IMPORTANT:
The launcher icon does nothing useful! Don't open it if you read this! This app works through the use of a custom Quick Tile. Add the tile by opening the notification shade all the way, tapping the pencil or "EDIT," and dragging "Hide Notch" to the active area. Check the "Promo" video for a visual guide, or follow this link: https://youtu.be/HhH5wK1NokY

ALSO IMPORTANT:
Android prevents screen overlays from showing on the lockscreen, so this app will not and cannot work when the device is locked!

ALSO ALSO IMPORTANT:

ZENFONE 5 USERS:
After installing, if the tile doesn't show up in your quick settings menu, reboot. This is a ZenUI bug!

Maybe you have a phone with a notch, maybe you don't. If you do, you might also be annoyed by having this black blob in the middle of a light-colored status bar most of the time.

If this description fits you, you probably want this app. Nacho Notch colors the status bar black while the device is in the portrait orientation, making it better fit with the notch (thereby "hiding" it).

Even if you don't have a notch, but still want a black status bar, you can use the app too. It dynamically finds the height of your statusbar, so you won't be dealing with too little or too much height, or finnicky manual sizing.

Wish it would activate when I restart/turn on phone, as I have to toggle each time but I don't restart My phone often. Also wish there was a setting to actually move the corners up and down so they connect to the bottom bar if I adjust bottom bar height instead of just changing the shape. Overall it's cool though and it's nice that it's free and free of ads!

nacho notch — notch hider App doesn't work on my LG V40 on Android 9.0. I see it works for 1 second and then stops... I have already enabled permissions to draw over apps and I also tried rebooting the phone, it just doesn't seem to work on my phone but I see it works for other people.

nacho notch — notch hider apk Works great on my Nokia 5.3, not just for the notch, but also for navigation bar. Also rounded corners make the screen much more elegant.

Would really help if I could choose the navbar color to help avoid burn in. Just a simple color picker to let me decide how light or dark a gray I want would be super helpful. Also could really use a second QS tile to let me turn the nav bar tint and status bar tint off separately. I would pay extra for this option, and would pay a lot more if I could set decide what apps use the navbar tint and which don't.

Works well! Please add a landscape mode for black out navigation buttons! This would be everythign for me to balance out the S21 and its notch! Also, allow app by app configuration

I don't even black out the notch and set the statusbar height to 0. And gives me my round corners on my pixel 3 xl that got lost with the dev options device cutout hide enabled.

Whether they're called notches, camera cutouts or holes, I don't want to see them. When I got my Pixel 5, it seems Google removed the developer option to hide the cutout but fortunately, this nifty utility does the trick.

My phone looks a lot better now. It doesn't have that ugly notch showing due to the the Status bar showing up white. Does just what it advertised and very easy to use.

Really like this app on the Pixel 3 XL. I can only gove it 4 stars though, because when it's active, it prevents the back and home buttons on the bottom of the screen from changing color based on the background. That means on some apps, you have white buttons on a white background, which are nearly impossible to see. Fix that, and it's an easy 5 stars!

The app works fine most of the time, but there are some weird issues. The buttons on the bottom of the screen turn the same color as the bottom navigation bar, making them very difficult to see, which is annoying but not a deal breaker. The bigger issues are with the top bar, the entire reason for this app's existence. The function will randomly stop working maybe once or twice a day, either going back to the stock notch appearance or completely blacking out everything, including notifications.

Very nice but I'd like to see a little more development. A couple suggestions. This seems to lock navigation buttons to white which is fine with dark backgrounds or if you turn on the blackout nav bar option. Would like to see nav buttons go black on white backgrounds as they do when the app is not in use. Also, an option the hide the status bar icon would be nice. This can be done in system notification settings so it's not as important but would still be nice.

Love this app, but lately on Android 10 on my Pixel 3 XL the app has stopped blocking out my notch sometimes. I toggle it off and on again, but the only solution that works is restarting my phone entirely. It'll work for maybe another day or so before it quits working again. EDIT: So this update still hasn't fixed the issue. Woke up this morning with my notch no longer hidden. Restarting the phone fixed the issue, but I can't say for how long. I restarted the day you responded to my review.

Works well on Pixel 3 XL for the top notification area. I understand everything has to be painted white, including the bottom buttons, for this to work. Can the top and bottom use something like 80% transparency? As an additional option. That way we could still see the bottom nav without making the background black. And 80% is probably bright enough to view the top area. Just a thought. Nice work on the app.

Works very well, and is smart about disappearing in landscape. Only issue is that it doesn't work with light navigation bars. On apps with a light navigation bar the nav buttons don't turn dark as they should, making them hard to see. The app does allow you to force a dark nav bar at all times, but I would prefer not to have to resort to that. If this gets fixed, it's an easy 5 stars

I love the functionality of this app compared to the developer option to hide the notch on the Google Pixel 3 XL. Keeping the notification icons where they are is exactly how this feature should work. My only quibble is the fact it doesn't work on the lock screen. I can live with that, but is that being worked on as an added feature?

More or less works. Android's insistence on popping a notification when the app is running is annoying but not the app's fault. Bigger issues are the frequent bugs, including the black bar showing up over landscape videos at times (blocking part of the video), the bar drawing over notifications at times (covering up the entire notch portion of the screen), the bar being offset down vertically at times (showing part of the notch but covering part of the screen), and many many more.

9/13 update - Upgraded to Android 10 and this app is now useless. Developer options now have the features baked in, so, uninstalled. Old 3 star review: Usually it's great. But oftentimes I have to toggle it off and then back on. Not sure if this is an android issue or the app. Would be nice if it were more of a set it and forget it thing. But it's not. Oh, and I read the "terms".

Been using it the past year to hide the hideous pixel 3 xl notch. Makes things look so much cleaner. However after updating to Android 10 (Q?) it seems a little finicky. Seems to stop working randomly and switching it on and off doesn't help. It seemsnto fix itself randomly too. Not sure what triggers either. Hopefully an update will solve the issue.

In a future update. Can you make a option so it won't activate when the phone is in landscape mode. Other wise great (Edit: Version 20 does work properly on the YouTube app, however, I would like to be able to toggle it off automatically when I manually rotate my phone (I use a Pixel 3). I will go back to using it permanently on my phone.

This app is awesome for hiding the notch on the pixel 3 XL but maintaining screen real estate! Google should really implement this themselves. Be sure to turn on rounded corners on settings though! There is a slight bug where the nav bar stays light grey when it normally would fade to dark (on a light colored app) but apparently this and the persistent notification cannot be fixed due to limitations of the method used. Even still, this app is great for notched phones.

  22. Ben Wilsker-avatar

    Ben Wilsker

This app is nearly there. In apps with a white navigation bar, it doesn't allow the icons to transition to their alternate grey color, so it's pretty much impossible to see them in the white on white. Also, there is a flicker with the rounded corners for the top section every once in a while which is just distracting. Dev seems to really want people to read the terms ... though it's not entirely clear why the terms would affect buggy behavior.

Gets rid of the giant notch nicely! I have used it since I got my Pixel 3xl and it works great. I have about 150 apps on my phone and all of the apps work perfectly with it. The only two I turn it off for are 2 that I side loaded from the internet, not through the store. But it is very easy to turn off with one touch and then turn it back on when I am done. Love the ease of use!

Would be nice to have the white nav bar issue work as normal, but totally understand the issue as developer. I hope Google will allow this similar functionality as this app in the future. Thank you Zach for not having Ads!

Great at hiding the top notch of the Pixel 3 XL. Gave it 4 stars though since it blacks out the bottom chin, making the screen even smaller. If they allowed you to affect the top or bottom of the phone separately this would be perfect. EDIT: reinstalled and figured out that I had the bottom rounded corners enabled. Disabling that allowed me to only have the top notch covered. YES!!!!! Thank you for an amazing app! Bumped up to 5 stars!

Android 10. Not so great. Randomly disappears thought the day. About 50% of the time restarting app works for a short while. If not, it takes a phone restart to get it back. Still this way after latest update to app. Android 9 review. For my Pixel 3 XL it has been wonderful. I started using it 2 days after the phone launch in October '18 and has been running flawlessly ever since. No errors or glitches.

while this app is great for hiding the hole punch for the s10 series of phones, there is a slight issue, for when ever switched to 720p, 1080p, and 4k the settings reveal the hole punch or covering to much of the screen requiring to readjust the settings, for this I'd propose to change the setting fron pixels to a percentage of the overall screen.

Thanks for developing this app man, it's awesome, for me I think it's the way Google should have done this in the first place, sadly there's a lot of people here that want to customize their device but don't even know how to read some simple instructions, even for the persistent notification that you can easily get disabled.

This app hides the notch well. Better than it did a couple of versions back. It used to crash a lot but works great now so far. One thing I would like to see is the ability to hide or unhide the notch on a per app basis. Maybe some customization of the colors and patterns of the notch.

I'm running a Pixel 3 XL and when this is turned on the buttons in the navigation bar at the bottom stay white when they should turn black when I'm in an app. If that could be fixed then this would get 5 stars.

Great app to cover up the notch on my pixel 3xl. Edit: more fixes needed. (1) when watching videos on YouTube, when you zoom in, the cut out doesn't work. (2) in some apps, the rounded edges doesn't work when you toggle it. For example, it doesn't work on WGT Golf app.

Unfortunately version 26 does not fix Nacho in Android 10 for me. After installing 10, I just turned off Nacho and back on, that seemed to fix it. Nacho kept seeming to be disabled and I could toggle it, but after a few toggles, now it just doesn't work no matter what I do. I have cleared cache/storage, uninstalled/reinstalled and it just doesn't work. When my wife first updated to A10, the Nacho didn't work, but toggling it once corrected hers and it's been fine.

So far so good. I just downloaded to my Pixel 3XL and it works even better than expected. Along with covering up the notch, it also blackens out the navigation bar at the bottom and rounds the corners of you prefer that look. And, it's very easy to change the settings.

*Update* Originally rated 1 star for poor instructions for S10 phones. Figured how to fix it on my own, see below ORIGINAL Instructions Youtube videos advise to click "Edit" in the the notification bar to add as a tile. This does not work for S10+ Galaxy S10 steps: 1. Install Nacho Notch 2. From Home Screen swipe down on the notification bar twice fast. 3. Reveals: Search - Gear - Ellipses icons (3 dots) 4. Select Ellipses and click "Button Order" 5. Drag Nacho Nacho Icon down to grid.

A lifesaver after OnePlus removed their hide notch setting, then brought it back, but moved all notification icons off the top bar and onto the screen cluttering the wallpaper and making screen size smaller. Unlike other notch hiding apps I've tried, it's a tiny app, free, no ads or annoying themes, bar is true AMOLED black, works in ALL apps, default settings are perfect but easy to change, has rounded corners, I never have to open app, easy to reactivate from quick settings after phone restart

Makes the notch on the Pixel 3 how it should be from Google, invisible yet functional. Keeps the time and notifications hidden up in the notch area without the funky huge notch in the rest of screen. I'd pay for this app, it's that good! Google should have this in the settings menu.

This works very well with the 3xl. A few minor bugs I've noticed since having it. Blacking out the notch at the top is great. However, it does affect the navbar at the bottom too. If the navbar is already a black gradient then it's fine, but if it's a white gradient then the home button and back button are both white on white when the notch is hidden. If the navbar were totally unaffected then this app would be perfect.

Maintains notch usability while making it look great. The Android default disables the notch altogether, which isn't a real solution. This app prevents the weird coloration while still allowing the extra space to be used for notifications, which is exactly what I wanted.

This app is incredibly useful, and I'm quite glad it exists, especially without ads. Not to mention how easy it is to turn it on and off. It would be perfect if it didn't white out the nav buttons when there's a white nav bar.

Was liking the app, but it causes a fairly glaring UI issue, for which the dev said "read the terms". I did read them, it doesn't mention the issue. Was at 4 stars, subtracted one for that response and then one more because the app appears to have been abandoned. Subtracted another after 6 months of not fixing the issue.

Essential on the Pixel 3 XL. Hoping to be notified as soon as AppBrain triggers advertising so I have the option to pay instead. Like FI Switch (for Project FI), the app is a no brainer. Did not think the QS tile setting step in Pie was obvious for everyone looking at the tutorial.

Perfect for Google Pixel 3 XL. The notch on the Pixel is flat out horrid in my opinion, but being able to hide it so efficiently is great for someone like me who cares about that sort of thing. Hearing about this app is actually what made me pull the trigger and purchase the Pixel 3 XL.

Perfect for my pixel 3 xl, I didn't want to do the developer options to hide the notch because you lose the time/battery/notifications up there. This is exactly what I wanted, and the rounded corners option is a nice touch making it look super natural.

Mandatory on pixel 3xl! Messes with navigation button color though. I really like it hiding the notch and I have turned off the bottom bar but it doesn't let the home button turn gray when on a white background. I toggle it off and the color changes normally. If you can make this adjustment, this app would be awesome! Thank you!

Told myself I would NEVER use the Pixel 3 XL (or any other hideously notched device) but after succumbing to a Black Friday $200 discount, I pulled the trigger. Nacho Notch was the first real app I installed on my device (behind Project Fi to enable transfer of my phone number & service), but it's allowed me to not have to get used to the disgustingly over-sized notch, while still allowing me to take full advantage of the notification space at the top of the device. Google's developer options solution was hardly a solution at all, by pushing all the important info down, causing you to lose a significant amount of screen real estate. I don't buy an XL because I want to squish things down and lose that precious extra pixel space. So far, so good. HIGHLY recommend this app to all Pixel 3 XL owners and anyone else dealing with notchaphobia. No more! Thanks, Mr. Zachary Wander, sir you are a true hero.

Loved it until my Pixel 3XL updated. Then the black border covered too much of the bottom of the screen. Covers the Google Assistant widget. (Developer says I can modify the bar height by holding down on the QS tile, but what the heck is a QS tile?)

Works really well on the Moto G7, hiding the hideous teardrop. Rounded corners match up well after some tweaks in the available nacho settings.

Simple but great app to hide the notch. Great for hiding the notch, while retaining the icons. Using on a Pixel 3 XL.

This app works well. It hides the notch on the picked 3 with the status bar still vissible. It has lots of customization.

Fantastic app. One thing I'd like to see is the persistent notification be smaller once I select the minimize option in Android.

Didn't work. Installed, watched tutorial, went to settings menu, wasn't there, so couldn't even implement. Running Android 10 on OnePlus6

Thank God. Hopefully Google listens to people. But this will do until they release an update. It's everything I wanted to fix the pixel 3 notch!

It does the job, however the notch shows back up frequently. To fix I disable and re-enable. Happens several time a day.

Pixel 3 XL. Playing around with my new phone. I got rid of the icon in the notification bar. Happy now! My phone looks much better now. I wonder why Google didn't give me this option?

With minimal, occasional lapses (which are remedied by turning it on and off), this app does as advertised and is seemless.

Great for hiding the notch on the Pixel 3 XL. One feature I would like to see if possible is to add a whitelist of apps/launchers where the notch and nav bar are not blacked out by this app.

Just in case anyone is wondering, no this doesn't seem to work on Note10. Hopefully an update will make it work on Note10.

Dude! Well done. I can't believe Google didn't have this built in. So I get my time and battery all the way up, but no nasty notch.

suggestion: add an option to automatically disable whenever the phone is in immersive mode currently immersive apps just have the black bar at the top which covers up a bit of content

Great app works as intended. Maybe try and make directions easier to find and call them instructions and not terms.

I don't like how the notch has it's own notification symbol. Edit: hey it works! Now it's awesome. Thank you!

It doesn't override the navigation bar color. Please update app. Otherwise it is a nice app. Android 10. LG V60.
