Ghost Commander is a dual-panel file manager (as well as a FTP, SFTP, SMB, WebDAV, Drive, BOX, Dropbox client!) which will let you to manage your files locally or remotely as well as tweak your system in the root mode.

This is an open source software (see and does not show any advertisement! The project exists only because of your donations.

The main idea behind the user interface is classic: copy and move files from one panel to another. Simple.
Also, to not overload the display with extra checkboxes, file selection is made as follows: each file row is divided by two zones: tapping on the left you open files and folders, tapping on the right you select multiple items. If you are left handed, that could be swapped in the settings.

Writing access to external sdcard drives and USB OTG is provided through a special "Storage Access Framework" mode. Native mode can give only a read-only access to external drives.

Ghost Commander supports FTP and SFTP servers and Windows network shares, as well (with plugins) as Google Drive, BOX and Dropbox cloud storage, plus it can create/extract crypted ZIP archives and work with them as it was a regular folder.
For advanced users, this file manager also supports root (superuser) mode, which is essential to work with protected system files on a rooted devices, like tweaking the system, change file permission attributes/owners (chmod/chown).

This file manager is very customizable and comes with a lot of options which allow you to adjust its appearance and behavior to your personal tastes and habits.

Here's a list of the file manager's features which include, but are not limited to:
* easy sorting by name, extension, size or date
* customizable multiselect (by tapping, or select by wildcards)
* root / superuser (su) mode: remount partitions and make changes in system files
* change file owner and permissions (in root mode only)
* modifying files on external SDcard via the Storage Access Framework (SAF) mode
* ZIP archive support: create and extract ZIP files, view inside a ZIP without extracting
* built-in FTP client: upload to/download from your own site or a public one
* favorite shortcuts for folders and locations
* calculation of file and folder size and MD5 and SHA-1
* file search by content and other properties
* text editor (built-in or external)
* text and picture viewers
* sends files via email, Bluetooth and so on
* personalization: colors, font size, interface language, custom toolbar, etc
* Windows network support via an optional SMB plugin
* Streaming audio/video from a remote location to a player app
* Access to the Google Drive, Dropbox and BOX or any WebDAV enabled cloud storage (with plugins)

Reminds me of my Linux Computer. Once you get used to it, it's great! Better than Google Files! 'Open With' needs work, forgets last choice. '?' file mask does not work in Android.

  2. Ali Reza Abedi-avatar

ghost commander file manager Great app. I have tested lots of big name apps but ended up using this modest and yet powerfull app. Steep learning curve but super fast file explorer. Love it.

  3. S Watson-avatar

ghost commander file manager permission denied In a way i like this better than total Commander.. It's a tiny file with an interesting side by side interface.

  4. phhpro-avatar

download neat app. plugins are ok but at least most common stuff should be internal. e.g. sftp, gdrive... ux definitely not for newbs.

  5. Creativity Consultations-avatar

    Creativity Consultations

🌟=3.75, can you do a video about specifically how to enable using Dropbox, Box, Google's Drive? through your app. (because it's NOT as simple as install & use -[immediately] after downloading the Plug-Ins mentioned above.) Also; what's the thinking behind the name of this Apk??

  6. Jon Doe-avatar

Free, open source, no ads, great to use. Thanks!

  7. Roland Haas-avatar

Best file manager I have used so far. Sftp and smb access works very well.

  8. e b-avatar

Best FOSS option. Fully featured. UX not that good.

  9. Gustavo Lasfiga-avatar

    Gustavo Lasfiga

One of the best out there, NoAds,opens zip, reminds its older brother total, or was it cousin? Like it a lot, simple and short user guide after disclaimer better be read.

  10. Marc Dorcean-avatar

Nice dual interface. Nice overall feel. Only thing i don't understand is why the "home" link sometimes is there (bottom menu bar), and sometimes it's not. Also, I have yet to find out how to multi-select (if this functionality even exists)...and if it does exist, why so hard to find?

  11. John Leclerc-avatar

Very nice. F-droid and Ghost Commander are definitely steps in the right direction away from "be evil" Google. The polished layout, formatting, use of complete text info (not damn truncated- what's the point of that?) is impressive.

  12. Shane Jansen-avatar

TLDR: Most excellent. Ad free. Highly recommended. I hadn't really used a Commander style file manager prior to this but that didn't take long to overcome as it is quite intuitive. Once I started using this app the previous file managers were soon uninstalled as the functionality available in this app is quite extensive. I do have one request if I may: could you please implement the same regular expression functionality that is used in the "multiple file rename" in the Search/Filter screen?

  13. A Google user-avatar

TL;DR This app is perfect! It is featureful, intuitive and FOSS. This app is a dual-pane file manager. For copying, you go to a folder in both panes and copy from active to the inactive one (and back by maling the other active.) For selecting, it has basic globbing support and a filename-based diff function. Just manually tapping works too, ofcourse. It has plug-ins for connecting other filesystems. This works so well that sftp feels like sshfs. ------- Really, it is worth learning this one.

  14. Rachel Thompson-avatar

Great, thank you devs for creating this app! I installed this on an ASUS C100PA Chromebook - it was the only file manager I found that was dual-pane (having used Total Commander on Windows for 20 years I need this!), used the whole screen width (many will only use phone-style portrait mode), allowed discovery of and writing to the SD card, and allowed connection to Google Drive.

  15. A Google user-avatar

To complex for me. I'd love to be able flick on these type of apps and set up a FTP, or something of that nature and do away with the continuous wires I seem to be forever using. But this app didn't help. Seems to me you need a great deal more knowledge than I have to get the most from this app.

  16. Rick R-avatar

I liked the layout, but the issue with permissions is a problem. for example I installed total commander and it's able to read write and delete files on my SD card without any problem. I know you recommend using the framework option but other apps don't seem to require it.

  17. Stephen Haslam-avatar

Hi, Thought I'd give this app a try. My machine is a new Samsung Tab S4, running latest Android v9, stock, unrooted. When tapping on "Local Storage", I was jumped to /system/storage/emulated/0/, from there I could not get to / (root) and go from there. Using a menu option to 'Change Location' to '/' I got a warning message, I tapped 'ok', and recieved a 'invalid location' message. My usual file manager allows me to, so for now, will go back to it.

  18. Jon Nigrine-avatar

Powerful. UI is.complex, could probably get used to it but it's way more than i need. Text is quite small and its size doesn't appear ro be adjustable. This makes reading hard, but also gets in the way of selecting items precisely in lists. Using a Pixel 2. Might be better on a larger screen.

  19. David Reeves-avatar

Just installed and not done exploring this. WOW! it looks good... Just used GC to delete 7 unwanted file from a dir on this (new) droid 8 phone. Couldn't find another ad-free FM that would. Have been poking around in GC's available functionalities. Appears that a very expert programmer made this. I'm sending some $ as soon as I can. EDIT 31July19: Dang! This thing is POWERFUL! I can open txt files with it in another 'window', copy/paste, see directories, file types.. A lot like PC right on phone

  20. Æ BUSS-avatar

SD Storage Links, Transfers, System Synchronisation!

  21. James Tabang-avatar

Best I have tried was Total Commander, but this app has even lesser size and is open-source, with almost comparable features with Total Commander. Best of all, this app detects the MIME type of files which is the first I have encountered in a file manager. Very impressive.

  22. John Hopkins-avatar

Glad I took the extra time to figure this out. You need to install the Ghost Commander SFTP plugin app by the same vendor to get SFTP functionality. Once that was done it was smooth sailing. Great app!

  23. Timbits Simski-avatar

Cannot show grid of thumbnails. Cannot create directory on SD card (fails where others had no problem). I was enthused to find a project without ads, but it clearly needs more work before it is ready for prime time.

  24. Joel Rodriguez-avatar

Great app! Just what i needed....dont get any recovery app their all bulpshiz just use this to find accidently deleted media free no 200$ dollers fee... I was looking for video deleted and tried those recovery apps n they are useless... Thanks to this i found my deleted file, video, pics Don't waist your time with other apps this is the tool for you

  25. Michael Minor-avatar

While I have sometimes found navigation through the filesystem with Ghost Commander confusing, it's always worked when I have needed it. Decent and ad free. Decided to give another 🌟 for being ad -free.

  26. A Bible For All-avatar

    A Bible For All

A little difficult to change from an IBM-PC running MS-Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS 5/6 to all these "different" types of devices with touch-screens and "different" types of windows and menus (MIS?).

  27. A Google user-avatar

My 1st review was "6 Stars". Downgrading to 4. I was surprised that I could NOT search my sd card! Error message that search was only available for internal storage. What am I missing here, doing wrong?

  28. David Back-avatar

2019-03 Ph1 Nougat. Tried it several times across multiple phones -Just does not connect to any Samba shares, ever. And user interface is awful-how do you return to home screen once it goes to (failing) Samba connect pages? Just terrible.

  29. Cryptic Void-avatar

No need to look any further. Free and open source software, works great and fast. That's what software should be like. Kudos to the developers and all the people who are helping!

  30. kathy ouellette-avatar

    kathy ouellette

add multiple delete option and it would be perfect. helped me find hidden thumbnails that were from deleted images and thank you so much for that. only file manager i managed to find that does this

  31. Robert Nobinsky-avatar

    Robert Nobinsky

Potentially good but needs much improvement. Good feature set BUT --- Poor UI. Poor file xfer op speed. - only about 20% of other apps.

  32. Elijah Softley-avatar

the new version gives this error on start up and when trying to access menu: Alert | an exception occurred with code c00000001 Failed to connect :<00>/ Has this app become a virus?

  33. Ahsan Ali-avatar

Good but there should be ftp server option with ext card file received option so that devices act as an ftp server.... it just has ftp client option..... keep the good work up guys....

  34. A Google user-avatar

Best file manager. I had to go to settings > misc, and uncheck 'open using content provider' to get files to open using preferred default apps as set in Android.

  35. Doug Jobe-avatar

Works good but found out later that when using with Nook books, it would not remember the page last read.

Instantly my phone froze, not responding. It looks like a good app with a lot of good qualities. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. I wish that it would have.

  37. A Google user-avatar

Useful application for managing files, including root access. Plug-in applications allow SMB access too.

  38. A Google user-avatar

An advanced version of File Manager, Notepad and very customizable for theme and accent colors (even other great features). Congratulations!!

  39. David Evans-avatar

doesn't show all the files in the folders. and touch sensitive is too much. clicking on a folder marks folders instead of opening. give us control of adjusting touch sensitive.

  42. James Kirby-avatar

Overly ccomplicated and confusing.. definitely not for novices

  43. Prashant Patel-avatar

Fast... smooth... ad free... simple yet powerful.... and above all <1mb size.. that's all we want

  44. Jonathan Silveus-avatar

Cant see or edit the system storage or whatever its called but it doesn't harvest data as far as I can tell.

  46. My Android-avatar

  47. Lorne Irvine-avatar

It works it makes sense I like..But it can't write to sd anymore :(

  48. T Fries-avatar

Ok. Maybe I'm a dumbass and can't figure it out , maybe I need a plug-in. Why in the name of chicken tetrazini can't this app open rar files as well as zip ? There is my deal breaker.

  49. Aim Shaari-avatar
