  1. Olwyn Sheehan-avatar

Terrible App. Unclear pronunciation, and at other times just plainly incorrect pronunciation. Numerous bugs that prevent children from successfully completing a 'game' even when they know what the correct response/answer should be. Don't waste your time. The cost is minimal 99 cents but frustrations of poor performance does a disservice to the child you are trying to teach.

  2. Rachel Lemmon-avatar

My son started using this when he was 4 years old. He is now 5 and has finished the whole game. When he first started playng it, I wasn't convinced that he was actually learning letter sounds - it seemed to me like he was just learning how to move forward in the game by process of elimination. But over time he started reading signs, things around the house, etc. with really no other instruction than this game! Now I'm convinced that while he (and I!) thought he was just playing a game he also learned all of his letter sounds and has started to sound out words on his own! He's actually sad the program is over and wants me to start him a new account so he can start over! **As a side note, some letter combinations don't have the same sound in our American accent as they do in an English accent, so there are times when the program can be tricky for those more used to a different accent.

  3. Charu Rastogi-avatar

My kid was at the brink of starting to read when I installed this game. This was his first mobile game ever and the it just hastened the move. My kid is reading fluently now. The game is engaging and introduces new words very smartly, without overwhelming the little ones. Is there an option to make the font size smaller (I liked the previous one, before the update)?

  4. Claire Tansey-avatar

This is an amazing resource for parents and I cant recommend it highly enough. My son was very reluctant to read and lacked confidence. After playing the monster game, he has grasped all of the basics that he somehow missed in school and is now much more confident and able to read full sentences, with all of the tricky words and combinations. It has made such a difference. Thank you!

  5. Sophie White-avatar

This app got my reluctant eldest to read after she decided she didn't like books with words. Fast forward 2 years and she is doing exceptionally well in her reading and loves this game! My youngest started Reception so she is now playing this. I always recommend to other parents when you have special offers running. It worked so well I bought it on Android and Apple!

Worth every penny of the 99p paid for this. Very well thought out game, my kids (4&7) love playing this and don't realise they are learning to read. Hard to find an educational game this good in British English. Well done.

  7. Lindsay Gajownik-avatar

    Lindsay Gajownik

My 4 year old loves it. The characters are engaging. It's the right amount of challenge and progress. That she is encouraged to keep trying and doesn't get bored.

  8. itsjoshie tv-avatar

Oh my! I posted my review of another app here originaly. I am sorry. THIS app is great. My 4 yo loves it and plays frequently. He is learning his letters and sounds, he is more of a numbers kid, I was thrilled when I was introduced to this app. With the current state of things in the world we can still get our learning done. I want to homeschool him and found this to be wonderful addition. Thank you so much! Again I do apologize for the mistake I made.

  9. Charlotte Messer-avatar

Downloaded this after reading recommendations from other parents, my 3 year old has loved playing it, the phonics being British rather than American has been useful, the games are easy to understand for a child who had never played an electronic game before. I would recommend it to others as my son picked up reading letters very quickly even with playing short amounts of time once a week or so.

  10. Kate Mape-avatar

Great engaging game for helping with phonics and reading. My 5 year old has been enjoying the harder levels to reinforce his phonics learning at school in a fun way at home. He enjoys the games and doesn't realise he is learning at the same time My preschooler has also been having a go at playing with adult assistance and has started to recognise letters in books as a result.

  11. Kris Connolly-avatar

My 2 early readers are absolutely in love with this game! It's the perfect amount of fun with learning. They are nothing but excited about every aspect of it and are doing so well with reading! My son especially has always been a more timid reader and this game has helped him blossom! Thank you to the creators for not only providing us with this great game but, also making it free for those who might not have been able to afford it otherwise! From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!

  12. Michael Ross-avatar

Very good at engaging and entertaining my 5 year old son. He gets frustrated sometimes and doesn't understand a part or two, but eventually gets it (maybe with a wee bit of guidance). So far, the best phonics app I've found in his age group. My only critique is, how long it will capture his interest. 3 days, sure. He loves it. But most of the educational games these days are very repetitive and he opts to minecraft. We will see how long it keeps interest. So far, 5 stars easy. Buy it.

  13. Emily Menard-avatar

Can creat Multipl accounts. Great app for Early ages. Starts with the alphabet and phonetic sounds (in the 1st level) and collects sight words along the way (2nd &3rd world). Moves into reading (in the 3rd level). No in-game purchases. Kids create and can dress up their own monsters/creatures with clothes they earn and buy with stars they collect along the way. This is a UK created app so there is slight British accent, I just repeat how I'd say. I enjoy watching my child play. Highly recommend.

  14. Tasha McClatchy-avatar

    Tasha McClatchy

It's very difficult for my little to navigate on her own. She usually understands what she needs to do but the game logistics make it bet difficult for her to select the correct letter or sound. I think the games and activities within the game are too complicated for the age range. It needs to be simplified in order for the littles to be able to work it all by themselves.

  15. Renee Kelso-avatar

Great app that my 5 year old loves and uses independently. He's reading fairly well in a short period of time. It's worth mentioning that the narrator is British so pronunciations may be different depending on your country.

  16. SHARON Gunter-avatar

This program is so much fun for the kids. They enjoy the game while learning letter sounds, matching letters to sounds, blends, hard words, and reading sentences. They will be able to read a book by the time they are finished. It is a great game.

  17. Nicole Zeroth-avatar

It's amazing that this is a free app! Thank you for keeping it that way. Right now my 4K students are loving it while they are "distance learning"!

  18. Alice Beaver-avatar

My daughter loves this game and has learned so much since she started playing. My only suggestion would be to name the letters along with the sounds, as my daughter knew the alphabet and upper case letters, she had a hard time putting the name of the letter with the sounds/letters she was seeing.

  19. Amy Alexander-avatar

Amazing App For Teaching Your Little One To Read!! My daughter is actually excited about getting up and going on a learning App! The "Tricky's" are adorable! I highly recommend this App if you have a little one that needs to learn to read, it's fun, cute and entertaining all while being educational!! Best Reading App out there!

  20. Melissa Anema-avatar

My 5.5 year old daughter loves this game! She is reading at a grade 2 level already. The only thing is I find it confusing to set up. It is also very difficult to reset the game if another player accidentally uses someone else's profile.

  21. Michael De-avatar

Nice game but too repetitive, even for this sort of game where repetition is important.

  22. Janine Spouncer-avatar

    Janine Spouncer

This app is possibly meant for kids who have started learning to read at school? I'm a Brit living abroad and my almost 5 year old asked to learn to read in English (she won't learn in here until she's 6). Anyway, I thought I'd give this app a go. She has fun playing but I don't feel she's learning to read. She recognises the phonics and can play the games with no problems but she can't use what she's learned. A lot of games are guesswork. You can progress by clicking and not knowing anything

  23. Heather Traudt-avatar

Some parts a a little tricky to learn how to play but otherwise a fun game.

  24. Rachel Reveley-avatar

The challenges are the right level for my 5 year old but she gets very frustrated with it as the user interface is too complicated. Also the letters don't appear some of the time, making it impossible to continue.

  25. Kurt Reinebach-avatar

My son has gotten much better at listening for letter sounds and using them correctly since playing this game. At first, he was just hitting the different options to get through the game but when we started sitting with him as he played his reading has gotten really good

  26. Joanna Reid-avatar

Best phonics app! The games relate to the new phonics code and it has steady progression throughout. At last not too babyish and advances to longer vowel sounds, sight words and other key phonics knowledge. Thanks Teach Monster Team! :) My kids have completed it. Is there a part 2 that continues the learning? My kids really enjoyed it.

  27. samTHEthird-avatar

My son adores this game and I don't mind him playing it because he is learning while doing so. It can be repetative with the actions possible for the monster to do however the constantly changing narrative reinforces the sounds they are working on. Totally worth it!

  28. Holly Winter-avatar

Absolutely love this app my son is 5 nearly 6 and is struggling with his phonics, he has only used this app 3 times and already his teacher is saying that he seems to be more interested when they learn phonics associating it with this app making references about teach your monster to read. Am very impressed.

  29. Richard Drozd-avatar

I am 100% convinced that this app has helped my 4 year old learn to read properly. She rarely needs to sound out the letters now as she knows what the groups of sounds sound like. This should be widely implemented in nurseries and primary schools.

  30. Kayleigh O'Leary-avatar

    Kayleigh O'Leary

I love this app. My 5 year old started using it before she started school and learned a lot. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because it crashes quite often and you have to restart the planet

  31. Al Morris-avatar

Good app, only complaint is that the speaking instructions can be quieter than the background music. Can be challenging at times. It's great though.

  32. M S-avatar

I live the game for kids, and also that it's available for purchase from app store so it can be shared instead de Google family. Just wish kids could save their profile across devices. Ie. When they play on their tablet. Then my phone when away from home

  33. Lindsay Clover-avatar

My 4 year old and I enjoy playing this game together. 10-20 minute stints work well for her before the focus drifts and I don't mind it at all!

  34. Fran Taylor-avatar

Great app and brill price, but it would be nice if 'your monster' was gender neutral. It appears to be male with no option to change it to female or gender neutral pronouns. Why is male the default (and in this case, only) option? #everydaysexism #letkidsbekids

  35. Martin Tootill-avatar

Great award winning app for kids, good variety of mini games and the narration by Simon Farnaby is not painful on the ears like lots of other kids 'educational' apps.

  36. Adon Polatka-avatar

I teach English Learners (EL) and have used this website/app for several years. I use it to teach letter names, letter sounds, deciding, fluency, sight words and basic reading skills. I love how it gamifys learning.

  38. Brittany L-avatar

I love this game so much when school introduced me to it I was like oh yeah this is going to be a really boring game but then when I started playing it I was like this is the funniest game I ever played and I was like yeah I should keep playing with it so yeah so yeah it's the funnest game I ever played in the world so I was like wow why you not ever know about this game like and like some kids will be like this is the the boringest game ever and I'm like what are you talkin about this is the b

All of my children have/are now using this app. It is a great way to fun way to support their learning along side regular reading. Well done guys!

  44. Dave Fone-avatar

Work has obviously gone into this app, but in my opinion, a child should be attempting to spell words they actually hear and use (cat, boy) before diving into more exotic words (pip, yap). Multiple difficulties were tested.

  45. laura franco-avatar

My son loves this. It's better than ABC mouse.

This is a great tool to help kids learn to read. The app points out word families in a fun and engaging way. Perfect for my first grader!! I am so glad I have this app. I love that this game has 3 different starting levels.

My daughter really struggled with reading. A friend that sold Usborne Books told me about Teach Your Monster to Read. What a fun way to learn to read. My daughter struggled with the combination vowel sounds like the ea, ou, ie, etc. this app really helped her to learn these. She will never be the best reader but instead of failing she is now making 80's on her reading test. Thank you for making learning fun!!

  59. Sara Griffith-avatar

My kids love this game. My 8 year old wants a math version

  60. S K-avatar

Kudos! to the awesome app makers. We are looking forward to some math apps too. Keep up the great work. My kids are crazy about this app. My 4 yr old is already reading the sentences and getting perfect at spelling through various games in this.

  62. Gagan Singh-avatar

My daughters picking up phonics quite fast Due to the interactive games you have. Presently I have it installed on my phone. Now I want to install on my tablet. How do I transfer the same application without paying again.

I have noticed a big difference in my kindergarten daughter's ability to sound out words since she became interested in this app!!

  65. Suzie Clubb-avatar

Only not 5star as my 4 year old finds the game instructions sometimes tricky and there doesn't seem to be a parents explanation

  66. Emma Dickinson-avatar

Lovely app to help support your children with their phonics.

  67. Yolandra de la Cruz-avatar

    Yolandra de la Cruz

Kids love it. They just think it's a game

  68. Michelle M-avatar

Why is this not in the family library? If i payfor it i want to add it to another device that's set up with a kid lock. Google says its a setting on the developers end since it was downloaded the end of 2016 initially.

  69. Orlaith O'NEILL-avatar

    Orlaith O'NEILL

Absolutely fabulous for my 4 year old

  70. Mandi H-avatar

Absolutely amazing! My son got an account through school in Pre-K and he loved it from the start. The levels are simple, but challenging enough to keep his attention and really helped with recognition of letter sounds and sight words. It is fun and educational, which is so hard to find in a good kids game these days. I would recommend this game to anyone with kiddos just starting out or thoes that are struggling with reading!

  71. Tash Martin-avatar

My daughter is just starting to learn to read and was struggling with some tricky words, in the week shes been using this app theres already been a massive difference and she has finally moved off wordless books and onto first reading! The app is not too babyish and perfectly entertaining whilst educational. I would highly recommend it and wish I had found it sooner!

  72. Juan Carlo Garcia-avatar

    Juan Carlo Garcia

Highly recommended. This game is really smart in combining game and learnig at the same time. My 4 year old likes seeing the monster jumoing after completing every task and she feels a great accomplishment and brags it to her brother or me but due to this she misses the next instructions. Is there a way to make it repeat the instructions? This is really great. I really appreciate the effort put into this. Congrats to the team involved!

  73. Ivee Gonzales-avatar

My 6 year old loves playing this game.

  74. Kk Rr-avatar

This is a really great app for little kids and the part where a monster is atacing kids can do word familys and do awsome and fun games to catch the monster. And my favorite part of the game is whdn you get to change your monsters color and what their wairing this truly is a awsome game for little kids

  75. Mark Joseph Arthur Escobar-avatar

    Mark Joseph Arthur Escobar

As what was previously stated, its sounds randomly turns off by itself making it useless at some point esp. for those kids that are just starting to learn. Tried to relaunch it but still the same. Way better if this will be fixed hopefully, since the game has a lot of potential.

  76. Lindsay Grove-avatar

My boys love this program. It's fun and they are learning so much.

  77. Jinah Song-avatar

This app is fun and so well designed. My students love it!♥

  78. Tina Hubert-avatar

It was like when I was about to lock off of it it's just kept playing the music I could stop it but I stopped it though

  79. Anna Pearson-avatar

My class absolutely LOVE this app - they are so keen to play! It is really encouraging, has a good balance of learning new material and consolidating knowledge and is pitched perfectly to be brilliant fun for 5 year olds! I would give a warning that you need the sound up to a good level in order to play it (it's a phonics app after all), but this just means it can be a prize activity for a few children at a time instead of a whole class at once activity! You can choose what level children start at but I have actually started all mine at the beginning and no-one is complaining! So grateful for this.

  80. Rebecca Paige-avatar

Kids LOVE it! It's so fun to play my kids don't realize they're learning. It's very kid friendly with easy controls and great graphics. They really like earning prizes for their monster. The mini games keep them engaged without burnout. It progresses smoothly so no big jumps in ability which helps keep the kids from getting frustrated. It's not timed so kids can work at their own pace until they've mastered a sound. Overall we LOVE Teach Your Monster to Read!

  81. Kimberly Quick-avatar

This is a great app that helps with learning/ becoming familiar with sounds and letters. There are different games to choose from to help with this. My only issue is that it states the word or sound one time and there is no where to click to hear it again if your child doesn't quite get it the first time. Also, it would be helpful if they would say what letter they are showing before saying the sound it makes. But, it's still very good, I just feel that these features will make it even better.

  82. Scott C-avatar

This game is fantastic for the kids, however it has been crashing on multiple devices at the same point. The app is in the background but it's still playing music and the video can be seen in the background of the device. Would be interested in seeing this fixed. Otherwise the app is well worth the money. Edit: To my knowledge this issue has been resolved. Thanks for your help and keep up the great work. Full stars

  83. Mandy Moon-avatar

Great app my son loves this The game play has taken him from single letter sounds to more complex phonics and now simple sentences. English pronunciation not American. Games are repeated but the difficulty of the reading changes. It is simple enough for him to play on his own. He loves getting new trickies and customising his monster.

  84. Stephen Beare-avatar

I had issues getting my daughter's progress to go back a step, but the developer response to my last comment helped with that (thanks!). However, there has been a weird issue where the sound just stops working (Android and not in DnD mode), and that sadly makes it impossible to play at the moment.

  85. Reddy Linton Family-avatar

    Reddy Linton Family

The voice sound tracks and phonics sound tracks aren't playing after 30 seconds or so. We are on level 1 of the easiest mode. The music keeps playing but the other sounds stop after a short time, which makes the game unplayable. We have tried resetting many times. Please fix and I'll update my rating.

  86. Sarah Zhu-avatar

Quite a boring game for my 6 year old. Don't know how to get to the right level for her. The words used in the game are so simple. The hight speed game is too fast. Need to be able to adjust the speed. So far quite disappointed by the purchase despite all the goid reviews.

  87. Tony Morgan-avatar

My 5yr old loves the app. She stole my phone to play it on as the wife is fed up of hers being taken but it has never asked for permissions to use the microphone so the parts where it says 'say the sentence out loud' do not work. Permissions can't be added because the app has never asked for them? Little confused

  88. Nate-avatar

Issue with game crashing during 10min adventure quick play. Everytime the ship "hyperspeed" to the next part it has a chance of freezing with sound stuck. GALAXY S10+ Edit: thanks developers for response. I will try and provide video, I don't know when it will freeze but will try.

  89. Stephen Steele-avatar

My boy is three and this app stretches his imagination while helping him learn, a really good game that I don't mind him playing and I am not easily pleased. I like the voice over of Simon Farnaby brings a little bit more class to an already brilliant game.

Hangs my Pixel 2 phone. The game plays on smoothly but if I try to go to home and check any notifications, it hangs my phone. Only restarting the device resolves the issue. I have purchased this app thinking I'll be satisfied. But I'm concerned. Please resolve this issue ASAP.

As a former teacher and current older cousin, I'm amazed by how great an educational and entertainment resource this is. My students' learning improved by playing it, and I even recommended it to adults starting English, whom also found ir enjoyable. Highly recommended!

This game has really helped our daughter want to read. She really enjoys playing the game, and her reading skills improved greatly. We still remind her that she is a "champion reader"! :)

A great resource to support phonics in school. My kindergarten class love playing this at home and it supports their learning of phonics in the classroom. Would love to see more resources related to the class for teachers too! A great and positive app

It really helped my daughter with her reading and segmenting her words.

I am only 7 and I play this game in 2nd grade in my school and I play it on my mom's computer as well you help mr.bear get saved from a dr.squid and you can play with the flowers and ducks and a rocket ship it's super fun you should play it if you never played it.

I'm sure this would be a great game but as others have stated, after about 30 seconds of playing all sounds stop making it impossible to play :-( Killing off the app and restarting makes no difference you just have to wait until it starts working again. A shame really.

Both my kids (aged 4 and 7) love this game, and the price is very fair for what you get! My only complaint is that the adventure ends 😁 You can keep playing by returning to planets on your own but my daughter lost interest in that. I wish there was another practice reading adventure, as kids can move quite fast through the games/levels, a follow up game that practiced what they learnt (and could be played over and over, to say increase a top score) would be great.

Just used it for the first time with my 2 year-old (nearly 3) grandson. If he wasn't a bit tired he'd have happily carried on after the half hour we'd already done. He picked up the whole idea of the app in minutes of starting to read and loves it. He was even pressing the screen to direct operations without help for some of the sections (both the games and the story bit). The only niggle is that the flower game can be tricky to do - purely a technical issue rather than educational. Even I found getting the monster onto the right track really difficult, especially if the correct direction was down. It may have been my tablet, which is why I haven't marked it down. It's possible to not use the flowers without missing anything, so it's not a real problem. I'd say that the rocket is the easiest to use for a little person (and his Gran)! He really loves the prizes - especially the food lol. All in all I'd heartily recommend this for any youngster who's ready to read. If it turns out to be a tad advanced (or the toddler isn't as interested in reading as you thought), it can hang around until the time is right.

My 4 year old loves this app. He's just starting to read, and this has been great for helping him practice skills. The games are all challenging but not punishing for a kid who may not have the best fine motor skills. I just wish there was a way to focus the game on a few particular mini games, like picking the right word out of a sentence. It's definitely a 5* game though, works like a charm on a 6 year old tablet and I don't mind my son spending an hour playing!

game was fantastic for my four year old, she was sounding out letters and really picked up on the concept quickly, I was going to purchase it as I was watching this little girl scream for joy, that's until it froze completely, still playing music but zero response to the app, I wont be purchasing this game anymore. thanks for the fun trial but now I have to find a program to buy that doesnt freeze up. My daughter was on the third world, it froze on the flower part, I'm not sure how to take a vide
