Great roguelike, easily stands on its own for the great user interface. Solved my issue with the genre. The log can be obstructive at times though, and the game occasionally lags. Can't help but wonder also why animals without hands can't wear HATS or mummy wrappings? I mean a leather cloak I understand, but these don't look like something that should be exclusive to humanoids. It'd add to the lacking animal-companion armor type selection. Other than, great job and keep up the good work!

I played the original Nethack as a kid back in the late 80's, along with Zork, and King's Quest at my friend's house. (Not many people had computers back then!) The video games back then were extremely challenging. Pathos is a great remake of an old weird, but deep classic. It's brutal and confusing, but I like how you're left to discover things for yourself. This game is DEEP. Thank you, Callan, for respecting Intelligence!

A wonderfully difficult rogue like that runs great on even on budget phones. No adds or pop ups, just a ton of races and classes in a dungeon. The controls and UI work great on phone or pc. No ads or way to spend real money in game. This is the mobile game I've been looking for as a pc gamer.

In nethack codex it needs quest but from people who give you quest, now what I mean, when you meet someone like in the minetown, full of people watching, fighting, taking, you need to add a person who gives ya a JOB, like an mystery books you have to solve or something more ENTERTAINING, I know you can do it, you even add some MILITARY since I'm shock a little, because it's an DUNGEON, well next UPDATE make it BIG TIME developers, I keep playing and observe how it goes. SEE YA🤩🤩🤩🤩

Honestly, a pretty good game overall for that dnd aspect and single player combined. I just wish that there is a way to progress outside of the main game itself and get a bit stronger even time I fail a run and more maps wouldn't hurt, but everytime else is perfect.

Best game for a phone. No costs or ads included. If you like old style roguelikes this is for you.

It's free. It's great. It perfectly filters out some of the esoteric parts of nethack to let it function on mobile and I'll just review it relative to nethack. It's 80% nethack and some of the 20% that's gone will be missed, but it principally doesn't hurt it much. Though I wouldn't mind having some fun things like elbereth or wishes back, but their absence is part of the design. The interface is as good as you could possibly expect for such a deep game on mobile. The difficulty curve kind of feels better than nethack in some ways, it's still brutally unforgiving. It's probably my favourite game on the entire app store. Kudos.

This game is an amazing entry into old-school roguelikes and D&D games. It's brutal. It's complicated. Yet it's somehow welcoming to newcomers. It's free. Don't write it off. If you're confused about anything, the in game "help" option explains so much. There is also an avid fan base on Discord and Reddit which is also linked in game. The creator frequently responds to player input publicaly and updates this game. It's become my most played mobile game for the past 2 months as of posting this.

Incredible Nethack fork. Probably better than most other forks and is on mobile, incredible graphics built into it (THIS IS BIG). Normally you need to install the graphics yourself and most tilesets dont look nearly as good as this one. Great interface, normally this game is a pain to play even with a full keyboard, but this is very welcoming. Im probably pushing 60 hours on this thing

  13. goatoad bobson-avatar

The game is fun and difficult at the start, but as you die and progress through the dungeons you get information that will help you along in your next run! The developers clearly put some love into this game, but its a shame that some random spawns ruin this game completely(ex: going down stairs in early floors and being greeted with 10 acid bubbles) After the 3rd run I lost to the wand of death I unistalled. Also losing games at the 19th floor due to an enemy throwing a petrifying potion sucks.

  14. Ron Dolor-avatar

Good game👍 I Got a Suggestion, let us Customize our own Class and Race. Example. A Half Demon Half Angel Race. Of course there should be a Disadvantage and advantage. Hmm, Yea. Points System would do. Like the player is given. Let's say 500pts and the player could use it to choose, Mix and match some characteristics of the Race/Class. Of course, also the way to get more points, Depends on how deep the Player Dive in the dungeon, Level/Karma/etc is also taken to account. I'm out of spce to wrte

This is fun. I greatly enjoy the fusion of a more contemporary interface with this classic game. Particularly on mobile, where nh's control scheme is a bit cumbersome. FTW!

  16. LittleMonsterElla-avatar

This game is really fun. No adds or purchases. Very creative, lots of ways to play (different races and classes with unique skills and abilities), can lose yourself for awhile. A friend recommended it to me and it's my favorite game right now. So random, the game has alot of depth, pretty easy just to play but the more you get into there is just soo much neat and cool things you discover along the way. Recomend this for sure!

One of the most accessible renditions of Nethack (the classic Roguelike) that exists. Made for people whom enjoy classic Roguelikes, with new FUN thrown in. Nethack itself isn't for everyone, but if you go in knowing you're playing a deep but ultimately unfair game with a UI as obtuse as MS Excel, (even with the more convenient touch menus of Pathos) you can have a great time.

  18. Andrew Kerstein-avatar

    Andrew Kerstein

An excellent remix of a legend in the "rougelike" (tactical dungeon crawler) genre... or at least it started its life as one. While Pathos still draws heavily from NetHack and SLASH'EM, it's a distinct and much more user-friendly experience at this stage. Still just as hardcore, though, so expect lots of your adventurers to be eaten by jackals... or giant ants... or dragons... et cetera. Also has an equally-lethal handcrafted overworld map mode... troll chow again ALREADY?!

  19. Michael Brewer-avatar

    Michael Brewer

I've always wanted to get into Nethack. I'm a fan of Dwarf Fortress and managed to work through the ASCII interface there, but didn't want to invest the time for something like that again for Nethack. Pathos made it quite easy to play. There is a bit of user experience that can be improved, but overall it is easy to use. Some improvements to be made: * The side swipe/touch to open the system menu (save, quit, etc) is nearly impossible to open * Workbench: - craft display don't tell you how much resources any particular item will cost nor how much entropy it will produce - scrap doesn't tell you what materials or nor how much entropy for any given item * Help menu: - This is super helpful for learning about creatures as you go through the game. However getting used to the way things are listed and described is very confusing at first. Often I find myself not wanting to use something because it's description in help is scary and isn't clear if I would be the target or something I point it at or what. - There needs to be some whitespace between groups to help readability * No option (that I saw) to prevent resurrecting. Sometimes I want to play a game on permadeath mode, that's a decision that needs to be made at the beginning of the game, not when you have died.

Bravo. I love Nethack, however, as great as the port of it may be, it's way too tedious and clunky without a keyboard. This simplifies everything for a lovely and clean experience. Additional little options to tweak the game to my comfort just make this absolutely perfect for anyone experienced or new to roguelike. Geoduck, sound effects, dungeon synth, easy to use input and menus. Do yourself a favor and download this!

  21. Caine 1-avatar

    Caine 1

All in all brilliant game :) Needs more custom character options such as being able to choose a monster as a race and or as a companion more weapon types also you should be able to play as the classes of people you kill in a new game e.g. Embalmer, Watch capitan, orc chief and also add revenant class u get to play as your own fallen heroes with the abilities that you would encounter them with. In the campaign the thurther you go the more it lags maybe partition of the map into sectors

well done on an excellent Nethack port to android. Nethack is such complicated dungeon game, evolving since well Linux. Truely a thinking persons game, multi-decade, millions of hours of contribution and this android port is excellent. Such elegant code, intelligence of design and tablet play "Thank You" for timeless classic. One issue have to close inventory and floor item list, or character LAGS badly when moving.

Complex and richly detailed, so far very enjoyable Edit: I have only grown to love this game even more since first downloading! Very difficult but I keep going back to play after inevitable death. No pay to play, advertisement laden, dime a dozen rpg here, just an honestly enjoyable game

Very nice implementation. My complaint is with game balance. Far too many items and situations cause attributes (STR, DEX, et.) to be reduced. Many times I don't even know what happened to reduce them. I suppose that after 200 hours of gameplay all might become clear, but after 10 hours I'm still in the dark. BTW Pathos seems far more complex than Nethack. Update: I'm impressed that the dev responded so quickly and helpfully. Kudos.

Was quick to judge and found that clicking deep into the dungeon leads to unpredictable movement. However me being eating by a monkey was the fault of the game gods. Two squares down one square diagonal left, three moves became 8, I moved back an forth, enough for him to wake up and eat my face. 5 star game. Keep updating plz. This can only get better.

One of the best nethack clones, nay, best dungeon crawlers I have ever had the good pleasure of playing. Criminally under represented. I have spent months playing this gem and every time I pick it up again after a big update I am pleased to see nothing but improvement. Callan is very active on the subreddit, giving in depth info on game mechanics, updates and even helping out new players with tips. I can't help but wonder why this game doesn't get more attention. Best nethack clone on playstore!

I never review games intill today, this game has killed me in so many random ways but I keep coming back for more. It's the exact experience I was looking for since I never had friends that wanted to play d and d. This game has filled the void for me and I just wish I could give the developer a virtual hug. I show everyone I can this game though hoping that little bit will show my appreciation for his hard work and dedication.

I've played this game on and off since about 2015. The changes it has undergone in this time are honestly pretty impressive. This game can be incredibly frustrating at times but it adds to the replay-ability of the game. This game probably came first but the item randomization is akin to Toejam and Earl or Pixel Dungeon. If you enjoy RPG's, this is definitely up your alley

I love this game. A super simple, often difficult, dungeon crawler with many different classes and races for those fans of the genre. There's even a very useful built-in index to reference anytime you have a question (which I had a bunch of, so it was appreciated). To put in perspective my enjoyable experience with this game: my phone toasted itself yesterday and I had to get a new one..after losing a character I put a good 15 hours into here I am again looking forward to start over. Fantastic.

Been playing this for about a month now. I absolutely love it. I'm into rougelikes anyway but can't believe I didn't come across this before. I play it every night while listening to the Paranomal Radio app. Superbly designed, I've created many different characters. The furthest I've got so far is only level 16 though, with my Barbarian Dwarf (Gromm) on his trusted Horse (Caste).

Amazing work, so glad someone finally decided to make a UI mix of NetHack. The quality of life it adds to mobile improves the playability GREATLY. Recent edit: amazing job with keeping the development momentum up. The tiles and featyres are feeling more complete every update. Thank you for your work. Now I've just got my fingers crossed for a rework of DC:SS. Though maybe instead of sitting on my hands I ought to get typing.

A fun, free roguelike with no ads. Very challenging, the game likes to punish you. Not the type of game for everyone but it's one of my favorite roguelikes on android. It's NetHack with some twists. I like how it has a help section with comprehensive info on most things at your fingertips, easy to get into but very difficult to master.

I'm so lost. There's no tutorial or anything, I don't even know what I'm supposed to be doing. Also none of the buttons on the screen work after starting an adventure. 0% responsive to touch. Maybe it's just my device, but I still have no clue what the goal is. Had to uninstall cause I couldn't do anything once I started. I can't give this an accurate rating cause I don't even know how the game works in the first place.

i love it! a remake of nethack with skills, spells, all the item i remember on a little lower difficulty. can have a party of 6 and pets so you wont die alone. If char char dies you can sack your score and keep rolling or start again with the same person sans anything you found or gained. Master mode has me laughing hours straight as i attain godhood from step 1. Meeds a tutorial on how to use master mode a minor fix. You can die happy again and again playing this one ppl

This is the game ive searched the last 18-24 months for on Playstore. It has a variety of classes to choose from, less than 100 mb, vast amounts of info on each of the classes strengths, weaknesses, and weapons. Also, if u want, one can make their own custom hero from the getgo, without having to complete or advance to a certain unattainable level. Plus, its pixel style graphics, which reminds me of the old school rpg/dungeon crawlers. Im very happy i finally decided to download this game.

I love the game but have one complaint. Offline players who just want to survive and enjoy the game are severely handicapped by the crafting entropy mechanics. Me and my kids get WiFi approx 1x a month and have zero interest in cheating scores/ranking. Could you please change it for offline players? Perhaps make it so anything done offline cannot be uploaded later? Late game is a waste of time/no fun, it turns in to load hauling and running back 15-20 levels just to craft bolts. (Update) trying master mode tonight, ty for reply

  45. Kristian Knoblauch-avatar

    Kristian Knoblauch

Beautiful game. Been a fan of roguelikes for a while now. While this retains the massive scope of nethack it has the streamlined feeling of dcss and the user interface once you figure it out makes a lot of sense. I know that this is a niche genre and probably a devs pet project so I really hope that development is able to continue as this game has brought me a lot of joy.

    The Red Raven

I was instantly hooked on this game and spent many hours playing it. There is one mechanic that is game breaking for me however and that is the rabies. I will have an epic run but as soon as I run into a rabid monster its game over. I switched to 3 stars due to dev responsiveness. I'll try this game again after the next public release and see if it plays better. Thank you for the response.

  47. Jonathan Amsbary-avatar

This a really challenging game that may well ruin you for other rp explore the dungeon games. This game is hard, hard hard hard. If you complete the main task, kill the boss and get out alive, you are to be congratualed. The thing is, once a way to beat the game is discovered, an update pops up that kills it. You are quite literally fighting the programmers. Learn how everthing works. I would like it if they had levels, because this game plays at insane.

  48. Weidl-avatar

Amazing game and a surprisingly good UI to get into this kind of a game. I personally never played one before. I encourage everyone to try to get into it because you might feel like uninstalling after the first tries I just managed to beat it and it was very satisfying. You should add a basic tutorial to make it more appealing to the mobile community. Also it would be great to have different criteria for the hall of fame. ppl exploit gold/assets for #1. Also only 0 death+escaped should count.

  49. Kevin Simpson-avatar

The lag monster is real. For what should be a very simple game, this game lags just moving your character. If that was the only issue that might be okay. But then the screen randomly zooms you in or out. I downloaded this game because I wanted a dose of nostalgia and instead found a large dose of frustration. I give it 2 stars because, outside of the frustrating issues described above, it delivers exactly what it promises.

  51. Xiu James-avatar

Absolutely legendary. It is hard and you will probably die thirty to fifty times before you figure out most of the tricks. Two tiny complaints I have are 1.There are artifacts that are significantly worse than the other ones(IMO The hero and the pandora's box), it is so frustrated to obtain them on a good run. 2. Sometime when I misclick on somewhere I didn't plan to go, I can't stop my character from moving by clicking somewhere else.

  52. Pete Bright-avatar

This is the kind of game that can make a weekend disappear; you have been warned. Loads of replay potential between multiple race/class combinations and random maps. Yes, its hard; you start a new game trying to get farther before you die, not really expecting to win. If you're looking for a rougelike game try it.

  53. Alex G.-avatar

I love this app so much since it really brings out the randomness of nethack. I am giving it four stars only because of the new update that made crafting stuff much harder and less convenient :( However if there could be an option to toggle hardcore crafting and regular crafting that would be very nice! I would give five stars for that for sure!

I've been wanting to try Nethack, and this rendition(?) is sleeked up enough for beginners like me. The UI is simplified just enough to be intuitive without holding the player's hand. For fans of games like Pixel Dungeon such as I; the procedural level generation is amazing and the freedom allowed to the player is unparalleled. All in all, I'm thoroughly enjoying the game (even if the RNG decides I need to fight a room of roaches from the get-go lol). love the game and may raise to 5 star later.

Very good game but mild issue: i re downloaded the game and now it wont work at all. Like, click game, half second of black screen, kicked back to phone home screen. Pls help, its a fun game while still remaining small and im a tad concerned. I will let you know if i fix it myself just in case. Edit: it would seem i am the only person with my device model to have the game, so probably that has something to do with it. Its fine, i can be patient and wait. Still a good game. Edit numero 2:fixed it

It is a great game. There are some issues I have with the game. The main stat of the wizard should be intelligence, not wisdom. I have noticed that the wis ability is the mana for wizards. Wisdom should be for clerics. Another issue is that there are some places you cannot go into after searching. Those rooms should have a hidden door also. There were times when I wanted to go into a room, but there was no place to go into the room. As for fame, I think we should not have to lose any of it.

Really cool game it would be even cooler to have more classes But i think this game might either need to change its age restriction or reccomendation to 18 cuz I've seen demons and monsters with their hodonkabonkers out

  58. DrWilyeCoyote-avatar

The game bills iself as the ultimate rpg, and while having 0 microtransactions is a great start I almost feel like many things aren't described well enough. Also it felt like even playing with race/class matching bonuses I still would consistently get beaten early. Was dhack not meant for solo play? Edit: the dev got back to me the same day, and not with some by the book answer either. Will retry.

Awesome, the interface is very intuitive and it brings all of the details and possibilities of a game like this right to the forefront. So far, no ads, complete recreation and improved Nethack roguelike game. Simple taps on your phone to do actions, easy enough to learn if you have a passion for real dungeon crawlers or DnD/Pathfinder. Only downside is at the time of posting this there isn't a real tutorial. But this game is trial and error.

I've played it off and on for a while and It is certainly a great time sink. But, they must have really changed some variables in the last version cause I'm lucky to last 20 turns before dying in overland. Getting one shot by trolls, dying so easily that early on is very frustrating.

I definitely disagree with sunglasses about it being super simple. This is a faithful port of the most complex and nuanced roguelike and there are a ton of things to figure out. Of course that's what you want from a roguelike because every adventure should be unique.

Great game overall, I love it. But, I think you would call it the story mode, is horrid. You just get bombarded with enemies that makes the game seem very grindy. Also it would be nice if there were quests, a story, dialogue, ect in that mode

The "graphics" totally reek and it's a little more difficult than it needs to be. When selecting an avatar for a character you are creating, there are a lot of repeated options. Not a lot of thought was put into this game. Go for something better!

I love this game! Played Rogue a lot when I was a kid and this is exactly the kind of game I've been searching for - Rogue but with more features. The only thing I would ask for is a local high score table - there's no way I'm going to get on the global one

  72. Tyler Grikas-avatar

    Tyler Grikas

Awesome roguelike, exactly what I was looking for. Just the right amount of depth IMO. Mobile interface is well designed. The default graphics are a bit weird to me, but I love the "classic" tileset. Highly recommended!

Roguish charm! A great little game, true rogue gameplay, not bloated with ads or the like. Has good depth

  74. Corey Woodworth-avatar

    Corey Woodworth

Nethack's UI is archaic and opaque even when you have a full mouse and keyboard setup. That makes it all the more impressive that this port makes it so intuitive with just a touch screen. I do wish the graphics could be upgraded like Vulture's Eye though!

  75. Don Meline-avatar

    Don Meline

This game is really fun, but dang! I got to dungeon level 36 and my Barbarian gets steamrolled by everything! I might have to try something easier. The game looks and plays very well. Thanks for making this, it was a lot of fun.

Best NetHack variant for Android out there. I would LOVE to have the opportunity to play vanilla NetHack with this engine though, as I prefer it's balance over any variant. Maybe it'll be possible some day. Still a really good game and lots of thanks for making it!

This is the rpg I have always been looking for. By the looks, extra simplistic, but so much depth when it comes to playing. A great experience over and over again and never the same!

I really appreciate the built-in info, plays about as well a proper roguelike can on mobile and I even enjoy the PC version. About the only problem is the pullout menu is a bit finicky about opening in portrait mode but seems fine in landscape.

The possibilities and endless abilities are massive. But I never got past death anyways. The tutorial is very interesting, but you'll never use that knowledge anyways. I wanted to become a cannibalistic orc, but I died to a bunny.

The game style is the same style as pixel dungeon and I really didn't like the way it played, but it has potential and I think you should keep working on it. I may come back to it in a few years to see how it is doing. (Bonus star for active devs)

  83. Evelina-avatar

It was a bit buggy on the beginning, but the Dev has really polished it up! Someone give the Dev a gold star or something!

  84. Chimaobi Ahamba-avatar

I'm not entirely sure why, but the game is free. If you like roguelikes you can easily sink hundreds of hours into this. Dev and all involved in porting are legends.

It's a great game. Unfortunately, it also lags a lot. For an offline game with such simple graphics this is difficult to comprehend. Still, it's worth a download if you can overlook the occasional hitching.

Grate game. I love nethack and this delivers. Not only do you get to play a grate roughlike, but you also can make your own map. I made mine based on ultima 4 and 5 xD love the app/game I'm suprised this app dosen't cost money to play. -thx you creators and testers!

This Nethack clone is probably the best adapted for a touch screen experience out of all the Nethack ports and clones I've tried so far. The fact that you can change your characters sprite needs to be communicated a bit more clearly though

  92. John-avatar

Fantastic game. From quick dungeon runs while you're waiting for a table at a restaurant to epic weekend quests, this game covers it. Developer interacts with the users and maintains the app on an ongoing basis. Go grab it for your desktop as well.

Please make crafting easier and add dragonborn and palidin as a race and class. Sorry if i was unclear you should make user interface better that the only reason i gave 4 stars but overal good game reminds me of the good days of d and d

  118. Haldurson-avatar

I've been playing roguelike games since my Commodore VIC-20, starting with Sword of Fargoal. I then discovered Rogue while admining a Unix system in college, and then found Moria, Angband, ADOM, Hack, Nethack, and ultimately Pathos. Callan has done an amazing job with Pathos. He is completely engaged with the player community and maintains constant updates across all platforms. I play Pathos on my Google Pixel, iPad, and MacBook Pro (in Boot Camp running Windows 10). If you love this genre of games, Pathos is a must play.
