Reviews From google play store

I love the app but I do have a question. I had it on my android box running android 6 and it worked like a charm. today I loaded it on my android box running android 9 and all I get is a black screen or it kicks me out.Is there an update I need to do to get it to work with android 9?

Claims to be an open source application, downloaded and installed the server, at no point does it say it requires a subscription to unlock features. I set up a live TV source, says I need to restart the server. After the restart, it "updated" and now says nothing will work without a subscription, and the 1 feature that I was looking for is disabled. That is NOT in keeping with the open source products I've used in the past, and I will not be investing any more effort to work with this.

Cannot get past login screen. I enter my credentials (which works on browser or regular Emby android app), but then I just get black screen. Unusable on my Beelink GT King. Samsung Tizen TV (H series)is terrible. Happy to troubleshoot, but considering Plex as the app works without issue on Android box and Samsung TV.

30 minutes, first day not an issue. Next day no auto login. Tardy keyboard response. 30 minutes to login. Not inspired to spend big bucks on this.

I was always a plex fan, but i must say im very surprised with emby, all works smooth even incombi with my nvidia shield. Keep UP the good work! Its worth every penny.

App doesn't passthrough Dolby Atmos. Onkyo receiver with Nvidia Shield

Anyone who uses Plex needs to switch, better UI, better customer care, works better...just plain better!!!

Can't even open app. Just crashes. Tried reinstalling it and no luck. Not working on Huawei Pro P30

On the X96S Android Smart TV Does not work...

For the most part everything works fine, but when I have multiple versions of recorded TV shows and movies, it will only play the original video file. For example, I use Mcebuddy to remove commercials, but I want to keep the original files in case MceBuddy cuts too much out. I select the other video file, but it refuses to play it and only plays the original. This does not happen on the regular Emby app, only on the Android TV version. Very strange and I hope it gets fixed soon.

After you take the time to set this up properly you won't find a better media front/backend, this is an all in one solution. I tell it where my media is stored and it downloads cover art, trailers, and descriptions in a beautiful display. If that is what you are looking for then this is the app for you, the administrators answer questions on their forum quickly and will make you realize your mistake, in many years (since media browser days) my problems have never been their fault.

If I'm not mistaken this is a very new release? Or was it the Server for the nVidia Shield TV? First off the Pros: Emby does what Plex doesn't! What is it exactly that Plex can't do? I hear you ask. Multichannel Audio *.dff/.dsd, and .flac Files for a start. Now the Cons. I find the GUI a bit underwhelming, for something that costs 5€'s to make a use of. Worse then this is the fact that the Folder Level Search / Browsing Layer, only shows more Files, and no easily discernable "Folders". pls fix.

Great. Would love it more and rate 5 stars if there was video themes. Also being able to sort by quality would be great. I made the switch from plex to emby and I am greatful I did. But the feature I would be most impressed by would be, something added to a "fake live TV guide" using all your local content, kinda like pseudo TV live for kodi .... Now that would be insane!!! Keep up the good work!

Been using Emby and before that Media Browser for 10 years. This app seriously blows. Playback is horrible, completely hit or miss and if you miss it will lock up your tv. so that you have to restart it to get back to normal function. I have a 2018 Sony xbr 900e .... but I am sure a dev will be along to tell me my tv sucks. Fix this garbage app. DO NOT BUY BEFORE YOU TRY.

It is great. It works well and is simple to use for all video related options. It offers a home screen fast lane to speed up navigation but only for the home screen. Most libraries navigate vertically which also speeds up browsing for media a whole lot just not for collections. I really enjoy using it on a daily basis.

I'm unable to filter by video resolution (720P, 1080P, 2160P). There is no filter for that for the Android TV box app. The filter is available for the web browser app though. So disappointing. Please fix this and allow the filter on the Android TV box.

have it installed on 2 Nvidia Shields on 2 different home networks. The server is on a third home network. Both lose connection to server all the time requiring server info to be re-entered. Most of the time it requires clearing data on the app, then re-entering the server info. It will work for an hour or a few days, but eventually the procedure will have to be repeated. Android phones on the same networks always work flawlessly, connecting without problem right next to a Shield getting 'cannot connect to server.' Response to support: Yes we have tried using static IP addresses. Still the same problem. As I said these Nvidia Shields are all on separate home Internet connections in different houses, so DLNA does not mattter. The response from support is the same as always. "sounds like a network problem" It is NOT a network problem ALL OTHER CLIENTS WORK FLAWLESSLY ON THE SAME NETWORKS. It is a problem with the Emby client for Android TV. This client should be DIFFERENT from a standard Android client. My review stands until Emby fixes the Android TV client.

Awful app I've paid for the unlock on android TV its still the same as free version then paid for the premiere on the pc version and can not transfer to my android version. Utter waste of my money 😡 i bought a premier license and it did transfer over so I cancelled monthly recurring payments 5 days later which I still had month of premier and still never transferred over to my TV!

Works great, clean interface. Haven't had any issues with it and using it on Nvidia shield for past 2 years

Been using Emby since the early MB days and it keeps getting better. I reccomend it to all my family and friends.

wonderful product, been using the system for 3 years now and even with the ocasional bug its usually fixed by the next update (or to) the whole system is well worth a look at

I have been using Chromecast on my android tv for a few months. After discovering this app my Emby experience is been exceeding my expectations and my tv is performing better with this app then Chromecast.

Video playback has been randomly stopping lately on my Nvidia Shield TV. I've had to resort to using their url on Chrome to use emby.

Hello unable to even download on my Sony Bravia 4k tv. Tried the app store and via web browser download. Really disappointing. Makes having a Emby server on my laptop pointless.

Crashes all the time. Slow and buggy. Freezing. I love the style of emby plex is far more stable

works god, the internal player needs some work but you can use a external player like vlc.

Work in progress. Will be great when they enable transcoding.

Nice clean layout however can't locate favorites?

Better Experience than Plex.

Artificially locked out Jellyfin support. Maybe being hostile to users will work for you. Edit: No thanks. I won't support you. It was a knee-jerk, hostile move to lock out something that worked on its own. It has nothing to do with being open source.

Could you add audio language before playing the media? Sometimes when I change the language of the audio it doesn't change unless I restart the episode and quickly change it, even on pause it doesn't seem to work? Also a separate favourites tab with all favourites would be handy! EDIT 27/2/2019 Thanks for the updates guys, keep working at it! It's getting better each update!

Love emby 💯%

This app is ok but they need to make the poster wall a full grid that is vertically scrollable and not just a couple/few rows that are horizontally scrollable. They also need to put a letter bar to the right that allows a quick jump to that letter in the grid. Take a look at Plex's Android TV app as to how it should be.

Emby blows plex out of the water! Use this app if you have an android box! Absolutely flawless!

Great except SSA/ASS subtitles display as plain text not as the styled text they should be, once that is fixed it will be a five star app

does not work on my android tv box

My review only includes for this as a media server provider. It's tremendous. To make it clear it is as easy as Plex to set up. In my opinion the picture quality, sound, stability and manoeuvrability of this app is better than the Plex equivalent. Also, my server doesn't miss a beat.

None of the videos play correctly. From SD , 720p , 1080p or 4k. Nothing work correctly. Glitch app ever

I had install on pc and scan all my 1080p movies, when i want to play on my tv under emby android, why it prompt me to purchase? Is it a must?

Too bad that it doesnt allow movie genre search/filter or by year.

Works well. Use it daily

Emby on my old samsung KS tv was awesome. The android version is a stuttering mess. All the Mic files that played on the Samsung tv. Only half play on the android version

Not good. Lots of settings missing. Wish it looked like Emby Theater.

I can't connect to the server is not working anymore i need help

Everytime i select a show, the app crashes. Not the servers fault either.

Brilliant! Yes, the app seems is a bit basic, but with the correct server setup, it works great! Streaming obviously depends on your bandwidth, but I've had no issues streaming 4K and 1080p x264/x265 videos to my Shield TV. I recommend this over Plex because it's open source and doesn't track any telemetry.

This needs a lot of work. I would like to be able to alter the home screen view and arrange movie and TV sections

Can't connect outside my home network via my friends shield. No useful help pages and tried official forum etc.

Works well on Sony Android TV but has intermittent loss of sound (1-2 secs) during playback of video files with AC3 encoding. Works fine with AAC and DTS.

Good app except for the aspect ratio. Everything that is in an other aspect ratio than my 16:9 1080p tv gets stretched out. Please fix this. Add a button like in the non TV app (cropped / zoomed / best fit) or something like that. Using DLNA via Kodi on my Android tv for now.

Stops playback often. The Audio is off for many TV shows, but most movies are fine. The interface is way better than Kodi, so I'll give it that.

I have to adjust audio -200ms on playback for my Nexus Player. For my Nvidia Shield TV, or my laptop, this is not a problem. I can play the same video on the other devices, and the audio is perfectly sync'd, but on my Nexus Player, it is not. My laptop is using the web emby, and my Nvidia shield and Nexus Player are using the emby for android tv. I am hesitant to purchase premiere because of this :/

I've got this app installed on an Nvidia Shield Android TV box, and it works really well!

First review: Great app, but subtitles were buggy and video playlists were not supported. Updated: Both issues were fixed and i received prompt support on their forums. Neither of those things could be said for Plex customer service. I have since cancelled my PlexPass and have switched to Emby. Keep up the great work :)

Update: 5/13/16 i have been told by the developers that this app is for Android TVs. I don't understand why it would say that it is compatible with my devices if it's not build for them. I have no experience with Android TVs. Previous review: Trying to select a file is so incredibly frustrating! The menu snaps to a separate menu. That's not even mentioning the notifications that you can't dismiss. Ugh.

I had to buy a month subscription just to test playback on my smart TV (android 4.2.2). App works great ! It took some playing around with settings to get everything running smooth. With the latest app update, android 4.2.2 is no longer supported. So guess I'm stuck using Kodi.

I currently have the NVIDIA SHIELD and was really hoping for a better experience. The biggest issue is the no audio passthrough. If Plex can do it so can Emby. I really want to get rid of DirecTV but the live TV portion doesn't quite cut it especially without audio passthrough.

Great app, but missing a couple things: 1) Ability to force/allow transcoding on the Android TV instead of on the server end 2) Ability to mass mark items watched. Other than that I love it, it's great!

Mostly works well

Would not recommend this app. Currently have installed Plex, Kodi, and Emby on the same computer. They have great ideas: Bookshelf for pdfs, View inside archived files Otherwise they have the same features as Kodi or Plex.. Why the one star? Tunein - Didn't work, (Perhaps I didn't wait for long enough) Not all video's work, (Perhaps I didn't wait for long enough) Music didn't work, (Perhaps I didn't wait for long enough) Compared to Plex: Plex cost 50 dollars more for lifetime membership. Plex transcoding works flawlessly and faster You can add unsupported addons in Plex Compared to Kodi: Kodi is free As long as you don't add to many unsupported addons Kodi is stable, I'm not running this on a cheap machine: ASUS Sabertooth x99 ASUS STRIX GTX™ 980 64 Gigs of Ram Recommendation - grab Plex or kodi if you want easy to install software. Just don't use the unsupported addons unless you are willing to invest a little time into the software.

This app is fantastic, best app for AndroidTV. I have use or have tried Plex, SlingTV, Netflix, Pluto, etc.. Nothing is better for watching media. This app actually resulted in me getting a second Nexus player for another room. And now with Live TV It's even better!

This latest update plugged all the holes that were keeping it from being my complete HTPC solution. After Microsoft killed Netflix and damaged Live TV on Windows Media Center, this app allowed me to use the Nexus Player as the front end for my HTPC, and run the Windows box unmanaged and untouched in the background with Emby Server and it's support for ServerWMC for LiveTV. File playback of TV shows and movies is great, Live TV is now totally functional and usable. The only thing that was not 100% was that when starting playback of recorded TV, skipping commercials took a little bit longer than I liked... but that's only at the beginning of the playback. Once it buffers the video enough, it's very responsive to skip forwards and back.

One update to the next 5*-1*. Notifications won't clear. Select it and the app crashes. Restart my phone to clear this is just sad. Note 3

this app is amazing. GREAT JOB dev team !

I love the way Emby plays, however its apps lack. The issue with this one is missing functionality. I cannot get subtitles to work at all. They only appear if I play my movie, stop it, and then resume it and even then when I try to start them the whole movie freezes. I thought it was maybe an issue with my server, but when I use my app on my phone and send movies to my tv via its broken Chromecast functionality I can show subtitles with no issues. The Android TV version is also missing a lot of the settings that can improve it that the android app version has.

I own a Sony 4K Android TV (KD-55X8505C). Generally the app seems to be good but I noticed that some features don't (always) work like resuming a video. Resuming mostly takes a while and then plays without sound. The fast-forward also sometimes causes the audio not to play anymore, the video lags a bit after forwarding and sometimes the complete playback stops. Also when navigating up in the on-screen controls for the playback the cursor disappears and won't come back. I'd suggest that these on-screen controls are changed to the default Android TV ones like those in Google Play Movies and YouTube. Also there doesn't seem to be a fast option to enable/change subtitles and audio tracks. I love that this App uses Material Design in most areas but it could be materialized a bit more.

The other Android app works great with EmbyTV for live TV and recordings. This one freezes up on a shield console.

Awesome. Works well. The green has to go.. it looks much better in the screenshots on the site.

Very smooth.

Interface is clean with easy access to libraries. Playback is decent...audio does a very short skip at times, even connected at AC with server connected at full Gig. Look forward to future updates.

The latest version is working great. Ran into a few minor issues that turned out to not be related to the app. Developers were very helpful and responsive to feedback.

great interface, playback starts nice and fast and it even comes with recommendation cards on the nexus player home interface. fantastic, and keep up the awesome work!

Excellent introduction to Google TV.

I installed emby on my Linux server and then on my nexus player looking for a free way to stream my videos. After a month I have to donate to continue using the app on the nexus player. For the money plex is a better choice less bugs, a lot less bugs. So I have uninstalled the app and will uninstall the server off of my server. My two cents worth don't force people to donate until the bugs are ironed out. I will use kodi which is still free and open source.

cannot read names of folders. more than 2 lines do not fit on screen. has a long way to go to beat plex.

Interface is very poor, too much scrolling required to get where you want. No playlists from Emby server either...... Should have full integration from an official app!

Awesome program until I did a fresh install now they want $5. Guess I shouldn't have done a reinstall.

really complicated to set up

We can't seek to particular time while watching video. Missing very basic feature.

Loved it
