It commemorates the saving of Jewish people from Haman, an official of the Persian empire who planned to kill all the Jews. Haman had advised King Xerxes of Persia to put all Jews to death, but his evil plot was foiled by Mordecai and his adopted daughter Esther, who had become Queen of Persia. Since the deliverance, Purim has been celebrated on the 14th day of the month of Adar according to the Hebrew calendar, every year. Some customs include exchanging greetings such as “Chag Purim Sameach, Freilichin Purim”, masquerading in costumes and masks, carnivals, and eating traditional pastries such as hamantaschen and Kreplach dumplings.
