Good app and has all the features I would need as of a book reader, except TTS for all file formats that contain text, a pdf text or pdf OCR. "Reading Aloud: Built-in. Uses any text-to-speech engine installed on your device. Does not support PDF and DjVu at the moment." Purchased this up in high hopes that this discrimination will be ended :-) Thank you

  2. Kalebe Alves-avatar

Some annoying ux choices. The most annoying thing is that the read aloud doesn't have on screen controls. This way, you must click on the book, click on the read aloud, just to activate the controls... Once I'm already listening keep the fracking controls on screen. The way it is right now it's a horrible design. I hate so much that I bought and I stoped using.

One of the best ebook readers out there. I really love the built-in TTS, though I was disappointed that the speech customizations available in the plugin are missing. The local catalog is good, but there's no way to filter out all the books that are 100% read from my catalog view (a real annoyance when trying to find unread books in a large local library). As a result, I have to rely upon other apps to track my progress. These two fixes, or at least the 2nd one, improve this from 3 to 5 stars.

  4. Bohuslav Seda-avatar

    Bohuslav Seda

Great reader. Flawless sync between Android and Apple devices. If only the highlighting would be as easy as with Kindle Android app (adaptive reaction depending on amount of selected words, if more words selected it is automatically highlighted, ...). That is the only feature I miss. The highlighting experience is not yet sufficiently efficient, it unnecessarily takes more time than needed.

Excellent. By far the best reader. > Is there any way to drag on right hand side to adjust brightness, as with iOS version?

I really love this app. It really is the best ebook reader I've found. Two issues. One is that the text to voice plug in is a bit awkward, and always reverts to the American voice. The second is that there's no docx plugin. I'm a writer and I like to read my writing in fbreader to give myself a more objective view. But all my documents have to be docx because you can no longer save docs in Google Docs. So now I can't use fbreader to read any of my writing.

Great app, the free version was so good that I made the leap of buying the paid version. The developers have put in a great amount of effort and it shows. Simple, stable and endless fun reading books. Best thing is, my books are synced across my devices.

Its a Fantastic app. I like it so much for its unique zig zag pattern scroll option. It helps me read large scanned pdfs on small screen devices flawlessly.I would give it 5 star but one important feature is missing even in paid version that is free hand annotation on scanned pdfs.A basic free hand annotation would help me annote my scanned pdfs while reading. I would request developers to add this feature to my make this app as my one stop solution for all of my ebooks and scanned pdfs.

Keeping the Read aloud option on, text cannot be read properly. We can either listen or read...which is not worth it... This feature is very helpful which is seen in a App "Elocance".... i think if we get this feature in the premium version that would be amazing....and worth a 5 stars.. Okay.. Edited: Thank you Dev for listening and Considering the idea for an update...

I love this app, but I installed it on a new device, and there is no longer a speak+ tab in the drop down menu at the upper right that allows me to minimize the speak+ controls. I'm stuck with the play, ff, rewind and stop in a box blocking the book text. Is there a way to minimize this?

The best ebook reader by far. Less intrusive with fewer permissions than the big guys. Very customizable. Glad I was able to support the dev (a little) by buying the inexpensive premium version some time ago, after using the free version.

The best of the 7-10 e-readers I've tried so far. My two biggest wants? Add more customization options for areas on the screen to turn pages. Many other readers such as Prestigio are highly customizable in this regard. This really is a pain. 2nd is more minor, but please fix the progress bar at the bottom of the screen. There is no mark on it to indicate progress, which makes it fairly useless. Apart from that, very good!

  46. Gina Mc-avatar

Love it, love it, love it. But recently, it won't let me go to Recently Opened, or Titles without crashing. I closed the app, and opened it again, and went to choose a different book, and it crashed again. I've been using this app for years, and this is the first time this has happened. I download the books onto my SD card so running out of space in the app shouldn't be a problem. I love reading books on this app otherwise, but I don't know what the glitch is.

  47. Mark Humphrey-avatar

    Mark Humphrey

This app really needs caching for cover thumbnails. Every time I close a book and go to my (local) library, I have to wait about 10 minutes for it to regenerate the cover thumbnails. There is also a bug where if I switch among 2 or 3 books, after I've closed the 3rd, it will stall generating the thumbnails and I have to close and open the app for it to work again.

  48. P Offutt-avatar

    P Offutt

This had been my ereader for years now. but I'm going to have to switch. every time I open the app, I have to refresh the titles. several times a day. I've sent support a question about it but have not heard back (sent 7/26). it is still usable, still fast, but the rescanning (which takes a while) is breaking its back.

  49. A Google user-avatar

    A Google user

This latest update would not allow this application to access my book Library from the SD card installation area. This is where I store most of my applications. It is forcing me now to install to the internal memory. I will change my review when they change this application to running the way it was before. There is also a beta icon on my paid version of this app now. I loved this app, enough to pay for it!

The interface is very fluid, gdrive backup works great. However, it is impossible to navigate to some commands like installing plug-ins, looking up words and the speech functions. I did installed the TTS plug-in but it does not work. Those features worked great in the free version, so sad it is so much trouble with the premium.

  51. Rudy Tan-avatar

    Rudy Tan

Great app. It would be nice if it can support file that is more than 200MB. Or maybe just let us upload the big files directly to the cloud (google drive) and FBReader server just make a fake/initial meta data by scanning the cloud folder so we can download it in devices. Once we download the file, the local device can make a proper meta data and upload it to FBReader server. A bit roundabout, but this way it won't burden much on FBReader's server, but the users at least can have all their books uploaded. And hopefully the iOS version also support PDF files.

  52. Josh Meier-avatar

The latest series of updates keeps me from using the file picker. When I tried to add a new book manually, the app could not open it. When I turned on library scanning, then it got added. But now with the latest update, I can't add new epubs to my library at all. Older versions of FB Reader can open the files that this newest version can't.

  53. Grant Patton-avatar

I have been using the Free version and then the Pro version for several years now. Most of the Pro features don't interest me such as reading Comics, but i feel good about supporting the developer. The Bookshelf view is pretty and similar to other eReaders, but for some reason I often can't use it in the way I'm used to and switch back to the Classic list. I very much enjoy the My Network Library supported by Google. I only wish I could upload books to the network from the app on my tablet.

  54. Jac Daniels-avatar

A must have app for ebook readers. It does a splendid job of creating and cataloguing an ebook library and easy for customising the 'look and feel' within the app. With the latest update something has changed though. The app is out of kilter with the lighting on any device I use and the lighting adjustment seems to be disabled. Also my iPad version auto syncs adding books from FBReader on GDrive. My Android ver doesn't/won't auto sync. I will give 5 stars if/when these can be resolved.

Played with FBReader and some ePubs for an hour, found it adequate, purchased the Premium and THEN I tried reading a PDF -> No Reflow. Without this, it's impossible to read a PDF book on a cellphone screen. Started looking again, found Moon. I think Moon is more polished. The Moon options are simpler and better laid out (although if you are looking to tweak eBooks layout, FBReader beats everything else.) Moon has more included fonts, better textures, better Night-Mode (you can cycle through 3 themes on Moon,) better bookcase screen, better "Where to touch" help screen (took me 30 minutes to discover you have to press the center of the screen for Options in FBReader.) FBReader's not bad at all, but I prefer Moon, and without PDF Reflow, FBReader is missing big. FBReader does have more links to eBook libraries; I think its network features are better than Moon but I haven't tried to access my Calibre library on either yet.

When I use it on my P20 Pro, several critical issues come to light: 1. The read aloud feature, which was what I bought this app for, places itself in the middle of the screen, so you can't follow along the read items at all. 2. When using Bluetooth on my car app displays nonsensical titles on the display 3. Once in a while the app would crash, leaving the lock screen play function useless. Pressing play, for example, does nothing. This is extremely frustrating thing when driving. More...

Worked great for a bit, then about 5 months ago it began crashing upon startup. Tried everything + contacting the team to no avail. I love the app but can't recommend it due to it not working and even though I paid, the lack of communication is disappointing. Google Pixel, I've tried everything across a couple versions of Android, same issue every time.

Used free version for a long time - brilliant, much better than Kindle. Free not inconvenient, but finally decided to upgrade to premium to reward the creators. It installed a DIFFERENT app, and now I have both free and premium installed. All my book info (laboriously input for maybe 1000 books, using the free app's EDIT function) is missing when launching premium version. Clearly, my edits are not stored in the book files but in the free app. Infeasible to re-edit, so how to copy info across??!

  59. Buddyboy278-avatar

Great til now..... please fix. Long time paid user. Very satisfied but you guys broke it. TTS unusable and can't access books on sd card ... and that's where my whole library lives. Please don't force me to a competitor ....I'm assuming it's just a glitch and will be patient.... BUT HURRY!!!... Lol! UPDATE: After recent update, TTS is back up and running and library on sd card is accessible again. "FBReader, back to my homepage you go." Well done .

Great app, simple to use and powerful. I love that it can be connected to third party directories. I love that it syncs with other devices via Google drive. I was perfectly happy with the free version and upgraded to the premium version just to support developers.

same problem as before. I'm going to need to complain to Samsung. this app should e a part of updates with samsung so this doesn't happen. plus after it starts reading then shuts off it will.not start again for a couple of days. Having issues after recent Samsung update. fb reader stops playing when the screen isn't on. Very irritating! please fix so its compatible.

I have been using free version for a long time, thought it was about time I paid for an app I use every day. one question to developers,is it possible to use premium version on a second device? There would be only one instance of app open at a time ie if I only had my mobile with me and not my tablet. Thanks D.

  63. Gryphon Myers-avatar

I thought this would be a keeper, until I realized that it does not handle authenticated OPDS servers correctly. There are two major bugs that make this app useless for that specific use case: 1) It will not cache credentials, so every single time you go to browse your OPDS, it asks for your password again. 2) It appears to not pass credentials when requesting images from your OPDS share, as book covers do not render at all when browsing. Unfortunately, these issues are deal breakers for my use case, hence the low review. If the developer fixes them, then I will modify my review to a 5.

Although I bought the premium version, I wouldn't recommend it for .pdf files. The background and text color cannot be changed, controls come up after 4-5-10 taps, zoom in and out cannot be made when the font-size is not the default, scroll works only on the same page. I have no clue how I can turn a page...

This hidden gem turns your smartphone into a robust e-reader. My only complaint is that dictionary integration was really counterintuitive. Other than that, this app parses any format into easily readable text. It even handles comic book files like CBZ. The paid version includes all the usual plugins the free version asks you to download for full functionality and it's a one time price. Unbeatable in my book.

An excellent app with every possible feature. At night, I read on a black screen with red text. No other app let me do that. However its features go way way beyond my personal quirks. One thing to note, and I think it's because of this TCL phone (but I'm not sure.) I used to open the settings menu by swiping down from the top of the screen. Now I open the settings menu by double-clicking on the right side of the screen.

Love this app as a backup (I usually read on a Kindle), and could imagine myself happily using it full time if I lost the Kindle. Two things stopping me give it 5 stars. 1) While I usually launch books from Calibre Companion, if I try to use my File Manger of choice, FX File Explorer, it refuses to open azw3 files with FBReader, saying FBReader does not support opening using a Content URI as required by Google since late 2018 - although it will launch other formats like mobi etc in FBReader, and other file managers I have will launch azw3s with it. Now, I don't know if the problem is FBReader or FX Explorer, but I have seen some updates to FBReader about fixing things so certain other formats can be launched in FBReader by file managers, so clearly there was a problem at FBReader's end with some formats, adn I emailed the support email address months ago about it and never got a reply. 2) This is very new. Just got an update saying a blue background had been added to icon on Android 8.1 or higher in the update. I have Android 8.0, but the icon background promptly turned blue and it looks HIDEOUS on my screen. Please provide option to pick the old icon with the old background.

updated review 08162019: I lower my review score to 3 from 5 due to recent negative experience with the audible portion of the app. No integrated audible launcher in app, independent TTS app failed to appear on fb menu or will not launch at all after installing fb pushed updates, feature came back randomly for unknown reason. Original review: 5 star, great reader! stable and neat interfaces! have used the free app for more than 5 years, I feel I owe the developer team not to buy the pro version!

In FBReader Premium only "epub" format is supported by TTS. Other formats (pdf, djvu) end up with "Api error.". WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX IT? There are free apps that convert to txt and use decent Text To Speech engine. [Addon as of 09.23.2019] There apps that work with all formats for FREE with user friendly interface. I would like you to reimburse in full to all who purchased this the most ungainly app without support.

Whilst enjoying the free version, totally dislike the premium one, as I cannot see any upgrade. I was expecting I will be able to sort the books by creating shelves: no such thing, and the "tags sorting" option, available in the free version, is totally absent here for some reason.

Putting aside the argument of whether the added benefits of the premium version over the free version, the free version alone has been well worth $6 to me over the years. So, thank you for the years of a great free product, I'll gladly pay $6 for that and thank you further for the premium features.

Just perfect reader. It has all the features one would require in book reading on a device. I just wish customisation of fonts, size etc can be done with main text of the book visible in background - may be faded. That will lessen the exercise. But no complaints so far.

Switched from this app to Moon reader pro because of much better TTS support there. I know TTS plugin is not developed by you guys, but for me this is a must-have-right functionality and an app experience. Maybe you might want to put TTS support inside the app. On the other side, I love your app's eco system (synchronization, online library, OPDS catalogue support)

Being a premium subscriber to this app, it's very disappointing to me that it hardly supports the PDF reading. As I'm finding it difficulty to search through the PDF of size 85mb. It hardly gives a response.😒 The app just gets stuck at searching through the PDFs for a word searched across the PDF. At this point, neither can I go back nor stop the searching which forces me to COME LOSE THE APP ☹️

I would rate this app a 5 star if only they give back the old tts plugin. The integrated one in the premium app is inferior and clunky in comparison. You can no longer edit pronunciation on certain words which makes for a cringe fest when dealing with foreign words. Give back or modify the voice settings, you had them before.

It renders Lonely Planet epubs very poorly; strange graphics cover the text. File management is terrible and impossible to figure out! If you save to Downloads folder and then open in FBReader, it makes a duplicate cryptically named file. As far as I know, it is impossible to copy annotations and bookmarks to new phone.

Excellent app with the option lots of customisations to make the reading experience better and less/ no strain on the eyes. Built-in dictionary is simply superb. The Text-to-speech plugin is an added advantage when plowing through complex writing/ subject.

There isn't a better ebook reader app out there, this one beats them all. Used it for a few years on the free version, figured it was about time to pay for the premium one. I highly recommend it, especially if you have a large collection of ebook files that you want organized.

I was using the free version before, wanted to buy the premium for some time, to support this great app! But hesitated for fearing migration of books from free version to premium version would cause trouble, turned out it went smoothly without a glitch. Glad I did it, only regret was not sooner!

Love this app, but v3.0.16 can't display CBR books! No problem with CBZ format. Please fix! UPDATE: Uninstalled Premium, reinstalled Free v3.0.16 + CB plugin and once again I can read CBRs. Bumping up another star. UPDATE 2: Uninstalled Free, reinstalled Premium, can still read CBRs. Chalk my problem up to a solvable library glitch.

Works OK, doesn't read pdf files best as I can tell, which is a hassle, been using it for awhile now. Half the time the text to speech bit won't actually start reading. Went down to a single star, because it shows some epub and pdf files as blank, but files open in other programs, and scan as undamaged.

For months newer epub sometimes won't load even when said epub can be opened using other reader app. Even epub released by the same publisher won't guarantee that it will load at all. It's cheap so i guess you get what you pay, but i never thought that it will be worse than a free reader apps.

BAD APP NO COOKIES FOR YOU This used to be The Best! But now it's junk. What to do???? I tried many other book readers and FBReader was the only one that fitted all my needs .. I do all my reading on an Android phone .. so I bought (paid for) Premium FBReader because it was so good; the free version was just as good, but I wanted to show appreciation. BUT since some recent change many of my books cannot be opened. I'm so sad and annoyed! What to do? I emailed support and got zero response. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted all my books from the library then replaced them, rescanned and rescanned in FBReader, but only a handful will open, the rest are totally ignored/invisible even though another book reader opens them fine, and they're visible in Windows Explorer when I browse the device. SO SO SAD AND DISAPPOINTED

This is actually fantastic. I have it set as the default app for PDF files on my device. But... it has one seriously fatal flaw and is the reason it gets 1 star. It CANNOT OPEN PASSWORD PROTECTED PDFS. So, if it is set as the default (to avoid the select the app you want to use to open the PDF file) every time you open a file, you have to clear the default app settings every time you need to select another app to open the password protected PDF file which is a huge PITA.
