Permissions

Why does CellMapper need so many permissions?
"make and manage phone calls" - This is required to get low level network data from your device
"access to device location" - In order to map and contribute, we will need to know where the data was recorded from your device.

Older versions of Android:
android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION - To get CellID information
android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION - To get GPS location
android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE - To get Cellular network information
android.permission.INTERNET - To connect to server to download map data / upload data
android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE - To write external CSV file if no internet connection
android.permission.READ_LOGS - To read Samsung Field Test Mode data on Android 4.1 and earlier (despite what the dialog says, the app cannot read your browsing history unless your browser write it to the system log)
android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE - To read info about airplane mode / network settings
android.permission.RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED - To start at boot time (if enabled)
android.permission.VIBRATE - To vibrate on CellID change (if enabled)
android.permission.WAKE_LOCK - For phones that do not support 4.2+ CellID Support, to ensure they report correct data
android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE - To write external CSV file and debug report

App ChangeLog

  • - Read 5G NSA Cell Identity/ARFCN/PCI on some Huawei devices
  • - Fixed error logging data points for providers with special characters in names (such as apostrophe or quote)
  • - Fixed NR cells showing up multiple times
  • - Fixes for Huawei phones

Google Play Reviews

I gave CellMapper ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ because it does what I want when I want it. Normally I've had good signal while wandering the Southwest, so who cares where the cell towers are. But when the signal is weak I want to know so that I can "aim" my mifi device using my RV as a collector/reflector to concentrate the the signal. I seldom use CellMapper but when I need, I need it. Pixel 3XL Android 10

  2. guest-avatar

beta does not show my own records. Usage is a bit confusing. Existing data would be useful but I do not understand how to choose the operator and network type and possibly certain mast coverage measurements. All in all quite a useless app as such.

ios Loads of useful information. Great little app!

o2 Used to be good, not so much now. When I first started using the app, it added the data liked they advertised, within a week. Sometime during the summer, my data stopped showing up. I complained, and they suggested I try the premium service and data would show up within hours. All it did was return the weekly updates for the first month. By the second month, the data is taking about a month. I've now cancelled, and I'm not sure I'll do anymore collections. 2020/03/05: there data updates are good

  6. guest-avatar

forum Wasnt sure if instant upload ever worked. Made sure battery optimization want on. Paid for premium, would still get ads occasionally. Wanted to help map out 5g, but with the issues I mentioned, not worth it.

  7. guest-avatar

iphone Not very useful since it points to a tower and does not give me the latitude/longitude or a relative compass bearing. Just a general direction. Like all the other apps in this category, just a waste of time.

  8. guest-avatar

premium UI scaling doesn't work correctly. UI cuts text when text or display size is set bigger/larger than "normal" from Android settings.

  9. guest-avatar

5g Never seemed to collect any points/towers/cells even though SIM was connected to mobile network and could receive calls (no outgoing calls as no credit on PAYG but that shouldnt make any difference to gathering network data)

apk Great concept but poor execution. Collected data does not show up on the map. We the users are doing the app makers a favor by collecting data. But if it does not show up what good is it for the user.

  11. guest-avatar

So far only have a Google map of where I live. I can get that from Google. No towers show up anywhere from any provider. Search function is useless. App does nothing for me

  12. guest-avatar

UI isn't perfect but the app is functional and i appreciate having the extra information it can show me. Takes some of the guesswork out.

  13. guest-avatar

Why would the app need to manage phone calls?

  14. guest-avatar

Takes 8-10 weeks minimum before uploaded data is displayed on the map.

  15. guest-avatar

Overall good app. Dual SIM capability is useful.

  16. guest-avatar

Unable to sign in. Can sign in on the website but the app keeps saying error

  17. guest-avatar

App is most useful when combined with the website, but it does what it says on the tin, very well.

  18. guest-avatar

Got signed in but no towers showed on the map.

Before I could switch operators in the map, but now I can't anymore

  20. guest-avatar

All I want to do is locate my nearest cell tower so that I can determine if a signal booster will work for my apartment. Websites recommend this app over and over again. I installed the app and it looks like something from the movie the Matrix and requires the app be able to make phone calls and disable power saving mode. Really!? This seems excessive for locating one stupid tower.

  21. guest-avatar

On my S8 plus and on my note 10 plus data was not accurate showing towers where no tower is (I'm a professional radio tech, so I know where towers are at in my area and even drove to a location it said a tower was, no tower) . Other problem is it would override my screen timeout so it was always on. Tried many things, screen stayed on till I uninstalled this app. That solved the problem. Hope that helps people.

The app is great does what o want and does it well. However, the battery drain is crazy. Which make sense because it use so much GPS. However, I cant find a way to turn the app off, even when not recording it drains my battery just as much. There should really be a way to turn it off besides turning my GPS off. Edit:12/6/18 found out how to kill it, there is a drop down menu in the notifications bar, one option is exit, this makes my experience much better!

  23. guest-avatar

Latest version of the app keeps turning my phones lock screen on over and over again. This causes my battery to rapidly drain. I've had to remove the app from my phone as a result.

very interesting app with a lot of options; however, the stupid ad at the bottom annoys the heck out of me. It reminds me of android from 4-6 years ago. Give me the option to donate, pay some money for the app, etc (non subscription) and i will give 5 stars and re-install. until then i will use other apps.

    Rafael Shumaker

    2019-10-01T15:12:21.901Z

It has a few minor issues. But it's great for showing you exactly what cellular signals you're getting. But my favorite feature is that it shows you where your towers are, on a coverage map, along with where you need to go if you need a signal and don't have one. (The big drawback here is that you have to have a signal to even see the coverage map.)

  26. guest-avatar

Worthless map. Doesn't tell you anything.. wants you to tell it where towers are, when you want to use app to find towers not the opposite. Asinine; I wasn't looking for a pro bono job as a tower hunter!!

  27. guest-avatar

Seemed OK at first. But didn't explain enough to a person with limited operational knowledge. Needed to be able to actually input my carrier. Also, I just wanted to see the closest towers to me to decide which provider I would like to switch to. I am on Total Wireless and it seems to not be a good choice for my locality. I think this app is great for very knowledgeable people but, I think for a newbie, not as much. Great job for who it is designed for. Wasn't a fit for me. 😕

  28. guest-avatar

if the app is running it's pulling all the data it can. I can't make the app idle in the background without it sucking down my battery heavily. Even if i turn off data logging. I like the idea of this app but it needs to be less aggressive with how its done. opensignal does this much better (albiet less detailed data)

  29. guest-avatar

Completely Useless! It's like a toy. It pretends there are cell towers where there are NONE! Itcan NOT locate the towers when you park right next to one. If we, the users, must map them ourselves what's the use? The FCC map, available online, is accurate.

  30. guest-avatar

Awesome for mapping coverage and showing advanced info like the tower ID, sector, band info etc... -1 star because it occasionally forgets my login and have to re login but not a big deal. Awesome app and better than all the other coverage mapping applications like Sensorly or OpenSignal etc...

  31. guest-avatar

Love this, some people need to understand that the app needs to be mapped and it won't be accurate with just one pass, but if you know where the masts are you can add them which I have done it's also fun mapping lol.

  32. guest-avatar

Unable to get a tower lock after it crashed.

  33. guest-avatar

I have tried several similar apps, and Cell Maper was the only one which correctly showed the location of my local cell sites, and which one I was using. Very satisfied.

  34. guest-avatar

The latest version seem to have a bug. You have to turn on GPS just to see which band your phone is connected to. Otherwise, it displays blank data

  35. guest-avatar

Good information but it completely killed my battery in less than an hour. No way to turn it off.

  36. guest-avatar

Database queries do not match up with website. Many towers show on the app that do not show on the website, both 'Low Accuracy' towers settings match.

  37. guest-avatar

Works great but upload is hit and miss experience. No retries on failures, sometimes shows uploading in progress without any data actually uploaded.

  38. guest-avatar

You do not need access to my contacts nor to make phone calls! Uninstall since I cant use it. I have way too many spam calls using unique names in my contacts tricking me sorry not risking it.

  39. guest-avatar

Stopped working all of a sudden and doesn't show any data at all any more.

  40. guest-avatar

Edit: Changed from 1 star to 5 stars as the developer articulated the reasoning behind the requested permission! permission of "make & manage phone calls" is ridiculous!

  41. guest-avatar

Have been using for about two weeks and uploading data but it doesnt seem to be appearing on the map.

  42. guest-avatar

I want to like this app. While I can log in to the website, I cannot log into the app. not sure if it's my account or the app itself.

  43. guest-avatar

Great for finding towers and see what coverage is in the area for your cellphone.

  44. guest-avatar

the first cell mapper app which can show the tower positions correctly.

  45. guest-avatar

Has the best mapping interface of all the cell mapping apps out there.

  46. guest-avatar

Doesn't work with Intel processors phones (ex. ASUS Zenfone 6)

  47. guest-avatar

I blocked the install when it insisted that I allow "game tools" and risky permissions. I don't allow such junk on my phone or computer.

  48. guest-avatar

still getting adds in app after paid for premium yes tried logging off and back in

  49. guest-avatar

Loved this when i was using tmobile now on us cellular no maps or towers

  50. guest-avatar

Doesn't show cell towers on the map, just your location. Useless app

  51. guest-avatar

  54. guest-avatar

It cannot locate Verizon towers at all.

  55. guest-avatar

Can see all providers at once in an area

  56. guest-avatar

Demands permissions without proof it works. App demands to know who I'm calling and where I am, and won't provide proof it works without violating my privacy.

  57. guest-avatar

Find nearest tower + check other providers 👍 perfect

  58. guest-avatar

    Inaccurate tower locations.

Please create a version that has no ads. They're so annoying. In 2017 you mentioned that you could create a pro version. I don't want to be tracked by advertisers. The app has stopped using my uploads so it's not working for me.

Shuts down without warning. Oneplus 6. Edit - there's many apps that behave fine in background. Stop the excuses

  90. guest-avatar

    Hood Good.

  91. guest-avatar

    good

  92. guest-avatar

This app works fine and it gave the technical data fine... but the cell locations are inaccurate, the information it shows while technically correct is wrong, mapping doesn't work. Traveling with the app does nothing towards updating the map. There are better apps for the information you can get from it. If the mapping was accurate it would be worth it, but every tower I looked at is in the wrong location and the app cannot update the map or location on the map. I tried the app again, it is s battery hog and doesn't allow the screen to fully dim and still does not give accurate tower locations

  93. guest-avatar

App was great but is not stable on OnePlus 3T or 6 on Android 8 / 8.1. Stops recording. Only indication is the "Cell" view is blank. Have to exit and restart to get things moving again.

  94. guest-avatar

I had previously tried to use this app on a Galaxy Express in 2013 and the map didn't work. However, it works wonderfully on the S6. Thank you for having accurate locations for the towers!

  95. guest-avatar

Not showing cell towers. Shows little green squares along our road where other cell strength maps display red. Red agrees with my experience as our area has very poor signal. Buying a Samsung signal booster for Verizon . Otherwise 1 or no bars here.

  96. guest-avatar

Best cell tower mapping app I've found. And I have tested a lot of them up to now. Very, very useful information and filter functions.
