Learn to read and write Japanese with the highest rated kanji app in the store.

All learning features are completely free, so you can jump in no matter what skill level you're currently at. There are no ads, but there is a paid version if you want to donate. It's got extra bonus features like speech output, synching across multiple devices, user defined study lists, etc.

Most other apps simply present you with a wall of information about one kanji after another, and expect you to wade through the whole lot in an extremely tedious and inefficient way.

By contrast, Kanji Tree's revolutionary approach is simple, fun, and super effective. The more you learn, the more you can explore. And the more you explore, the more your previous learning gets reinforced.

• Kanji Recognition Game.

The learning process is broken down into three natural stages. The first is a gentle introduction which trains the pattern matching area in your brain to recognise kanji shapes. By focusing on this activity to begin with, you will amaze yourself by how powerful your own learning abilities really are.

• Word Reading Game.

The next stage takes the kanji you can recognise, and teaches you Japanese words which use them. Most kanji can be pronounced in different ways, depending on which word they're used in. By learning actual words , you naturally learn the kanji pronunciations at the same time. Don't waste your time trying to memorize lists of meaningless gibberish, or obscure pronunciations you will never need.

• Word Writing Game.

The final stage to leaning kanji is being able to write them. This will lock them into your memory in a way that reading alone will never do.

• Go At Your Own Pace

Kanji Tree takes the chore out of kanji study, making it a fun and rewarding experience. You are in control at all times; study new things or revise item you've already seen, whatever suits your mood. Sit down for half an hour in the evening, or take it out for five minutes while you're waiting for a bus. Kanji Tree automatically tracks your progress and builds your personalised ideal study list, you just play the games.

Take time out to explore as much as you like. Tap on any kanji or any of it's parts to bring up the dictionary, and browse freely to satisfy your curiosity and build connections in your brain. Then just press "Back" to seamlessly pick up where you left off.

• Features

A short but informative tutorial is available to walk you through the basic features.

Pronunciations can be displayed in either Roman Alphabet or Hiragana, depending on which you prefer.

Contains all 6355 kanji in the Kentei list, broken down into sub-categories for Jōyō grades, elementary school, high school, people/place names, and advanced.

Contains a 110,000+ word dictionary, which is searchable by meaning, reading, etc. You can also list all words containing a given kanji with a specific reading.

Hints are available in the various games, but you get a better score if you don't use them.

There's a bunch of other stuff too, but don't waste time reading about it; just install the app and find out for yourself!

App ChangeLog

  • Improvements to the dictionary.
  • Removed the links to the pro version in the pop-ups which explain why certain features aren't available in the regular one.

Incredible for a free app. Helps you learn meaning, reading, and writing Kanji. Would be better if it includes explanation of why the character means what it does, like the origins of the characters or what the different parts represent, but I understand that's included in the pro version. Even still, this is awesome and the writing practice is amazing software. The algorithm forces you to practice the ones you get wrong, which really helps strengthen your knowledge. I love this app!

This is a life saver as someone who's learning at uni, especially in the fact that it's free! There aren't any ads either :,) There's a clear walkthrough of how everything works when you open it for the first time, which is quite handy. Everything is split up into sections of N1-N5, Grade 1 etc. Really good app, I recommend giving it a go and if it doesn't match up with your learning style, you're not really going to lose anything. Just uninstall. Thank you, Andrew!

I love this app!! It uses a step-by-step teaching method with a thorough tutorial and a consistent style. It teaches the meaning, readings, and the stroke orders of the kanji, and even has a section for learning to read names in kanji. I would recommend learning hiragana and katakana before using this app, but there is a section to learn those as well with this app.

This is my favourite way to learn kanji! It's the only app I need to learn them. I love that you have the option to learn kanji by incorporating them in words combined with other kanji because it feels weird learning a bunch of different readings for a kanji without really knowing what to use them for. You can also do the kanji alone of course as well as writing.

This is the best app i have ever used. All the apps that i have used up till now always focus on basic and do the same stuff again and again, to learn the real part you either have to pay or watch some ads. But in this app, it is so easy to learn every kanji and there is no ads, can you believe that? NO ADS. it's totally mind-blowing that there is no ads. There is a choice game that helps you to learn in a fun away. It covers almost every part of kanji. I am totally satisfied with this app.

The backup feature still cannot be used. I sent a report a few months back. I just redownloaded the app and now it even crashes when I try to access the feature. Would be such a great app, but if I cannot sync across devices, I have no use for it.

  7. nakarealm-avatar

This app so far is one of the best, if not the best app to learn kanji. There are no locked material, and you could learn based on your preference (joyo kanji/jlpt kanji) and you can also learn writing plus additional vocabulary based on its frequency. Highly recommend everyone to try this app at least once!

This is a great app for learning the japanese language. I particularly enjoy the recognition section where the user is graded/rated in terms of how proficient he/she is in recognizing characters - other apps don't have this. It gives you a numerical benchmark for you to target, improve, and maintain. I mastered my Hiragana and Katakana recognition through this. Highly recommended. Thanks to the developer.

So far very good. Really simple to understand and grasp and pretty fun. Better than similar Kanji learning apps I've tried. My only complaint is I'd prefer it if the kanji and kana were in standardized fonts, not hand written as sometimes I find it hard to recognise what I am looking at.

This app has been really useful for me. I found it when I was trying to learn kanjis for the JLPT. It fits in my pocket far better than a stack of 2000+ flash cards, and includes a lot more information, too. The stroke animations and practice options are really cool, and the Teach Me feature is on point. I love how you can really dig down into a kanji after you miss one while quizzing. The interface is smooth and intuitive. It's even good just for killing time. Great job, and thank you Andrew!
