Aiyappan also called Sastavu or Sasta, the offspring of Shiva and Vishnu. Lord Ayyappa is the presiding deity of Sabarimala temple. The name "Sri Ayyappan" is used as a respectful form of address in the Malayalam and Tamil languages. The Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil sentence Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa can be translated as, "Oh Ayyappa!". The purpose of Lord Ayyappan’s birth on Earth was the annihilation of the demoness Mahishi who by her severe penances had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that she could be killed only by the son created out of the union of Vishnu (Hari) and Siva (Haran). After his earthly sojourn as the prince of the kingdom of Pandalam, Lord Ayyappan retired to Mount Sabari (Sabarimala). The King RajaSekhara of Pandalam then built a temple there to honor Lord Ayyappan and Lord Parashurama installed the murthi of Lord Ayyappan. As Sri Ayyappa represents both Vishnu and Shiva in one Divinity, He is worshipped both as Protector and Deliverer.
