This is the BETA release of the KALQ keyboard (official).

KALQ is optimized for rapid two thumb typing on touchscreen devices. It works on tablets as well as smartphones with a large display.

The design is based on work by researchers from Max Planck Institute of Informatics, Montana Tech and University of St.Andrews. The design considers multiple human factors affecting the movement of thumbs. A user study showed that users could speed up typing by more than 30% over their regular speed with a default Qwerty layout. Please visit the homepage for more information

The good. This is a great innovation. Personally it helps me a lot to map the whole word in my mind before typing it rather than letter by letter searching. Two space keys is an excellent feature. I Don't mind waiting for features and updates, because basically this is an amazing free service. Smart phone landscape mode is good. The bad. No full stop in smartphone portrait mode?? Surely you could sacrifice one of the two shift keys for a full stop.

  2. Abhinav Basak-avatar

Layout is fine but has lot of usability issues particularly while using portrait mode. There is no delete button provided in number mode and one has to always return to alphabet mode for correction. How can they expect users not to make mistakes in number mode? Space button is also missing in number mode. Definitely no UX designer involved in the project.

  3. Ian Haber-avatar

Try to add the special characters as long presses. Also, it would be great if it had the intelligent features that android and swiftkey have. these are just things I think are mandatory if you want to compete in speed, particularly with flow and swype. until then I will be forced to continue using swiftkey. being brutally honest here, I think your best course of action would be to work with SwiftKey in getting your layout in there.

  4. Devieus-avatar

It's taking over the entire screen though, it'd be nice to have it edit on the spot without turning everything white. Also it could do with some arrow keys like the hacker KB, as well as the hold-key-for-capital thing, easier access to the hyphen. But it's a nice start, let's see how it'll look when or if at all it'll get finished.

  5. Evan Hargrave-avatar

I like it, but the portrait keyboards seem a bit cramped. Maybe there could be two pages for the numbers, punctuation, and special character? This would make room for delete and space keys. (Using Moto X)

  6. Andrew Cook-avatar

While any new keyboard layout is going to take a bit of time to get used to, I can quickly see that it would not take long to type fast with this and that movement across the screen is minimal. However my main gripe is that on a 3.5" smartphone the landscape mode introduces a full keyboard and makes it too small to use. This is the most natural way for me to hold the phone when two-thumb typing, and with standard keyboard gives me bigger keys, not smaller. If you have a tablet/phablet this would be fine.

  7. Justin Moran-avatar

I have downloaded it twice. Each time it downloads and completes. Then it installs. However I can not find an icon anywhere on my phone. I can only find it if I search Google play for it again. Or if I go to my downloaded apps and games. I can't even find it listed when I try to change my default keyboard to it. It is most likely some spyware or adware. Don't waste your time..

  8. 48caro-avatar

I think the shape is good but I didn't find the layout comfortable shouldn't the most used letters be on the outside under the thumbs? The unevenness of the keys was jarring. To me.

  9. Bryan Geiszler-avatar

My biggest problems with this layout are that there is no period visable in the main portriat view. There should be at least the most common punctuation available without switching screens. Also, for me, I would prefer the space keys to be a row lower. At first I thought that the size of the keys in landscape would be a problem but after using it I find that I have no trouble hitting the correct key. I have also just noticed that i have a strong preference for the right space key. I'm not sure why. Out of s

  10. Macy Soukup-avatar

It is easy to use and faster once you learn where all of the letters are. Some improvements could still be made, because it is still just a beta, such as adding autocorrect and having easier access to the symbols when using the horizontal screen. Overall it is awesome!!

  11. Juho Rajamäki-avatar

Great for English and delivers as promised, but for needs ä and ö for Finnish inputs. This slows typing too much. Otherwise 5/5

  12. A Google user-avatar

As someone with wrist issues, this works great! However, it's missing some characters, such as the symbol '^', which I often need for calculations :/ If possible, it would also be nice if the max height could be adjusted per mode (portrait or landscape). It's probably already on the list, but auto-correct and/or word suggestions would be awesome! Thank you for making this for free! P.S. to new users, read the description for installment instructions.

  13. Amanda Gray-avatar

I started looking for a new keyboard design out of frustration with my TV Netflix app that requires letter by letter entry using my remote control, and sends me fully back and forth across the query keyboard numerous times. I thought it'd be much better if the vowels were all together in the middle. I found your keyboard design and tried it on my phone. I’m not much of a thumb typer and I have the same complaints as many of the other reviewers (no period in portrait mode, no typing prediction) but I still think this keyboard would be an improvement on my TV Netflix app.

  14. Neil Short-avatar

Somebody needs to develop a typing system for tablets. The qwerty layout has always been klunky; and dvorak really doesn't work well for thumbs either. It seems a curved keyboard modeled off dvorak would work better; but that idea seems out of the question at the moment. For some reason, in landscape mode, an editor pops up and it doesn't support text "copy." This app is still in beta; so we'll hang back for now on judgment. SOME OBSERVATIONS: It feels like the letters on the left and right should be reversed. The vowels should be on the left. That feeling may be due to my familiarity with DVORAK layout. Everything is on the wrong side. update: the development process for this app is nonexistent. Nobody is rethinking the key layout; so... *uninstall*.

  15. geno supremo-avatar

Firstly: thank you very much for the effort of putting this together. Some functions I'd suggest down the line tho include del and space keys that persist between the alph & numchar pads, more intuitive autocaps (esp. after '.'s: autocap+space?), and as mentioned before; access to '.' & ',' on the alph pad - press and hold? Or perhaps split the numchar pad to 2 layers and set press-hold fn's for most of the alph keypad? Phew! That took a while to finish. looking forward to getting my WPM up. Thanks again

  21. Harrison G-avatar

This keyboard is amazing ... the only problem at the moment is possibly the predictive text feature missing which would make typing even faster

  22. Rocky Taylor-avatar

No good if you want to break your phone then download this appppppp I did and my Samsung galaxy s3 is ruined I'm suing the company cause of it

  23. Arnold Ip-avatar

The moving of the space bar is a pretty good idea, but I still have to swap to get to the period and comma...

  24. Hari Krishnan-avatar

Please Add voice typing option button Please make punctuation Easier I don't seem to be using left space bar button

  25. Jacky So-avatar

For me, it needs to add a button to switch from the English to a different input method when Im typing Chinese.

  26. Guy Swarbrick-avatar

Combined with SwiftKey's predictions it could be really great. Does need pound and euro symbols, though.

  27. Widcree Main-avatar

It is awsome! But really need some some little updates. I use it ever in my phones, I liked a lot

  28. Jay Meade-avatar

    Takes getting used to tho

I wish the DEL and Return buttons weren't right next to each other. That makes editing a pain. Auto-correction hasn't yet been released, but I can see that leading to a few problems. Obviously I don't have the data to generalize for everyone, but it's certainly a problem for me. Are two shift keys really necessary? I'd like a period easily available for a small screen. Otherwise, great job. I'm excited to see what happens with the next updates.

  46. A Google user-avatar

Couple of suggestions Is it possible to have the full stop (period) on the front page?

  47. William Pyles-avatar

I am unable to set my keyboard to KALQ. On Evo LTE and New Nexus 7. Installedand selected in the settings but then whenever keyboard launches it is the default google keyboard

  49. Richard Earp-avatar

The keyboard is very stable, especially since it's still in its beta phase. A couple of bugs however - occasionally I have to double press a button when I start typing otherwise it doesn't register (I always have to double press for each new word when using apps like Swift Typing Test). Also, on my s3 the buttons appear as small squares inside bigger squares, and when they're tapped a huge bubble comes up with another tiny letter inside it! Otherwise, excellent work. I'm now as fast as I am with qwerty!

  50. David Steele-avatar

I've been using the unofficial version for a couple of weeks and already I'm comfortable with it. I use a phablet so this version is unusable without larger keys. This is the future guys! Well done on some first rate research.

  51. Andrew Sumowski-avatar

    Andrew Sumowski

I have high hopes for this keyboard. Right now in beta it is unusable. First why are the letters so small. The letter should be the size of the square or close to it. Need a settings button on the keyboard. And I found a pretty big bug with the galaxy s3. When I switched back to my regular keyboard it would not let me select anything on my screen. Could not get into settings or anything. Had to reboot my phone to get it to work again. Once they work out the bugs I will give I another shot.

  52. Kris Goldby-avatar

I use a Note 2, the letters are too small, I can't see at a glance where letters are. I think the 'space bars' are in terrible positions, the space bar needs to be more differentiated from letter keys. And specific to phones; the function keys should be in the centre to allow for larger letter keys, its hard to presss the intended letter as they're so small, perhaps the numbers could also be on a switch, dare I say like in iOS . I love the idea, but the layout needs to be different on a phone perhaps.

  53. Claire Smith-avatar

Good app, and works well considering it's still a beta version. But I think the letters must be displaying incorrectly on the S4 as they are tiny! They're in a tiny white box within a bigger grey box, so there is space for the letters to be bigger if they utilised the space in the grey box. It's really difficult to see the letters and therefore difficult to learn to use, and it's impossible to type while walking because I can't see the letters well enough. Very good apart from this issue.

  54. Michael Lewis-avatar

My eyes are getting strained from trying to focus on the tiny letters in the middle of the keys. There is plenty of room to make the letters larger. Combined with a good prediction + error correction algorithm, this will be very nice!

  55. A Google user-avatar

I'm using a Nook HD+. I can't get up to speed even though I've got the layout memorized. All too often when I press the space bar between words or a punctuation character, The Next Character Is Capitalized. Once This Starts, I have To Type The Letter, Tap Back Space, Then Type The Letter Again. I haven't figured out a pattern of keypresses that kicks off the behavior. Other comments. When I'm zipping along, my fingers want the position of the letters I (eye) and L (ell) reversed. In portrait mode, I would replace either the underscore or | with - (dash) which I use much more often. Keep up the great work!

  56. Robert Gunter-avatar

I installed it on my phone but cannot find it anywere. I will uninstall and reinstall to see if that fixes the problem will rate and comment again later.

  57. Tyrae Doll-avatar

galaxy note The letters on the keyboard need to be made bigger. Mine are the grey bubbles with white boxes in them with very thin small dark letters. It is hard to see the difference between say the letters f and t when they are this small. Also having a "." period button on the smaller upright keyboard would be welcome also. Having to go to the number and symbols page just to end a sentence is very time consuming. All in all this keyboard has great potential.

  58. James Hartman-avatar

I like the concept in the layout is nice. I miss having the voice to text button. The keys also a little hard to read on a phone its not bad on a tablet but it still needs work I'll probably download it again when it gets out of beta..

  59. Ray Noppe-avatar

Tried is for a bit and it worked well. Comfortable and fast once you get used to the layout. Unfortunately it suffers from one fatal flaw that all keyboard (except for HTC one and Hackers) has included: Direction arrows for the cursor. Using a tablet / phone on public transport without them is a nightmare - trying to get your finger to move the cursor to the right place is impossible. If they include direction arrows to move the cursor, I would not only use this permanently, I would happily pay for it.

  60. Patrick Rooney-avatar

Even though I'm not used to it yet, I can often type faster than with the QWERTY layout. The only downside is that it's easy to make typos due to using your thumbs and the size of my phone's screen. Despite this minor flaw, I would recommend it.

  61. Virag Padalkar-avatar

Hi 1. The concept is quite promising. As is mentioned in the original research paper, it does not take users too much time to get used to a new keyboard layout, and they've backed this with actual studies. 2. However, an obvious miss in this version is intelligent prediction like what SwiftKey offers. That would enhance typing speed even more. 3. Another option missing is haptic feedback.

  62. Cameron Barker-avatar

Like a number of the other reviewers, I was looking forward to downloading this keyboard. I've been using it for about a day now, and the tablet layout is very user friendly, allowing easy typing in portrait and landscape mode whilst being able to hold the device, something that is considerably more difficult with a QWERTY keyboard. The position of keys takes a lot of getting used to, and my typing speed has rapidly dropped, but I am finding it easier as I go along. However, although I do recognise that this keyboard is designed for tablet use, on a mobile (which is what I type on more often), the buttons are a bit too small, and it is near impossible to type with the screen in landscape. Additionally, the numbers and symbols screen would benefit from a space bar and delete button, to allow multiple non-letter characters to be inputted more easily. Overall, though, this keyboard is very exciting and full of potential, and I look forward to the official release! EDIT: I just changed the 'Keyboard Height' on the settings, it now works great in landscape orientation on my phone :)

  63. Jahangeer Vellangallur-avatar

    Jahangeer Vellangallur

I hate it now, coz most useful symbols ( . & , Dot and Comma ) not added to main keys layout, every time we need to switch numeric keys to use comma and dots..... its strange.,.

  64. Felipe Varela-avatar

...But that potential is used in the worst way. The new layout is awkward to use at first, but is a good idea. The keyboard in itself is awful to the point where it's unusable. Once the keyboard gets better, I may change my review. (Reply to the developer) - I find that the keys are rather small, which reduces typing precision. And typing on it feels awkward in a way I can't describe, but makes it so that I cannot type comfortably on it. I understand that it's still in beta phase, and I still have high hopes for this, but for the moment, I prefer waiting for v1.

  65. A Google user-avatar

This is a totally different layout, but i can feel how it would be more comfortable once i learn it. Cant wait for some autocorrection. I am having trouble using it in typing games so i can learn, seems like the first key of every word i type doesnt register. I thought it was the game, but ive tried a couple with the same problem. Update - after more days of practice, I'm getting faster, but still not there yet. I do find this much more comfortable than qwerty and dvorak (my preferred layout on a regular keyboard, but not as comfortable for thumb typing). I love the location of the space bars - it's perfect. Here are some things I'd like to see improved / fixed: 1) Put a delete key on the number keypad. 2) Put common punctuation on the portrait mode ABC layout (? . , ' off the top of my head) 3) Auto caps after punctuation sometimes doesn't work. It never works at the beginning of the message. If I delete my incorrect lower case letter, caps turns on then. 4) Autocorrect - at least caps "i" and put apostrophes in common contractions

  66. Chris Norman-avatar

Looking to learn, but slow to start. Would be nice to have a delete key on the numbers screen. Can we also have double space give a period

  67. Ian Nicholls-avatar

Good beta. layout could be better with a few more punctuation chars on the main screen, and a backspace on the digits screen. On a phone size screen the keycaps are too small. OK on tablet.

  68. Tiia-avatar

I note this page says "What's New: Fixed Bug with small text on smartphones." However I downloaded this app to my HTC DNA and the letters on the 'keyboard' are microscopic. The special characters and numbers do appear normally. Would love to try this, but can't use in current form...

  69. Felix Jonathan-avatar

Can you make the alphabet shown in keyboard text bigger? It is kinda small compared to numeric and symbol text both in landscape and portrait. I think it would be better to put comma and dot in alphabet area too, since it have frequent use in texting. I guess adding double space to make dot feature in portrait will works too.

  70. Thomas Thurlby-avatar

I can see how this incorporates thumb texting but I feel more comfortable using a default keyboard. So I'll rate it a 3.

  71. Andy Besch-avatar

Good, i like the layout, but work needs to be done on the portrait mode for smartphones; delete and space keys on the char screen, long-press access to accented/alternative letters/chars. 5 stars when these come in to play ;)

  72. Motti Sir-avatar

+5star for new idea -2star for inproper interface in LG optimus G pro :( I think num-to-text and text-to-num button should be at the same place. I will try until left hand mode is released

  73. Steve Rogers-avatar

Maybe useful for a tablet, but not a smart phone. Buttons become even smaller, hard to locate and press. Screen is cluttered unnecessarily by way too many buttons. Should use less and larger buttons.

  74. Brian Murtagh-avatar

... it's going to be hard to learn it if I can't read the letters on the keys. Why are the letters inside smaller boxes on each key instead of utilizing the whole space? The numbers and symbols use the whole box, why not the letters?

  75. Nathanial Isaacson-avatar

    Nathanial Isaacson

How come the letters are so small? The white squares are so small too. I will wait for a fix.

  76. Dan Grimm-avatar

I'm learning the layout still, and would love to have bigger letters on the keys (maybe a serif font to help clarify i t j and l), press-and-hold for symbols on the letters, and a space key with the symbols.

  77. Miranda Down-avatar

Trouble is I couldn't read the letters they are so small.

Hi developer! I tried KALQ for a few minutes only and it was clear in this short time that the keyboard is really promising. Right now I'm using SwiftKey. The features that I feel your keyboard should develop is the autocorrect and word prediction. I'm waiting for these features to be a full blown KALQ user Amit
