Horror in the Darkness is a short exploration and puzzle solving adventure game inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, where players explore and investigate, putting together clues and solve puzzles to uncover the secrets of Wentsire Manor. It is a mobile phone adaption of the classic text-based adventure genre, similar to the point-and-click classics. The game combines a bleak environment and an sense of underlying dread with moments of comedy to keep you entertained.

Fresh back from the horrors of World War 2, our protagonist was working as a private investigator. Not hugely successful, but it paid the bills. Mostly. But when the widow of his old friend needed his help nothing could have prepared him for the bizarre and uncanny events that were about to unfold.

If you enjoyed this part, the adventure continues in the sequel, Horror at Innsport. Available now on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nz.co.karmicshift.horror2a

I am so stupid but the hints helped me when I was stuck, the story was definitely interesting and I loved reading each bit and thinking which way I'll go to first. I took it nice and slow looking at things to get further details and descriptions before doing anything else. Some sentences were beautifully formed with the choice of words, it brought out quite a nice imagination of the setting and anything physical in the area. Very nice!

OML I LOVE THIS GAME. I've played a bunch of "novel" games, and this is definetely the best. Great story line. Would definetely reccomend and can't wait to play the sequel!

Very well done! Gameplay relies heavily on you examining everything, even after you pick it up, and paying close attention to details. My only criticism is a lack of breadcrumbs around the toybox. The only reason I figured that out is I started just using all options with everything. While that is technically a staple of old school text adventures, it can mean that maybe you aren't communicating as well with your players as you'd prefer. Overall, fantastic game! Can't wait to play the sequel!

It is a really good game. The descriptions and text is of really good quality. The story is a bit lacking, I thought it would be this exciting ending, but it turned out really generic. However, there are sequels that both have a larger world and better story writing. This game may be lacking, but the series of games are excellent and this gets you right into them. Not only that, but the quality really stands out compared to most mobile games that are pure ad filler, click air, buggy games.

This game is just so interesting! The mechanics can be annoying sometimes but it doesn't take away from the overall game! I love iiiit!!

  6. Lucretia Bell-avatar

    Lucretia Bell

A fun semi-traditional IF game (this isn't Zork, but it has plenty of "use the x with the y.") It's easy—I only had to resort to a hint for one puzzle, and I'm usually a hint user. Many room descriptions don't mention every exit, but they are almost always visible on the map, so it's not a huge problem. Overall very satisfying and atmospheric. It's definitely worth the hour or so it takes to play.

  7. Helen Brandt-avatar

Subtle and creative. The controls take a little while to pin down, but each control will give appropriate feedback on whether or not the action is pointless or needs more work. The atmosphere was well written for a horror mystery. I'm glad more has been written in the series, and that the next installment is longer than this one.

I really enjoyed the story! I kept expecting a little more horror to happen, like a great beast to attack me! I think the suspense could be added with some timed text! I really enjoyed the world exploration, the using items to interact with the world (like collecting, and combining objects) and using items to passively interact with the environmental conditions (boots!) All together, solid! :)

This is short easy text based mystery game. The puzzles won't be hard for anyone with some wit. The music is nice. It's a good game for 1st time mystery game players. I would've given 3/5 except for a couple things; not enough scares, strict path to beat game, and a horrible glitch. This glitch makes it so items don't disappear in my inventory when I needed them, and its happened to me consistently so I never beat the game. I sent email to devs for 4 help but no answer. Will try deluxe edition.

No graphics to speak of in this text based game. It was a touch confusing for me until I started to use the map. The hints help too. Challenging but not too hard to complete.
