Convenient to find words with kanji that you haven't learned by drawing instead of typing. You can also download your own lists directly into Anki files to practise on Ankidroid. A further slight improvement could be made by adding the option of putting a question mark instead of a kanji character in a word to find the possible word. E.g. ?習 might then suggest 練習、学習、演習、講習、etc.

  2. Valeriy Zlatov-avatar

    1) word list doesn't have order options, I have to scroll down manually every time just to see the new words I added, which is pretty frustrating 2) please make it so that I can access my word list from the start screen, for learners it's the most important feature after dictionary

  3. PaperRaceCar-avatar

Got it yesterday, very impressed so far. Very helpful at the intermediate level for translating individual kanji quickly while gaming in Japanese, especially when i don't know the pronunciation.

  4. Ruu Hime-avatar

Sentences in japanese don't work. I've downloaded the japanese examples and marked them to be shown, but every time I look a word up the app shows me a message to download the sentence pack again.

  5. Rodel San-avatar

as a Japanese learner, Its really useful app. It would be a great if you add a feature that can see the synonyms and antonyms of the word. The flashcards is awesome too. Please add a button in the flashcard to see the kanji.😊

  6. x throughStars-avatar

Bad Edit: The reason was the moment that I've used the gallery, I have to pay it immediately. It would be nice if there's some trial version. Let me change my rating now.

  7. Vins Smokey-avatar

now with flashcards functions. superb features update! I've been using Yomiwa for 4 years now. awesome developer always improving this great apps. love it!

  8. Jamie .L-avatar

I use it on a daily basis. The ability to draw kanji is especially useful.

Great app with only little flaws. Definitley worth the price!

  10. Arun Subbiah-avatar

Wonderful app... without some bugs experience will be awesome

  11. Xuan Ly-avatar

Fabulous app - perfect for studying Japanese through reading manga

  12. Ezra Goodcat-avatar

App works great generally, the recognition seems to be better than google. It loads quickly and gives detailed information on readings for kanji. I experienced a bug that caused me to lose the premium features so I ended up paying for the app over again but as you can see below the developers are responsive and helpful.

  13. CYGAL-avatar

Wow. Fast browser, huge dictionary, and multiple libraries. Synonyms, conjugations, example sentences. WOW. Typing, writing, radicals, all are here. There's also ocr too (paid). Free version is already great, and I'm looking forward to buy this app for full experience.

  14. Bart Brzakala-avatar

Love this app. I like the clear way it displays stroke order and animation. Also the kanji lookup lets you finish drawing the kanji without giving you results as soon as you lift your finger off the screen like most apps do. The ocr image recognition is done nicely as well.

  15. DreamyAbaddon-avatar

I love the app. First day free trail trying out camera kanji recognition feature and I'm in love. But I can't find where to pay for it. Where is the Buy option? I don't want to wait for my free trail to end. I want to pay for it now and keep app forever. Lol

  16. Samuel kärvemo-avatar

I use this when I find Kanji and words that I can't find the phonetics for. This app is a great too l for that! The app comes with a bug that has been apparent in many years on all devices I've used it on, however. The bug happens when you minimize the app and reopen it a few times. When I then try and write or draw something in the field above , it won't let me. To clear the bug, I need to change to another tab in the app and get back to where I was. Other than that, it's great!

  17. Kv Kr-avatar

Used it only for the dictionary. They also have the example in sentence which is very helpful for learning. But it had to be match word or uncomplete word to get the result, where if there are typos or wrong pronounce it give no result. My solution is if give no result, then add suggestion.

  18. Jim Wang-avatar

Full Version review: Nice app. In browser, definitions function is 70% of the time either defective (definition is all the way up above selected vocab) or non-functional. (Selecting vocab, nothing shows up). That being said, furigana function is a lifesaver; plus, when definition function actually works, it helps a ton as well.) Please fix browser...

  19. Osman Ceylan-avatar

Just downloaded it and it seems rather useful. Though it crashes in browser when click for definitions. I'll update it to a 5 star if that is fixed.

  20. Little Kawaii Cherry-avatar

    Little Kawaii Cherry

The camera function doesn't exactly work. They make you pay after a few days because of the free trial. It couldn't even pick up my kanji. That was right in front of the camera. It said it looks like this kanji but it wasn't and it made no sense whatsoever. This app will definitely get the biggest and fattest 1 star I've ever given to an app.

  21. Sean Lee-avatar

Great when it works, but has a fatal flaw, it thinks it can be the default application for everything, from opening web pages to installing apks. It can't be turned off and it's very perplexing. I hope this is fixed because the only way for me to install apk files is to uninstall yomiwa.

  22. Ryotaro Wright-avatar

Very good. Not the best for phrases, but it helps with gaining an I sight on what certain words mean.

Thats a nice app but I cant make a payment. Please support. Everytime I press on pay button, the app is exit. So annoyed.

It's very excellent ,,, this one is very good for those who want to master Japanese kanji symbols,, but you must be familiar with Japanese character (katana) and (hirigana)

  25. Johnathan Andersen-avatar

    Johnathan Andersen

Costs just under $5 for the OCR capabilities, but there's a free trial and it's way better than Google Translate for a Japanese learner.

  26. Farhad Mustafa-avatar

Perfect, I can select text in my web browser then select Yomiwa in the little menu that pops up to instantly see the definition! Now, if only more apps supported text selection...

  27. Jonathan Lennox-avatar

Really solid app. Hugely helpful in my Japanese studies. The best tool I've found for it so far.

  28. Zero k-avatar

Why didn't I discover this app before. God its good. Devs of this apps are genious. Im thinking of upgrading the app but the detection system is kinda messy while I'm using free trial.

  29. Robert Ramirez-avatar

I installed it but can this thing not open pdfs? How do I export words and their context sentences yomichan-style to anki?

  30. sdf sdf-avatar

Surprisingly accurate in reading kanji from the camera.

  34. Maria Andrews-avatar

Excellent app for help with Japanese!

  35. Reni-avatar

Love this app, very excited about the new flashcard feature! Just tested it today and it's great I can narrow down the examples/definitions to make it simpler. Only one suggestion: is it possible to include audio for the flashcards? Sometimes I want to test my listening without looking at the word. Thank you!!

  36. loves tereso-avatar

i am studying nihongo and this app really been a great help to me. thank you so much for making it easier on my part in my studying.

  37. Antonio Honda-avatar

    Exceptionally easy to use

  38. Aldo Villegas-avatar

Very good for the price, it made my life in japan easier to understand with the scan feature, it could use a bit of polishing, but pretty great nonetheless

  39. Fer Jongen-avatar

Have been using other dictionaries, however this program has some wonderful features that makes it fun to use. When copying a sentence into the search it analyses the sentences in its parts. It then takes every kanji and explains its purpose. I also like the draw feature, that let's you pracrise writing kanji.

  40. David Hogins-avatar

The image recognition is pro only

  41. Rowena Morilla-avatar

Great app!Really help my studies. Highly recommended.

  42. Kaylina Parmley Ryan-avatar

    Kaylina Parmley Ryan

I love this app. I use the OCR feature most. Sometimes the camera will not recognize the kanji on the first try, but if you are patient and pay attention you will get it. Best of all, you can start words you don't know and create a list that you can then export to Anki as flashcards. When I first downloaded this, I got a bit confused on how to use the app so emailed the help team. They replied the same day and solved my problem. I highly recommend this app!

  43. Logithink Earthling-avatar

    Logithink Earthling

Recognizes large array of words. Convenient with kanji character, hiragana and examples. Great app!

  44. Mona Mansour-avatar

I love this app but I think it was actually better before the update which put the suggestions underneath the kanjis... it used to show the suggestions for idioms and sayings on the top as you wrote them so you didn't have to write the whole thing... now it shows at the bottom and I have to scroll down to see it with, when you have a tiny screen, isn't so convenient... it would be perfect if the suggestions could be put back at the top!

  45. Cardboard-avatar

Kanji recognizer is better than some of the apps I've tried. There's a some kind of social network, where u can ask kanji you can't find. Paid user can use image and video recognizer. There's web browser, "Today list" kanji. The history doesn't work quite well, most of them is not recorded and there's no dropdown when we tap on the search bar. By far, this is one of the most complete Japanese dictionary app.

  46. Jason McCrory-avatar

This is by far the best app I've ever gotten to help in my Japanese studies. All the other alternatives I've ever tried are clunky and almost never accurate. Yomiwa is not only almost always correct as long as you can get a decent picture, it's dictionary is fantastic as well. It's not uncommon for me to be unable to find a particular word (or slang) in my other dictionaries or on Google and Yomiwa has come through for me there on many occasions. Best $5 I've ever spent.

  47. Hope Maguire-avatar

This has great options, you can look up a word using English, or romaji, or Japanese script. And there are so many comprehensive answers provided. There's a great option for drawing kanji to help find the one you're after. I particularly like that all these great search results are available offline. I've been using this app to help translate in class and it's been wonderful. Thanks for making it!

  48. Martin Simpson-avatar

I don't review often, but i felt urged to do so, based on my positive experience. For me, after using so many Japanese dictionary apps, have completely fallen for this one. It's super streamlined, the UI is fantastic, the examples are relevant... I could say more, but I'm so busy using the app right now, that i have no time. Thank you!!

  49. John Stagmeier-avatar

Amazing app that fits all of my translation and learningneeds. It is incredibly handy when I don't know exactly how to say a certain kanji or write it in hiragana, because I can draw the kanji and Yomiwa will tell me the multiple translations and readings. Overall, it is one of the most helpful translation apps that I have used and it works with multiple languages!

  50. Richard K MuseVid-Metal RVREVO-avatar

    Richard K MuseVid-Metal RVREVO

kinda disappointed. i have a lot of kanji or whatever from interviews in magazines, posters, CD/DVD i need translated. this app promised to do that. however, the app only concentrates on verbs, and ignores nouns and adjectives. placenames no problem. but not enough info of what the ppl are saying. you claim to be the best. sadly no.

  51. LittleBabyBat-avatar

I really love this app! While learning japanese, I have encountered many kanjis that I don't know (I'm a brutal beginner). Thanks to this app, I'm able to find the meaning of the kanjis that I don't know and how to write it in hiragana or katakana. The search engine is good as well. You can write in hiragana and find the kanji and the draw and puzzle search works perfectly. Sometimes, you find the right kanji without knowing the stroke order. I will definetley buy the camera and picture feature

  52. Melody Pan-avatar

Great app, but now I can't highlight words from Chrome and look them up anymore.

  53. Arseny Q-avatar

This is exactly the app I was looking for. Switching from iOS device, I really missed the imiwa dictionary. That app was just perfect. Unfortunately it is only available for iOS. The main feature I missed is the text analyser. And this app has an even better analyser then imiwa. In imiwa romaji are used to represent reading if a kanji. Here furigana is used, which is better. Also in this app one can get a translation pop ap of an unknown word when one touches it. No need to scroll through a long list of words you already know. This is a better app for an advanced user who doesn't know all the kanji yet, but who can speak already.

  54. Andre Lim-avatar

Great dictionary very intuitive looking for kanji and using it while browsing japanese sites. Your mileage may vary in apps as not all of them supports "quick" kanji look up while selecting(EX. memrise). On the other hand The Optical Character Recognition (OCR) they use for the camera works most of the time but when there is furigana it struggles to recognize the kanji. So you should not use this app solely for the kanji recognition. Using it as a dictionary, and aid for study is were it shines.

  55. Nick Bushell-avatar

The app's expansive dictionary and many example sentences are helpful and the camera recognition of characters functions well and is very useful. The ability to make word lists and an integrated browser make the app a great study aid. However, the handwritten character recognition program is seriously flawed. The app repeatedly failed to correctly identify handwritten kanji, even simple ones such as 力、木、大、三 and 日. Regardless of size, neatness and stroke order, handwritten characters were misidentified. The suggested characters included seemingly random letters of the alphabet, numerals and kana. Changing the character detection algorithm from fast to accurate and back again did not seem to have any noticeable effect. While the app does contain many useful features, this issue is in dire need of a fix.

  56. HighTech Fangirl-avatar

    HighTech Fangirl

I think overall its a good idea, but its really hard to figure out how to use. Also it talks about Chinese when you search for stuff which is confusing. I'm trying to learn Japanese because I hope to go to Japan someday, and I thought this app would help, but it really needs an introduction, because its just hard to figure out what does what and why the first result is always about Chinese and things like that.

  57. A Google user-avatar

I have to keep resetting the camera capture box size and position each time i open the app. I dont need to translate entire pages, just a word every once in a while. I want the box to remain small and at the top of the screen for maximum accuracy when attempting to get one word from within a paperback page. Not worth $5.99 as it is now, less trouble to draw the kanji.

  58. Mark Newall-avatar

Simply didn't work. I tried to learn to read Japanese myself so can only imagine how difficult an app like this must be to write. Unfortunately, the first time I used it was on a menu and the first items were Mountains, If, Reprise, Indifference and Woodpecker. I tried several more times but it never got any better than that. Thanks for trying but it was no practical value for me.

  59. Helen K-avatar

Purchased this software 8/30/2019. To translate Japanese using the camera feature. Does not recognize kanji words/ phrases in a Japanese sentence...only individual kanji. Thus, it's useless in translating signs, menus, etc. using the camera freeze feature. The dictionary is incredibly limited unlike Aedict which has a vast library and allows typing/searching in English and Japanese, and a host of other useful language features for free!!!

  60. Rica Evanz-avatar

Great but 2 thing i want is when i write kanji in 2character Or more there will be choices ,However the choices popping below is for 1kanji character only and doesnt support the searching for 2or more kanjis. Second,When ill search for second word sometimes it doesnt pop up maybe its lagging Or the first word stuck thats why it cannot search the 2nd word i

  61. Syl-avatar

Does not work for me... Originally got it to try and read video game titles on their label. It was only able to recognize kanjis that are written in perfect computer format (clear black lines), and even those ones were only recognized properly 1 time out of 4. If there was a bit of colour or if the typo was a a bit funky it did not react at all. Then I tried the drawing kanji recognition. I drew the ta in Tanaka (the kanji for field). It gave me the kanji for exit....

  62. H M-avatar

The hardest part of switching from apple to android was losing the imiwa app. After months of searching, this is my choice. Text analyser for looking up many words at once is essential! It puts this app above the standard lot. Everything else seems up to par. A little lacking in example sentences.

  63. Smritiman Barua-avatar

    Smritiman Barua

Hi I am from Kolkata. I am a student of Japanese language. I downloaded a lots of apps and OCR apps to read my book and tested. But Yomiwa app is going beyond my expectations for his amazing features. Best OCR with Vocabulary, Suggestions, Furigana, Char Correction features etc. Every features are just great. I love to use this app.

  64. Roland Kwan-avatar

The dictionary itself is fine. Works as intended. I don't need the extra bells and whistles. However the Kanji writing input is atrocious. Google translate Kanji input is spot on even with some dodgy looking Kanji but yomiwa Kanji input sometimes doesn't suggest my intended Kanji even if it looks fairly good.

  65. Gly Lapig-avatar

Hard to use. Didn't meet my expectation. I've installed this before but uninstalled it because it was hard to use. It says ''large number of example sentence''. I thought I can search sentences using the search box but no. Only for words. Tangorin is much better than this.

  66. Tiiu O-avatar

Great app! There's some minor inconveniences like having to fiddle with the text box size for it to read some characters right, but it's tremendously helpful and the accuracy is high as long as you work with it.

  67. Alan Wilson-avatar

A brilliant app. Very good quality translation. I'm learning Japanese using the app in conjunction with Duolingo. I now feel confident enough to use it when I go to Japan. Thanks.

  68. Jarrod Jarrod-avatar

Great app! I just started living in Japan and this app helped me learn new words and Kanjis every day! Whenever I'm on the train, I just whip my phone out, look for Kanjis written on posters then start writing them in this app. I especially love that it also has the other forms of a word.

  69. Hamad Gamal-avatar

Thank you so much for making this app and adding requested features , I have few suggestions again, I want to be able to add examples to a favorite list and exporting examples also without hiragana, thank you again.

  70. Gozo Maniac-avatar

nice app with good handwriting recognition which has been missing for android. unfortunately it seems data-heavy: sometimes crashes, and slow reaction leads to touchscreen purgatory from time to time. one mistake found in 2weeks heavy use.

  71. Ryder Dale Walton-avatar

    Ryder Dale Walton

I love the app. It makes it so easy to look up words and kanji. I have had trouble recently with the draw function crashing the app however. That is the only reason it isn't a five star app for me.

  72. Johnny Buchanan-avatar

Was looking for an App that would utilize the camera turns out its behind a pay wall... I tried to merge the symbols of the app to get my grandpa's old WW2 symbol, but to no avail...

  73. Ty Mentha-avatar

Not a full five stars because, after the update, the part of the app where you could draw kanji isn't working on my device. Otherwise a great app; I use Yomiwa for homework help, reference, etc. It's very useful.

  74. Gianni Degli Esposti-avatar

    Gianni Degli Esposti

Amazing app! Contains basically all the kanjis you can think of, even 旧字体, and tells you the JLPT level and japanese school grade for each kanji. Moreover, the drawing recognition software works much better than i expected. Five stars out of five.

  75. JM Parato-avatar

The app is a very good one but I can't use the "read-back" feature. Keeps on asking me to download and install a voice synthesis which I already have.

  76. FeasK-avatar

Really good app! Perfect to help for many words! This application is really useful to learn some new words and also how to write some Kanji. 👍 Some translation are missing for some other language or are not really appropriate.

  77. J. Irvin Hardy-avatar

I love the translations as they are so much better than google translate, however, the app causes my entire phone to freeze fairly regularly. once this bug is fixed this app will deserve 5 stars.

The latest update is incredibly great. I've been using Yomiwa for more than 2years. Never dissatisfied and 1 of the impressiveness of it is that the over the years the updates are majorly improving it. Totally not half-assed apps. Thanks

Useless there's google translate for the dictionary. All I wanted was the camera and you have to pay for it. "It's how we keep the app running" you say. Well, I hope people deleting your app keeps it "running" cuz I downloaded it for 3 secs and oops, gone.
