• Multiple Accounts unified inbox
• Very low impact on battery life

Conversations makes it very easy to create an account on the server. Using that server comes with an annual fee of 8 Euro after a 6 month trial period. However Conversations will work with any other XMPP server as well. A lot of XMPP servers are run by volunteers and are free of charge.

XMPP Features
Conversations works with every XMPP server out there. However XMPP is an extensible protocol. These extensions are standardized as well in so called XEP’s. Conversations supports a couple of those to make the overall user experience better. There is a chance that your current XMPP server does not support these extensions. Therefore to get the most out of Conversations you should consider either switching to an
XMPP server that does or - even better - run your own XMPP server for you and your friends.
These XEPs are - as of now:

• XEP-0065: SOCKS5 Bytestreams (or mod_proxy65). Will be used to transfer files if both parties are behind a firewall (NAT).
• XEP-0163: Personal Eventing Protocol for avatars
• XEP-0191: Blocking command lets you blacklist spammers or block contacts without removing them from your roster.
• XEP-0198: Stream Management allows XMPP to survive small network outages and changes of the underlying TCP connection.
• XEP-0280: Message Carbons which automatically syncs the messages you send to your desktop client and thus allows you to switch seamlessly from your mobile client to your desktop client and back within one conversation.
• XEP-0237: Roster Versioning mainly to save bandwidth on poor mobile connections
• XEP-0313: Message Archive Management synchronize message history with the server. Catch up with messages that were sent while Conversations was offline.
• XEP-0352: Client State Indication lets the server know whether or not Conversations is in the background. Allows the server to save bandwidth by withholding unimportant packages.
• XEP-0363: HTTP File Upload allows you to share files in conferences and with offline contacts. Requires an additional component on your server.

App ChangeLog

  • · Fixed notifications not showing up under certain conditions

requires following permissions on your android device.

approximate location (network-based)
Allows the app to get your approximate location. This location is derived by location services using network location sources such as cell towers and Wi-Fi. These location services must be turned on and available to your device for the app to use them. Apps may use this to determine approximately where you are.

precise location (GPS and network-based)
Allows the app to get your precise location using the Global Positioning System (GPS) or network location sources such as cell towers and Wi-Fi. These location services must be turned on and available to your device for the app to use them. Apps may use this to determine where you are, and may consume additional battery power.

view network connections
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.

view Wi-Fi connections
Allows the app to view information about Wi-Fi networking, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and name of connected Wi-Fi devices.

change your audio settings
Allows the app to modify global audio settings such as volume and which speaker is used for output.

read your contacts
Allows the app to read data about your contacts stored on your phone, including the frequency with which you've called, emailed, or communicated in other ways with specific individuals. This permission allows apps to save your contact data, and malicious apps may share contact data without your knowledge.

read the contents of your SD card
Allows the app to read the contents of your SD card.

read your own contact card
Allows the app to read personal profile information stored on your device, such as your name and contact information. This means the app can identify you and may send your profile information to others.

The app is great, first app that I buy ever (been using Android devices for 10 yrs.)! It does everything I need. Unfortunately, there are no notifications for messages in group chats (MUC). Normal notifications work fine. Please, fix notifications for group chats! EDIT: I have entered the group --> menu (three dots) --> Channel details --> Notify on all messages. Now it works 👍 thanks! (changed to 5 stats now 😃)

I already compared with my colleagues which using same app

Just consistantly fails saying no connection yet it says I'm connected

  16. A Google user-avatar

So, I could have saved myself money by using the free Legacy app version of this app, which still supports the ever popular and secure Off The Record, rather than pay for an upgrade with reduced features. Fantastic. 🙄 Give users the option to use the app how they see fit, especially when it's down to our security, instead of making decisions for them and crippling usability.

  17. Geofferey Eakins-avatar

    Geofferey Eakins

This is definitely the best XMPP chat client available for Android. That being said I would like the ability to always return to start conversations/contacts panel via a settings option instead of always being forced into that panel after starting any convo. The ability to swipe between the convos/start convos panel would also be a plus. To be honest I find the convo list panel a lil redundant because you can return to the actual conversation via the contact panel which is exactly what I want to be able to do.

  18. Anthony Browne-avatar

Not so much the app as the developers that are always creating various ways of bringing communications together that enhance the understandings between people so that they can have healthy discussions on a more professional level, this in turn creates a holistic communications base on all levels for one and for all concerned.

  19. T.B. Cheng-avatar

Has been working well for many months, reliable message delivery, read notification, file transfer, unobstrusive, functional interface. Once set up with a reliable XMPP server this app is very good replacement for Our average centralised surveillance messenger (WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal etc) if you don't need (video)call functionality.

  20. Markus Larsson-avatar

This client looks very nice. It does however advertise OpenPGP support which it technically has. Problem is that it doesn't work well and the developer refuses to fix it since he doesn't use that feature. The support muc is one of the most toxic places I have seen lately which of course makes communication there less than enjoyable. To sum up: I got this app for free and still want my money back.

  21. Chad Walker-avatar

This is a very good XMPP client for Android. The big hurdle is figuring out which XMPP server to go with, as not all are created and operated equally. Not the dev's fault though. The dev is very prompt about replying to email as well. I'm happy with the app so far.

  22. Aleksandar Prokopec-avatar

    Aleksandar Prokopec

App is pretty good and open source, which is awesome. It has some space for improvement, but the open encryption protocol, custom servers and open source implementation make this app the choice, if you care about privacy.

  23. Dan. R.-avatar

Its a good app to use, but I can't restore from backup, just shows a blank dialog everytime I try, pretty much breaking the whole app for me. hey thanks for the reply sorry about that. the restore works now! everything else about the app is great

  24. Laurent D-avatar

I've been testing several XMPP client for my private ejabberd server (19.05), conversation is the one that worked straight after installation. Love OMEMO and File upload integration. Unless I mistaken it's just missing a view of the shared roster. Great job 👏

  25. Евгений Белоусов-avatar

    Евгений Белоусов

Be warned: Apparently, this app will not work with servers that require SSL/TLS. Strange that it did work for a few days, and then either the app updated or the server changed settings, and I am getting "TLS Negotiation Failed" constantly.

  26. Isogenn Crux-avatar

All is great, but there is no way to set the ringtone for notifications, clicking on the notification settings just takes you to the android notification options for the app, which has no option for defining ringtone. this makes it largely unusable for me (or anyone).

  27. pino phyta-avatar

How messaging should be! Text exchange and none of the added nonsense that other apps add that results in slowness and other drawbacks. Not to mention tracking and data mining. Minimalist and perfect.

  28. workrock in-avatar

Wonderful app. Very well designed UI. I wish there was more coverage of XMPP protocols though. Especially pubsub. Higly recommend for anyone whonis looking for a securr opensource IM application.

  29. Brian Vaughan-avatar

Pretty good. I did have trouble with not regaining connections on reboot, but I found forcing it to run in the foreground in advanced options seemed to fix that.

  30. A Google user-avatar

Fantastic UI. Has been great to work with. Really well-featured and has great docs about standards, etc. Highly recommend

  31. Ollie L-avatar

Brilliant client, works flawlessly with my ejabberd server, no trouble at all to set up. Really can't fault it

  32. Beppe Zauli-avatar

I use a custom server ( open fire ) provider that support multiuser chat history ( tested with another client ), but this client doesn't load it

  38. Jasper Timmer-avatar

For day to day family conversation the mainstream apps are a better option. But for techies and privacy lovers this might be the next best thing.

  39. Casey Craig-avatar

    Nicely done, it works well.

  40. Coty Spraggs-avatar

Would rate higher if it would show contacts as being on or offline. Seems pretty basic and other clients do it.

  49. Sergey Briskin-avatar

The best xmpp client for android!

  50. Devin Prince-avatar

OTR IS NOT SECURE ANYMORE, FOLKS! USE OMEMO INSTEAD!!!!! OTR was busted several years ago alongside the key-type that it requires, SHA-1, which is now also insecure. Please stop saying you need OTR and switch to something better, like PGP or OMEMO. Your messages WILL be decrypted if you use OTR. Daniel does amazing work as always, and continues to add excellent features to this app.

  51. Firman D.-avatar

Feels like home :)) Thanks. Keep up great work

Great but 1) Stop using the in built camera as it places photos in unencrypted space on the phone. Do what Signal and WhatsApp do and add an in built camera for better isolation of media. 2) Add fingerprint unlock like Telegram and Signal

  73. Andrew Ness-avatar

Latest versions make it impossible not to have a persistent notification. Deal breaker for me.

  74. Lalyo Rastev-avatar

Hello dear developers. I have few questions about the size of the app. Why the previous update 2.3.3 was around 2-3 MB and this update 2.3.4 over 7 MB? There are no new featutes just a small fix. My android version is the same 8.0. I am curious to know why is that difference? Also when I compile myself the app(free compat debug) with Android Studio on Windows 8, the size of the app is almost three times bigger, about 17 MB. Thank you for the best xmpp app on the market!

The best I've used so far on Android. I've been using the F-Droid version for about a year and being so happy with it, just purchased the Playstore version.

  83. Peter Garner-avatar

Really nice app which i've been using for some time now. Stability is excellent and i'd recomnend it.

  84. Red Legion-avatar

When I purchased Conversations, it still supported OTR. It was pretty much a powerhouse XMPP client compared to other offerings. Sad to say it's not getting much use as OMEMO adoption isn't moving very quickly and OTR support was dropped.

  85. Christopher Kumar-avatar

    Christopher Kumar

I'd really love to see a feature that allows me more control over when notifications show. For example tie it to a location or wifi network. That way I could set it to only notify for that server when I am at home.

  86. A Google user-avatar

The client itself is good, however it doesn't follow Google Material Design guidelines and looks like a black sheep among other apps. Still lacks some small features like shared media list, search filters, etc.

  87. Screenio-avatar

Privacy is not a political issue. Please return OTR capabilities till omemo is universally accepted.

  88. Evan Prodromou-avatar

    Best Android app for XMPP.

  89. ropke ropke-avatar

same prbl have on 2.1.2 on outgoing messages, delivery failed you need otr encryption ? using omemo always, so I can't send messages now, can you help me ?

  90. Rajil Saraswat-avatar

Version 2.1.2 is giving delivery failed messages on outgoing messages

  91. Minati Das-avatar

    Great app. Love it!

  92. Tom Funken-avatar

    Dafuq? Where is OTR gone?

  93. Phat Toni-avatar

Definitely a usable Jabber client. It auto-saving my xmpp account's password without an option of needing to re-enter on start or disconnect or whatever is a little too much for me, though.

  94. Scott Maun-avatar

Changed from 1 star to 5 star. Had an issue, was contacted right away and given a patch via email in less than a hour. Great support.

  95. Micha LaQua-avatar

After using Conversations for more than two years gladly (apart from a few minor UX mistakes and questionable decisions) it now undergoes harsh changes with version 2.0. OMEMO is now enabled by default for _all_ new chats. This, while beeing a good way onboarding, has to be turned off inconviniently for every single chat manually if the user does not want it to be shoved down the throat for whatever reason. This may have easily been an option in "expert settings". Further, OTR support was removed without any public comment, explanation and perceptible rationale. While manual resource naming (as sensible common practice since the inception of Jabber) has _never_ been there, Conversations at least gave the user the ability to choose from a set of predefined and distinguishable resource presets. This, while not ideal, was sufficient. Now, this option has also been cut down without any rationale. These, amongst other changes in earlier versions, e.g. the perky "" commercial nagging when adding your Jabber account, reveals the dark path that lies ahead to the walled garden of other mobile messenger failures. One star until sanity is restored.

  96. Cp Discus-avatar

    OTR gone!

  97. Jess Ambrose-avatar

Absolutely loved this app until OTR got removed in the latest update. A heads up would have been nice as I now have error messages instead of important messages. It's very difficult to convince others to change their encryption standard just because the mobile software I use is now limited.

  98. Charles LaBrec-avatar

Seems to work pretty well with my company's server. Some nits: the new acct dialog should have the option for advanced settings, rather than having to know there's a setting to turn on. OMEMO should be an acct-based preference, because sending a msg just hangs if the server doesn't support it. Also, is there a way to see who enters and leaves a conference like pidgin does?

  99. Wilf Nicoll-avatar

This is a great app! Without it I wouldn't have been able to convince my non-techie family to use our private messaging server. User experience is intuitive and close enough to whatsapp that they knew what to do immediately.

The last update removed the Otr option This is so bad. I really dont understand why such action when its so important.
