Kanji Senpai will help you learn Japanese vocabulary and kanji.
By using a spaced repetition system (SRS) you can memorize the different aspects of each vocabulary: meaning, pronunciation, reading, listening, writing, etc.

Included it's the N5 level of the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) vocabulary list and you can download (for free!) all the levels (though N1).

Ah! This app assumes you've already mastered hiragana and katakana.

FEATURES
• Study several vocabulary aspects: reading, listening, writing, meaning and handwrite
• Answers are not so easy so you will really learn that the kanji for "person" is 人 (hito), no 八 (for example)
* In the kanji write aspect, strokes are checked for rightness (there's even a strict mode!)
• Lists can be downloaded and upgraded
• You can a study a session without audio questions (in case you're in a public place with no headphones)
• There are vocabulary translations for English and Spanish
• You can create custom lists
• Example sentences (currently for the N5 and N4 levels)

If you are serious about learning Japanese, you can download premium audio packs for the study lists (don't worry, it's cheap!). These audios are professionally audio recorded from a Japanese native teacher that will help you master the vocabulary.

The Audio pack for a list (inapp purchase) will unlock:
  • Audio for words
  • Audio aspect (you'll be asked for listening questions)
  • Kanji handwritten aspect (you'll have to write kanji and kana)
  • Ads will be disabled
  • Unlimited custom lists

Additionally you can purchase the Sentences pack for:
  • Example sentences for vocabulary
  • Questions with context
  • Listen to sentences with Text to speech

With your support, the application will evolve with new exciting features.

I would love to give this a higher rating. Unfortunately, the in-app purchases are a mess. No description of what you actually purchase (n1, n5, etc. That's all they say). I really don't mind purchasing packs to learn more, as the quality of the app is great, but I need to understand what I purchase, and which step is the next. Now I have a new Kanji to learn, no audio support, and I don't know which pack to get for that Kanji. Please make it easier to know what people are purchasing.

This app is good for learning vocab but there really needs to be an option to limit the number of new words to learn. I have over a hundred due reviews but instead of letting me do reviews, it keeps forcing me to learn many new words each day when I haven't even memorised the previously shown new words. This is very frustrating and I hope it can be fixed.

It's a lovely app, the only one who got me hooked and learning. Even if you don't purchase the audio packs it's a great tool (and they're worth it). The only aspect I'd like it to improve is to make the user able to easily change the ratio of new words and reviews. I know you can reschedule your reviews, but it's not intuitive at all.

In essence good, but it gives no control over your learning speed. Half of what this app arbitrarily considers reviewing, I can't actually do (esp write) the next day. The supposed way to set the percentage of reviewing just doesn't work (crash, infinite loop, or wrong to 10/88/0), both before and after the recent update. But even if it worked, that is not really the flexibility we need. I'd like minimum repetition rate per type and an exponential falloff curve over 3 days for reviewing...

I really really need a way to jump to the word I was reviewing before in the vocabulary list. I only want a quick review , not having to go through the quizzes. Isn't it possible that when I search the word, the app jumps to that specific word in the list rather than show me only that word? Please! (from a paid user)

I would rate it 5 stars but the recent update is trash. It's still a solid app, but a few problems is the long wait time when coming across audio pack words. It's misplaced in my opinion, it shouldn't be placed in the middle of a learning session but instead it should have been moved to the main menu or even upon opening the app. The 30 second wait could deter people from wanting to learn. Also the addition to the kanji writing system. I understand its helpful to learn how to write kanji but some people use it for vocabulary srs learning. There isn't a way to custom tailor it to remove those reviews from the review chart. So now i have over 200 reviews from kanji writing even though the option is disabled in my settings. The only way to clear it, is to enable it and go through the long process of manually drawing kanji. The pacing is also different now as well, immediately after you learn a word another shows up and it never was that quick before the update.

I love this app but I beg the dev to stop asking me to buy the audio pack after every single word. This effectively makes the app unusable. Edit: Wait 30s (still a little annoying that you can't just close out) and the message no longer appears after each subsequent word. Overall still a wonderful tool I have used for quite some time.

Nice app to learn new vocab and kanji, but the handwriting section is off on some words. Random lines and strokes are accepted as correct answers The price for audio is ridiculious. 14 lists at $3.49 comes out to near$50. You're better off spending on other apps that offer a much lower price for way more than audio. Also wish learning and reviewing were in seperate catogories. Once you finish your review, you're forced to learn new vocab without being able to go over old stuff til next day.

This app is amazing for studying Japanese!! It really keeps it varied between reading/writing/listening so you get good practice in all of those and don't get bored doing the same old thing. I really like how you can dismiss a word if you already know it well! I have had no problems with it crashing.

I'm a long time user of this app but I suddenly got a serious problem with how to add new words to my list. I reached out to the devs and they quickly fixed my problem with an update and now everything is back to normal. I love this app and it's an excellent study companion with my S Pen (Samsung Note 8)
