ability to filter items so only your favourite beaches show is very handy. The access to species descriptions and safety measures to avoid attacks are also great features. May not stop every shark attack but could certainly prevent a lot.
