Before the recent update I would have rated 5 stars. I loved this app. After the update the home screen widget is ugly and difficult to read. The font for the headlines is uncomfortably small and the pics for the stories are so small as to make them useless. Luckily when you click into the app it is still done properly.

  2. Weldon Young-avatar

    Weldon Young

Thank you. The list of stories can once again appear as a single list within a category. JUST MAKE SURE YOU ACTIVATE THE "COMPACT LAYOUT" option as well, as only 2 stories will appear on your sceen at one time because each would otherwise have an extra large photo.

  3. Richard Duval-avatar

    Richard Duval

How nice to have Canadian and international news delivered in a straightforward, well organized way, without obnoxious adds and pop-ups. Also appreciate being able to save content for off-line reading. Well done and thank you CBC.

  4. WiFi _-avatar

Often I get a news story notification that when clicked, doesn't lead to the news story. Annoying. Second, there is no commenting on stories so it's boring and doesn't hold my attention. Rather use Flipboard.

  5. U. Schi.-avatar

    U. Schi.

Ads are far too voluminous, slow down the app contents to load. Pop up video apps not always have the option to skip after some seconds. You really have to go through this, you even cannot end it by closing the whole app. Completely blocked.

  6. Vinod Sharda-avatar

    Vinod Sharda

Comprehensively Perfect . Refreshes news rapidly .Provides information far more quickly and connects to links faster than expected . The style of news writing with adequate details that are relevant makes reader / subscriber additive to look just for every news at CBS Only!

  7. James Klaassen-avatar

    James Klaassen

I do not like being asked to rate an app. This app continually asks me to provide a reading, so the only way to get rid of that I'm assuming is to do a rating. Thus this rating. Generally the app works well.

  8. Suzanne Blakley-Oaks-avatar

    Suzanne Blakley-Oaks

Easy to use. News is accurately reported and cutting edge research has been brought into the equation for successful results.

  9. Stephen RR-avatar

    Stephen RR

Please get rid of the new side-by-side, staggered display of articles at the top level, or at least make it optional to chose the simpler form there used to be. This new display format is cluttered, adds no value to browsing through available articles and is likely to annoy and put off more readers than those who 'need' such a visual mess. Find something useful to do. Not all changes are good Donkey! A Long-time (at least used to be) Reader

  10. Mark Melnick-avatar

Good, but I don't see much from the regions I selected. I live in the US and this one of my major connections to home.

  11. Alex Schumacher-avatar

It is essential to have the balanced and intelligent reporting that private broadcasters seem unable to provide.

  12. Patrick Jones-avatar

    Patrick Jones

2020-10-07: the latest update now has a front page I find very cluttered, which makes me NOT want to read the articles. Articles also appear to now have an even (slightly) smaller font size than the previous smaller font, and CAN'T be adjusted, making it harder for me to read. The result is that I don't use this app any more. I now use The Guardian for international news, and local papers for local/provincial news. The CBC have made themselves IRRELEVANT for my news consumption.

  13. S I-avatar

    S I

Great app. No issues. The first news app that I open every morning.

  14. Carly Meadows-avatar

    Carly Meadows

I'm American, but I find that CBC often has better news coverage, especially of international news.

  15. Tea Sir Snow-avatar

    Tea Sir Snow

Just not enough variety, it's all one sided alot of the time. And just doesn't have the Canadian feel anymore of being neutral. And plus this is Canadian news, so why not put out some pro Canada news. Not pro foreign countries, what happened to news you can't find anywhere else. Yes talking about something like the vice President debate is important, but you ain't US news, your Canadian! When I get on in the morning I expect to hear about Canada. Canada is not the US, retake your Canadian soul!

  16. Tyson G-avatar

    Tyson G

You know, the app is actually mostly fine. It works, and the journalism is as good as any you will get in Canada. HOWEVER, I find the obnoxious and excessive advertising to be a huge turn off. Considering that the CBC is probably the most well funded news organization in the country given it's publicly funded status, the fact that it rewards us with advertisements longer than a short video clip feels exploitative and disrespectful of the Canadian taxpayers. Somehow YouTube is the better choice.

  17. Patrick Bujold-avatar

    Patrick Bujold

Works well except ads get in the way making it easy to accidentally click them.

  18. Kelly Doty-avatar

    Kelly Doty

So far so good. The app hasn't crashed yet, the ads are obnoxious but are the cost of the world now. I am glad to be able to get news again from over the border, I grew up with tv from Canada (near the border, back in the days of cable or rabbit-ear antennas), which always added a new perspective to the U.S. version of events.

  19. Brendan Wheaton-avatar

    Brendan Wheaton

I have the app pushing notifications for stories which is good, but when I open them to read it I have around a 15% chance of getting the article. Most of the time it's just a white screen on the app and I have to go search for it on my own. That's a pretty glaring issue for a news app and one I don't have with any other application on my phone.

  20. Kenneth Gourlay-avatar

    Kenneth Gourlay

Love CBC, our public broadcaster. Hate the fact that they have to advertise in order to do their job. The app handles ads horribly. You're forced to sit through the ad and if you do decide to go to the site being advertised, when you get back you are forced to sit through it again. Worse, if you see a "live stream" you want to watch, but are not aware that it is over, you have to sit through the ads before you find out. Awful.

  21. Ron Mandryk-avatar

    Ron Mandryk

The CBC has always a good source for the news. I have no complaints about the CBC but I do have one I wish they could give me more video reports then reading them. You have good commentators let them do their job. I find it more satisfying to hear the words then just to read then. I don't know that makes any sense to you but it does to me. Thank you for letting me speak my mind. And keep up the good work CBC.

  22. Simon Rickards-avatar

    Simon Rickards

Please remove the videos. By having a 30 second advert in front of a short two minute clip, indicates that you don't want anyone to watch them in the first place. Also, the video player takes over the entire front of my phone so I can't switch apps or go to the desktop without turning my phone's screen off and then hitting the required button within the 2 second interval that shows these when the phone is turned on again. I want to like this app, but the CBC needs to do better.

  23. bryan dollack-avatar

    bryan dollack

Updated to 2 stars. Plays video ads without warning, often redirects to website for articles. When there are then presented with option to "open in app"!? Amateur stuff. If it wasn't for the quality reporting I would uninstall. Older: Reporting is decent, but can't zoom in on the tiny photos and often have to watch 30 sec of ads to watch a 20 sec clip. Even with location services on it keeps thinking the local coverage I want is from Ottawa... 400+ km away.

  24. A Google user-avatar

    A Google user

The app now frequently plays video ads with sound when clicking on written stories. Not cool. Written stories should get static ads and certainly no disruptive sound. Video ads provide no way to mute, pause or back out. This is rude, disrespectful and inappropriate. I now hit the kill button right away and restart the app *every time*.

  25. A Google user-avatar

    A Google user

Was fast and fairly stable, but autopay video has made it a buggy data hog. Doesn't handle poor Internet connections well. Inconsistent when your device sleeps while reading an article. You may go back to it, or be taken to the homepage. The app is hindered by editorial choices. Many articles pop you out of the app to a browser.

  26. Lars Horner-avatar

    Lars Horner

The app is fine and works ok. However when I tap a new notification I am taken to a blank page with a loading spinner and the article never loads. If I wait an hour or so the notification links work most of the time. This is super annoying and needs to be fixed.

  27. Brent Hewitt-avatar

    Brent Hewitt

Excellent. Easy to navigate, unbiased, honest, informed. CBC has done it again.

  28. Steve Waldman-avatar

    Steve Waldman

The font on the widget is too tiny to be legible after the update.

  29. Cameron Hall-avatar

    Cameron Hall

Would be 5 star rating. Reasons for 1 star. 1) sorting of saved stories reversed and NOT noted in changelog. 2) increasing use of video stories does massive disservice to disabled and rural users. No CC and hard to see video. Rural users have little bandwidth. Addition of selectable dark theme would have gained you two more stars but faults noted above undid that. CBC, you can do much better. Otherwise, excellent app.

  30. Anne N-avatar

    Anne N

Okay but would prefer more international news up front rather than scrolling past minor Cdn stuff to find it. BBC and the Guardian are my first go-to to get World News. Then I come back to CBC for Cdn stuff Maybe there is a different look if your IP address is outside of Canada.

  31. Yness Boily-avatar

    Yness Boily

I love the app but find i have to remove and ad the widget frequently as it stops updating.

  32. Judy K-avatar

    Judy K

It's Great to have Timely, Accurate Canadian and International news, whenever I want it. I think the reporting is Fair and Balanced. I appreciate the format, it allows me to find out how the story has developed and easily find related stories. It just keeps getting better!

  33. Nicola Marr-avatar

    Nicola Marr

I love the CBC. I'm a huge fan of the honest, reliable and reasonable news they offer. I HATE that every single video clip requires that I watch three advertisements. I'm forced to use limited data to watch ad for American companies on this Canadian platform. Therefore I give the content five stars but the app only two.

  34. Robert Kelly-avatar

    Robert Kelly

I open an article in the app. The app tells me that I should open the article in the app. I click on the button offered and it wants me to install the very app that I am at that moment using. This is absolutely ridiculous. I am a huge supporter of the CBC, but, guys, you are making it much harder for those of us who support you with such unnecessary annoyance.

  35. Marg P-avatar

    Marg P

This app gives me up to date news & information which I like!! Also the fact that the stories are updated regularly is an additional attribute!! Too bad it can't be free all the time! However I may consider subscribing when the time comes!!? Keep up the good work!!😊😊

  36. jem morrison-avatar

    jem morrison

To be perfectly honest, I love CBC. The reason it's getting 3 stars is that the autoplay video advertisements where you have to watch the advert is really starting to annoy me. Maybe if they were different ads, but the same as over and over is annoying af.

  37. Vicki Fasciano-avatar

    Vicki Fasciano

I'm sent a notification about "breaking news", open the notification and it takes me to the app itself but never the article. Many times I can't even find the article I was notified about (which was the intention).

  38. Wendell Neubeker-avatar

    Wendell Neubeker

Nice way to see Canadian news. Mobile layout is easy to navigate. Sometimes when switching from other apps the app will refresh and I will lose the story I was on and have to try to find it again. That's my only issue with the app so far.

  39. Anne-Michelle Martin-avatar

    Anne-Michelle Martin

Since the latest update, I'm not able to access any of my saved articles. I click on the "saved" tab & the screen goes white & eventually freezes. It was working fine until last week's update - please fix this!!

  40. Kevin Wilson-avatar

    Kevin Wilson

I opted out of breaking news alerts because there are some "trigger happy" individuals there that call menial things "breaking news". I'm never realy sure what the top story is or the most recent. Covid news is important but it always shows as the page header. I'd rather it be a "button" to click on.

  41. Jamie Munro-avatar

    Jamie Munro

The app has an annoying feature. When you tap on a notification the app launches to a blank display that spins and spins and nothing happens. Then you can't find the story that the notification was referencing.

  42. Elias Loisos-avatar

    Elias Loisos

Would give it 5 stars it it wasn't for the videos, it's always buggy and you are forced through adverts. The advertisement alone is one thing but having it loop over because it doesn't work properly gets annoying. Other than that it's a solid app

  43. Tia vom Scheidt-avatar

    Tia vom Scheidt

Usually love this app for local and international news, but the ads last few months are constant. Pop ads you can't click away and unprompted video ads are the WORST. There are also more ads once you actually reach the article. Clunky and not user friendly.

  44. Kevin Price-avatar

    Kevin Price

Long video ads that you cant skip after 5 seconds or even go back to the main story list from. Only recourse is to close the app and open it again or you are stuck watching the ad for a long time. Soon it will be close the app and uninstall.

  45. Mere LaRocque-avatar

    Mere LaRocque

I read it everyday. It would be great to see articles linked to CBC radio and TV programs as well to give an excellent cross view of subjects. Maybe this already happens? Citing programs would be excellent in order to check out the other sources.

  46. Chris Welch-avatar

    Chris Welch

Now runs unstoppable video ads. I don't mind ads if I can skip over them but app now forces you to watch inane videos with now way to skip or close. Have to close and reopen app to skip over add. Have removed ap and back to reading on web. Very sad it used to be an awesome app.

  47. Paul Shinkle-avatar

    Paul Shinkle

Decent reporting. Poor editing; stories often linger for a long time. Obtrusive ads every single swipe up, and the same ad over and again for months. I appreciate and want a Canadian news perspective. Take some lessons from BBC and Guardian on formatting.

  48. Phil Moruzi-avatar

    Phil Moruzi

The National is ridiculously ad heavy. 12 or 13 ads grouped together every 5 mins or so. Worse than watching it on television. Update 10-16-20: Big difference now. Ads in clusters of 3. Very reasonable.

  49. S Vatcha-avatar

    S Vatcha

Don't like this new double column format - it's too busy, my eyes don't know where to look. I prefer BBC News' format and have switched to reading them first.

  50. Frantz Joassin-avatar

    Frantz Joassin

Good app overall. One annoying thing is when I tap on a news story/article notification that I want to read more about, the app does not open up directly on that piece but instead on the timeline interface where I have to scroll and find it.

  51. Barrington Morrison-avatar

    Barrington Morrison

The CBC continues to meet and exceed the standards of journalistic integrity. As a regular consumer of the audio and visual presentation of the CBC's local and international news I am always impressed with the granular details of the investigative reporting and debates..

  52. A Google user-avatar

    A Google user

Free news with credible journalism is how inwould describe this app. Perhaps a little too left leaning but not over the top. If they could ever become more center that would be ideal.

  53. Harvey Koffman-avatar

    Harvey Koffman

Just about ready to dump this app. While I like Will Arnett, I'm getting awfully tired of having him pop up to flog phones before I get to read an article. It's noisy and disruptive, and just one more move an underfunded CBC has made to make itself less important to me.

  54. Tyson Belliveau-avatar

    Tyson Belliveau

Notifications are broken. Whenever I open a story from a notification, the app opens to the main page, not the story I was notified of.

  55. Sir Willard-avatar

    Sir Willard

Notifications are not limited to interest areas selected and are repetitive thru the day. When sharing news stories, app doesn't put title in message subject line nor allow copying title to paste as subject. Their website is easier and more convenient to use.

  56. Lori Lang-avatar

    Lori Lang

Started using this app this week. I have avoided the news for years for several reasons, one being the perceived biases on 99% of news stories. CBC seems to present the facts and then opinions, leaving it to their audience to form their own opinions.

  57. Cynthia Lake-avatar

    Cynthia Lake

Just about ready to dump this app. Video ads now block ability to back out, so my phone is held hostage for the entire duration of the ad. Uncool. Also way too much American content in Top Stories.

  58. John Wright-avatar

    John Wright

Edit....Now it just doesn't work. Uninstalled. Ads, Ads, Ads. Three ads before showing a news clip....and they claim to be a public broadcaster. I'm uninstalling again.

  59. Adrian Leyds-avatar

    Adrian Leyds

scrolling issues - unable to read entire story - returns to top automatically. Has been like this since I installed the app more than 6 months ago. Ultimately I cannot read an entire story because of this issue which renders the app useless

  60. Scott Cornwell-avatar

    Scott Cornwell

  61. bill granger-avatar

    bill granger

Updated app now freezes when full page ad gets displayed, which happens when you Try to open the second article you wish to read. Full page ads are annoying as it is, even more so when they freeze up.

  62. Keely Kamikaze-avatar

    Keely Kamikaze

When a story headline pops up and I click on it, it doesnt take me directly to the story, it just takes me to the app general where I then have to search for the article I wanted to see.

  63. Doug Taylor-Munro-avatar

    Doug Taylor-Munro

Clean, clear, concise. Actual news content plus some editorial items. Ads are low key and there's no decorations or animations to speak of. Well done.

  64. Tony Chau-avatar

    Tony Chau

Recent updates seem to force ads when opening news articles. This fine and expected however, there should be an option to turn off sound. It should not override the device's main setting turning off sound.

  65. Brandon-avatar

Broken app. I didn't have the app installed, but the "instant app" version kept opening when I was trying to open a news story link, and every time the instant app opened it never went to the story I had clicked a link for, it just went to the home page of the app. Useless.

  66. Will Ashley-avatar

    Will Ashley

The layout is not as good as some other news apps, like the Guardian. CBC seems to need a photo for every article like it's a kids book. However, it seems to be one of the best news sources in Canada.

  67. A Google user-avatar

    A Google user

CBC is so far up Justin Trudeau that his tonsils falling out his mouth. This app perpetuates the government funded mediocrity that has seen CBC lose all major sports and any semblance of a decent news and entertainment format. Makes me wish Canada would open up more of its broadcast channels to the world, or is CBC the best Canada can do?

  68. Edana Brown-avatar

  70. Robert Carpenter-avatar

I like the cbc news but I have vision problems, so this app does not allow me to magnify the text. I have to use a magnify glass.

  71. Neddy Seagoon-avatar

    Neddy Seagoon

Honestly, the app is a little shaky with videos. They also seem to scrape your data and punt out articles that they think you will 'click' on, rather than put together good and relevant, truthful news.

  72. Livia Power-avatar

What can you say? CBC along with BBC is one of the last great news reporting sites.

  80. Keegan Hilsen-avatar

    Keegan Hilsen

Works better than expected for tax dollars. Information is EXTREMELY BIAS boardering on propaganda, but is to be expected from a governmently funded organization. An example is an article written about Maxime Bernier. It stated his claims were false, however there where no data points to refute his claims, though the information Bernier provided was sourced. Great strawman, but not reporting. Get your news from multiple sources and form your own opinions. Needs comment sections for articles.

  81. Lionel Marks-avatar

    Lionel Marks

Good news articles, but the bright red banner at the top with the cbc title is annoying and pains my eyes to look at. If CBC could please make the colour scheme blue, like on their TV show, it would be much more calming.

Like cbc news. Don't like that I have to look for the national. Should be a matter of pride and have it "BOOM", right there. Also. Why no 24 hr news service on this app? Your a federally funded and rescued agency. Why do we not get the news service free on here? I feel ...un-valuable.

  86. Nick Borcic-avatar

    Nick Borcic

Truly awful app. It's unacceptable that a crown Corp that gets funding from the feds is jamming video ads down our throats before letting us read the articles. Not to mention that you can't skip the ads. No other media company in the private sector is doing this, and they don't get funding.

  87. Darren Cross-avatar
