Buy your tickets – as easy as 1-2-3. Ruter's mobile app lets you buy your ticket before you get on board. The app is valid on the Metro, buses, trams, ferries and trains in Oslo and Akershus. RuterBillett requests access permission to the following functions: - Read phone status and identity: Used to protect your ticket from counterfeiting by linking it to your phone's unique ID. RuterBillett does not have access to make phone calls. - Access precise location (GPS and network-based) Used in connection with ticket purchases, so that RuterBillett can automatically suggest a ticket based on the zone in which you are located. You can still purchase a ticket even if the location function is turned off, but you must manually enter the stop or station from which the ticket will apply. - Receive data from internet: Used to facilitate communication with Ruter's ticketing system when purchasing and downloading tickets to your mobile. - Receiving data from the internet: Used when receiving error messages and information from Ruter's ticketing system. - View network connections Used during rapid receipt of error messages if the network goes down. This is to enable the customer to get fast notification and not to have to wait for an unnecessarily long time. - Run from start-up/Autostart from start-up: Used to send notifications when tickets and payment cards expire. - Prevent the phone from sleeping Used to safeguard communication between your phone and Ruter's ticketing system. - Control of vibration function/vibrator: Enables vibration on notifications. - Read synchronisation settings: Used to ensure that period tickets are updated automatically with a control code and today's picture. - Use fingerprint hardware To use fingerprint as an alternative to password. - Read your contacts Used when sending tickets to phone numbers stored in your contacts. - Control near field communication Used when reading the content of a travel card. If you want to block access, you can do so from your phone using the "Settings" page. www.ruter.no www.ruter.no/kontakt Buy your tickets – as easy as 1-2-3. Addendum: I followed someone's advice in another review and got myself a TransferWise debit card: it works! TransferWise sent the card to me at my Norway address in about one week. This won't help if you just got to Oslo, but it's a lifesaver for me. If you're a visitor to Oslo, know this: you can't use this app unless you are Scandinavian. Also, you cannot use cash. Instead, you'll have to buy a Ruter card at local stores and remember to keep it replenished (when they're open, so don't go wandering the city in the evening or on a Sunday). When you board a bus or train, you'll tap the card to the reader, and half of the time, it will not work. Then you'll have to explain to a controller that you did in fact tap the card, they won't believe you, and they'll give you a ticket. The best part is that you can pay the fine right on the bus or tram and THEY WILL GLADLY TAKE ANY FOREIGN CREDIT CARD! Note: I read the replies from Ruter. Four years ago, they still allowed foreign credit cards. This notion that they're "adding" forms of payment is not true. They're returning a feature that was already in place before. I have heard them promise that they will allow foreign cards again, and four years later, they still haven't. The good news is: Oslo is a wonderfully walkable city. Also, the Oslo bike share system takes foreign credit cards!

Has arbitrary restrictions on the credit/debit card country and doesn't indicate this anywhere. Just fails with "transaction failed". I wouldn't be angry if it just told you what types of card are accepted instead of giving a misleading error message.
Kate Kosche
Super super SUPER annoying that you cannot use US or Canadian credit cards. I hate using PayPal but it was the only method of using app in Oslo. At the very least they need to make it work with Google Pay. Delete, goodbye and good riddance.

The application is useless. If you don't have a card that was issued in one of the countries admitted by them you can forget about the public transportation in Oslo because you won't find tickets machines either in the center of the city. "we currently accept cards from 24 countries due to user security reasons" really?! How stupid to be to bilieve that?! Obviously that are more racist reasons

Did exactly what it should without any issues.

Not very intuitive. Unclear zoning, unreasonable ticket price. Still prefer driving.

This was the Worst paying app I've ever used, or at least tried to use.. It does not accept foreign credit cards! I tried to use it more than 10 times with 3 different cc and it did not work! Public transportation in Norway is super expensive and when you need to fight in order to buy ticket, it's just don't worth it.. Bergen is much nicer and actually has a working app, you should go there and not Oslo.

I tried two different Danish cards and the app didn't accept them. Plus, the customer service centre won't answer. And why remove the ticket machines if the app doesn't work?

I have entered the train in a hurry in the morning and bought a ticket using this app, soon after there was a ticket check up. In the time of ticket checking, I had a valid ticket, but I was still fined after hearing some nonsense in local language. It made no sense to me and bad experience. Whats the point of using the app if I had to purchase the ticket way earlier? ://

I've used the app in '18 and it worked fine. From '19 they changed the app, making it more difficult for ticket purchase. It has become impossible to buy a ticket unless your credit card (mine was Visa electron) has been issued in limited number of european countries.Staff weren't much helpfull. Save your time and energy and go buy the ticket in near kiosk (if you 're at the airport). I've expected more from public transportation system.
