The Eiffel Tower is named after its main designer; the French metallic structure expert and engineer, Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel had previously designed multiple metallic structures such as several railway bridges and the armature for another world known monument, the statue of Liberty. This time he had his eyes on construction a metallic structure in the shape of a tower. Including the antenna at the top, the Eiffel Tower is 984 feet tall. If you like to walk, there are 1,652 steps to the top. From the top of this tower you can see 50 miles in any direction. What many people do not know is that the Eiffel Tower was originally planned to be constructed in Barcelona, for the Universal Exposition in 1888, but it was turned down as it was “too expensive and strange”. Instead, Eiffel tried to build the Eiffel Tower in Paris for the Universal Exposition in 1889 and this time the building was approved. On the third and final floor, at 180 meters high, you will find Gustave Eiffel's office, panoramic and orientation tables, information about the main sites of Paris, plus the direction and distances to main cities in the world. Fifty engineers produced over 5300 drawings of the different parts needed in order to construct the tower. The towers 18.000 metal parts were built separately in workshop and then assembled on site by using more than 2.500.000 rivets. Work on the foundations started in 1887. The finished components, some already riveted together into sub-assemblies, arrived on horse-drawn carts from the factory in the nearby suburb of Levallois-Perret and were first bolted together, the bolts being replaced by rivets as construction progressed. The main structural work was completed at the end of March 1889. The tower was an immediate success in Paris, France. The Eiffel Tower caused a violent polemic, meeting nearly unanimous hostility from the Parisian artistic world. Once the Tower was finished the criticism burnt itself out in the presence of the completed masterpiece, and in the light of the enormous popular success with which it was greeted. It received two million visitors during the World's Fair of 1889. Features: 1. High quality live wallpaper. 2. You can hide or unhide moving items, only background will be visible. 3.
