Bid’ah secara bahasa berarti membuat sesuatu tanpa ada contoh sebelumnya.(Dalam Al Mu’jam Al Wasith, 1/91, Majma’ Al Lugoh Al ‘Arobiyah-Asy Syamilah)

Hal ini sebagaimana dapat dilihat dalam firman Allah,

بَدِيعُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ

“Allah Pencipta langit dan bumi.” (QS. Al Baqarah [2] : 117, Al An’am [6] : 101), maksudnya adalah mencipta (membuat) yang mana tidak ada contoh pada sebelumnya.

Juga firman-Nya,

قُلْ مَا كُنْتُ بِدْعًا مِنَ الرُّسُلِ

“Katakanlah: ‘Aku bukanlah yang menyampaikan hal yang baru di antara rasul-rasul’.” (QS. Al Ahqaf [46] : 9) , maksudnya aku bukanlah Rasul pertama yang diutus ke dunia ini dan menyampaikan hal Baru (Melainkan Tauhid yang sama seperti Pendahuluku). Lisanul ‘Arob, 8/6 -Asy Syamilah
Definisi Secara Istilah

Definisi bid’ah secara istilah yang paling bagus adalah definisi yang dikemukakan oleh Al Imam Asy Syatibi dalam Al I’tishom. Beliau mengatakan bahwa bid’ah adalah:

عِبَارَةٌ عَنْ طَرِيْقَةٍ فِي الدِّيْنِ مُخْتَرَعَةٍ تُضَاهِي الشَّرْعِيَّةَ يُقْصَدُ بِالسُّلُوْكِ عَلَيْهَا المُبَالَغَةُ فِي التَّعَبُدِ للهِ سُبْحَانَهُ

Suatu istilah untuk suatu jalan dalam agama yang dibuat-buat (tanpa ada dalil, pen) yang menyerupai syari’at (ajaran Islam), yang dimaksudkan ketika menempuhnya adalah untuk berlebih-lebihan dalam beribadah kepada Allah Ta’ala

Khurafat adalah Bid’ah dalam bidang Akidah, yakni kepercayaan atau keyakinan kepada sesuatu perkara yang menyalahi ajaran islam. Misalnya, meyakini kuburan orang saleh dapat memberikan berkah, memuja atau memohon kepada makhluk halus (jin), meyakini sebuah benda, tongkat, keris, batu, dll. memikiki kekuatan Ghaib yang bisa diandalkan, dan sebagainya.
