"Private Internet Access, one of Lifehacker readers' favorite VPN service providers, makes it easy to surf privately and securely from anywhere." – Lifehacker.com

"There have been several Editors' Choice VPN services recently, as one product tops the next, but Private Internet Access out-performs and out-features the competition. With 4.5 stars, Private Internet Access sets the bar high and is truly the Editors' Choice, trumping all our previous favorites." -- PC Mag

“When shopping for a VPN service, it is recommended to find a service that does not log its customers’ traffic and prevents an anonymity-unmasking issue known as IPv6 leakage. Private Internet Access carries that level of security.” – Wired.com

Why does the app need camera permissions?
The camera is used only when you scan a QR code, nowhere else. Earlier versions of Android (before 6.0) will incorrectly report that we need this at all times.

GDPR compatibility
This application only send username and encrypted passwords to our servers as part of using this app. During signups, we also collect user-email. We not collect and/or store any other user information.

Reviews From google play store

PIA is a VPN for the "average user" done right! It's apps are visually appealing and it gives you just the right amount of info on activity. Even better than that, it just works. Every time. Quickly connects and I haven't had to troubleshoot it once. Just click connect and let it do its thing. I do tend to lose about 50% of my speeds when connected, but I've never noticed a lag or slow down in any real world use. If you're looking for a secure, cheap, easy to use VPN; pay for this one!

Superb everything. Top of the game in every aspect. Super fast, reliable, never let me down, and best of all amazing customer service. My phone went kaput and I had to do a factory reset. The customer service (Devin.S.) was very fast in replying and getting me back on track to full coverage. Highly recommended app. Thank you guys.

11/19/19 Went down to 2 Stars. Whatever this last update was, slows my whole phone down terribly & phone unusuable when PIA is connected 9/14/19 Was pretty good until the recent update. Disconnects more often. The connection is much much slower in the past few days (I use Denver a lot), & my battery life in the past week or so has taken a serious dive - especially the past few days. Kinda defeats the purpose if i can't allow the app to stay connected b/c it drains my battery within 2 or 3 hours.

I can't think of less than five stars. Feature filled application. I tried several VPN apps and providers. Few best features I like in this app is the DNS selection. The app has option to select custom DNS of our choice instead of forcing the user to use to VPN provider's DNS. I always use Alternate DNS which is one of the best public DNS. Very competitive prices for annual subscription and we can use up to ten devices. Supports DD-WRT flashed routers. Windows browser based VPN is easy to use.

One thing I noticed is I frequently have no data connection and when I open the PIA app, my VPN IP is blank. I have to hit the power button to turn VPN off than on again for it to reconnect. This is with good cellular service. Please look into this as it happens at least once a day. It's great to have a company that listens to their customer reviews! They added the kill switch back to the main interface page!

The service is great... when it actually connects. If your main use for this is on your phone, go with a different provider if you're not locked in already, less you want to forever wait 2 seconds between connection attempts.

Love the app but if I have it running at all times and in the background then my phone battery from 100% (3,100 mAh) does in under 2 hours. And battery says app used 85% of battery. Otherwise app is awesome would recommend, but they need to update it to be slightly more energy efficient on mobile

Unfortunately I must lower my review of this app. A year ago it would have been a perfect five stars, but recently PIA has been bought by an unreputable adware company. As such, I cancelled my PIA subscription, and will be looking for VPN services elsewhere.

Have used this app for years. Recently, of not the most recent update (5 Nov 2019 today) my phone is so slow it just crawls. I don't mean internet speeds, just general using apps . Disconnecting the VPN resolves this. Something has fundamentally changed on the working of the app.... Please revert back to the way it was!

Useless VPN for speed, took my 200mbps broadband epeed down to 50 mbps using UK servers speed in US locations even worse maxing out at 150mbps. When I contacted support I was told that was good speed for a VPN and to try tweaking settings and servers, not what expected in paid service. I tried and failed to get a refund they offer before signing up, they want a receipt number for the play ▶ store transaction which never received and after multiple attempts they won't honour the refund.

Solid VPN for both phone and laptop. Good speeds, and if speeds do slow down switching servers usually fixes it. Been using this VPN for over a month and the phone app does not randomly disconnect like other VPN's I've used.

This app does not work on my phone. It doesn't matter where I "connect to", the apps I'm using still detect where I really am. I am not happy because I have no issues when using my laptop.

At times it doesn't connect. Tapping the shortcut to activate VPN at times doesn't work and when I turn it in I cant turn it off without doint a force close on it. App is useless and only works if I double check and go to the app settings than the shortcut.

Overall, the service was great. Recently reset my phone, reinstalled PIA but can't get passe the "Connection Request" prompt screen. The "OK" option isn't accessible to establish connection. I've reinstalled the app twice.

This was great but since the last update it's been horrible. 25+ mbs rarely runs better than 1mbs when on VPN. Looks like performance drop coincides with the company being bought out by kape. Go elsewhere

Why doesn't your app work when my tablet is moving. Deactivate, why?. I'm finding VPN by Private Internet Access not reliable if I'm in my car, moving. If I remember I'll shut VPN by PIA off when driving so the Killswith is not activated. I'm not buying another, the Devil you know is better than the Devil don't know, and I've already paid for the year.

I was wondering, why did my phone became so slow all of a sudden. Then i realize that this always happens everytime I turned the vpn on, what the f? Please fix it

Simply fantastic. Lots of encryption options, lots of servers, rock solid connections, and very easy to use.

I use this vpn on my desktop without any issues but it will not let me log in on the mobile app. Tried relogging with the same information on desktop and it works. Mobile app will not work.

Main problem: constantly resetting. That means, that the app stops running and after a restart all settings - like encryption - got reset.

Absolutely flawless over a period of years. Cannot find or think of any faults. Excellent & intuitive app. Rock solid stable & fast connections.

Such a great VPN... speed reduction is minimal, and I'm so pleased with the ease of integration with Android system settings as well. All around a great buy! Bought 3 year sub around 5 months ago and never looked back...

Fantastic customer service. I had a subscription issue and they promptly responded to my emails and were very helpful. Will definitely continue using PIA.

Nothing from the Internet loads when I turn on the VPN. (Internet works only if I turn the VPN off) VPN was working fine before the update. //edit: Has been fixed for me.

Dev team is responsive to feedback and iterates quickly. Feels fresh and always works well and pretty fast for me.

You can't set up your network manuelly .. kinda makes it useless to me as I'm stuck with limited Network that blocks websites by proxy and that proxy is exactly what i want to bypass

The VPN itself is great and if you have PIA on PC you may as well use this app but if you're looking for a good mobile app go elsewhere, this one is a glitchy annoying mess.

$$$$ and a waste of money. bought so that I could access my cable company app when traveling in the USA. select a cdn city and somehow the cable app knows I'm outside of canada.

Service have improved recently so redoing my review. One request I have though is for the vpn to reconnect when you leave trusted WiFi. It disconnects when I get home, if like it to reconnect when I leave.

Works great as a VPN, but my VPN configuration settings completely reset every time I restart my phone.

Can't stream Netflix while connected, when i bought it, it was advertised Netflix streaming friendly. I'm changing to another VPN when the subscription ends

Moved onto another VPN for mobile security, implementation of fixes and features were not quickly available for a modern needs.

Used to be good, but sold out to a dishonest malware company for money (Kape Technologies). Subscribers beware!

It does not work, it keeps charging you even after having paid for the subscription.

This service works fine on my laptop and desktop but using this app on mobile is basically trash, speeds are so slow it is unusable

Battery consumption is really high :( It's about 50%. Debug info ID is C194F.

PIA Bought by Kape Tech = Game Over. Abandon ship, switch to another VPN provider immediately! I have used PIA and it was great but I can't not recommend it anymore because Kape Tech can't be trusted.

Has been the best VPN we habe tried, far fewer issues from people abusing the service than we have experiemced with other VPNs

Used to be great. Now it's always slow or blocked.

Unusable. Tapping the prompt to grant permission does nothing. Cancel works but OK doesn't. Will update review.

When I purchased the app, it worked well enough even though they didn't have as many server locations as I would like. At that point I would give the app 4 stars. For the lasr month or so, I get multiple disconnects. I guess this is from their new and improved update/updates. New and improved margin since they sold out to a questionable buyer. I don't recommend this app.

Please stop killing connections established by other VPN apps. Especially since app does not try to connect itself.

Solid VPN. App works well. Plus hasn't been in the news for being hacked like others.

This latest installation update won't let me reinstall it as a clean install. I get a skinny screen and can't input my info. What a waste of money!!!

Good until it sold out to shady Cyberghost without warning to customers. Avoid like the plague, Cyber ghost is buying it to obfuscate its shady practices.

Service hasn't worked right for a few weeks. Slow or stalled internet when turned on.

Unable to login on Nvidia shield, every attempt ends with the app just closing. Please fix asap!!

After their recent acquisition I no longer trust PIA with any of my data. Moving on.

Used to work on my Sony tablet, but won't login any more.

Sucks battery (30% in my case) and many sites prohibit using PIA

Where have the mace and ad killing options gone? Very useful and why I used this and not the competition

I used to think this service was excellent, until the recent update, which lost all my settings! Now the app forgets to startup automatically, forgets which apps to exclude and forgets to activate the kill-switch. Why do all VPN providers do this? If it ain't broke, don't fix it! It was working fine and you just had to break everything for what? A shiny new look and feel? F*** your look and feel! I want an app that works! If you absolutely must upgrade the app, hire competent coders.

Having some issues... PIA seems to want to connect all the time even if I don't ask it to. Always on isn't on and I can literally do nothing and it starts to try and connect. That can be fine tuned if I could actually load the trusted network lists to add the networks that don't need it like my home wifi. Looking to change this to 5 stars if we can get this resolved.

They take your money and then limit services initially presented. Avoid this app!!!

Awesome App. 2 years now. Just gets better.

There used to be an off setting with a dragable switch. Now hitting the big power button icon just puts the app into an ambiguous state where it still seems to be connected. There is no status message explaining what's happening. Please don't remove features like an off button from your app. I had to go into settings and manually force kill.

8 out of 10 times when I try to start the app from button in notifications bar it won't start. It just loops on "authenticating" then "getting client information". Only way to connect is to open the app itself. What's the purpose of the button in notifications tray if it doesn't work? Regarding the VPN itself - I like it. Stable connection and good speed.

Used to be great, now it absolutely slaughters your battery. It will be fine one moment and then next thing you know you will be down 20%. I left it running in the background while at work and it would just suck out all of the juice going from 70% to 0% in an hour or so. I looked at the battery usage graph in Settings and it is definitely this app causing the problem with sometimes over 40% usage of my battery since taking it off the charger. Such a shame, it was fantastic before the last update

The most informative VPN when it comes to exactly what is being used to protect your data not to mention the options you have to choose from when it comes to customizing your level of security so you may tailor your protection to suit your internet habits. I've tried numerous other apps and am always comparing the competitor to the bar setter, P.I.A. the proof in in the licensing fineprint. Good work P.I.A. crew

Not too shabby for being an internet condom, it's the Trojan of VPN's :P

Works great (presumably) when it works, but several times a day it disconnects and needs to be manually reconnected. The process of connecting is glitchy. I now can't access the internet through pia though Android and pia both will report that pia is active. Please fix the reliability of the app and (to a lesser extent) the network in Canada to earn a 4/5 star rating

Running PIA on all my devices for about 2.5 years. I have had very few glitches. There are times the connection gets interrupted and I think most times it is my IS P or the other provider of what I am watching. I change the port and reconnect and seems to do the trick. Good service from my experience.

Less & less reliable lately. Several times updates have completely broken my internet configuration both on my Android phone & Windows 10 machine requiring far too much time fixing my configurations after updates. I am a HUGE advocate of full-time VPN, but STOP screwing with visual "upgrades" & get PIA servers more more reliably for existing customers. Reinstalled again so for the moment seems to be working again. Needs better VPN obfuscation settings since I'm finding more sites blocking VPN

Great app. 1 annoying issue. Every time the app updates it losses my settings. For example I have the Kodi remote yatse setup to bypass the VPN as it needs lan to reach my htpc. Unfortunately when the app updates it loses that setting. Same goes for hue and a bunch of other apps. Fix is just to go and add them back. But this is minorly annoying and a fix would be fantastic.

Works well, slower connection with it on but that is expected. Bottlenecks at peak times in UK. Very pleased overall, used them for 6years now. Equipment located in the UK means data logging by Law. UK servers are in Amsterdam. Do NOT think this will make you anonymous or untraceable, it just provides privacy. Definitely recommended over other VPNs as this one accepts PayPal too, so highly regarded. Feedback always welcomed by their tech people and they make changes based on suggestions.

The app has always worked great, alart from.sometimes the radio button shows it's off whilst it's connected. howver I'm gibing it lower stars as the newest update, while it looks prettier is missing a key button, DISABLE INTERNET KILLSWITCH. Really annoying that this is removed. The notification bar tells me I can disable the killswitch. But the old app let me.do it manually without entering settings to sisable it permanently. Please fix this and add the toggle back to the main screen.

Great features, competitive price... PIA just keeps topping itself with each (very regular) update to each of its wonderfully designed clients. The Android app in particular allows for extremely granular control of your VPN connection, but keeping the defaults in place will protect most users adequately. PIA is continually adding new global servers. *Minor note: in the Windows client, I noticed that it seems no U.S. servers support port forwarding (yet.) But most or all Canadian servers do.

I connected PIA VPN, I opened a browser, and continued on browsing for about 1 hour, thinking I was protected by VPN. After I closed the browser, I opened PIA VPN app: the app showed VPN was disconnected. So, I was browsing without the protection of VPN. Killswitch was ON, but clearly not working. Also, PIA VPN never attempted to reconnect: BAD!!! PUT "AUTO-CONNECT" OPTION IN SETTINGS!!! IPVanish - the best - has "Auto-connect" in settings!!!!

Ever since last update Pandora says I'm in an unsupported country even though I'm using United States' servers. I submitted a report but I chose the version 4.0 option when I'm actually on version 3.0. Sorry. Otherwise, my year long subscription is almost up and I'm definitely renewing. Thank you, PIA for your service. As soon as Pandora starts working again with PIA I will give 5 stars.

I feel like this app and service have become third rate. The servers have consistently been failing to provide necessary bandwidth on wifi and cellular network connections. Running a speed test shows low ping and high bandwidth without the vpn, and decent ping with terrible bandwidth with the vpn. Often resulting in absolutely no available bandwidth and an inability to use the internet without disabling my OS kill switch and turning off the vpn. Used to be so much better.

Simply the best most secure VPN.

Slows mobile data connection to the point where it is unusable, making this only good for connecting to public WiFi which is not worth 7 dollars a month when I can just use Opera's free VPN for the rare times I'm doing that. No free trial means I just wasted my money, never using this again

Be wary of the T&Cs. PIA can remove a Server location at will. I purchased a 1 year subscription because of them advertising that they have a Server in South Africa. The RSA Server which was my sole reason for joining PIA, was removed 7 months into my subscription so now I have 5 Months left of useless subscription.

Doesn't reliably connect with servers.

Using PIA on all my devices for 7 months. The PIA app for android works flawlessly. PIA has the best unlimited data prices bar none, imo the negative reviews are from PIA's competitors due to their prices being so much higher. I've used the top VPN's for 8+ years. PIA is top notch with excellent customer support.

Great VPN I have it on my pc as well

The VPN itself works well but if I have the app open and close it it disconnects from vpn and when I don't even have the app on it will sometimes just disconnect and not reconnect. I have allowed it though my battery saver so nothing it limiting it. Please fix this as I just want to leave my phone without it disconnecting.

The good thing is the subscription always expires on the last day of the month i.e let suppose i buy 1 year subscription on 2nd January 2020 then it will complete 1yr on 1st Jan 2021 but the subscription remain active throughtout the month and expire on the last day of the month.

Some apps on the Samsung Galaxy S9 (Amazon, AT&T hot spot and Credit Karma) not working while PIA is on even after they are unchecked in per app settings. Update: Jimmy W. in customer service showed me how to change to a different port which cleared up all issues. Thanks for the help. Love the app.

VPN never reconnects after a network switch or internet disconnection. Even though I have "always stay connected" set in my Android settings. Has led me to accidentally browsing pages without protection and having no idea. Was working before, what changed?

Often does not connect. Do not pay too far ahead with these peopl as once you do the once good service magically stops and contacting for help is impossible as the app bounces you out after repeated form fills that the app then clears before conecting to help. Any free vpn is better than these people. Avoid so you do not waist your money

Buggy on Note 9 Android Pie 9.0. It won't shut down when I disconnect. I get 2 notifications on the Notification panel 1 is about adding routes even after I disconnect which still shows connected notification. Edit: it is now working thanks to customer support.

I'm losing at least 60% of my internet speed (according to Ookla) when connecting through PIA. Wasn't always like this though. Apps won't update either while PIA VPN is on. Some apps won't work at all when PIA VPN is on.

Love the product. 3 year subscription, I am hooked and always be a supporter. However, the latest ver 3.0 for Android is not great at all. First, it shuts down sporadically when I am on the app. Second, and more importantly, the feature of what server from what country I am in is now gone, it used to be there. I use 'automatic' mode quite often and I use this to tell where I am and if I need to adjust. Hope you guys can re-implement this feature. Thanks. Scott

It seems I can't connect to internet after last update on the mobile phone. When I turn off PIA, connection is always without problem. Used to work great, dunno what's the problem now.

The 'always on' settings seem beyond me to get it working right as the protected ip address seems to drop off constantly until you open the app and it appears again. Am I fully protected?? Other than that, decent app.

The service is alright and works well on my other devices, but the Android app doesn't work well. It keeps forgetting my settings every few days and acts as if it's a fresh install. It's been like this for months. I've also set it up to be always on with one trusted wifi and trusted data connection but it never automatically connects to vpn when on other wifi networks.

This used to be decent but it constantly loses connection /times out and needs to be manually restarted. So really it defeats the entire purpose because you're not actually protected most of the time. Do not download.

Occasionally acts as if it's running for the first time ever, which includes resetting the VPN kill switch to the default "off" position. It almost got me fired. Satisfied otherwise, but that's so huge, I can't always remember to check that setting! 3 stars because still a great value. New design: Good luck closing the app if you have kill switch/auto-reconnect enabled: I gave up and now go straight to Force Stop.

I've been using this app on my pcs for years, and now the mobile app too. It is reliable, has great settings, and has never given me any issues. I particularly like the ping returns so I can pic the fastest location.

Does what it says on the tin. For those who experience trouble with apps updating through the VPN, as I did, try turning on small packets (a compatibility option) in the settings. This fixed the issue for me.

Great VPN. But it uses a handful of battery. Might cause this in an area with a worse connection. Otherwise seems fine as a VPN service. It's worth what I paid.

This is my first time with PIA and will unfortunately be my last. Their servers are so oversaturated with users during peak times it literally leaves no available bandwidth for anyone else. Can't believe I was suckered in for a year with no chance of refund now that it is past the seven days return policy.

They supposedly have 24/7 support yet they've not responded to my simple refund request 14 hours ago, they have poor services and vpn speed

Great, but needs auto updates for all devices and auto connect when devices start ..... sometimes that works ... sometimes it does not. Also, new problem: PIA *disconnects during use* fairy regularly for a few weeks now. Please FIX ?

Excellent. Used it for a year. No complaints

Can't login to mobile app after buying 1 year subscription. Saying user name and password incorrect. Can login at pc but can't download the app. After 2-3% it failed every time. Want my refund right now.

Since the new update I'm having login problems on all my android boxes, also new update seems to be 10 steps back as harder and harder to get any information on the screen. *update* Spot on, just after I have posted this, it is now IMPOSSIBLE to connect to any server!! Also I can not even connect to support due to the fact the UK blocks PIA website!!!!

The best VPN provider out there!

I can't locate the red Killswitch disable button that used to pop up when you disabled the VPN since the 8/21 update. This button is no longer there! I tried, TWICE, to contact support before writing this review but was passed off to beta dept and still got no reply, maybe cause I'm NOT a beta tester? I'll update my review if i ever receive help. The VPN is great, but their help sucks! John...

requires following permissions on your android device.

approximate location (network-based)
Allows the app to get your approximate location. This location is derived by location services using network location sources such as cell towers and Wi-Fi. These location services must be turned on and available to your device for the app to use them. Apps may use this to determine approximately where you are.

view network connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.

view Wi-Fi connections
Allows the app to view information about Wi-Fi networking, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and name of connected Wi-Fi devices.

take pictures and videos
Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation.

connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
Allows the app to connect to and disconnect from Wi-Fi access points and to make changes to device configuration for Wi-Fi networks.

full network access
Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet.

run at startup
Allows the app to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the phone and allow the app to slow down the overall phone by always running.

In-App billing
In-app Billing on Google Play provides a straightforward, simple interface for sending In-app Billing requests and managing In-app Billing transactions using Google Play.
