Reviews From google play store

Check the history of this review. This app is so broken it's useless. Constant audio/video sync issues (I checked the files manually, they're fine), sync doesn't work right, and a myriad of other issues that have been around forever. In fairness though, I'm glad to have the hamburger menu style of the desktop app back, so it appears someone somewhere might be listening.

I really love the recent update to the app. I have had this app for sometime and they are always working to improve it. Is it the best app out there, of course not. Is there room for improvement, yes. The great thing about the developers at Plex, is they listen to feedback and work to implement changes that help the whole community. I am not affiliated with Plex in any way.. Just a fan of their work!

Honestly I really like Plex as a service and the web app works really good, but the app team needs to get their heads out of their butts and fix this steaming pile of garbage. The player feels clunky and bootleg, they redesign the app every other update, my home screen literally won't load since the last update, and many basic features that you would expect an app like this to have are missing. The list goes on. That being said, the app is usable but in no way is it a good experience to use.

This app used to be awesome, but the developers keep trying to find new ways to hide the Shows and Movies sections... You know, the parts of Plex that people actually use. Instead, they seem to be focused on pushing their own syndicated content and becoming the next YouTube... Or something. With the recent update, it takes twice as many taps to find the Shows/Movies menus. Seriously! This is Plex's main use case, and they've completely hidden it from the user.

Plex is amazing. However, my mobile experience of Plex, at least from an administrating point of view, is limited at best. I used to be able to use from any mobile device and refresh metadata, add users, so forth. The Plex website has become less and less mobile friendly. Not recognizing many touch inputs while navigating the site. For example, attempting to change agent settings from a mobile browser is currently impossible, doesn't register the input. It is very inconvenient....

The current app version is awfu. It crashes every two songs, and the lack of offline mode is truly annoying. The app relies too much on network availability, and apparently if no network is detected the app goes bananas and crashes constantly. Even when the network is available, still crashes despite the content being played is stored locally on the phone. To the devs, please give us the offline mode back and let us decide when to use it.

Very good looking app. Yes, you can stream your content to mobile but after you pay these guys a little fee.. (one time fee) ... And i paid it too, so i was very much enjoying watching my media on phone. But then after a few weeks suddenly Plex remote features broke... I can now longer control Plex running on my TV. Which i was able to do a few weeks back. Fix the remote and I'll give 5 starts next time

What just happened to the latest Android TV update? It was released, bringing it in line with the months-old Android mobile client, then a subsequent update (a day later!) seems to have removed all the new UI features. The UNO interface, released in August, is still present, but all the advanced controls and UI improvements for playing media has vanished without an explanation. This is very un-Plex. Like another reviewer, I've been a PlexPass member for many years, and I'm disappointed to see the quality of the product declining. Constant UI changes and half-baked updates have downgraded my once five-star review to two stars. And that second star is only because I'm hoping for a return to form (and function).

Better than nothing, but less video compatibility than PC/Roku/other devices. Devs have a history of ignoring well-known issues. New bugs with every bugfix release. Certain video files that work on other Plex devices repeatedly refuse to stream or stream incorrectly in the app (e.g. with double-speed video, but regular speed audio. New bug today: The "rewind 10 seconds" button now jumps to a random point in an entirely different video! I really expect more developer support from a paid app.

Once this was a great app. Each update has claimed to 'fix' something, but all they seem to do is remove features that I have been using. I won't be renewing my Plex pass next month because their "updates" have made the app too difficult for intended purpose. What once took two bottom presses now takes seven, and it doesn't even work properly because of 'known bugs'. Bring back a real offline-mode.

To those reading this: it's time to google *Plex replacements" and "Plex alternatives". The new Plex desktop application is permanently frozen for me. The Android app had several very useful features removed (remote control for instance). The web player often freezes with "2 hours" listed for episodes that are 30 minutes. UI update recently increased the click count to get simple tasks done by a factor of 3.

I paid for this app a long time ago, sadly I've stopped using it because there's just too many better options. I really liked plex but it's become too labor intensive to get working at all and even then it's unreliable just look at all the other reviews. I really hope you take a good look at this as a hole and remake it back to its former glory. The name is out there but if more and more can't use it what's it really worth?

The UI changes every week, and casting via the app works, but is an extremely clunky experience. Focus on stability and performance. Quit it with the UI overhauls nobody asked for, and the random new features nobody uses. For example, playing and pausing when casting via Chromecast sometimes takes several seconds. Hitting the 'back 10 seconds' button sometimes starts the movie over. So does seeking anywhere in the movie. Changing the bitrate or subtitle options sometimes crashes the player.

The UI is TERRIBLE! You get 'News' on your homescreen!? To get to my TV shows, I have to: Click menu > click 'more' > click TV shows. This is so incredibly stupid I don't even have the words to describe it. When playing an episode it works great, though. But please give me my movies and TV shows on my start screen!!

What an awful update. Used to be great but now browsing my music library is so sluggish it's pretty much unusable. Why development effort is spent on an unnecessary redesign that breaks things instead of fixing actual issues is beyond me. It is sad that I will have to find an alternative and won't renew my Plex Pass unless Plex manages to turn things around.

Owned for years, bought lifetime sub. Never ending issues, with playlists and sync content to android or iphone. Mostly finds metadata. Now they took feature off playing content offline on your phone. They force there podcast and web news on you. And devices and server dont work right unless you have internet. I got to have on my nas which i dont want connected to wan. And like to be able to sync to phones so i dont have to use data. Looks like im going to give up on them. And switch to spotfy .

As a lifetime plex pass user, I'm more and more disappointed with the whole plex "experience". The 500 character limit here is not nearly enough to summarize all the problems I had over the years, and it's getting worse. You look at the support forum; at all the ignored threads about problems persisting for 2- 4 years; the cries for missing basic features; and you ask yourself: was this a good investment? The only thing keeping me and a lot of users with plex is the lack of good alternatives.

Version 7.24 broke A LOT of features offline. I use this app specifically for offline syncing. Music offline is really broken. You can't shuffle and songs playing a song in an album does not load the next. It also is using a lot of battery in the background. Why am I paying for this service, just to have needless UI updates break things? 🤔

It's such a clunky disorganized mess of an app. Its awkward to sync content. The tab animations are strange. Sometimes the sweep left sometime right and sometimes when you press back it closes the app. Just clean it up and stop modifying layout every update! It does what it's supposed to do however. Bring back the offline viewing switch.

Audio just stops randomly during playback, sometimes resuming in a few seconds, sometimes not (using direct play from a server with 2 way gigabit and I can see the whole file is being transferred well before this happens). Play/pause/next/prev from Bluetooth headphones doesn't work at all. Really disappointing for a service I just paid money for when the free subsonic app works way better in comparison.

Simply put it doesn't work to stream remotely. All my config is correct - if I log in via Web page everything is fine, only bit I can't test is link between app and but assuming data not flowing correctly. To be fair if I delete the app and reinstall then it does work... for one track. This works great at home and integrates well but without remorse access I'm left to carry my mp3 player or pay subscription to listen to the music I already own

As of 11-18-2019 the new update is great, I'm hoping the caching issue is gone... With the new interface/update you are forced to play cached content before streaming (setting, advanced, player) BUT now you CANNOT add to your playlists. Turning off cached before streaming, now I can add to playlists... But now I'm using data again. Please allow add to playlist with using cached data.

Fundamentally broken. Certain shows for no reason will not play on the android app. It will simply go back to the show or movie description screen during remote playback. But on local network plays fine. I have been waiting for a fix for this for years and it has never been resolved.

Probably worst paid streaming app I ever used. Strange settings, playback sometimes works, sometimes not, sometimes it took extremely long to start movie even if i use original quality (no convert) and on same fast local network with powerfull server pc :( I had AirVideo and Stream To Me on my iPad and they were great. This app is pain.

Latest version removed offline mode. Not happy. This is now completely useless. Considering cancelling my plex pass since syncing and playing music offline from my phone is the only reason I have it. Without a dedicated offline mode I may as well just use a free music service. Oh and tidal can crawl up it's own rectum and die.

Seems to get harder to find movies with major updates... so frustrating. Takes way too much time to get to the library you want. There is way too many steps involved. The old layout was quick and simple and very user friendly, this new layout is far from that.

The HOME screen constantly resets on Android phones and tablets (irrespective of updates). The Fire TV Stick HOME screen almost never loads on first access, you've to click on a library and return HOME to see it. Since several versions we lost the ability to EDIT the order of sources (which seem to constantly jump around now anyway, so what's the point?). The new update (to coincide with UNO) is a welcome update, but basic things need fixing. The Plex ecosystem is still supreme and gets 5 stars

Latest update broke my favorite feature: shuffling artists in downloaded library. It allowed me to get a random mix of my music without using any data. It's the biggest reason I'm a Plex Pass subscriber. If it doesn't get fixed soon, you can count on that subscription being cancelled.

Randomly skips to next episode. Navigation is a chore, keeps episode on deck that I have already seen. Sometimes video freezes but audio continues, or audio continues outside of app after having terminated the video. Bought the activation for €5, and what do I have to show for it? A broken app, that's what. Doesn't matter if I'm on the WiFi or 4G, these problems always happen.

Rating this one star until the music feature works, it's been a known and acknowledged problem for literal years that the music part is broken and randomly stops your music every 3-4 songs. Yet we get updates pushing tidal and other services. Fix the broken stuff before adding new things that cost money! Unacceptable for an app and service that charges monthly. Update: the app went from frustrating, to literally *the worst app I've ever used*

Occasional audio issues when switching to Bluetooth but otherwise a decent player. Needs better integration to Android Auto. New version just spins and spins, doesn't have an offline mode so I can even play my synced music. Wish I hadn't paid for a plexpass. Time to find a new app/server combo

I have to pay for it now??? In the beginning certain features were blocked due to it being premium but I could still watch my shows that I had on my computer now I can't do anything but watch a minute-and-a-half intro of each episode or movie and that's it this thing is useless now

Edit:Was 5 stars, latest update broke library radio. .... Love this app. Great to be able to access my music from anywhere. Setting up the player server is pretty straightforward, and remote access does not require any dynamic management to access remotely.

It would be great if it didn't keep pushing stuff I don't want in my face. How do I get rid of the nag about Tidal? Edit 201910: Looking at the reviews Plex is going downhill constantly. It is still a real pain getting support for this product. I can't get answers to problems from Plex even though I have a lifetime subscription. When it works it's an okay application. I've been robbed. The damned thing is a PITA.

Oof, that redesigned player was awful, good thing you rolled it back. Like others have said, recently started freaking out went turning on local subtitles when didn't before. Re-ordering sidebar nav broken. Continue watching (TV) is now in the number three slot for some reason with no way to reorder? (Shield TV)

If it works don't fix it. That new design wasn't necessary and it's not better than before. Rather worst actually. And I now have a lot of problem with the synched contents. I sometimes have to go offline to be able to play it at all.

Not sure if bug or not. But unless I force stop, the app drains my battery. I haven't used the app since last full charge yet it's used 16% of my battery, but then also states that that since the last full charge it's had 0mins active use and 0mins background use.

UI is a bit rough and could do with better features and functionality as there's too much handholding by some of the organization, but the base service provided is still excellent. Hard to give the app a higher review.

. continues to get slower and less reliable and more bloated with every update. galaxy s10. Update: latest bs is jerky video and saying my connection to server is too slow.. then freezing every minute indefinitely.. ok..i have a gigabit line from server to an accesspoint where my phone can speedtest at 480/22.. but cant stream 7 megabits

I mostly use this app for music. Before the recent update I had to actually toggle on "offline" mode which was bad enough, but after the update the offline button is now gone and I can't find the local music unless I use Android auto which has a slightly less confusing ux.

Costs money to watch your own movies. It lets you think you can watch your own stuff by loading everything, and then at the last second, before the video starts tells you it will only load one minute of the video unless you pay a fee.

Update is nice and generally works well. But, they got rid of the playback speed option when listen to audio. I mainly use this app to listen to audiobooks. This loss of feature seriously hurts my user experience.

The app stopped loading any library since the last update. Unsure if it is due to being unable to connect to the server I am hosting, even though I am using manual connection in the same local network.

Was a great music player / server, however they've just ruined the app... I should say I have no interest in the TV functionality which has grown to dominate the platform. PS Selecting 'Home - Menu - Reset to defaults' got the app usable again... No idea what the update had done

Update: Like magic it just started working. This version won't connect to my server even after all troubleshooting steps are taken. Another Android phone with an older version, a Roku TV and my iPad are all working well.

Since receiving the most recent update, I am unavailable to Chromecast! What's the point if I cannot Chromecast!!!! I really like this new look as apposed to the last but without being able to Chromecast, this becomes useless! Please fix ASAP!

The app has been working for years and suddenly yesterday it stopped being able to cast to chromecast. It connects but then gives an error that it is unable to play the media.

"unable to play media" for the last week on Plex Shield and the android app. Love your products, own a Plex pass but had to write this to get your attention. Please fix this! Only work around is uninstalling updates.

I love Plex but I'm tired of a consistently crappy mobile app! Crashes and general bugginess have been a theme of this client for years...I'm over it. Can I listen to at least 30 minutes of music just once!

Have to pay to use app on tablet that is free on Roku, Sony Tvs, and Fire Stick. Otherwise can only watch for one minute in trial mode. Plenty of other apps that can access my NAS media server without the activation fee.

Made a purchase but since a recent update I have to repurchase it. Contacted support and still waiting for issue to resolve. Will update review if they let me restore my purchase and this problem doesn't happen again. Until then...

Music sync would be great if the plex player was any good for music. I wish I could sync music through plex and then play it in another music app. Using plex an Android Auto is a huge pain also. It pushes tidal way too much.

What? Why in te world is there no shuffle button for music? No, I'm not going to make an entire playlist for the single session when I want two artists combined. That's minutes wasted when it should be seconds.

This was a beautiful app until last week. The latest update is broken, I can't open any media on my Nvidia Shield. Need a way to roll back to the previous version

What happened to offline mode? I just bought lifetime premium especially for offline use cases, and suddenly 2 updates later I got "you're offline" message while trying to watch downloaded content. Not cool, guys.

Getting bored of having to keep changing my home screen to how i want it and then it updates putting everything YOU want on it. It's getting so annoying having to change all my devices time and time again that i may unsubscribe and find an alternative product

This app use to be pretty good but after the last update it won't connect to Chromecast... Not sure what the issue is but please fix it (also not a huge fan of the new layout but whatever)

Android plex app has tons of issues with lack of support. Running into constant crashing, inconsistent picture within picture. Sometimes stuck on infinite buffering when trying to first play a video.

The app has been great the last few years but since the latest update I can't cast from my phone to TV (google Chromecsst). Does anyone have a fix?

Overall good but still have significant connectivity issues. Disconnects frequently. Generally unable to control playback when casting to TV after playing and app goes idle. Fails to reconnect

I'm really not happy with the redesign. I have to go through new menus and hit more to see my libraries. Isn't this the core use of Plex for most users? Why is this main functionality hidden?

The DVR is working again. I had a big problem on Nvidia Shield. After some updates and I was very upset after paying for a lifetime subscription. I hope it stays this way . Very buggy

Plex PLEASE FIX! The new update does not allow a connection to chromecast! This app quickly looses its appeal if chromecast cannot be used! FIX THIS PLEASE! One star till it gets fixed!

Has stopped playing for 6 days now on Shield: "unable to play media". So the halo Android TV device has not worked with any video from Plex for 6 days. This is impressively bad.

Its a bad player. I have to keep reinstalling the app for some videos to play. I i know its not my server cuz when i do reinstall the app on my phone the offending videos play just fine. Until it happens to different ones...

Downgraded from 4 to 3 stars because today's 'update' has downgraded the app. In live TV the ability to filter upcoming movies by channel is gone. Removing useful functionality hardly constitutes an improvement.

Stop changing the layout of the app. I get sick and tired of having to constantly re learn the different layouts. The most recent version won't let me shuffle play library. Get your sht together guys

Why have you removed the tabs at the bottom of the app. When you have a large library it becomes a bother to scroll through the entire list. Please re instate the tabs

Nothing more than UI/UX. VLC is still the best. Adding subtitles automatically is not working properly. If there's any workaround, please share it, but it still hard to setup. Some external subtitles aren't showing. VLC does great job in this. I could not view samba storage attached to my router but VLC does. It is not the Plex server I was expecting. It's to hard to setup. I would definitely buy it if those issues will be solved.

Changing from one to four stars. Great updates lately have fixed most of my original issues. Thank you! Please keep it up!

Having problems all the time, specially server connection. Everytime they release a new update, nothing works anymore. 2 weeks without service...

Plex is more trouble than it's worth. Long-standing problems never seem to get fixed (sync, playback on older devices, playing with parental controls in place). I paid for a lifetime plexpass to get all the features. Paying somebody to shove a red hot poker ... would have been better use of that money. If you just want to use Plex on your home network it's great. The minute you try to take content with you you're probably going to be out of luck.

Stopped working. As soon as bought the Android unlock, stopped working and stays on the home menu as if is refreshing. Contacted support and no response. Not recommend for Android

Latest update seems to have broken casting to Chromecast. Booo. Plex is nice when it works but things seem to be constantly breaking. Needs better QA.

"Don't fix it if it isn't broken". This was once a great app which worked well. Now, it is just way too complicated to do the very same thing that it used to do. Makes no sense.

This app worked fine for years, but over the last several months I can't get it to play any tv shows, and movies only occasionally work, unless I download them to my phone first. I though maybe there was a problem with my media, but plex works fine on my tv and laptop, and I also keep an separate old version of plex on my phone, and that works fine too, so it's not a firewall issue or anything. I keep hoping for an update, but plex seems to have a reputation for ignoring problems.

This app has become the bane of my existence! In 6 months it had become so messed up, I literally can't watch anything as of today, without jumping around constantly in the menus. Hit pause and go to resume, resumes a totally different episode from the same point in it's timeline. So you have to navigate in the menus back to the episode you were watching. Hit back 10 secs and it starts playing totally different episode in the same section of the timeline. Again navigating back. Ridiculous!!!!!!!

*This review is strictly written from the perspective of the music functionality. I don't use any of its other features, so I can't comment on those.* On the surface, plex seems perfect. I can sync songs from my desktop, to a server on my network, to my phone. Great, but the problem is that this app (and really the feel of plex in general) sucks. I'm not even sure where to start with this app. The UI is garbage and makes no sense. Trying to find where to sync a music library was beyond painful, and simply trying to find where to shuffle play the whole library was akin to playing a game of where's waldo. You can't sort a playlist (though that seems to be left out of plex entirely for unknown reasons). The notification bar is not persistent, so if you are pause a song and go to another app to do something else, it will likely disappear forcing you to reopen the app. If you are paused for too long, it will lose connection to the server forcing you to completely restart your playing even though all of your songs are synced to your device. The player itself is abysmal and doesn't feature things such as an equalizer. It also can't seem to play m4a files even though it states that it has support for it. This all wouldn't be too big of an issue if I could just use plex as a glorified download and sync app but nope. Every single song is stored in its own folder that is named as a number, and has the music file itself labeled generically. This makes it impossible to use the music app of my choice. I rarely write reviews, but this app is so awful and annoyed me so much that I felt I had to advise anyone against using it.

This app was one of the best in the store, and on top of that it was free! However, the dev's are beginning to lose sight of what this was meant to be. I've been a plex pass subscriber since I found the app. I think it's a great way to support the Devs. Lately they've just made the app much, much worse. I've had it crash on my TV at least 12 times this past week, barely works on my ps4 pro. Playback is buggy, quality is hindered and it overheats my phone every single time. Tldr: was good. Not.

Love this app. I have put all of my DVDs and blurays into digital form and have them on one laptop. Can now access them from anywhere as well as cast them to my tv. Playlists, movie info added to your library. Great great app.

App intermittently works and interfaces with the server. Unable to connect to server on app to cast to TV. The web version works.

I love Plex, I'm a Plex plus subscriber, but some of the issues and limitations can be very frustrating. For instance this app is it has very poor connection management. It buffers quite a bit even when it has a strong signal in close range. Apps need to a lesson from Pandora. It hardly ever buffers even with poor connections that are barely in range.

Love this program but latest update seems to have completely wiped ability to chromecast, rendering it useless. Please fix asap.

Great app experience. Sometimes has episode skip issues when seeking, crashes more often than I would like. One of a kind service that provides what they say

No matter what I cannot get plex to stream my local media files, it Use to work great and now it's junk. Using Xcast and it works perfectly

This remains one of the most frustrating apps ever. 90% of the time, it crashes on launch. 90% of the time, it's fine on the second launch. Trying to keep things sync'd is a full-time job. After each play, I need to go to the web interface to mark the episode as played, then go to the app to make sure it got the message, and fetches the next episode. This should just work without babysitting. Behavior in this area is so inconsistent, I can't recommend it to non-nerds. That said, Plex as a whole is marvelous, provided you use the web interface instead of the app.

Basic functions are never fixed. Constantly skips episodes, or stops 2 minutes into one. Developers are not even trying to fix this issues, which are NEW issues. Older versions did not have these problems with BASIC functions. They are focused more on adding fluff content. Fix the basic functions Plex. Then add the fluff.

Last update broke the offline playback. It doesn't go to the next song, just stops.

I've used Plex for years (free) but due to lengthy illness I haven't used in more than 9 mos. I was just getting ready to reinstall it (& purchase) but after reading the comments, I am reevaluating the decision to use Plex. (Thanks to all for your comments.) I rarely purchase/download anything anymore without reading the reviews .... except the time I bought all new SAMSUNG appliances and ALL of them had to be returned!! But I digress 🙄

Litteraly unusable for anything with subtitles. Has to transcoded everything which makes everything feel slow even on my gaming pc. Also mobile app sucks and you can't use it without having a subscription. (Which I had for one year, before switching to emby, which can btw stream videos with subtitles without transcoding them...)

New release has effed up continuous play. It used to just continue to play the next song after I play one. No longer

What's happened!!! I have been using this app to play music from my cloud home with no problems. I have tried to use it last night and although it can see the drive it isn't showing any of the music. I thought it might be my phone,,,, but no same on my tablet. Utter rubbish

Very disappointing. Instead of searching my library if searches internet content it wants to push upon me. I can see what l've synced locally but i can call it up to watch it without scrolling through all my media becuase like above says search is useless. Even more dispointing. I have to play synced copies of my media because online versions have a desynced audio. Its become harder and harder to get the App to load the synced version over trying to stream.

When I "sync" my videos I think they are downloaded so not using data but this app used most of my monthly data so guess not. Not very user friendly

PLEX is the best in home media management I have found so far. I don't have a large home but I do have a large media collection. The interface seems best suited for medium size collections but this is a common flaw. The local streaming is as good as your LAN will allow. I have not tried the remote features. All in all a very good system.

With the latest update, synced albums no longer play. When you start an album it only plays the first track then stops

Update has caused issues for me playing offline. I can't choose the option to go offline and play my downloaded content.

New updates are bad. Pls stop trying to look like Netflix and go back to alphabetically listing my media on the home screen. New update also means I can't chromecast from android anymore

I like Plex, but subtitles styling keeps getting reset and there aren't enough settings available : the "huge" size barely looks "normal" on my tablet, the text has either a tiny border or an ugly background without margins (I'd like a decent border instead, like most other video players). I would also like to set subtitle and audio languages globally, having to set those for each video is annoying.

Built my own plex server and the app ties in seamlessly with it for movies, tv, music and pictures. Well worth the subscription to plex pass too. The biggest issue with the the users. People don't know how to use it correctly and expect to be spoon fed info. Google is your friend on this. Ask and you WILL find. Keep up the good work Plex devs

requires following permissions on your android device.

view network connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.

view Wi-Fi connections
Allows the app to view information about Wi-Fi networking, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and name of connected Wi-Fi devices.

allow Wi-Fi Multicast reception
Allows the app to receive packets sent to all devices on a Wi-Fi network using multicast addresses, not just your phone. It uses more power than the non-multicast mode.

find accounts on the device
Allows the app to get the list of accounts known by the phone. This may include any accounts created by applications you have installed.

full network access
Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet.

run at startup
Allows the app to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the phone and allow the app to slow down the overall phone by always running.

prevent phone from sleeping
Allows the app to prevent the phone from going to sleep.

modify or delete the contents of your SD card
Allows the app to write to the SD card.

In-App billing
In-app Billing on Google Play provides a straightforward, simple interface for sending In-app Billing requests and managing In-app Billing transactions using Google Play.

receive data from Internet
Allows apps to accept cloud to device messages sent by the app's service. Using this service will incur data usage. Malicious apps could cause excess data usage.

read Google service configuration
Allows this app to read Google service configuration data.
