ViewRanger failed on multiple occasions, so I'm glad I don't rely on technology and had paper OS maps where most needed. Firstly, downloading OS maps was a time-consuming and fiddly process. I wanted OS maps for the whole of Cornwall and part of Devon, yet rather than being able to download maps for whole counties or areas (south west) like some map apps allow, I had to zoom in each time to download around 10 separate maps, and wait for each one to finish downloading before I could download the next. Each time a map finished downloading, the map centred on Keswick in the Lake District, so I had to keep scrolling back to south west England and align and zoom the map for the next section of area. It must have taken me half an hour or more to download the maps. The app told me each map had successfully downloaded, yet when I came to use the maps, large sections of tiles had failed to download. I found a WiFi connection and downloaded some of the same sections again, and this time ViewRanger did report some tiles hadn't downloaded. I downloaded some maps again and randomly checked a few areas, which seemed okay. Only when I was out and needing the maps, I found some tiles hadn't downloaded for a second/third time. Other times, it seemed tiles hadn't downloaded, but if I zoomed out and in a few times, eventually the tiles would display. The negatives are a shame, as where the tiles had downloaded properly, following the maps was easy and intuitive enough (I didn't try any extra features like following or creating routes). I was quite looking forward to having the whole of the UK available in OS maps, but I've cancelled my subscription.

Great app - but has traps to make you accidentally spend huge amounts of money. I just went to download a route and as I tapped "download route" the screen switched to show "purchase national map" for £109 and of course I clicked this. Luckily it failed but on other occasions it's made me buy maps I didn't intend to buy.

Fantastic app. Great for getting me walking in areas I've not been before and am not confident in. So far absolutely faultless and every walk has been fantastic, well guided and any instances of going off course are clearly noted with the GPS feature. Will be buying the years membership as it is well worth the £2 a month, but even the free features of the app have been brilliant so far.

  4. Craig-avatar

Some good things and some bad the good are you can plot routes and get a good idea of how long it will be and you can get to see other routes in an gives a rough estimate of speed and ascent and descent and time taken.theres a few different map types not sure if paying the premium for os maps is worth it though.the main bad point is it doesn't track your route properly it will make a straight line when signal gets for this point alone I only give it 2 stars

  5. Nick Mandeville-avatar

    Nick Mandeville

I have used this app on hikes from a few days to 3 months in mountains from Europe to South America.Premium maps can be expensive for very long hikes but the Viewranger landscape map seems to have trails accurately marked and are easily downloaded. Recording tracks is useful for making routes, geeking out or even escaping the way you came when it all goes wrong.

  6. Michael Klas-avatar

We love going for walks and hikes on our country and city breaks and this app is great. The tiniest paths and shortcuts are on the map in amazing detail. We've used the app in Spain, UK, France,... There's loads of tracks and trails available! Good stuff.

  7. Bren Hol-avatar

Its a million times better than Memory Map that I've used for 15 years! Yes the Premium OS maps really need some more resolution but it's no different from most others I've tried, I've only had it a couple of days and already I've created several walks on my PC and sent them to my mobile ready for the weekend. Using it yesterday it was easy, plotted my track even with my mobile in standby and instantly has your position when you wake it, plus it has a lot of features especially with the reasonably priced £24 premium package. Just wish I'd discovered it years ago!

  8. David-avatar

This app has a lot of features and settings. One thing I can't find is the Map legend. Are ViewRanger planning on adding this to the app? Could also make the plot a route better so you can zoom out and in more easily without adding extra wide point accidentally and be able to move the map around.

  9. Stuart Sarkela-avatar

Great resource. I use it every time I hike or bike. I like the record of . A few times it has helped me on off trail walks, finding my game cameras, or navigating on cloudy days.

Been using viewranger for years now, fantastic app, while ive been out walking on the mountains and fells. Ive helped others using the OS APP and people with there papermap and compass. Who have been lost. Sending them on there way on the correct routes. Would give it more stars if it let me.

The apps brilliant in so many ways. So accurate and works in flight mode if you download the map area. So good for Scotland. My only criticism is that I sometimes struggle to find functionality that I know is there without spending a couple mins looking.

  12. Newton Heath-avatar

Best Digital Navigation software for serious outdoor enthusiasts. Offline mode as never let me down and I spend serious time in the mountains. Set up right this app as no competitors.

I created a 7 mile walk using footpaths and bridleways. The app in conjunction with the website using my laptop. It worked well and synced ok, I used my Google account to log in. I have just finished the walk and am happy with the outcome.

Great app. Wish its had more notifications from my watch or speech controls as i have to keep checking it but generally works fine. Too many paid walks online wish there were more, most of mine are adapted from books and transferred

    Steve Dorman

Great app, with very easy route plotting, easy to read on the move, very stable doesn't take loads of data to run. Others do the postcode routing well but this is the best for walking, green Laning etc, everything off grid.

  16. Liz Bailey-avatar

Excellent app. Seems very accurate when using in Australia. Can plot a hiking route and find it easy to follow when out in bush. Particularly good in areas without graded tracks so you don't get lost!

  33. Mike Jackson-avatar

    Mike Jackson

I genuinely loathe myself for down marking this wonderful app as I've used it for many years with great success, but recently useful features have been removed. I also totally agree with Tim Mitchell 3.8.20..... OS mapping is very poor resolution. I have to keep an OS subscription running alongside for this. I've emailed Augmenta but response is not encouraging. I'll cease recommending the app now sadly. It will be interesting what the recent merger brings. Shame.

  34. Tim Mitchell-avatar

    Tim Mitchell

Good navigation app, disappointing resolution. Purchased for access to OS Maps. When you zoom in on a location the graphics resolution is poor. Ok for overall viewing but not close up. Disappointing really as you get full OS mapping so why you cant zoom in doesn't make sense. I noticed quickly enough to cancel my subscription within the seven day free trial. I want to like the app but sadly poor quality loses it for me.

  35. Alyn Wallace-avatar

    Alyn Wallace

Long time user and huge fan of the app but it has been unusable the past month or so. Squares are incredibly slow to load or don't at all, even in good signal. The search function no longer works. Not sure what's going on. Using a Samsung S20 with latest firmware and latest version of app.

I've been using the free version for a few years now for occasional use. I download the map tile before I leave home (avoiding resolution issues in oiur signal areas) and maybe a walk or two. It hasn't let me down. Thanks developers!

  38. Green Apple-avatar

    Green Apple

There's this "my home" map which shows all my routes and tracks. Pretty useful to see where I've been. I also like the premium version because it allows me to plan my route and the line just snaps on the road. No more manual clicking. I know I can get this snap on the road thing for free in other apps, but I just felt I need to support this app because I like it, and it's cheap.

  39. Jean Murphy-avatar

    Jean Murphy

I use this app mainly to plot routes for family hikes where there could be 3 generations in the group. Easily seeing distance, gradient, total ascent is helpful. An improvement I would like to see is a file system so that your own routes could be categorised as the sort feature doesn't do enough.

  40. Sam Masson-avatar

    Sam Masson

Love this app. I use it for mountain biking, cycle touring and hiking. It's great, you can plan a route on the app or on the website. It can also track your route and it allows you to export the tracking data for use in Strava or to create a route plan. The free maps are good but you can also buy OS maps. The maps can be downloaded for offline use. I can't think of an extra feature it needs.

  41. Kiere Luurs-avatar

    Kiere Luurs

Currently I am very disappointed by my latest track recordings. Apparently by setting it to power save mode, it became a MESS. It missed out a lot of points, locations were wrong, it even had points backtracking my path several times. But also in continuous mode I have had serious problems, where tracking skipped large parts. Though that may be caused by the circumstances of GPS reception and my phone. Besides all that I was pretty happy with its functionality, as far as I use it (tracking and map reading). It can load free offline Openstreetmaps which are pretty usable for my outdoor activities. Though as last criticism it can be pretty frustrating to find out again how the hell to download them. It has other quirks, like finding out one has to export a track on top of saving it to make it useful anywhere else.

Would love it if MGRS was an option for coordinates

  43. Orblocator L-avatar

    Orblocator L

Love this app for preplotting routes and recording tracks. I use it on my watch to follow routes. I would like to suggest that the arrow for direction be a little ahead on the route so you know a turn is coming. I have missed a turn and had to come back a few times. Everything else I enjoy what you have done. Edit. Fiund setting for advanced waypoint direction. Increased it. Thanks.

  44. Allan Taylor-avatar

    Allan Taylor

Was ok, but has stopped recording track. Does record time. Uninstalled, reinstalled. Makes no difference. Uninstalling permanently now as it is a waste of time. Developer made contact and suggested various actions, but none worked. Might be an android update problem. When it's fixed and the app works, I'll come back to it as it was really good. Issue seems to have been fixed. Cautiously optimistic. Will go to five stars when I'm convinced.

  45. Mark Warner-avatar

    Mark Warner

The best maps you can get, and at modest price. Well integrated with app. Great functionality- track walk, create routes, use routes of others, export/import .gpx files for walks. Very good support. I had developer function "don't keep activities" on which stopped tracking of walks. Got instant response at weekend to request for help. They put their finger on problem immediately. Now works completely. Got other advice at same time. Will convert to premium.

  46. Susan Gibson-avatar

I love this app. Great mapping of the route you take. Seems very accurate. Lots of free walks and more if you want to pay. Thanks!

  47. Jonathan Lees-avatar

Fantastic app. I recently switched due to issues with another app crashing when I most needed it. Viewranger works perfectly with offline maps and no phone signal. Also skyranger helps with navigation too when needed. Although I've not used them yet but the routes look great. If you're like me and coming here from another well know UK maps app I highly recommend.

  48. Shona Thrall-avatar

    Shona Thrall

I love this app, never get lost on my runs, can plot the route in advance, the only thing I struggled with was dropping plot points, couldn't seem to drop them first time, but I've figured out you have to tap the bottom triangle of the cursor and it drops first time. Much better than any other app out there for plotting routes off road.

  49. John Wright-avatar

    John Wright

Best app I have found for actually using as a map. Circle around your location, orienteering style, means you don't have a stupid pink arrow obscuring the map details right where you are (like a certain other app). Also very clear if GPS has or has not found your location, unlike some other apps which just show you in the wrong place until GPS finally locks.

  50. Andreea Giuros-avatar

    Andreea Giuros

Great app for hiking and backpacking. I first used it on the Peaks of the Balkans in Montenegro/Albania and we had no problem whatsoever finding our way. I now use it regularly on hikes in the Alps (southern Germany and Austria) and so far navigation and trails have been accurate. The only detail I miss on the maps is info on huts (the name or if it's "public" aka we can get food there). I even purchased the Pro version because I really like the app and want to support the developers.

  51. Shawn Tse-avatar

    Shawn Tse

I use it exclusively for hikes. Pros: - Can import GPS tracks (.GPX) I've previously downloaded - follow a route and warns me if I'm off route - can download offline maps ahead of time in case I lose cell reception, I still got maps. - can send my position to loved ones Cons: - can't edit my recorded hikes for when I forget to stop recording at the end of a hike and I get in the car 🤣 - Sometimes it gets killed by my phone for battery saving and doesn't record large parts of my track

  52. Jim Campbell-avatar

    Jim Campbell

ViewRanger is ridiculously easy to use. The ViewRanger Landscape map has very good coverage everywhere I've used it, from the Dolomites to the Kimberley. I recently had the pleasure of showing a 70yo friend how to use it in Lombardy and within a week saw his track appear on a 20km circuit in the hills. Highly recommended!

  53. Andrew Mawer-avatar

    Andrew Mawer

Fantastic app overall. Only problem I have found is when importing gpx routes then all waypoints are set as poi. This is fine until it comes to deleting the track off the map as it leaves the poi's on the map which then have to be deleted individually, (often 100+ poi's). Haven't found a way to get round this as of yet.

  54. Caroline Pattinson-avatar

    Caroline Pattinson

I really enjoy it, but it lacks something to favourite routes. If I search for a route and find a few for future I can download free ones or pay for others I may never use, I just want to add them to a list I can come back to.

  55. Steve Brown-avatar

Amazing free app for plotting routes for cycling, fell running. Also great that you can download the maps properly onto the phone for navigation. Works internationally. Amazing. Don't waste your money on the OS app unless you want to go off the path. Or fire some artillery

  58. Sam Braddock-avatar

    Sam Braddock

Very good the the OS maps integration is seamless and very good a tracking routes and helping to follow themits reasonably easy to use if a little clunky and outdated UI One real thing I would love to have in the app is ability to search though my points that have been placed by me as I have the rv points for my local Mountain Rescue team logged and it would be brilliant to be able to bring them up without searching though the map

  59. Davide Avagnina-avatar

    Davide Avagnina

It's a very great app, the tracking is very well done and the battery is not impacted too heavily. Research of routes is a bit difficult, I hope it will be improve soon by adding starting valley and touched peaks in the route description, for example.

  60. Will Adams-avatar

    Will Adams

Great app. What would make it perfect for me is to have a compass overlay on the map you get on wear os device like you do on the phone app. Often I'm not following a route saved to my watch but just open the map on the watch to check my location.

  61. Mat D-avatar

    Mat D

Broken interface. Zooming out with two fingers is broken. When trying to create custom route and zooming in, it zooms in on the last created route point so you have to move the map again back to where you were which makes it really hard to create custom map. Uninstalling.

Ten embedded trackers in this app? The good news, this is fewer then the similarly rated AllTrails. If you want to escape to the great outdoors... it seems you must concede to bringing Big Brother with you.

2 fingers zooming in/out sometime works but mostly doesn't. If you haven't got access to a connected laptop/desktop to preplan & export/import a route, forget the idea of plotting a route using this app, the function is there but it's just plain horrible to use. Seems to keep a good lock on your position when on standby/screen off. Good for battery life. I like the "off course" warning that can be set to sound when you stray off your planned route by a distance of your choice.

Always asks for money (upgrade) for offline mode, you never know what you get. And it does not explain what limitations you have before you subscribe. For $5 you get only one the very small detailed map or larger which does not have details. Very slow download process. I downloaded based on good review but it was misleading. You get your surprises when there is no connectivity. Certainly not suitable if you want to go for a trip but do not know precisely where. Spent too much time find limits

Great app. I create my own routes and use it frequently to hike. Simple to use though it does require the use of a laptop and mouse to draw a route. It's also brilliant in recording a particular route with distance and altitude completed. It certainly works in the UK and Italy. Highly recommended. Only minus, once a route is saved, it doesn't allow me to name it so it sits there with the date it was created. I can live with that but it would be good if the file name could be edited.

  127. Arin Ferguson-avatar

    Arin Ferguson

Amazing app, never lets me down. Relatively easy to use, I'm sure theres more to it if I take the time to look. I'd prefer a little more topography but I think you pay for that level so I can't complain. Its perfect for what I need and helps me a lot, which is great because despite a navigation qualification I am terrible at navigating. Great app, would recommend.

Love the free walks sent to me on a regular basis, especially as a few 3-4 mile ones are included which is just right for us! Having done a couple (which were really nice) I've got the hang of the map reading (I think!) And no ads!👍Would recommend trying the free version, don't think will ever upgrade to paid one as wouldn't get that involved, but hope there are enough people who do to keep the app going.

I love this app. I plan all my hiking routes on their website, sync & download it to my phone and off I go! It's extremely accurate, and paired with an annual OS Maps subscription it's got me out of some tricky spots, even in remote areas of the Lake District (UK). Always carry and map & compass as a backup if you're in the wild, just in case your phone plays up. Awesome app.

I download this app and then found out it "Needs" access to all my photos so deleated it. F the f off! The app does not "need" access to anything on my phone accept the gps, when i give the app permission. I would pay for this app without having it demand stupid permissions but as it is does i will go without. Once the change mentioned below by the developer happens then i will be downloading this app.

So far so good Free trial going well. You can download offline maps before you head out so you have map if phone signal is lost . Plenty of routes to download. Very easy to track your walk and create a route to upload. The 3D fly over is a great feature. Having the map rotate to the direction of travel is a feature I like. Much better than OS map app I was using( resolution is not as good as OS map app though which is a shame. )

  133. Josh-avatar

You can only save one offline map for a small area (I went on a trip to three different areas with limited data coverage; being able to save them all prior to the trip would have been nice. I've got 128gb of storage, why limit maps at all? Of the three places I went, I only found one trail route where there were about a dozen trails. So I guess when you pay, you're paying to create content for them? No thanks.

Great navigation app for hiking! I use it mainly in the UK and I find the free open street map good enough for all the hiking that I do. You can download higher resolution OS maps for a fee too. Never got lost. GPS locating is fast and can be set to only locating when using the phone to save battery. Very easy to import route from GPX and other format too. Definitely one of the best app out there.

Very useful app, it saved us when we lost the path because, on several occasions, an a certain point we missed the CAI signs (GR footpath) but thanks to this app we were able to find the right path! I suggest to improve the map's detail like 3D topographic relief map. More accuracy on GPS pointer and compass implementation.

Grr! When trying to register with Viewranger (following advice from WalkHighlands), on form submission I get "You must complete all required fields". All fields filled, so for sure I'm failing the unwritten and occult requirements for the password. Tip from an old webdev coder: make your error messages meaningful. App uninstalled. Unnecessary if you can read maps anyway, as any hillwalker should be able to. On behalf of CREM (Campaign for Real Error Messages)

A great app with loads of useful features. I would have given 5 stars but one important large drawback is the highly inaccurate "total ascent" per walk. It's easily 20% off mark compared to the real walk. I have no idea why this should be as the maps are totally accurate.

  141. Maurice Camps-avatar

    Maurice Camps

Great app! The only remark I have is that the GPS often resets to an old position before updating if you put your phone away for a while, but that is not a huge problem I guess =) I did only use online mode btw. I would consider buying offline maps of the quality is good.

Now use this all the time (with a map & compass as back up, of course). The only problem (although not Viewranger's) is that my phone doesn't have a compass sensor, so some features don't work.

Works well on foot or bike. As with all OS mapping, not all footpaths and bridleways still exist but generally very accurate. The app offers routes for walking and biking or you can plot your own. You can also record your route as you ride and save it. There are also a number of distance challenges. For example, walking 500 miles in a year or 1000 miles on a bike. I use this app all the time. You can buy individual tiles ( a small section of map) or you can subscribe and pay a yearly fee.

Hands down the best app to use in conjunction with a smart watch for navigating. I use it with a Casio Pro Trek and premium to see the OS maps while running in the hills. Amazing. I also use it for SAR work.
