Pakistan is an agrarian economy blessed with four seasons and topographies suitable for most of the crops, orchards and forestry. Agriculture contributes around 20% in the GDP and provides raw material to large scale manufacturers besides key source of income for transportation, wholesale & retail, insurance and banking sectors. Around 70% of country’s population is dependent on agriculture for their livelihood.
However, agriculture has largely remained under performed with far less per acre yields compared with regional and international standards. The sector suffers compound problems of lack of physical assets, financial support and human resource development. The problems have aggravated by farmers inability to adopt technological advancements besides rapid climate change and non-conducive policy constraints including devolution of agriculture and allied issues. As such, the area and yields are stagnant since more than a decade.
Information and communication technology (ICT) services involve the transfer of practical knowledge and exchange of market information through ICT platforms. These solutions are relevant to agricultural and rural transformation processes, especially for small holders. Growth in the use of internet and mobile technology by farmers is emerging as game changer in the provision of information and extension services.
People who work in agriculture, especially the new generation farmers, are increasingly adopting digital and mobile technology to manage their farming activities.
