    Update: still no updated patch for the app. It doesn't load content correctly nor let you cast. More popular titles seem to have less issues. Some even have audio bugs; crackling and other issues. Overall this is a really poorly made app. I want to watch the content but until they really work out a tremendous amount of issues I can't really use it. Can't cast anything. Only able to view on phone. Worst app of 2020? Not really, but it's a terrible app to pay such a high premium...

    apk App is broken; don't waste your time. On both wifi and cellular there's only audio, no video when trying to watch anything. I tried downloading multiple episodes of different shows and they have the same issue. There's no fix available online and I've spent hours troubleshooting. All other streaming apps work perfectly so I don't know why HBO can't get their **** together.

    The programming is really good but this mobile app, not so much. When casting a movie the phone inevitably goes to sleep and when I want to pause for a drink or whatever the controls are nowhere to be found at times when I wake it up. I recall when HBO first entered the streaming market the app was very bad. Looks like there are going to be more growing pains with the new model as well. I hope they're short lived.

    Good selection, and the app is sleek but needs to seriously be fixed. 1. Even when something is downloaded I keep getting the alert about cellular data every time my photo disconnects and reconnects even though alerts are turned off. Please fix this. 2. I have a keyboard for my (samsung) tablet that uses the tablet pins rather than BT. The slightest disruption in the connection causes the app to close/crash even though the keyboard isn't being used. NONE of the other streaming apps do this.

    The content is great. The app itself was... Marginal at release. It's gotten progressively worse it seems. The last few days has seen a new problem crop up where some shows seem to cast, others you tap on the play and it just does nothing while casting to my chromcast. I'm about ready to cancel. I know software is hard, but this is unacceptable. Edit: after this review, they at least fixed the issue I was having. Now I have access to the content I am paying for. Other concerns still stand.

    I love the content but my experience with the app on my Samsung smart TV is getting annoying. I have a wired internet connection to the TV so there should be little to no lag but I have been increasingly getting a can't play title screen or restart your app screen quite often now. I just paused it and and came back and it gave me a screen again. I hope the developers could iron out the bugs on this an update it soon. My tv has auto update turned on.

    Chromecast supports 5.1 audio, but shows and movies that are presented in 5.1 according to their description are presented in stereo instead. This is a casting app. Obviously, the only way to watch with surround sound is via Chromecast. Also, there are no options for modifying the appear of captions. Fix these features and it will be a 5 star app.

    Their developer messed up; they forgot to implement MediaNotificationService. That means that users have to keep the HBO Max app open nonstop after casting to a Chromecast, or else they lose their playback controls. Every other Android app shows a persistent notification while casting, but HBO couldn't hire even a middling dev.. I mean the Google Cast dev training example shows exactly how. They couldn't copy and paste 3 lines of code to improve their UX?! Edit: No, your update doesn't fix it.

    If I was rating HBO Max just on content, it would be my highest rated streaming service. But the app itself is a headache. It's incompatible with my Pixelbook and although I could initially watch via the browser, now I get an error message that it can't play anything. I get the same message on the app on my tablet. As of now, the only way I can watch anything is via the app on my phone. That isn't worth the cost.

    The content is ok, but the app sucks. Selecting an individual episode is a headache because once you click on a show it autoplays whichever episode it thinks you're on and there's no episode list button on some devices. They came out with a show specifically designed to fall asleep to, and there's no way to stop it from playing all night with obnoxious jarring ads for other HBO shows in between episodes. HBO stole a lot of content from other services, and frankly I miss watching it elsewhere.

    I am updating my review again after the recent update to the app. The app frequently stops and displays the following: "Cant Play Title. We're having trouble playing this video. Please try again later." It appears that the issues I reported earlier still remain after multiple attempts at reinstalling, clearing cache, and other suggestions made by the tech support team. The tech support was kind and polite but ultimately not much help. The app is buggy, and the reviews of myself and others reflect it.

    This application doesn't load over half the videos listed, and throws an "unable to play video at this time" error. There are no errors like that when trying to watch the same video on the PS4 application. Update: Worked through the recommended troubleshooting with no success. Was told I would be contacted by the application support team, but haven't heard anything in weeks. This app is too buggy to be worth the price.

    Great content, TERR. I. BLE. app. No videos will play on my phone app, have tried working through HBO Max Support and they had to escalate it and still can't fix the problem, and the next steps are too difficult for me to follow. This is not even getting into the inability to get the app on a smart TV we bought in 2018, so we have to CAST EVERYTHING TO THE TV. In a time where there are so many other streaming apps that function well, this is inexcusable for the monthly subscription cost.

    Doesn't send Surround Sound through Chromecast. Parts of the UI tend to get in the way of itself. UPDATE: Still no Surround Sound with Chromecast after update. REPLY: My Chromecast Ultra which is connected directly to my Surround Sound System only supplies 2.0 PCM when casting from HBO. All the content with a 5.1 indication I've tried only outputs 2.0 PCM. All my other streaming APPs output Surround Sound (Dolby Digital Plus 5.1). Amazon / Netflix & Disney+ all work flawlessly, except HBO MAX!

    The app FREAKS OUT when I unlock my phone, switching from landscape to portrait and back again. Please, please, please just use system settings. If I want it in portrait or landscape mode, I'll set it to portrait or landscape mode. Update: NOT connecting to chromecast. Every other app connects to chromecast, not this one. It just freaks out and exits. Update: Only Miyazaki films don't play on chromecast for some reason.

    I feel like it's getting worse, locks up after every episode and have to restart the app. Completely breaks after about 3 mins of mirroring to a device. I don't know who's to blame for this one but 24 hour wait period for new episodes is annoying. I'll watch it on TV and then makes me wonder why I even have this service. I feel like hbo wants this to fail. It's so bad hbo is basically becoming a meme at this point.

    I had to cancel HBO through U-verse and subscribe through Amazon prime. I had too many issue's with having to "cast" from my phone /tablet to my TV. Not as happy with HBO as I once was. They used to be the best in TV series & boxing but now seem to be in another Netflix or Hulu. That's not a horrible thing but it's definitely not the "must have" it once was.

    HORRIBLE app. HBO Max doesn't see the need for a contract with Roku, Amazon, or Vizio. For me, that means I need to use this abysmal excuse for an app for casting, despite paying full price. If you have tech issues, you may as well just jump off a bridge, because they CAN'T help you. They don't understand their programming enough to do anything but pass you off to an email system that NEVER responds or resolves your issue. Shame on you, HBO Max. You're discriminating against 65% of your viewers.

    Got this for doctor who and sesame street... I was excited for all the content... After installing the app on my phone I paid for my subscription... However, when I sat down to find the app on my TV I found that this app is not supported on roku... Or smart tvs (I think it's available on Samsung) so my options were to hook up my laptop to my TV or watch on my phone. Nope. And if you get it through Amazon or Hulu. There is only about half the content you get on the app... Which I don't understan.

    Someone needs to get off their @$$ and fix this problematic app! App has a ridiculous amount of glitches. The biggest one being how many times the app stops while playing. It happens throughout the entire program! With other similar apps running so smoothly, there really isn't any excuse for an app to perform this poorly.

    A waste of time... I have been using Max for a bit, but on my Chromecast Ultra which has no problem with Stadia at 4k, I cannot make it through a single show without major dropouts, glitching, sync issues, and watching at 360p for at least 10 minutes. Edit: I tried all that. Texh was no help. You can see above that my connection is fine. I should add, my Mother is hard of hearing, and complains that the subtitles are consistently off. Now that Peacock is on Roku, they are the clear winners.

    Update: I don't bother using without 5.1 audio as it sounds cheap so I'm not sure if Chromecast has other issues. Still no quality audio. ---5.1 audio is not currently supported on Chromecast Ultra. Website says it is. You would think while HBO is in the blaming others (Roku, etc) for not supporting them they would make sure the ones who do support them fully work. I think when there's quality audio this service will be pretty good. Can't wait for them to fix so I can start enjoying.

    It worked fine for a while but since the last app update I too have been getting the "Can't play title. We're having trouble playing this video" error message when I try to watch anything. Tried reinstalling, rebooting, clearing cache and storage. UPDATE 10/2: problem persists after an app update. Support said I'd be contacted by a tech person but so far nothing. The "previously on" recaps play fine, so streaming is clearly possible, but it won't play actual episodes. So is this a DRM issue?

    As much as I appreciate the expanded viewing choices for the same price, the effort required to watch content via this app has made me question how much I really want HBO at all. I've found 2 serious bugs: 1) The Play/Pause control sometimes just disappears during viewing, with no way to retrieve it other than exiting and reentering the application. 2) When using closed captioning, if I pause one show/movie, and start another, sometime the closed captions from the first show/movie start interspersing with the current source's. Aside from the bugs, in order to watch HBO Max content, I have to bring it up on my android phone, and then cast it to a Cromecast 2 hooked up to my display. I watch everything else through my ROKU 3, with far less hassle.

    I was very satisfied with this app until a couple of days ago when I could no longer cast to my tv anymore, the cast icon doesn't even pop up anymore. The only reason I had this app was to cast to my tv, without that option it is useless to me. Until it gets fixed, this app is garbage to me.

    This app does not work. HBO GO was better. This app should stream on any device. What good is an app that you cannot use? Tried to clear the cache, uninstalled and reinstalled the app, powered down and then powered back up my phone and changed the playback settings. Good luck. Too much work

    Horrible app to watch videos. Fast/back tracking is slow, non-existent. No "start from beginning". Impossible to binge watch any tv show or movie. To backtrack a video, I have to go in frames of 2-3 minutes and there's no button to "watch from beginning" or to start over. I fell asleep, I don't want to spoil the entire episode if I can't backtrack without going in frames of minutes and seeing still frame images while going back.

    Terrible app. Constantly stops playing and buffers, even if you have "downloaded" the content already. I have gigabit internet and excellent WiFi, can't play anything without it stopping to buffer. The only way to stop it from buffering is to download the content, then close the app, put the phone in airplane mode, then open the app again. It will warm you that you were offline, and let you play the downloaded content, and it seems like only then will the app actually work properly.

    I can watch any streaming device just fine but HBOMAx has a buffering issue. I watch 1 minute then buffers for 1 minute then watch for 1 minute then buffers for a minute fix your issue before I cancel my subscription I've never had this problem on a streaming device yet. And South Park is the main reason I wanted it. But if I spend as much buffering time as I do watch time I don't foresee me keeping it unless the issue is resolved

    I am somewhere in the middle. I have always been an HBO subscriber, but I feel like I have been robbed of more than HBO; I cannot access shows I used to watch (Netflix, Network, Hulu, and HBO) because HBOmax isnt accessible from my Roku or Firestick. I can access it from my phone, but I work from my phone 75% of the time and found the App does not allow me to grant permission for PIP so I cannot cast it or run it in the background while I do other tasks. This all-in-one app COULD be amazing!

    Love the content but the app is SO glitchy. And I just installed an update on my phone today; now the videos won't play across the full screen in landscape mode. ??? And I have NO options to click on to expand the arrows on the screen, nothing in settings. I've looked at screen ration settings. Not sure what changed in this update but it worked before this.

    HBO Max provides a large array of shows and movies to watch, and is unique enough to warrant a subscription for that. However, their app is visually unappealing, clunky, and extremely buggy and glitchy. Playback very often stutters and stops entirely, desyncing from the sound and in some cases freezing up, requiring an app restart. One cannot simply sit back and enjoy show after show, it requires constant attention to run smoothly. Until their app is fixed, my 2 stars go towards selection only.

    *UPDATE: after 3 months/no improvement, I give up--cancelled today* It's hard to understand how this app could be so dysfunctional. It continuously cuts out & tells the user it is having trouble playing the video and to try again later-even for downloaded videos. Makes it literally unusable for its purpose. It's also difficult to toggle between episodes though that should be easy to do. Judging from the multitude of previous poor reviews, HBO will thank me for my comment & do nothing to fix it.

    When I first got the app with ATT it worked fine on my tablet (trek) but for the last two months it doesn't allow me to watch, only search and browse. I have downloaded the latest update but it still does not work I can't watch it at home(Roku TV or fire stick. So I have HBO but no way of watching it) Update, app has been updated again and still can not watch any thing on my Android tablet, or my smart TV at home 😖

    EDIT: THE LAST UPDATE TO HBO MAX FIXED THE PROBLEM. APP IS WORKING NOW. Can't cast to chromecast. Loads up, but only plays audio. No video. No, it's not my configuration. I have a 2019 Vizio TV w/built-in chromecast. The apps for Netflix, HBO Now, and Amazon Prime all cast fine to my tv's chromecast. Just not HBO Max.

    Great content bad app, like most of the complaints my discord lies in the operation of the app. The cast feature is no longer available, additionally there is no app in the LG Store so I have no way to watch on my TV. Some of the content from HBO wil show on the regular Hulu app but its minimal. Really need to get on this guys...

    Hbo max on the tv HORRIBLE all I can find is HBO shows and the setup...don't get me started. The app is ok, but why do you want to watch movies or shows on your phone. I can go into my computer room and watch everything right there, but again not what I signed up for. Very disappointed with HBO.

    I'm getting sick and tired of this app freezing when I access it on my tv which is a Samsung Smart tv... it's getting old... it constantly times out...whats frustrating is I'm basically paying for an app thru my TV service that I can't use regularly....this keeps up...     Got my last issued resolved. The past few days all will not cast to tv. I even uninstall and reinstalled. Other app I use will still cast. Variety of movies and shows are great. Problem I'm having is when I'm casting to the tv the words are not Synchronized to the mouth. I'm running at 1 gig connection you think it would be better. None of my other apps have this issue.

    Until I can download AND be able to watch shows offline this will never go above two stars for me. Overall I love the app but today when I tried to use the app offline it told me I did not have a connection and would not let me watch my downloaded shows. Edit: It is evident that whoever replied to my review did not read it in its ENTIRETY. So I changed my mind. One star instead.

    I have been trying to get the FREE HBO MAX offered with 1000 speed internet from AT&T to no avail. They tell me I have to download the HBO MAX app to my TV. (No option to do this) Adding a premium channel on regular TV is as simple as flipping a switch. Why can't they do that so my receiver boxes can get HBO? I feel like I have been scammed into paying for faster internet speed for something they have no intention of delivering. Currently looking for new TV/internet provider!

    Doesn't want to play certain shows or movies. For the last few days anytime I try to play certain shows, like big bang theory or game of thrones, I am met with an error that they cannot play this video right now and to try again later. I tried bridesmaids and girls and they worked just fine. The only "help" I found is that it is my internet's problem. But it isn't. If I can stream one show or movie but not another there is something wrong on HBO'S end.

    I like the selection, I enjoy it a lot. However, the mobile app just started constantly buffering after some months. No matter on wifi or data, it's slow and the quality constantly drops. Im forced to use pc. Sometimes videos also bug out and "cannot be played", I found just refreshing a few times and getting to the episode through its link on the series page solved that. Please fix your app, I see no point in spending money on something that constantly fights with me.

    Not same on Hulu as on phone & Roku doesn't have seperate app. Love the content but you could include the same content on Hulu not even half is on there. If you don't then at least have an option on Roku device to download HBOMAX to get all the available content. Thats why the actual app is only getting 3 stars content wise 5 stars.

    Previously app loses connection to chromecast then duplicates listing of available Chromecasts on network. Now max Will not play titles when connected to chromecast you can disconnect and titles will play in app but play controls are non functional when casting. Confirmed on multiple devices in home. So instead of watching content I've spent my morning confirming it doesn't work... Guess I'll use my flipping roku to watch other content like I prefer anyway... So sick of hbo

    Won't play anything on my phone app.. figured I'd sign up because of the content but content doesn't mean anything if it won't play does it? Too bad HBO.. seems like a simple fix and could've had a new subscriber but guess you don't want one.. not even gonna bother trying it on anything else if this is my first experience

    The only thing I've found glitchy with it so far is disconnecting from chromecast. There's really no smooth interface to disconnect once the media player disconnects at the end of a movie, so then you have to restart the chromecast just to disconnect. Other than that it's been great having access to all of this great content and look forward to seeing how this app grows & becomes better 😊

    New app, same shenanigans as the old apps. Uses data even when you've downloaded content--have yet to stream anything that wasn't downloaded this week, and the app has used 7.5gb of mobile data, putting me over my plan limit for the month. Thanks guys, keep up the great work. HBO: great content, but please fire whomever designs your mobile apps.

    Worked great, til it stopped casting. Not sure if it's xfinity or HBO, but suddenly I can no longer cast from android phone to Vizio TV. Xfinity no help, claimed you cannot cast HBO to chromecast TVs with app and of course that's not true. I've been using first HBO go and now HBO max app for several years to cast to TV when at gfs house. Beyond frustrating, so I canceled it with xfinity. They're terrible with their various restrictions on in and out of home casting.

    Pile of garbage!!!! Nota streaming app not ever gonna pay past the free trial unless you fix it. I can't cast to my Vizio smart TV despite being on the same network, can't screen mirror through Google home can't watch anything tried reinstalling nothing will get the show on my TV screen!! I'll just buy what I'm trying to watch and never deal with the you again

    HBO has clearly just given up on their app development. Every single tenet of a good app seems to be ignored. I just wanted to restart my subscription right now, but it's poorly designed software made it difficult enough that I gave up. I hope HBO knows it's losing money due to its lack of investment in basic software.

    Content is great. The android phone app. . .not so much. I use a chromecast. When my phone screen closes, the app eventually looses connection to the chromecast causing intermittent pausing and loading. I have to unlock my phone and open the app for it to continue playing on the chromecast. All of my apps are updated and Google Home works smoothly for everything else.

    Access issues - resolved. Glitches - consistently crashes when streaming to chromecast. The stream goes on, there's just no way to access it for rewind/FF. Resume feature needed. Need a recently added tab, that's searchable by filters for genres, year or release, language etc. For shows, need sort filters to review content by year, genre, subgenres and language. Definitely WIP.

    No doubt this app does have a lot of great content, but what good is content if you can't watch it without contious bugging and cannot play content messages. Don't have this problem with Netflix or Hulu. I suggest releasing more content to hulu add on, at least make the subscription worth it.

    When casting, I lose all controls after switching apps, can't reconnect. No casting notification while casting on Android 11. Unwatchable on Chromecast, unable to pause once leaving app. Subtitles are somewhat broken on Chromecast as well. When there are hardcoded subtitles., Like in game of Thrones, (In Dothraki) appears over the top of what they are saying.

Currently continue watching has everything I have watched. I thought it was the me stopping just at t at the end of my program and at the start of the HBO Max commercial - nope.     Great content, garbage app execution. There's no motivation bar to easily pause/play shows. Closed captions turns off after every episode, so you have to turn it back on every single time. It commonly "forgets" that it's casting to Chromecast, so you have to restart the app to try toget it to connect just soyoucsn pause the show.

    Used to work, now every time i try to continue watching a show it tells me to subscribe or choose my provider it didn't compute my selection (and i just checked again i do have hbo max listed on my xfinity bill). It just flashes up the choose user screen for a split second then kicks me back to the same choose your provider page. So it's useless.

    Same issues across all HBO apps. Constant problem maintaining casting connection, as well as screen orientation flipping back and forth regardless of rotation on phone. The app is also not intuitive to navigate when you're in the middle of an episode to get to main episode list.

    Service lacks 4k and HDR, which is pretty unacceptable in 2020 and based on the competition + price premium charged. I primarily stream via Chromecast and the app doesn't play nicely (randomly disappears/soft disconnects on my phone controls). Sometimes I also resume content via an iOS device and the app doesn't recognize where I left off across platforms. This app and service really needs an overhaul that should have happened on the old apps but especially at the launch of HBO Max. Get on it.

    Great content. For me, it's the best deal out there. The app has a great layout for exploring content. Only 4 stars sure to recent hiccup with Chromecast and a different app on Roku. When content is available on both apps, they don't know what you've watched or where you left off.

Idk why they'd let their app run this horribly considering literally every single other streaming service (YouTube/hulu/Amazon prime/etc) runs perfectly. Why this app runs so poorly I don't know.     Would be great if app worked. Getting constant cant be played errors on some devices while it plays on others. No matter what I use it on zi get frequent buffering and quality drops. For a company this size charging this much they should have a decent working app... but they don't.

It wouldn't keep track of your current watchlist , takes you to random episodes and wouldn't let you choose other episodes from 'continue watching' tab.     Hello, I have the Samsung galaxy note 20 ultra and the screen aspect ratio is 19.3:9 Why don't the app give you a option to fit the whole movie in the screen like the vudu app or Google play movies? Having black bars on the either side of the screen is distracting. Please send a firmware update to correct this.

    I love this app but it doesn't working all the time. Every time I try to watch a new episode of a show (Lovecraft Country) on premiere night the sound is muted. Not sure why it does this but it would be nice if everything worked like it should.

    A great app to tell you what's on HBO Max A horrible app to actually watch what's on HBO Max. It has worked exactly once for me, and has otherwise told me that "Title can't be played right now" on a variety of options, all of which I have been able to watch when using other devices.

    Would not recommend. Takes days with every show they have. South park in particular came out days ago and they still haven't posted it. Try hulu instead. Much better app with way more options and what they have a new release its generally on the hulu app within 3 or 4 hours of the new episode first airing instead of 3 or 4 days like the lazy people at hbo.

    App is really glitchy. When casting, content will not play. I stop casting and it starts working. I start casting again, and the content immediately stops playing. If you are going to charge $15 a month you need an app that is developed to work correctly.

    The app is very easy to use. It also has good content. But I think they should show more Max movies on the app. It would be nice if they would show something like Mortal Kombat, the Great Wall, King Arthur legend of the sword. I love the anime that they have as long as it is in English. Love Howl's Moving Castle and all the other anime from the same man that wrote Howl's Moving Castle.

    I can't cast episodes to my Chromecast. I cam connect to the chromecast and the hbomax screen appears on the tv. I cannot play any episodes. If I disconnect I can then play the episodes on my phone. I do not want to watch on my phone. If I start the episode on my phone and then cast to the chromecast, on the hbomax screen comes up again.

    The Xbox app has lots of issues. The skip intro button dissappears after half a second then u have to pause and try to hit it. The ui in general is not great. Hard to skip to next episode of shows when it should be simple.

    Liking the mixture of content. DC, Ghibli Studios, Adultswim, etc. However, the user interface comes up a bit short. One of the most glaring stumbles is the lack of video control once I'm casting to an external device. There isn't a way to fast forward, rewind, or pause what I'm watching. Also when listing content A-Z the app uses the ENTIRE SCREEN to show you 4 movies/shows.

    Content great. App... not so much. I have HBO through Xfinity/Comcast and up until today, no issues with the HBOmax app. Today it kept saying to renew my subscription. I'd log out & attempt to log back in w/my provider info, but the app continued to auto populate my login info. THIS IS HOW I FIXED IT: Uninstall the app. Once you reinstall, go into your Apps via the settings on your phone. Scroll down to HBOmax and clear BOTH the cache and data for the app. Then the app will let you log in.

    This app is garbage! Yes, it works okay with my Samsung tablet. HOWEVER, this app deliberately blocks all feature video content when you cast it to your smart TV! Naturally, all the crappy HBO commercials before the feature cast flawlessly to the TVs before the featured content. Gee, thanks HBO...NOT! On the tablet, the video continues without issue. This is unacceptable and needs to be addressed YESTERDAY if HBO Max wants consumers to get behind the service.

    Fix my problem. I HAVE DISABLED SUBSCRIPTION RENEWAL until you fix it. I've been a subscriber for years. Every time I try to stream video on my phone - on WiFi or via cellular data - I get an error that reads "Can't play title. We're having problems, try again later" It has been doing this for weeks. I've cleared app data and deleted the app, reinstalled the app and signed in and out of my account. I like HBONow/HBOMax but I will not pay for it when I can't use it on my lunch at work.

    HBO MAX content is great. The App is terrible. No support on the App. Will not show the casting icon to stream to TV. It was there before, but after updates it will no longer cast to any of the tvs.

    I get sound but no video playback, just a black screen. The amount of titles in the library is amazing though. 5 stars when i can actually watch something.

    I wanted to cast Studio Ghibli films to my Chromecast, but this didn't work for ALL of my devices. I was able to cast other tv shows and movies, but not any of the Studio Ghibli ones.

    Great content, but the app is trash. Slow and buggy. Its 2020, why are videos buffering like its 2000? Y2K delay, maybe? Fix this, please.

    The app streams files over the network, even if you have the episode downloaded. Make it play downloaded files by default. I shouldn't have to go into my profile -> downloaded to play a downloaded file. If I download it, let me play it from "my list", "continue watching", and the series page. Judging by a Warner Media Direct response to another user's review on September 21, 2020 this appears to be intended behavior for the app. BAD!
