Really Bad Chess is just like chess, but with totally random pieces. Try 8 Knights, 4 Bishops, and 3 pawns — why not?

As heard on NPR's Weekend Edition

5 out of 5 Stars "An essential puzzle experience for anyone even remotely interested in strategy games" - TouchArcade

Whether you play chess daily, or quit just after learning the rules, this small twist will open the door to an entire new world of chess.

The free version of Really Bad Chess lets you compete vs. an AI in Ranked, Daily, or Weekly Challenges. Improve your skills using the included Freeplay mode. A single in-app purchase unlocks Versus Mode so you can compete against your friends locally! It also removes ads, displays captured pieces, and adds soothing alternate color-palettes to choose from.

"Makes chess fun even if you’re really bad" - The Verge

"Feels more modern than chess has ever felt" - Applenapps

"Really Bad Chess takes a really bad idea and somehow manages to make it a lot of fun." - Pocket Gamer

Chess is one of those games I always wished I enjoyed, but its commitment to beauty, elegance, and perfect balance always turned me away. Really Bad Chess removes these boring restrictions and flips chess on its head.

As much as random pieces change the game in some ways, I was really surprised to notice how much the game remains the same, and how powerful some pieces are — you've never truly struggled against a pawn until you've struggled against a pawn in the back row.

For chess pros, Really Bad Chess will give you a new type of challenge — the pieces & the moves are the same, but you'll have to throw out your openings and your understanding of normal patterns of play.

For novice chess players (like most of us), Really Bad Chess greatly opens up the game. Instead of starting by studying openings, in your first games you'll get to discover the joy (and challenge!) of learning how to checkmate.

I hope you have as much fun with Really Bad Chess as much as I did making it.

Salam. I enjoy the intricacies of this chess style however when you level up in this game the AI starts going berserk on you by a) bringing back its dead pieces once you return to a saved game and b) moving two crucial pieces in the same move. Wow that was so toxic lol AI is so slow in its turn taking and now its pulling such dirty tricks. Please fix these bugs or its no fun leveling up. Someone else might come up with even better 'bad' chess and well.. better AI.

This game, Is incredible. I really love the concept, the way it was executed, and the general visual of the game. I highly recommend this if you are finding for a game to be heavily addicted to, like me. To be honest I'm not mad, it makes me think strategicly and planning ahead. I wish I could give it a 10/5, but alas, that's impossible. GREAT GAME. Also, you should experiment with new pieces, I'd love to see that :D

Please allow more tries for the daily board(don't count for streaks), and move the "YES"/"Try Again" bar so it doesn't obscure the lost pieces row, or at least bring back the "lost pieces" row. I would kill for(die for?) the ability to play friends online in the 1v1 mode. Maybe make/allow Undo's by opponent approval for 1v1. The game has a problem with registering win conditions. To fix, undo, force stop, re-open the app and make your move again.

All right I've been playing this almost daily for almost a year now and it's been alot of fun playing. The concept of totally random pieces evey game is alot of fun, and difficult. The ability to undo a move makes the game more forgiving for a casual player. I don't recall if there was any adds as I payed to unlock the alternate options on the game. The premium payment gave me some undos and alternative colors for the board. My only complaint is there are no draws when it's king vs king.

This is a very fun, very interesting concept. And it is well executed. It isn't like how normal chess where it gets boring because every game is the same. Every game is different, and that is what makes this, such a simple concept, work so well. Its a great time sink. The ONLY thing holding this game back is that at times the AI can be very, very, VERY slow, especially at higher ranks. Beyond that, great game.

A unique take on a game that breaks with tradition just enough to make it more approachable to today's youth. Adding the ability to add and challenge a friends list would really take this game to the next level. Purists may scoff at this but, I believe that it is a great tool that can be utilized to teach entry lvl players how and where each piece can move. And once that part of the game is grasped it is can be a great way to transition to a more traditional style of the game.

Good idea ruined by poor implementation. Avoid paying for premium in this game. Share holders, publishers and developers mixed up in a pot and this was you get. Shame on you really. I've noticed myself avoiding this publisher more and more lately.

Its great! Amazing use of the old chess game but switching up the places and amount of pieces. Basically this game is great and you should try it if you haven't already.

I have played this almost daily for 2 years now... but got new Samsung A51 phone and it cuts out on startup. Not sure why. Hopefully it will be fixed in future release.

New strategies make you think differently. I like that. Not for the new person to chess but for the strategist that doesn't remember all of the opening strategies of chess mastery. Every situation is different so it's much more about your managing pieces than executing opening maneuvers
