El Libro de los Jubileos es una de las más importantes obras pseudoepigráficas del Antiguo Testamento, tanto por su extensión relativa como por su coherente contenido.

El rasgo, muy propio de esta obra, de presentarse como una revelación efectuada por encargo divino y en primera persona por un ángel «de la faz», o «divina presencia»- a Moisés en el monte Sinaí. Aquél le hace depositario de las tablas de la Ley y, a la vez, de profecías completas sobre las gracias y desgracias que alcanzarían a Israel.

El Libro de los Jubileos ha recibido también otras denominaciones, fácilmente explicables por su contenido, como la de «Pequeño Génesis» «Apocalipsis de Moisés», «Testamento de Moisés», «Libro de las Hijas de Adán» y «Vida de Adán» , a las que hay que añadir, por supuesto, la de la versión etiópica, Mashafa Kufale, «Libro de la distribución (de los días de la ley... , etc.)>>, que podría muy bien ser la original.

Su autor es anónimo como en todo este tipo de obras.
Entre los manuscritos del Mar Muerto se han encontrado catorce fragmentos hebreos de varias copias de Jub. Jub refleja el ideario básico de la comunidad Esenia en el puesto supremo y validez eterna de la ley, en el afán por mantener a Israel 
apartado de la impureza e idolatría gentiles e incluso en la adopción del calendario solar. Hay que reconocer, sin embargo, que otras ideas básicas de la comunidad de Qumrán no aparecen en Jub, quizá debido a su propósito de insistir sólo en los dos 
primeros libros del Pentateuco.

En resumen, pues, el autor de Jub es probablemente un sacerdote, anónimo, con un ideario básicamente esenio, pero que no forma parte estrictamente de esa comunidad, por ser un «protoesenio» o un miembro independiente de ella.
