Recent research suggests that exposure to blue light before sleep may distort your natural (circadian) rhythm and cause inability to fall asleep.
The cause is the photoreceptor in your eyes, called Melanopsin. This receptor is sensitive to a narrow band of blue light in the 460-480nm range which may suppress Melatonin production - a hormone responsible for your healthy sleep-wake cycles.
In experimental scientific studies it has been shown an average person reading on a tablet or smart phone for a couple of hours before bed time may find their sleep delayed by about an hour. See references below..
The Twilight app makes your device screen adapt to the time of the day. It filters the flux of blue light emitted by your phone or tablet after sunset and protects your eyes with a soft and pleasant red filter. The filter intensity is smoothly adjusted to the sun cycle based on your local sunset and sunrise times.

1) Bed reading: Twilight is more pleasant on the eyes for night reading. Especially as it is able to lower the screen backlight far below the ability of the backligt controls on your screen
2) AMOLED screens: We have tested Twilight on an AMOLED screen for 5 years without any sign of depletion or over-burning. If properly configured Twilight causes less light emission (by enabling dimming) with more equal light distribution (dark areas of the screen such as the status bar get tinted). This may in fact increase your AMOLED screen life time.

    When charging my phone, the Always On Display (AOD) comes on to display the remaining time left, but the app also causes the screen to glow red and consumes unnecessary battery power, taking longer to charge. Twilight should be disabled until the display can be unlocked. 🔓 Edit 6/28 #1: no because the background is AMOLED | Edit 6/28 #2: Dev said there's already a workaround for this... 'Settings > More > Don't filter ambient screens' ...it works too, so cool! Thank you for your help!! 😎💕

    Pretty good - once you switch it on you can feel the instantaneous relaxing of the eyes. Tweaking settings & creating custom profile is helpful as there can be considerable screen dimming. Works even with Huwaei tablet, a company that Twilight requires special considerations. Worked well also with OnePlus - similar issues for Twilight as Huwaei though less problematic by the sounds of it.

    App is unusable from the notification bar. Once enabled, it is impossible to deactivate it, even after killing the app from the Android app info menu. This fundamental bug has not been fixed in months. Now regret paying for this app. Would not recommend. PS: This is even after enabling the accessibility service, which of course was the first thing done before using the app originally.

    Does the job with a little random pressing buttons. Settings are hard to understand. Especially schedules and the "always/auto" button - I never understood which state is on and which is off. Tried the "tutorial" - it just makes the screen go dim and the bright again. Buttons for on/off should show their state clearly. Thanks for the app! | Edit: Author has been very helpful. +1star

    The aoo works well dimming the screen, although I don't quite understand the difference between the "screen dim" and "intensity" features. It is designed for Android devics\es, but I use it on my Chromebook and it is better than nothing, even though the features are less user-friendly on the Chromebook.

    *UPDATE - I followed the helpful advice given by customer support in response to my review and it worked perfectly, so I've changed the rating from 3 to 5 stars. Thank you!!* When it works, it works well, but it keeps automatically turning itself off when my screen goes dark, so when I want to use my phone, I have to manually turn Twilight back on (while squinting at a bright screen if I'm in bed in the dark).

    I would like it to stop asking for location every single tie I open it. and tk stop shutting off and every so ofte, it messes with my eyes and to stop being kicked off of the permission to stay on top of others. it keeps turning off every 2 minutes, saying I have to give it permissions to accessibility, and its on, and yet it keeps going off.

    Bless this app. I can dim or change the tint just right. I look over to my partner's iPhone and even on its lowest brightness its way, way, way, way too bright in a dark room at night. His poor eyes! My only complaint is that I have to pause it fairly frequently because it sometimes conflicts with other apps. I'm not sure that can be helped.

    absolutely fantastic, this developer is probably singularly responsible for my sleep health! check out everything they do, sleep as android is fantastic and the one time i had an issue they were SO responsive it made me feel even better about supporting them. this app is my insomnia light-therapy lifesaver.

    I've been using this app for about 2 years. Such a wonderful application. It really helps to reduce eye strain. I've checked out other apps created by the same creator, like the Sleep app and Kinestop. They're also awesome.
