The app is great and well put together. However the brightness adjustement (that is in the apps' settings) is not working properly for me. Sometimes it does working and dragging the finger down really does lower the brightness but recently it has not worked. I don't know why. This feature really helped when reading at night and then during the day. So pleeeeaaaase fix it!!

My go-to book viewer 70-80% of the time. Superior pagination for EZ navigation and excellent image support for illustrations. Poor PDF support is only major flaw, the PDF viewer works, but suffers lack of usability. TTS reader capability could make this THE 5* "Must-Have" eReader app.

  8. Jack-avatar

The best reading app I've used for android by far. The only real problem I've had is on a new device, for dinner reason is I turn the brightness below 26% the screen will just turn black. Doesn't effect my comfort too much but I would prefer the brightness being lower sometimes.

Fabulous! Ive been using this app for 7 years and i absolutely love it! If I've changed a phone or device I've always downloaded and redownloaded this app. It's my favourite reader.

I've used this app for years and also have the premium version. Very little to no problems. The only thing I would love would be a better way to filter your libraries (eg by % of reading progress)

Have the free version, and I have been quite happy with it until recently where it no longer stores books I've read (ie. Listed in Recently Opened/Recently Added, or even under authors name). I do not want or need the pay for version....but is this a ploy to get me to purchase it? If so.....there are alot of other readers I can use instead.

I love reading, and I love reading my Standard Ebooks and Project Gutenberg ebooks on FB Reader. It's a very simple app, but all the better for that. I've used it for several years on two Android devices, and it's always been flawless. Unless it got borked through some strange upgrade, I wouldn't look elsewhere.

The most amazing thing abt fb reader is you can decrease your brightness along with night mode plus this amazing zoom in/out option... Which I tried in several apps but nada.... This is the best when you're a night owl... I juss luv swipe/Flick which is much better then vertical scrolling.. I hateee vertical scrolling... Tysm fbreader💜💜💜...... Fab since foreva!!!!! I have been using FBR for a long time. It was the go to app for a bookworm like me. Unfortunately had to change my phone, and reinstall all Apps. FBR was the 5th or 6th App downloaded and installed. It simply does not work, it does not identify or add the books, it does not show the books, it has been crashing regularly, and making life miserable in general. At first thought, something wrong with phone, so uninstalled and reinstalled it (thrice). Nutshell, Bye Dodo, it was nice knowing you.

Like others, pretty disappointed with this recent update, which messed up the FB TTS reader plugin's ability to easily work with the main app. I don't have paid version and I'm hesitant to buy premium for the TTS because I liked the free plugin so much. The plugin was nicely customizable and I was able to get the accent and voice exactly how I wanted it. Not sure if I can count on the premium version for the same. Luckily I've been able to still use the plugin with the app, but it's much more tedious to set up, especially if I want to swap tabs and pause or rewind/fast-forward. If any one can let me know if the premium read-aloud is exactly the same as the FB TTS, I would appreciate it. (with access to the google TTS voices and acents) If this isn't fixed or is made worse, I'll have to move to another app for the convenience, though I've yet to find one that has the right amount of customization as the plugin.

The app itself is good. The UI could be more straightforward, but everything works as expected. One thing bothers me, though. Why on earth would you change the background of the app icon to blue? Almost every other app (including all google apps) on Oreo 8.1 has a white background and only FBReader is gonna stick out like a sore thumb. Why?

My go to ebook reader. I used to use google play books and kindle then discovered this and the plethora of great public domain books. Many of the classic adventure novels are in the public domain and tons of other interesting stuff to read. If you want to read a lot of new releases, not sure how this app works for those. But thats not my thing. Also use the TTS plugin along with googles British male voice. It does sound a bit machine-like but it doesn't bother me. It's like my own low tech AI reading to me in a soothing modulated voice. And he's got a British accent, what's not to love about that. Anyway, great app. And great paired with the TTS plugin if you are a person that doesn't get hung up TTS voices not sounding human enough.

I specifically chose this app for the ability to have all my bookmarks available when i needed them. So i'm satisfied with what it offers. I use the app on 2 devices(phone and tablet) and the thing i'd also like to have is the ability to seamlessly resume my reading on the page i left on the other device

It's a nice e-reader with a clean interface and some nice features. The library sorts are fairly intuitive, and the app runs quickly. Handy brightness and font adjustments when reading. I'm frustrated by the fact that the library doesn't seem to update or refresh epub metadata. Whatever you have for author or series metadata when you load the app, you're stuck with even if you change the metadata later (for example, if you have authors with some epub files sorted firstname - lastname and some sorted lastname-firstname, it'll stay that way in FB Reader libraries even if you edit the metadata. Also the only dictionary app I can get to work with FB Reader is Dictan, and that isn't the most user-friendly interface.

  26. Jeremy King-avatar

This is my favorite e-reader. It's so simple and lets me read my own epubs and pdfs, opening files from a directory browser with no muss and fuss. After many years of using the free version, today I upgraded to premium. very affordable with qualitative and quantifyable benefits. If e-reading is how you get your read on, and your books come from varying sources and in varying formats--FBReader has your back.

  27. Just me-avatar

DOES NOT have continuous vertical scroll as standard in many apps LIKE "Moon+ Reader", "Lithium reader" & specially "ReadEra" which has the best vertical scroll with cache & not stopping at end of chapters.

Nice app, but wasn't optimized for screens with rounded corners. Particularly, for Realme 6 pro. So, I can't see the battery level in left bottom corner.

  32. Lee Haslup-avatar

I have the premium edition and I use the Read Aloud function to 'read' EPUB books while I walk my dog. Some reviewers have compared the premium Read Aloud function unfavorably to the plugin for the free version. I haven't used the separate plugin so I can't speak to that but the Read Aloud function in the premium edition works well. At first the app had a tendency to crash when I tried to configure the Google Text To Speech voices but that seems to have gone away. I find the voices with a UK accent suit me best since the occasional mispronunciation stands out less when all the words are said in a charmingly odd way. My only irritation (and the reason for the missing fifth star) is that the rewind/go back function gets stuck on short sentences. When the button is pressed the app backs up to the previous sentence. If it is quite short there's no way to press the button fast enough to get past it. If the text contains "No. That's not right." you can't back up past the "No."

the app is enjoyable to use. sadly, I can't annotate with it. it does avoid using a lot of RAM & battery which are big problems with other ebook reader apps. I'm not sure how to make the extensions work. they do interest me a lot. point being, i haven't used this app regularly for a very long time. it does make reading free ebook files super enjoyable without having to rely on Amazon to not be a flake. 3.5/5 stars. rounded up because i want good things for this app & it's nice.

  35. kevin wappler-avatar

    kevin wappler

Best reading app for eBooks. Used it since 3 years and it's still great. Only four stars because the app keeps asking you for a play store rewie. That popup overlays other menus and plugins and left them unusable sometimes. Second thing is cloud sync only with Google drive. All my books are stored on my nextcloud, why not my reading status too? Sync btw works flawless and fast between multiple devices. You can sync only reading status or complete with books. Simple the best.

  36. Rebecca Pearl-avatar

Fbreader is a decent basic reader app but navigation of book catalogs isn't straightforward and therefore tedious. This makes the premium version a big improvement. HOWEVER. You will never be able to take this paid app from one device to another should you get a new phone or tablet. The site and developer give useless directions on how to make this happen but in the end they just want another $6. Which is why I can't post this on the premium app with my new phone.

I would give it a 5 if I was able to sync it with a desktop version along with all the highlights. Pretty much a google play books that let's you customize more things.

  38. Janet Story-avatar

    Janet Story

The good: displays covers and other images more or less correctly and allows my own css to override its own settings. This is what I was looking for since the reader I was using has stopped displaying covers and full page images. The bad: it's hard to get into the menu and I can't get rid of the introduction "book". This should not be a start screen; app should open to library like other readers. Also, doesn't look like it supports vertical-align property per epub3.

The app keeps crashing CONSTANTLY since the updates. It's terrible. I've had this app close to 4 years and this has never happened. It's really disappointing. Free TTS is still there but no longer available through the app. You need to open the TTS plugin which then takes you to your books. 1 star knocked off for hiding TTS. Have used this app for several years. There are other reader apps equally as good but the reliability of the TTS is what I love about this app.

  42. Vin-avatar

Honestly a pretty good reading app that I might revisit. This review is from a trial I did as I was testing several readers. It features a wealth of options including manual margin entry, solid interface customization, and above average formatting. I found no option for continuous vertical scrolling which is a buzzkill for me. It did not initially recognize all books in the storage location, though did still open them if manually navigated to. In my only hour or so trial I had a freeze/crash.

Love the app. I paid for the Pro version because it is so good. My only problem is with the text to speech system. Each time I try to initialize it, it pops up the language selector. Its annoying, but i deal with it all the time on my LONG commutes.

  44. Mihhail Subin-avatar

    Mihhail Subin

I think that adding your own 'read aloud' feature as a paid option while there is a free plugin available, and then preventing that free plugin from appearing on the menu is dishonest and greedy. Update: communication with the TTS plugin has been restored. I have explored other reader options while the plugin was not working, and discovered that it is very difficult to identify the books downloaded via fbreader in other readers (the files have numeric ID instead of book name).

Everything is ok. But. I've ran into a problem. When we highlight a text on Android we can see the features list. One of them is translating. Almost all time we can use the native Google translate. But not using this app. Why should I use the unnoun Dictan? Do you know that no one have a .zd dictionaries in 2k19?

I physically have no way to access the settings to change the font size and there is no answer anywhere online or notification that I need a different app to do so. The app still works but this is beyond frustrating for such a simple problem Edit: thanks to the quick help of the developers, my only frustration is gone and I'm very much enjoying the app now.

Associated with file types that are only supported on the "premium" version. No settings to dissociate the file type from app. Android OS will attempt to open the open the file with this app but nothing happens with the free version. No errors reported, user has to figure out for them selves why the app attempts to open the file and nothing happens.

The best for Text-To-Speech. Please, will be very good for impaired/blind people an option for open next book automatically and continue the TTS with the new book (whithout using the screen). Will be good too a very very big text font size (even one word for the whole screen). Thanks for your job.

Used to used this with the text-to-speach plug-in occasionally to read a document out loud. Unfortunately, it seems the Devs have chosen to disable this TTS function in the free version, & only allow it in the paid version. Therefore I now use @VoiceAloud Reader. Oh well.

It's ok. Certain basic functions are missing and need additional plug ins. What's worse, is it can't keep the right book loaded. Switch away and back and it's changed what book is open so you have to reload what you are reading. There are better options.

I really like the app but having bought the premium version it's a shame to discover that if I want it on my new phone I have to purchase it all over again. This app just feels dated. Even with my love for old school I can't enjoy the style of the app and the way the books are shown in it. It feels rather like a tool to just somehow get a glimpse of the contents of the fb2 file than a solid app for enjoyable reading.

I have almost no complaints about the app. But why does it not delete the books fron tge device even when asking to do so? They only disappear from the shelf interface. My ebook directory is full and I need to manually delete them and renember which books I have yet not read.

I use this a lot,. It's one of the first things I install on a new phone. Has a lot of settings so you can customise it to work and look the way you want. I use the free version with no inconvenience. Great app.

I love this app and use it every day, but it has recently started to randomly switch the font size to very big letters. When I adjust it, it works fine until the app is closed and re-opened. Then the writing is minuscule!

Used to be great, now they spam the premium version and the "no, thanks" option is untappable and cannot do anything except exit the app. (and then load a reader that doesnt pull this nonsense). bye byes

I have been using the reader for about four years now and I have never been disappointed for once. I try out different other readers every other month but I finally come back to this one. It is just awesome.
