Dalil tradisi walimah al-haml ini bisa kita lihat dalam hadits riwayat Muhammad Ismail al-Bukhari dalam Sahih al-Bukhari (Beirut: Dar al-Fikr, 1422), juz IV, hal. 111, hadits nomor 3208:

قَالَ: إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ يُجْمَعُ خَلْقُهُ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ عَلَقَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ مُضْغَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يَبْعَثُ اللَّهُ مَلَكًا فَيُؤْمَرُ بِأَرْبَعِ كَلِمَاتٍ، وَيُقَالُ لَهُ: اكْتُبْ عَمَلَهُ، وَرِزْقَهُ، وَأَجَلَهُ، وَشَقِيٌّ أَوْ سَعِيدٌ، ثُمَّ يُنْفَخُ فِيهِ الرُّوحُ،…

“Sesungguhnya setiap orang di antaramu dikumpulkan penciptaannya di dalam perut ibunya empat puluh hari berupa nutfah, kemudian menjadi segumpal darah, (empat puluh hari kemudian), kemudian menjadi segumpal daging selama itu pula (40 hari berikutnya). Kemudian diutuslah kepadanya malaikat, lalu meniupkan ruh kepadanya dan diperintahkan atasnya menuliskan empat hal; ketentuan rejekinya, ketentuan ajalnya, ketentuan amalnya, dan ketentuan celaka atau bahagianya …”
