Reviews From google play store

looks like last update was 2012! well, it was a great app back in the day.

stopped working after upgrading to Android 9.0, please add support.

I was great while it lasted, long deduct.

update not available

Not working, decommissioned.

no update for almost 2 years drops this app in the abandonware bin, it does work, but system changes in the OS may not work well for new OS versions.. as we have already had several OS updates since the last time this app was updated.. I'd hold off on buying any voices for a while. Google's native voice output app has come a long way and sounds better when you download the expanded packs..

Plus you can get different languages. I currently have U.S. Grace and both U.K. voices (female and male) and love listening to them all. I have them setup as the default voices to hear when my tablet outputs any voice. Currently that is mostly either Moon Reader+ reading my ebooks to me as I drive, or the voices also are used for Google Navigation. Definitely give it a go and try it all out. You'll be glad you did.

I have purchased this TTS engine and several of the voices. I have been most pleased with the quality and clarity of the voices. I use them not only on my android, but in several desktop computer applications, and the UK English male voice is a wonderful substitute for the built-in one that comes with "Evan" the personal assistant. I would be even happier if the SVOX engine integrated with more applications.

I understand the comments about cost now. 04/19/2014. I installed the app to try it to see if it will read kindle books for my Dad who is blind. After installation I installed several trial voices and EVERYONE of them said that the trial period has expired. Hmmm, they expired before I even installed them. Reminds me of Dell computer that did the same thing to me on a NEW computer purchase which they refused to warrant because they said the warranty expired a month before I purchased it. Cost is not the prob

PLEASE update it to work properly with ICS. Works on Navigation and not much else. Used to work on GB apps so I guess its a matter of you updating SVOX. Seems like its been going on since ICS has come out that there are a lot of people contacting you to get it fixed. As for as I can tell from what I have seen there is no response. I suggest that people avoid paying for this until its been updated past 2011.

This app worked just fine with Kit Kat and versions of Android prior to Kit Kat but it appears that the app is no longer being supported by it's developers since there has not been any new development on it since 2012. Don't believe the Play Store if you are being told that this app is compatible with all of your devices. The app itself may run but none of the voices for the app will work if you are running Lollipop.

Dear developers, in 99% of cases I'd like to use the pronunciation correction option to correct the accentuation of a word. I don't see a simple easy way to do so. Please let me know if there is such an option, or provide one. In that case I'll buy. Without it russian pronunciation is sometimes really annoying. Thanks in advance.

The app only reads what you copy and paste into a box, that's impractical under Android. The voice built-in Android 4 sounds less robotic than the voices they make you pay for. Still looking for an app that does text to speech in an elegant and user friendly fashion.

I have been constantly looking to get an English UK male voice and stumbled across this app. From what I have experienced and read, as of now nothing will work on updated Galaxy S4 in the US other then then stock crap voice. Seems only option I have is the crappy Google Now janky female for now so pointless to spend money on this?

I love the Victoria voice and have been using it through the last 3 years of google maps navigation….but now it doesn't work with the latest update on the samasung s4 mini. PLEASE FIX! I really dislike the american voice default and use Victoria all the time! Please advise!

I use this app to read Nook books which utilizes the "em dash" (long dash) and svox pronounces it "hyphen". If the book author users them often it can drive me crazy. Is there a way to edit the "em dash"? My keyboard supports it but it doesn't show up in the edit dictionary.

I loved Grace, and it worked until I changed from a SGS3 to a LG G5. SHe went silent and no amount of prodding seems to get the developer's attention. Called Nuance in MA and transferred to CA and talked rep that said we don't support that product anymore. So I guess that it'll be uninstalled now, and added to the abandoned software bin. Thanks Nuance.

Samsung has some kind of agreement with them, because they are offering their Samsung TTS HD voices for free in the Samsung app market, which are a much more improved version than the ones I've bought 2 years ago and now are useless. ****!

Using a SG5 Active now. I've bin using this for at least 2 years, on 3 different phones, and never had any problems, love it, much smoother then google voice. I'm leaving my rating at 2 stars till I can get an explanation. Hoping you can fix this.

Broken on Android 6.x (Marshmallow). I just noticed it has NOT BEEN UPDATED IN FOUR YEARS! No wonder it is broken. Google should change policy of abandoned paid apps to free after 1.5 years abandoned or something. This is unacceptable. However, prior to Marshmallow release, worked great on all my devices. NO UPDATES IN FOUR YEARS THOUGH!!! So no improvements in engine, database, voice processing, etc. NOTHING!

I would have given it 4 or even 5 stars if it would install again on my tablet. Every time I try to install the voice data it tells me to make sure there is internet connection! It used to work very nicely and the voice data (Grace, purchased) used to work very well. Please fix the error or provide the apk as a download instead of connecting to your server to download. Seems that your server might have deleted the files somehow.

BEWARE - DON'T PAY FOR VOICES This used to be an excellent app but there has been no sign of development since 2012. It no longer works with newer versions of Android. ADDED: The developer does not reply to emails.

The Victoria voice is the best synthetic voice available at the moment. I'm only giving 4 stars because SVOX is always in my recent apps list, cluttering it up, for no apparent reason. I'm guessing DRM but as a paying customer I find it irritating.

PROBLEM FIXED — I reinstalled my Android OS and went on to reinstall Svox and the Victoria voice a purchased. The app installs fine, the voice also. But when i try to launch the voice app in order for it to download the necessary files it hungs on... Checking app license. Please wait... I even installed a trial voice, but i have the same issue. The problem us on my HTC Evo 3D (GSM) phone.

If you're on android 6.0.0 or greater this works but you have to change a default setting. Under "Language and Input" look for TTS options, then under Svox options unchecked "Use Optimized Engine". You might have to drill down in advanced settings. I had never tried this setting in Lollipop perhaps it works there too. I still believe this is the best TTS option for android. The ability to customize pronunciation set it up above all others. Just don't expect support, I believe this app is abandoned.

Used this for years, (the grace voice) but it won't install the voice data on my new phone (xperia xa)... I've checked the permissions and went hunting through the the file system to make sure it wasn't locked... I don't know what the problem is.

I like it, BUT you all REALLY need to fix the problem with the voice reader reading dashes in the text. If real live people don't read dashes in the text than neither should voice reader. If you can than I would give it 5 stars.

I use Svox with Norwegian speech on my Samsung Note 2, latest android version. Svox creates bugs every minute. Very annoying. When the bug problems are removed, I will give Svox 5 stars, now it is almost useless!!

Doesn't install any of the voices I've purchased in our moto g4 phones. Gives an error about app licenses not being recognized. Developer has not responded to our emails. Hoping this will get fixed since there's nothing better out there.

Still not quite there. I wish there were some options. One, for example, would be the ability to change some punctuation. A "-" is said as "hyphen" and this makes for difficult listening. It throws you off what is being listened to. If you could add an option where fir example a "-" (hyphen) is not spoken, but is a pause ot would help. After all, svox does not say "comma" when it comes to a ",".

After upgrading to ICS, the voices I purchased and successfully used have disappeared. I keep reloading them (luckily, I do not get charged again) but they keep disappearing after reboot. I emailed the developer - silence. I want this fixed or get my money back.

When using my phone I needed to change the text to speech because I rooted it. One problem is when using my phone and I go to close the apps on my s4 I will sometimes see it hanging out with the other apps. Weird and not a big or important problem just sometimes annoying to me. It works good because Google's and Samsung default all failed upon rooting.

Voices still sound robotic/synthisized. Compared to the other voice apps this sounds terrible. Voices pitchs are off and sound scratchy, and when saying s they scream, very unpleasant

Overall its good. But sometime it sounds like oliver wants to cry.. would have given 5 star if you guys can give the jarvis(iron man AI) as well. Cheers

I bought the UK voice. Not recommend. The built in Google voices are much better. Voice download is buggy, had to try many times before managed to download and at the end was disappointed with the quality.

I purchased the UK female voice & the app constantly crashes. Worked on my old HTC one but not my new Samsung Galaxy S6. Support never replied. Uninstalled

Been over a year since any of their apps have been updated, their Web page is out of date also. Google needs to do something about these developers. STAY AWAY!!!

Says it works with PDF to Speech. I have the pro version and it does not work with it. I changed the speech engine to svox classic tts and get nothing. I'm running Android 4.3

I loved this until I got the note 3. Sadly, it crashes after about 3 seconds. So if you have a Samsung note 3, just forget about this app. I hope the update sms make compatible. I will update my review as soon as it works!

Downloaded Sprint update 6.0.1. SVOX will not any longer work. Message about language not supported. Must pay for voices and no update since 2012. What's up?Galaxy Note4

Ivona is free for now. Ivona has much higher quality voices. The United States voices are a joke. In fact a couple of them are joke voices. Useless. They really need to get their business model correct and that out very very high-quality voices. The people working on them right now settle for robot sounding voices. You can tell they are/were young putting out things like dark Lord and Ghost. They should've spent that time putting out higher-quality voices for different as real sounding people.

Can't download Svox French/English paid voices anymore. Some error. Svox simply doesn't reply and I have got mailer-daemond reply...that it doesn't response for too long time..

When I first purchased this app, it worked extremely well, and I was pleased with it. However, the developers do not seem to have kept up with the evolution of Android. I have not been able to select SVOX as my TTS engine since Ice Cream Sandwich, nor with Jelly Bean, and now not with KitKat. The last apparent update according to their information here was September, 2012. The tech world moves fast, and it would be nice if the creators of this app showed a willingness to keep up. I'm giving it three stars because it DID work once upon a time, but no longer. UPDATE 2015: I would like to have reported that this problem was finally solved, but alas, I cannot. Here we are at Android 5.1.1, and I am still stuck with the stock Google TTS voice, and no matter how many times I select SVOX as my TTS engine, it will not change over. I have yet to hear any feedback from SVOX on this issue. I would so much rather be listening to their gorgeous synthesized voices... I miss Victoria.

I downloaded this & purchased the Victoria UK voice several years ago and it worked great back then. Upgraded to Samsung Galaxy S5 (Android 4.4.4) & reinstalled my apps, including this one. Unfortunately, data download on WiFi for the voice repeatedly failed, and when it did actually complete, the app just kept force-closing. Given the date of the last update, it seems the devs have no interest in keeping up with Android. :-( So, no choice but to uninstall, even though I paid money for it....

You cannot listen to just a small snippet of a voice and know what it really sounds like. You need long passages of unoptimised text, like an eBook. When you do that with these voices, they all sound like they are underwater. Sometimes they pronounce punctuation, which is insane. When I come to a hyphen, I pause, I don't say aloud "hyphen". All the voices also have modulation issues. My favourite TTS engine is Ivona, and once L compatibility is added, I will be back listening to my old friend Amy.

Which means no good in the new os such as KitKat and lollipop. I'm using English Victoria, and her voice sounds machine synthesized half of time. Now the Google text to speech has the English speaking voice too, it's generic, I'll have to admit, but it's much more advance than this app.

No longer works in Android 6+, it shows "checking app licence" and gives the error "the voice data failed to install, please make sure there's an active internet connection." This seems to be an ongoing problem, judging by the complaints on their facebook, and is being ignored by the developer.

no longer supported on Android 6 (Nexus 6p?) text to speech doesn't seem to use the svox languages. claims they are not supported. and the last app update was 2012. so... careful how you spend your money.

I love this app. I have found one issue though... When i reset or turn off and on my phone svox does not work unless i open the voice tts and make it speak. I dont mind... Lets face it is not like i reset every day

It isn't using my svox voice but the default voice and instead ever since the newer versions of maps was released. Please fix that. I'm rooted if that helps so maybe you can throw in a fix that overrides defaults easier for rooted people.

svox for android seems to have been abandoned/orphaned by it's new owner, Nuance. it's not on Nuance's website, no new blog entries in 2 years, support is not responding to a bug i asked for help with. don't waste money on this. (1 star only because it seems abandoned. will happily change if wrong.)

but I believe something changed in the Android OS that prevents you from using these voices in Google Maps. It's a shame because it's not the developer's fault, but nevertheless, I can't use it for what I intended.

This used to work great on my galaxy s3 but once i upgraded to the lg v20 the voice that i PAID for keeps saying failed to install. is there a problem with the software, does it not work on android 7 yet, is the company that makes these even still around?

Used it years ago and was miles better than Google, but is useless now. Won't activate the free trial. If set to the default voice, says English is not supported. Unusable. No response from Dev. Definitely don't pay for anything!

I was satisfied with the voices for a little bit of time, but after using these voices, I realized that the quality of these voices don't sound a good as they do on Google Translate. For example, I bought the Dutch voice, Jan, because his voice got replaced on Google Translate and I missed that voice, so I was disappointed that his voice didn't sound as good on the SVOX app.

I hate it when it read " " ... ( ) ! ; something like this in to a full word such as blanket...why can't it just ignore's very should add option to ignore them

Used to work great before I updated to Marshmallow and now it is useless. I will change the review if they update it to work with Marshmallow but for now the money I spent is wasted since it is unusable with the new version of Android. Buyer beware if you are planning too upgrade to or are already on Marshmallow.

Well generally when I download an application and only two of the options actually downloaded work I tend to run away. of all the voices I want to hear two of them actually downloaded and work both of which I certainly wouldn't want on my phone.

This doesn't work with Android version 4.4.2(kitkat) you will find no mention of this on their documentation. You will find complaints about this fact all over the net. No technical service either.

Just upgraded to N5 with KitKat and this no longer works. Please fix. It hasn't been upgraded in over a year, so I don't know if this is still being supported.

I guess it's no good for Lollipop and newer. States in the language selection that US ENGLISH is not supported. Uninstalling it from my awesome ZTE ZMAX PRO from MetroPCS.

Sounds smooth but has annoying pronunciation problems with A- roads in Copilot navigation that the android TTS engine says clearly. Never noticed the prob on my old HTC Desire but HTC M7 has trouble.

[TO GARY 12th Nov: The app description refers to TRIAL, & more than once!] I've tried most of them (Google, Samsung, Ivona etc) & this is the best. Yes, you also need to buy an SVOX voice to work with it (this is only the "engine") But so what? You get what you pay for. I don't work for free, & I wouldn't expect the developers to, either. If those of you who are complaining that "this is not free" actually want "free", then just use your phone's in-built voice (not great) or try the Ivona app, which is good, but not as good as this (& Ivona WON'T stay free when it comes out of "beta" testing stage). My phone & network contract aren't cheap, so this app is just a small price to pay for a big improvement! I use it with several apps, epecially CoPilot sat-nav, & this SVOX Engine coupled with SVOX English Victoria makes it much more intelligible & functional. As with all TTS apps, installation has to be done correctly, so just make sure you follow the clear instructions provided here in the apps' description page, & you'll find it easy. Perhaps one day Google's/ the phone's own TTS will be as good as SVOX & I can uninstall, but we're still a long way from that point at the moment!

It seems SVOX does not work on Android 4.3+ and it isn't being updated anymore. Nuance has no interest in developing SVOX any further beyond automotive applications. DO NOT PAY FOR SVOX VOICES.

Don't waste your time it works with galaxy 2 but it will not work with 4 do not download svox... Waste of time it will not work for new phone

This used to be my goto tts...but now there are SO MANY others that have kept up with the times. ( utter!! Would be my top pick...)

Was good choice of voices, used to fixed the robotic voice from standard default, not quite as realistic as ivona voice, but pretty good. Not working anymore, please fix, uninstalling due to the developer abandoning this once great app.

This app worked for awhile, but now the voice pack I PAID for crashes constantly. I'm not just talking about when you're using it, either. Imagine you're reading your email or downloading app updates or playing solitaire. And all of a sudden there's a pop-up on your screen: has stopped. GREAT! And after you hit OK, it reminds you 15 seconds later. And again, 10 seconds later. And again, 12 seconds later. That's actually happening. Of course, it crashes every time I launch GPS, the reason I PAID for it in the first place. And I get those wonderful crash reminders while I'm trying to DRIVE through an unfamiliar city. Even submitted a crash report to this wonderful company that, like its app, is unresponsive. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, UNINSTALLING.

Abandoned by its developers, this used to be the very best engine for natural, custom text-to-speech. Now, users need to constantly fight with the app to get it to work, and the developers won't respond to any inquiries. Very disappointing.

Will not integrate will google maps or mapquest at all. When using either there is no voice at all. Not working on either Samsung Note 2 or Droid Razr. Had to uninstall to get voice back. Paid for a voice package for that wont work.

When you first open this app it prompts you to download a package. It is supposed to open after the file has finished downloading (if it does then everything is fine), but if the app crashes after the download follow these steps. Note that even though it crashed, that it did indeed install correctly it just needs a little help. Go to "Language & Keyboard-->Text-To-Speech Output" and enable the SVOX Classic TTS Engine. Then you can go back and open the voice.

Used to be my go to app but since lollipop rolled out, it's useless.

Used to work very well, but hasn't worked at all on current devices for a long time. Continuing to sell this is borderline fraudulent.

I paid good money for the voices of this thing and it's been abandoned right after!! Not even the courtesy of an explanation! Please point me to it if I missed it. Else, Google needs to have a way to report these hit and run developers!!

Apparently they're no longer supporting this. Got a new phone and tried to load the voice I was using on my older phone but it kept failing. Emailed their support and my email was returned with an unavailable error message. And I can't get any help from the website they set up. Really annoying because I haven't been able to find a voice I like as much in other apps.

Crashes on galaxy s4. A common problem it seems. I wonder if I'll get a refund.

Says "unable to connect". Will not complete install and my emails to the support address are being returned. I can't use the app.

I wish i could force my phone to always use Victoria. She's the best. Sometimes android and Google revert to other, less human sounding voices, but I don't think that's svox fault.

I am unable to install any voices. Please assist

I just got a new Galaxy S7 and I cannot adjust the speed of the voice in settings, when I listen to the books in Google Play Books it just way too slow, please help

Do not Waste your time because this application is pretty awful to put it mildly. The developer NEVER Responds to ANY Emails . the Developer of this application is beyond PATHETIC and LAZY!! 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

SVOX Australian female voice file would not install after numerous attempts while questions, complaints, and requests for repair, fixes, or refunds to SVOX remain unanswered. This purchase was based on the one successful US female voice file that did work on Samsung Galaxy S4.

Thought the voice samples were nice and all but I judge companies hire they threat their customers. A company that that makes a third rate app communicates with their customers has a better chance if getting passed the stars than this company. I'm not going to waist my time "trying" anything. Due to their mistreatment of others.

I bought the SVOX app then try to purchase voices and the voices won't download! Hope they aren't charging me for each time I click accept. Fix this and help me!

This used to be the great app, I was using it for some time. However times are changing. 1st nail to coffin was probably acquisition of company by Nuance and stop of support. 2nd nail is, that google voices are as good for free, if not better, so no reason to buy t

Used to be great, but now crashes constantly and causes my S3 with 4.3 Jellybean to freeze periodically. It's been a while since an update. Is this now unsupported software? Uninstalling for now.

Absolutely hands down the best on the app store have never had a single problem using svox on any of our android devices gladly recommend this too anyone looking for an alternative to the stock droid voice iv found the Dutch British and American voices to be spot on keep up the excellent work from a very happy customer

It's located right in the middle of the uncanny valley. Does not sound like a machine enough to be a machine, but does not sound natural enough to be a person. Ivona text to speech is so much better.

After paying for Michael versionn of TTS.It refuses to download on my Technodroidpad.5.1 even with good network.error message of failure, could not obtain license.pls could you refund?

Initial app starts out great but on purchase of Dark Lord I got a pop up loop Internet connection issue which is not the issue. Same thing with Grace but I immediately hit REFUND, then uninstalled all developers apps. Try if you must but don't be surprised, the developer's gone AWOL.

Using jelly bean nexus 7, "go to tots settings" button fails to open settings, so cannot complete setup after making voice purchase. Contact buttons use old email address or link to page without contact interface. Text box prefixes garbage speech when played "less than sign volume level equals one hundred...". No response or acknowledgement of support requests!

I used to love the grace voice in English, so much I purchased it. Well, after I updated to kit Kat, it stopped working, I really wish it could work again.

Keeps sending me to voice manager on lg 4. Worked fine on samsung phones. Have used it for years so i know how to set it up just cant get it to work. Wont let me use purchased voice, or any voice for that matter. Note: worked b4 update

Each time I open: options/ accessibility/ TTS. It crashes. But if I understand install then use Google or Samsung TTS they are OK!!!

DOESN'T WORK ON ANDROID 6.0!!! I had it working with WakeVoice alarm app on Android 4.4. Upgraded to Marshmallow and it does what numerous others have said: it tells me it can't download the voice I purchased and to retry my internet connection.. I think the developer has left and the host for the voice packages may not be active anymore. Google should remove this and all the SVOX language packs unless there's an alternative. It's too bad. It worked great before. Now I can't get a refund or use it.

Don't waste your time and money. This app crashes every time you launch it.

Good to have decent TTS voices on Android. Good work! I especially like the pronunciation editor (tap the icon for the voice). It allows for correcting words and eliminating symbols [brackets], etc. from being spoken (leave it blank in "replace with" field).

I used to use the English UK Victoria voice as it was better than the terrible Google Pico robot voice, but now the standard Google voices are great, and work on all apps, so the only thing Svox would offer is its range of voices and custom controls. But it doesn't bloody install the voice data, so it's unusable!

This should be removed from Play Store. It is not supported nor does it work. Be sure to request your refund for any purchases within the time limit. Better yet, run away from this app.

Hasn't worked for years, abandoned by the dev. Use to be the first thing I installed on every new phone
