فيودور ميخايلوفيتش دوستويفسكي واحد من أكبر الكتاب الروس ومن أفضل الكتاب العالميين، وأعماله كان لها أثر عميق ودائم على أدب القرن العشرين. شخصياته دائماً في أقصى حالات اليأس وعلى حافة الهاوية، ورواياته تحوي فهماً عميقاً للنفس البشرية كما تقدم تحليلاً ثاقباً للحالة السياسية والاجتماعية والروحية لروسيا في ذلك الوقت. العديد من أعماله المعروفة تعد مصدر إلهام للفكر والأدب المعاصر، وفي بعض الأحيان يذكر أنه مؤسس مذهب الوجودية. تم القبض على دوستويفسكي وزج به إلى السجن في 23 ابريل من عام 1849، لكونه أحد اعضاء جماعة التفكير المتحرر " جماعة دائرة بتراشيفيسكي، . بعد الثوره في عام 1848 في أوروبا كان القيصر " تسار نيكولاس، جاف وقاسي في التعامل مع اية جماعات تعمل في الخفاء، والتي احس انها من الممكن ان تهدد الحكم الفردي المتعامل به. في 16 نوفمبر من تلك السنه، كان دوستويفسكي ومعه باقي اعضاء " جماعة دائرة بتراشيفيسكي قد حكم عليهم بالإعدام. بعد عملية اعدام زائفه، والتي خلالها وقف دوستويفسكي مع باقي الأعضاء في الخارج في اجواء متجمده منتظرين فرقة الإعدام لتقوم بالحكم. تغير حكم الإعدام على دوستويفسكي إلى اربع سنوات من النفي مع العمل الشاق - بالاضافة الي التجنيد اربع سنين ولكن بعد 8 أشهر شفع له بارون عند الامبراطور حتي رقي لظابط ثم الي ملازم ثان مستعيدا بذلك حقوق النبالة ولكن لم يسمح له بالذهاب الي العاصمتين سانت بطرسبرغ وموسكو - في سجن كاتورجا، في مقاطعة اومسك، بسيبيريا،. بعد سنين شرح دوستويفسكي إلى اخيه المعاناة التي تعرض لها عندما كان " يغلق عليه التابوت ". وصف له الثكنات العسكريه المتداعيه، والتي كما وصفها بكلماته عندما كتب " كان من المفترض ان تهدم منذ سنين ". فارق دوستويفسكي الحياة عام 1813, فمشى في جنازته ثلاثون ألف شخص تقريباً, وعم الحزن روسيا كلها Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky is one of the greatest Russian writers and among the best international writers, and his works have had a profound and lasting impact on literature of the twentieth century.
