A free and open source Jabber/XMPP client for Android. Easy to use, reliable, battery friendly. With built-in support for images, group chats and e2e encryption.

Design principles
• Be as beautiful and easy to use as possible without sacrificing security or privacy
• Rely on existing, well established protocols
• Do not require a Google Account or specifically Google Cloud Messaging (GCM)
• Require as little permissions as possible

Features
• End-to-end encryption with either OMEMO or OpenPGP
• Sending and receiving images
• Intuitive UI that follows Android Design guidelines
• Pictures / Avatars for your Contacts
• Syncs with desktop client
• Conferences (with support for bookmarks)
• Address book integration
• Multiple Accounts / unified inbox
• Very low impact on battery life

Conversations makes it very easy to create an account on the conversations.im server. Using that server comes with an annual fee of 8 Euro after a 6 month trial period. However Conversations will work with any other XMPP server as well. A lot of XMPP servers are run by volunteers and are free of charge.

XMPP Features
Conversations works with every XMPP server out there. However XMPP is an extensible protocol. These extensions are standardized as well in so called XEP’s. Conversations supports a couple of those to make the overall user experience better. There is a chance that your current XMPP server does not support these extensions. Therefore to get the most out of Conversations you should consider either switching to an
XMPP server that does or - even better - run your own XMPP server for you and your friends.
These XEPs are - as of now:

• XEP-0065: SOCKS5 Bytestreams (or mod_proxy65). Will be used to transfer files if both parties are behind a firewall (NAT).
• XEP-0163: Personal Eventing Protocol for avatars
• XEP-0191: Blocking command lets you blacklist spammers or block contacts without removing them from your roster.
• XEP-0198: Stream Management allows XMPP to survive small network outages and changes of the underlying TCP connection.
• XEP-0280: Message Carbons which automatically syncs the messages you send to your desktop client and thus allows you to switch seamlessly from your mobile client to your desktop client and back within one conversation.
• XEP-0237: Roster Versioning mainly to save bandwidth on poor mobile connections
• XEP-0313: Message Archive Management synchronize message history with the server. Catch up with messages that were sent while Conversations was offline.
• XEP-0352: Client State Indication lets the server know whether or not Conversations is in the background. Allows the server to save bandwidth by withholding unimportant packages.
• XEP-0363: HTTP File Upload allows you to share files in conferences and with offline contacts. Requires an additional component on your server.

App ChangeLog

Reviews From google play store

Has been working well for many months, reliable message delivery, read notification, file transfer, unobstrusive, functional interface. Once set up with a reliable XMPP server this app is very good replacement for Our average centralised surveillance messenger (WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal etc) if you don't need (video)call functionality.

I've been testing several XMPP client for my private ejabberd server (19.05), conversation is the one that worked straight after installation. Love OMEMO and File upload integration. Unless I mistaken it's just missing a view of the shared roster. Great job 👏

App is pretty good and open source, which is awesome. It has some space for improvement, but the open encryption protocol, custom servers and open source implementation make this app the choice, if you care about privacy.

For day to day family conversation the mainstream apps are a better option. But for techies and privacy lovers this might be the next best thing.

Best XMPP (Jabber) app on Android.

Its a good app to use, but I can't restore from backup, just shows a blank dialog everytime I try, pretty much breaking the whole app for me. hey thanks for the reply sorry about that. the restore works now! everything else about the app is great

awesomeness.has omemo and openpgp as encrryption options as well as tor connection. this vs signal? conversation app wins the day immo. and if you host your own ejabber server....all the data is your

Awesome chat application! Please, can you add a delete for everyone message feature?

Best XMPP client on Android.

This is definitely the best XMPP chat client available for Android. That being said I would like the ability to always return to start conversations/contacts panel via a settings option instead of always being forced into that panel after starting any convo. The ability to swipe between the convos/start convos panel would also be a plus. To be honest I find the convo list panel a lil redundant because you can return to the actual conversation via the contact panel which is exactly what I want to be able to do.

So, I could have saved myself money by using the free Legacy app version of this app, which still supports the ever popular and secure Off The Record, rather than pay for an upgrade with reduced features. Fantastic. 🙄 Give users the option to use the app how they see fit, especially when it's down to our security, instead of making decisions for them and crippling usability.

Not so much the app as the developers that are always creating various ways of bringing communications together that enhance the understandings between people so that they can have healthy discussions on a more professional level, this in turn creates a holistic communications base on all levels for one and for all concerned.

This client looks very nice. It does however advertise OpenPGP support which it technically has. Problem is that it doesn't work well and the developer refuses to fix it since he doesn't use that feature. The support muc is one of the most toxic places I have seen lately which of course makes communication there less than enjoyable. To sum up: I got this app for free and still want my money back.

the app is excellent as far as encryption is concerned however i bought the app and free means free and I'm not paying any subscription costs because it clearly states free

Hey app is good but this update is only ok. You took the volume control away on the notification sound. What were you thinking? Not a good idea please finish the update returning the notification sound and then send it out again please. That would be helpful.

All is great, but there is no way to set the ringtone for notifications, clicking on the notification settings just takes you to the android notification options for the app, which has no option for defining ringtone. this makes it largely unusable for me (or anyone).

This is a very good XMPP client for Android. The big hurdle is figuring out which XMPP server to go with, as not all are created and operated equally. Not the dev's fault though. The dev is very prompt about replying to email as well. I'm happy with the app so far.

Be warned: Apparently, this app will not work with servers that require SSL/TLS. Strange that it did work for a few days, and then either the app updated or the server changed settings, and I am getting "TLS Negotiation Failed" constantly.

How messaging should be! Text exchange and none of the added nonsense that other apps add that results in slowness and other drawbacks. Not to mention tracking and data mining. Minimalist and perfect.

Wonderful app. Very well designed UI. I wish there was more coverage of XMPP protocols though. Especially pubsub. Higly recommend for anyone whonis looking for a securr opensource IM application.

Pretty good. I did have trouble with not regaining connections on reboot, but I found forcing it to run in the foreground in advanced options seemed to fix that.

Fantastic UI. Has been great to work with. Really well-featured and has great docs about standards, etc. Highly recommend

I use a custom server ( open fire ) provider that support multiuser chat history ( tested with another client ), but this client doesn't load it

Brilliant client, works flawlessly with my ejabberd server, no trouble at all to set up. Really can't fault it

One of the most beautiful, simple chat clients available on any platform.

Extremely reliable, smooth, robust and battery efficient. Easily the best xmpp client ever, and everybody knows that.

Feels good to use a federated chat service that's this polished. Thank you!

Would rate higher if it would show contacts as being on or offline. Seems pretty basic and other clients do it.

Fantastic app, makes XMPP great on Android!

Wow nice but I do have some doubt. is this really end to end encrypted? no tracking since end to end?

Just use WhatsApp or Kik Messenger. Edit: How do you not know about your competition? I thought you made this app specifically to compete with them! Very ameatur.

does not support tue most widly used encrypted messages

I would use BOSH if it had.

Tls negotiation failed after each reconnect.

The best xmpp client for android!

Best thing I ever used

best messaging app in my opinion

why does it not support OTR anymore? I would like to use the 2.x series but still need OTR support.

it's the best xmpp client

wow great job 👏👍

Best jabber client.

don't register my account

Great app. The best XMPP client there is. Besides that it's 1 of the best messengers overall.

Die Chat-App ist super (intuitiv, macht was sie soll) und wird außerdem auch auf freie-messenger.de empfohlen.

Works great with xmpp.is :)

Perfect!

Greate.

This is a fantastic app that works perfectly with my prosody server! Keep up the great work!

Works very nicely and efficiently, can actually transfer files. No audio/video chat.

Unable to connect. "Security error" (fixed). Hoping for a backup chat log function

delete Operations

hard

usefull apps

Great but 1) Stop using the in built camera as it places photos in unencrypted space on the phone. Do what Signal and WhatsApp do and add an in built camera for better isolation of media. 2) Add fingerprint unlock like Telegram and Signal

Latest versions make it impossible not to have a persistent notification. Deal breaker for me.

Hello dear developers. I have few questions about the size of the app. Why the previous update 2.3.3 was around 2-3 MB and this update 2.3.4 over 7 MB? There are no new featutes just a small fix. My android version is the same 8.0. I am curious to know why is that difference? Also when I compile myself the app(free compat debug) with Android Studio on Windows 8, the size of the app is almost three times bigger, about 17 MB. Thank you for the best xmpp app on the market!

TX dev

Please please please fix this issue, it's so annoying I sometimes forbid notifications for the app, only to find two days later that I missed some interesting messages.

Great app! Just 2 things are missing: 1. Search in conversation 2. Single messages selection and removal&forward

The best I've used so far on Android. I've been using the F-Droid version for about a year and being so happy with it, just purchased the Playstore version.

I just payed for the app, why extra charges??? There is a yearly fee which I want aware of BEFORE paying for the app.

It's a great app to text with!

Awesome

Please add repeated notifications for unread messages feauture.

Don't even waste your time with other xmpp apps. Seriously.

Really nice app which i've been using for some time now. Stability is excellent and i'd recomnend it.

When I purchased Conversations, it still supported OTR. It was pretty much a powerhouse XMPP client compared to other offerings. Sad to say it's not getting much use as OMEMO adoption isn't moving very quickly and OTR support was dropped.

I'd really love to see a feature that allows me more control over when notifications show. For example tie it to a location or wifi network. That way I could set it to only notify for that server when I am at home.

The client itself is good, however it doesn't follow Google Material Design guidelines and looks like a black sheep among other apps. Still lacks some small features like shared media list, search filters, etc.

Privacy is not a political issue. Please return OTR capabilities till omemo is universally accepted.

Best Android app for XMPP.

same prbl have on 2.1.2 on outgoing messages, delivery failed you need otr encryption ? using omemo always, so I can't send messages now, can you help me ?

Version 2.1.2 is giving delivery failed messages on outgoing messages

Great app. Love it!

Dafuq? Where is OTR gone?

Definitely a usable Jabber client. It auto-saving my xmpp account's password without an option of needing to re-enter on start or disconnect or whatever is a little too much for me, though.

Changed from 1 star to 5 star. Had an issue, was contacted right away and given a patch via email in less than a hour. Great support.

After using Conversations for more than two years gladly (apart from a few minor UX mistakes and questionable decisions) it now undergoes harsh changes with version 2.0. OMEMO is now enabled by default for _all_ new chats. This, while beeing a good way onboarding, has to be turned off inconviniently for every single chat manually if the user does not want it to be shoved down the throat for whatever reason. This may have easily been an option in "expert settings". Further, OTR support was removed without any public comment, explanation and perceptible rationale. While manual resource naming (as sensible common practice since the inception of Jabber) has _never_ been there, Conversations at least gave the user the ability to choose from a set of predefined and distinguishable resource presets. This, while not ideal, was sufficient. Now, this option has also been cut down without any rationale. These, amongst other changes in earlier versions, e.g. the perky "conversations.im" commercial nagging when adding your Jabber account, reveals the dark path that lies ahead to the walled garden of other mobile messenger failures. One star until sanity is restored.

OTR gone!

Absolutely loved this app until OTR got removed in the latest update. A heads up would have been nice as I now have error messages instead of important messages. It's very difficult to convince others to change their encryption standard just because the mobile software I use is now limited.

This is a great app! Without it I wouldn't have been able to convince my non-techie family to use our private messaging server. User experience is intuitive and close enough to whatsapp that they knew what to do immediately.

Seems to work pretty well with my company's server. Some nits: the new acct dialog should have the option for advanced settings, rather than having to know there's a setting to turn on. OMEMO should be an acct-based preference, because sending a msg just hangs if the server doesn't support it. Also, is there a way to see who enters and leaves a conference like pidgin does?

The last update removed the Otr option This is so bad. I really dont understand why such action when its so important.

After update silently stopped sending or receiving OMEMO messages.

Removed otr support without warning. Lame.

Please, add fingerprint lock to this app or password lock. Get back otr encryption, everybody using it!

Took away OTR.

The most security chatting application

Jabber is the best option for secure routine instant messaging (for special privacy needs consider Briar) and Conversations is the best Android option for secure Jabber.

Very simple and feature less chat app. Which is good and at the same time not. Miss a battery friendly AMOLED theme. OTR was a good fallback option to chat with other apps.

The only client that works with my company's ancient XMPP system.

I tried this as xabber disconnects often when exiting or entering wifi. I had to contact the writer as my server was not connecting. A 500 Bind failure was reported. It turned out to be another problem related to encryption being optional on my end. They identified it quickly. Works like a charm now. Very nice layout.

What functionality is there is well done, but author has some peculiar stances on things (presence, discovery, etc.) that make it unsuitable for my uses.

Best I have used so far. Great support from developer.

The rating is only relevant to the app purchase. I thought it's free, but it's not! My brother in Turkey can't install it unless he purchase it.

Best XMPP client ever used. I tried every client in the market, except for paid apps. This by far the one that stole my heart. I use it everyday with my family running on my server. And it is running flawlessly. Side note: now that ejabberd supports sip calling, why not make the app uses the phone calling option based on mod_sip and let us worry about configuring turn/stun configuration. It would really help us a lot

It needs lot work and lot need improve support. It critically need for this, so dont have to download too many chat app. I dont know why too many app become a joke.

Cannot log into account, fails with "Bind Failure" message. The same xmpp account details work on xabber and astrochat, but fail on Conversations. Asking for refund.

An excellent secure messaging app! Users can adjust or change the type of encryption for each chat; even during a conversation. Also has a dark/black theme. Works well!

Jabber texting (xmpp) is THE replacement for legacy texting (that outdated tech enslaving you to a single device with the obscene pricing). Ditch SMS!
