requires following permissions on your android device.

view network connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.

Allows access to the list of accounts in the Accounts Service.

full network access
Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet.

read your contacts
Allows the app to read data about your contacts stored on your phone, including the frequency with which you've called, emailed, or communicated in other ways with specific individuals. This permission allows apps to save your contact data, and malicious apps may share contact data without your knowledge.

read the contents of your SD card
Allows the app to read the contents of your SD card.

run at startup
Allows the app to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the phone and allow the app to slow down the overall phone by always running.

control vibration
Allows the app to control the vibrator.

modify or delete the contents of your SD card
Allows the app to write to the SD card.

I have found Tutanota great to use, both on my Android phone and my laptop. I used it as a free app and enjoyed it so chose an annual subscription. The option to secure an email with a password or not is a handy feature. I have just begun using the calendar feature provided. It seems to lacks colour coding as some have otherwise enjoy its privacy and have found it works very well.

  2. plasmahidef-avatar

Ever since the DDoS attacks on Tutanota, my app no longer works. I keep getting notifications but everytime I click on it I get a message saying I'm offline and cannot connect to the server, even though I'm connected and all of my other apps are working. I can only signing on via a browser or on a pc. Update: Thanks. I can connect if using a vpn connection. Don't know why my ISP decided to block it all of sudden, but thanks again for your help.

Relatively user friendly and would have given 5 stars but the app does not notify you that an email has arrived until at least 20 minutes later. Have submitted logs but not received a response as yet. Otherwise a good app with encrypted calendar, contacts and emails. Ability to set up folders, rules and aliases all from within the app are a plus. Encrypted emails from zero knowledge providers must be supported. Fix the notification issue and this would be a 5 star rating.

I've been using Tutanota for more than 4 years now. The search function is completely useless. Great idea about privacy, but dysfunctional features, very slow to load and extremely basic interface with no improvement for years. Not happy and will be changing.

  5. Deep-avatar

The features are good. But the email search in free account is only upto last one month. This is not acceptable and the biggest deal breaker. Limiting search to one month is clipping an indispensable feature. Without email search I dont think it makes any sense to use it and get frustrated about not being able to search. I would consider this if in future the search restrictions are lifted. Update reply : I understand. Please feel free to utilize client side processing power and memory storage.

Exceptional end to end encrypted email services from Tutanota. I now exclusively use Tutanota encrypted email services and have deleted my gmail and yahoo email addresses. Tutanota is that good! I currently use the free version but will be updating it to a small payment version, maily as a donation to help the Tutanota team further develop and protect their services, especially against companies who are not happy we have access to encrypted services. Thanks Tutanota team, great service.

It's currently broken. Cannot login via WiFi or mobile network, I have no issue with either but it states it's due to me being offline which I am clearly not.

Very poorly designed app. Uninstalling. This app doesn't sync emails. Sent 3 emails to a newly created email on this website and the app couldn't even sync one of them. Thank god my payment failed. Switching back to protonmail

Your app is fine, but please do something about the notifications. Even though I turned my battery saver off, it still doesn't notify about the new emails.

  10. Archnet-avatar

I can't log in the application on my mobile device with my yubikey, I turn on my nfc to login in my tutanota account but the application doesn't have the obtion to log in my account with a yubikey, so please speak to the developer to take that in consideration

Used to be good. Now half the time their server either can't be reached at all or it takes minutes to log in. Quite unfortunate it's so unreliable if you have to know if you've received important mail. Edit: they confirmed they had "DDOS attacks". Also puts important mail in spam and setting inbox rules requires premium!? No thanks, there is another more reliable provider for encrypted email

Gave it a one ⭐ in my initial review & for good reason. After prolonged setup & a long wait.....................♾ I finally am able to checkout what's all the rave about 🤔 So far. So good 👍 This is my 2nd review I give 4 ⭐'s. For several reasons. I like cleanliness, passwords, encryption process & the option to upgrade ⬆️ Overall, its a very good app & a wonderful idea 💡 Your on to something good here. Just started using it. So I will give a final review. At a later date. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It is really up and down with this app. Some times it works perfectly, push mail, notifications, everything. However, presently pushmail and notification does not work at all and even uninstalling and reinstalling does not solve the problem. Furthermore, when you want to send an email, the app wants you to punch in a password for the recipient email address, totally crazy. I guess the guys at tutanota has messed up again...

  21. TheBoss-avatar

This is a great privacy email service. Probably the #1 rated as of this post. They have a lot of ways to evolve further, to offer more features and services in the future. But, the foundation is in place for their eventual growth. Say F-You to Google, Yahoo, Yandex, etc. You will never regret doing so, and using Tutanota. Rem, nothing is 100% free on life. Free stuff means you're the product.

Good but push notifications haven't worked since I installed, over 4 weeks. Have app not to sleep etc but only get emails when open app. Click on support goes to reddit, no actual chat etc so wouldn't upgrade to pay with no live as your on your own if your in trouble. No actual widget app that can be found to see emails. In settings very limited and can't even see notification settings. It might be secure but this is no good if it's too difficult to do A, B, C simple tasks. Needs tuning.

  23. Adam Cooke-avatar

    Adam Cooke

After learning of the ties Protonmail has to the UN, I decided to switch to a more trustworthy service. I'm giving Tutanota a spin and so far I like it a lot. Very fast, light and minimalist. The app seems nice so far. My suggestions thus far would be 1) get rid of the small edit buttons on the settings screens, and let me click on the form fields themselves. Easier and cleaner. 2) let me make the compose window wider on the desktop version, too narrow on high res display So far so good!

  24. Marcus Wright-avatar

    Marcus Wright

The app only major feature is security. It lacks labels, flagging, sometimes emails don't come through AT ALL, and the design is very very subpar. Also, customer support is TERRIBLE. I pay for support and they won't answer you for DAYS if at all. The ONLY thing this email service has that is good is security. That is it. Plus, PUSH NOTIFICATIONS DON'T WORK and it's 2020. You can tweak setting, etc. and it is still broke. No word on fix. ... Don't thank me for feedback, just fix ur broken app.

  25. Rohan Chopra-avatar

Love the service. The only problem I have is with the notifications. I do not get any notifications. Have already disabled battery optimization for the app. Thanks for the reply. I have restarted my phone multiple time since installing the app.

  26. Daisy Kelly-avatar

    Daisy Kelly

I pay for Tutanota and find it to be a great service. The phone app is useful for letting you know you have an email but you can't enlarge them so on the phone they can be unreadable especially from businesses. This is a small complaint about an otherwise excellent product by a fantastic company. I just wish my friends would use it too.

  27. Kaneki-avatar

Every is perfect but one thing that bother me which is why there's no getting a notification option? I mean ya i get it's more secure that way but it's also so annoying not knowing when one will receive that message. Any kind of notification would be appreciated.

Update. It has now been 6 days. I will use a different email service. This is irritating because I have need to send an email. It says I need to wait for 48 hours before I can use this. But it has been almost 4 days now. And I still have not been approved. Not sure about this app

  30. Sol-avatar

I have been a tutanota client from the early days and I have seen this excellent product grow over the years into the most unique and interesting email and Comms provider out there. I love how the team always has time to respond despite constantly working hard to improve every minute detail. To the developers thank you ! God's bless Germany.

Tutanota deserves all of the stars for being much better than protonmail (tried latter but horrible customer service) because it's simplistic, easy to login (unlike problems with Google) & lightweight. But problems like no notes feature (can be easily implemented) (yandex has through mail and drive app), no notifications whatsoever, no dark mode (actually its black mode) (like neon mode like Twitter), least recognition by web companies for sign-up like Xiaomi, Spotify. Please look into these 5⭐.

  32. J.R.-avatar

Love the interface. Very clean. Has every feature I need. Appreciate that even subject lines are encrypted. And I like the option to send encrypted messages to those that don't have Tuta -- great for sensitive financial docs at tax time. 👍

Love Tutanota so far, I pay and host my domain's mail with it. I really really wish it would show previews of the email subject in notifications though. Also, when I read an email on my desktop the notification doesn't go away on my phone. Would be nice if it automatically.

Uh, guys, your latest update on Android 6 has rendered the app login a 100% failure. I can't login due to an error popping up at the login screen. Will uninstall to see if that helps, but my experience says it won't help.

  35. Logan Barnett-avatar

Needs an option for every 2nd Monday and stuff. Also needs an option for a calendar widget. 5 stars because of how fast the dev's responded and actually responded to the review and not just an automated response.

Do not trust them! 1st: they are based in GERMANY, 2nd: (while they claim privacy and security), you can't create an account if you use a VPN (so they do read/log YOUR IP). Plenty alternatives out there. UPDATE AFTER RESPONSE: (A:) GDPR is a scam created so that nobody can demand to know what info third parties hold about oneself (B:) You just admitted to be checking IPs - since you are blocking those from GENUINE AND TOTALLY LEGAL (AND PAID FOR) VPNs so, I rest my case.

The bugs in Tutanota are legion: endlessly & perpetually syncing; notifications not working properly; tortoise-like speed; etc. Worst of all, Tutanota aliases display YOUR REAL NAME – this defeats the entire purpose of having an alias! Yet Tutanota promotes the use of aliases to unsuspecting users, when they're fully aware that they provide no additional privacy whatsoever. And despite having YEARS to fix the bug, they've allowed this situation to continue. What a monstrous betrayal of trust!

Very, very, very frustrating. Sometimes it simply won't let me login, telling me that I'm "offline". Of all my encrypted emails , this is by far the worst I have ever used. I can't wait to get rid of it. VERY UNSTABLE AND A BAD DECISION TO USE. *Edit, apparently they have been under attack, and that's what's causing the "login" issues. Will update review later.

Looks to be a good app, but unfortunately it does not allow me to register by either the app or the website. Every time it says "Registration is temporarily blocked for your IP address to avoid abuse". I have tried with VPNs located in multiple different countries, and with TOR. Every time the same message. Impossible to create an account to use the service, so one star from me :(

  60. Mr. Blue-avatar

it is always very slow to load messages. also many services will not accept this as a valid email. I will get the same email repeatedly even after I've checked it. Right after that I got a notification of a new email and I get the same email again. Annoying. There's not a whole lot of aesthetic appeal either. I was excited to try this service but I'm not happy with it at all... pretty sure I'm going to be shuttering this email address.

*Update I was finally able to sign up and have been using it for a few months now. It works well and I like knowing my emails are far more secure than before. I like that there is an encrypted calendar and switching over was fairly easy. There are a few things I would like to see that are available in other email/calendar platforms that would almost certainly move this to a five star app. In line conversations in emails, more field options in contacts, and customized repeats in calendars.

Don't bother. Takes four billion years to load. It would be quicker for me to climb over the mountain range, run down the valley, raft down the river, swim across the ocean and speak personally than it would be to install this app. The developer tells me that there was a DOS attack, 2x, try to install app, won't let me because account has been set up, but no way to enter password and won't send me a reset code. Boring. I have better things to do.

  63. Ian Jefferies-avatar

    Ian Jefferies

Finding several problems. First, some emails from genuine sources not correctly displayed (too small to see/read). Second, When auto image loading selected, option to trust sender is needed otherwise needs to be reclicked every time email is accessed or new email from same source arrives. Third, when content or sender deemed not valid, user should have option to trust. These things make using the app a PITA.

  64. Chase Dizzie-avatar

Lagging emails, server failures. I can't even use the keyboard on my device, especially the back button without causing the app to go haywire. Dark mode is nice and this is an excellent free encryption email service, but with how bad the programming and feature set is for the app, I see no reason in paying for an actual subscription until the app is fixed.

Installed app on Android in October 2019 and after a few months it quit pushing notifications. Quite frustrating. Beside that no issues. --- Thanks for reply. I am actually very impressed, I read prior to downloading this app I was hesitant which is why I went with protonmail, cuz I read that with end-to-end encryption would not be able to use the email function, without both parties agreeing in advance which seemed like such a hassle but so far I've not had any issues or even resemblance of anything like that. And honestly minus the slightly longer loading not any different than Gmail, wish free version could merge w GMX or accept it's emails lol

Then another notification saying I needed to email the team to say what I planned on using it for 🤦🏽‍♀️ ahhh for a secure email?? I'm not even sure they activated it for me to even try using it 🙄 very strange experience for a email experience.

Its been a life saver to help me feel secure moving away from gmail and yahoo email. The peace of mind knowing my information is secure is enough. While i cannot afford to pay for the full service monthly, i know tutanota has development cost to have this email service available for free to us all so it would be nice if there is a feature to donate to its continued development.

edit (after the company's response to this comment and our troubleshooting while being in contact with them): after being in contact with support, which was very fast in reaching me and trying out some things, the issue couldn't be resolved. so 5 stars for customer support, but 1 star, because I couldn't use the app. that would be 3 stars.

Has potential. Love the idea. However, I have not been able to receive alarms/notifications which means the calendar is not so useful. Even with battery optimization turned off, on android 9, it does not work. I also downloaded the desktop client and never received notifications. Seems to be some issues with setting alarms as well. I understand that in the past there was the ability to import contacts. I believe that said that it was a bug and they were repairing the problem. I have been checking for weeks and there has been no change. Many people would love to get away from google, Hotmail/outlook, and others, but are not going to want to enter contacts manually. I was considering the premium service, but there needs to be a response to something as critical as a problem importing contacts. Therefore, without a calendar with alarm/notifications, and no simple way to import contacts, I have uninstalled the desktop and Mobile app. You have great ideas, it just needs work. Good Luck.

A little sluggish and a little non-intuitive when deleting emails. Nonetheless, it has almost all the capabilities as the desktop browser equivalent. My issues are with the notification service. I will sometimes get push notifications for new emails, even after I open and read the emails. Doesn't matter if I rad them via the app or desktop site. Also, I am not a fan of the way emails are viewed. There is no zoom capability and the way it goes to the next email after deleting an email. Otherwise, this is still a great alternative to most email providers.

Seriously needs to be fixed. Everytime I am writing an email and switch windows on Android to copy something from a browser to paste on the email message, I end up losing the email message I was writing. The app logs in again every time a window is switched, and information is lost. I appreciate their commitment to privacy and security, but this is just too big of a problem. It needs to be fixed urgently.

Have used it for quite some time after moving from ProtonMail that was even bugger. It is a very basic app. It doesn't work without data, it keeps showing an Android notification that it's running, there's no refresh option or indicator, and it is very, very slow. If you came from eg Gmail or Outlook, you will lose a lot of features and probably be frustrated. I'm moving to Zoho as that's a decent app that has worked well for my other domains.

I feel a bit annoyed, I thought it was just a matter of time until it is more comfortable to use... But with Tutanota you can't conduct a search through your emails, for example. You'd have to scroll down endlessly to get to old things. All in all I feel stuck with it because I'd have to do some research again for another provider with similar security features which I at the moment don't have time for, then redistribute a new address to all the lists etc. Meanwhile I'm paying for a service that doesn't seem to be worth it, since I avoid the use of this uncomfortable email software. (On PC and phone both)

So far I really like this email service, however there are a few things i would change, particularly about the UI. 1. Animations feel too sluggish. Transitions take too long and could use easing 2. The way things are organized is unintuitive. I would only have one main drop down menu, and put everything under that in categories. Settings, for example, creates another drop down on the left where one would think the exit would be. 3. Theming! (edit:I meant custom themes but I wasRunningOutOfSpace)

Until a few weeks ago I never had a problem...had never seen Notification Service running on my device. But now it shows constantly and never actually reports the arrival of new mail. I've been using Tuta for over a year but unless the fix comes soon I may not be much longer. Good app, however I think it's worth pointing out that there are often delays in notifications coming through about having received an email. For example, today I was using the desktop version on my laptop and received an email, however the notification didn't come through on my phone until almost 2 hours later. Otherwise, it's a very enjoyable mail app.

Great concept. Fix Bug and will give 5 stars. "Bug" is really just that the time delay for sensing a press and hold action is too short. So EVERY TIME I scroll through my emails, it goes into multi-message selection mode. This is annoying. Please fix. PS: And maybe get people of all ages to beta test, not just 26 year old programmers. Not doing this is probably how "bug" happened.

Only thing missing is native Android Contact sync and Calendar sync with good calendar sharing features. Other than that I am missing a cheaper subscription that only adds 1 alias and ups storage to 5 or 10gb. Nice app that is very s-l-o-w opening. Some emails do not fit the phone page. Those emails run down the left side of my screen. Double tap to zoom, in hopes of making the page fit, equals a page way to big. Cant 2-finger expand page when needed. No way to advance to next email after deleting, or moving a mail. Could be a real nice app, love the security, just rough around the edges yet.

Overall it's a good app. However, recently (after the last update) I was forced to deduct 1 star as Tutanota is no longer syncing correctly. EVERY SINGLE TIME I need to clear cache and do a forced stop before it'll begin working again properly. Furthermore, its overall glacial speed is really getting on my nerves – sometimes I'm waiting for 3 or 4 minutes for the darn thing to display new emails 📧. 👎 Note to developer: all the 'details' you need I've already outlined here.

One out of the best most important e-mail systems that is easy to use. If it can be somewhat usable while offline, like Gmail, it will be very much in demand. App always ends up as one of the higher battery drainers even when I haven't even opened it. Also regularly have delayed notifications (and yes I have turned off battery optimisation, I do know what I'm doing, and my device gets restarted every day). It has been pointed out many times by many users and you are in total denial! Works as advertised. You can sign up from a VPN connection, then likely have to email them to release the 48 hour block, as I found out through experience. No biggie, but frustrating if you didn't know that ahead of time. Managing several identities is clunky, have to create inbox rules and alias folders, then go find new emails in those folders, otherwise all emails are commingled with main identity. Can install/update via FDroid instead of Google Play Store. Tapir compatible calendar?

+private, free, good looking, good concept, refreshing, good addition to the email market, better than most private email (apps) —no imap, no export of all mail (except selecting each one, which is no good if you have lots of mail aaaggghhhhhh, and installing extra software), bad search (which gets worse after getting more and more emails), time wasted searching for email, takes time to load, does not even load offline, lately (shared) emails come doubled (i get two completely identical emails)

Moving to a greener alternative, so far all good but I find the display makes email fonts tiny and there's no way to zoom in or enlarge them. I guess it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make at the moment but it is difficult to read and accurately tap links when the writing is so small and I'd rather not have to enlarge the font on my phone jyst to suit one app!

Stay clear of Tutanota – it's not fit for purpose. It's full of bugs that the developers constantly promise to fix but never do. Worst of all, the app is managed by a bunch of German developers who lack the technical expertise to provide a truly privacy-oriented email service. For example, Tutanota allows you to create aliases – BUT these aliases reveal your real name, making them pointless! The developers have had TWO YEARS to rectify this issue and have done nothing. I rest my case.

It is quick to sync and I always have my latest mail. Nice simple design with a feel of security. Although without a security pin to unlock the app, it does feel like a compromise on their security. Besides the lack of a pin the security feels solid and the method of sending encrypted mail works well. I would also appreciate an option for contacts and calendar to integrate in Android local callander and contacts app. If these two features are added it would be the ultimate Mail app. Thanks.

At first, when I touched the 'new mail' notification, the app would launch with the sign-in form, and my email address already filled-in. This saved me a lot of time, since I only needed to type my password. Recently however, this behaviour changed, and now I need to type my address every-single-time which is quite tiresome using the phone's keyboard. I'd like the app to always remember my email address. That's -2 stars for me.

This app is unusable due to having to relog in all the time. Its just too much hassle. When sending photos the email keeps bouncing due to the attachments being to large. I get the message that the file I'm trying to send is 28megs and the cut off for the max it can send is 26megs but when i check the attachements being sent they are only 10 megs. I give up. I checked my phone's notification settings and everything seems fine but, still, I do not get the notifications directly. ----------------------------------------- I did what you said. Whenever I unlock my phone it starts showing a syncing notification that never disappears and on top of that it doesn't actually sync anything, ever. Only when I open the app it pointlessly shows a new mail notification and the syncing notification finally disappears, only to reappear a few minutes later after closing the app (while the phone is still unlocked) and again doesn't sync anything, ever. I like Tutanota email and the android app to the most part. But one annoyance has been the persistent "syncing" notification. Many others also have complained about this. Why is the app so slow? It's slow to reload, it's slow to open, it's slow when it loads emails. If I get a notification for a new email, and open the app while it's running it doesn't show the new email and instead I have to shut down the app and reopen it. I appreciate how Tutanota respect privacy and would pay for privacy, but the poor user experience makes it far from a legit productivity tool. Here are the most prominent pain in the ass for me: a) it takes 10--20 seconds to launch and show my inbox; b) after reading an email, it will apprise to me in another device after hours, then I click it, wait for 10 seconds, and turns out to be an email I read hours ago. It waste my time everyday like that but it is supposed to be a productivity tool.

Switched from self-hosting OpenSMTPD to Tutanota, in order to save time and effort. Service is very good and reliable. E-mails arrive and get sent quickly. Haven't encountered any deliverability issues so far. App works fine on my entirely Google-free phone with no google services, or replacements such as microG. Including the notifications. It's also available on F-droid It has some quirks however. The one that annoys me most day-to-day is notifications remaining even if I read the mail on another device. So every time I pick up my phone and see "1 unread mail", I end up clicking on it only to go "oh yeah, this is the mail I read on my laptop 10 minutes ago". Other issues include, but are not limited to: Iffy scrolling on mails. No zooming on mails. The forward and reply buttons are confusingly similar, yet not labeled. There's no reply-to field. The underlying platform is great, but their interfaces need more time to mature and iron out quirks before they deserves 5 stars.
